Description: A couple of days ago, I saw a video from Wealthy Expat, where he listed all the reasons one should move to Serbia. Most of the information in the video was false, and in this one I explain all the wrongs in his video from paying taxes in Serbia, buying property, traveling with a Serbian passport, and much more.

While crossing the border from Montenegro into Serbia, I encountered distressing treatment from Serbian customs officers. Despite being the only one at the checkpoint on a sweltering August day, they insisted I purchase transit car insurance, threatening to send me back to Montenegro if I refused. To deter me from questioning their demands, they meticulously inspected all my luggage, even disassembling my computer. The situation escalated when they nearly confiscated my valuable Maffel plunge saw due to lacking a physical receipt.
Throughout the ordeal, the chief officer displayed unprofessionalism, repeatedly expressing disdain for the EU. This candid hostility from an official figure was deeply unsettling. Consequently, I resolved never to return to Serbia and refrained from exploring the country further. While acknowledging that there are undoubtedly kind-hearted Serbians, the pervasive attitude problem among authorities left a lasting impression of negativity.

By the way, it all started because they insisted on charging me full road insurance, even though, as an EU candidate country, Serbia shouldn’t require me to pay €150 just to cross the border. To top it off, the chief officer kept ranting about how much he hated the EU. I get that you feel excluded as a Serbian, not being an EU member, but this was the situation. Incidentally, it seems numerous others have encountered comparable situations at your border checkpoints.

I find smaller Serbian towns to be in general much friendlier than Belgrade, and closer to the stereotypes this guy was describing. Where I live, I already know the people I deal with and they know me, the shop clerk lives in my neighborhood, so does that lady from the court and the police officer, etc. I greet all the neighbors every day, they can invite me for a coffee or give me a ride to the town center. Even though my Serbian is still almost as bad as their English.
When in Pancevo people were reporting they'd have to make an online appointment with the officer 2 months in advance, in my town I would just walk to a police station sometime around noon, and if the guy wasn't busy elsewhere or on leave, he'd just receive me immediately and issue the papers right away, joking and commenting all the while.
Dunno about the dating scene, but everyone I meet say I should get married soon, lol (no young single women among them, unfortunately). Pretty sure I could approach someone at a kafana or whatever, but being only able to communicate on the level of: "You pretty. Gronk like pretty." makes dating and especially starting relationships a bit problematic.
Taxes are NOT low, and prices as well, except for real estate and maybe services. However, I bought a nice house with some land for 35k euros, and now in the process of renovating it (mostly on my own, so it's taking ages). Great neighborhood, wonderful neighbors, lots of green, children playing all over the place, walking distance from the town center... Could've done even better and gotten an amazing mountain view from the terrace, if not for the restrictions to buy land for foreigners.
I'm investing in Belgrade real estate, and there are good deals to be found there too, but certainly not for a foreigner who just came into the country and doesn't know anything. Mostly deals where the documents are not ideal, that definitely require a good lawyer.

She'll tell you if you suck because we like being straightforward and this value is not gendered in the least - the men too will tell you straightforwardly if you suck. But yeah, I feel like a USian who is used to everyone plastering on a fake smile and dancing around the point with a bunch of inane pleasantries would be eaten alive by a Balkan woman in under a year (especially since the dudes looking for a poor breedable Eastern wife aren't the best at social interaction to begin with)

The same is true for gasoline tax. It is easier to collect, since basically all gasoline comes out of one raffinery (maybe not one, but very few), which very often is even a state owned company. So they can track fuel trucks from the raffinery to the gas station.
All the other taxes are very difficult to collect for the state and with some the administrative effort to collect them is even higher than the revenue created.

And if you have money you can easily circumvent things that suck at Balkans it just takes some time to get used to. If you need something done from the state you can get it done super fast end effective as long you bribe someone ( which is not hard ) , there is cheap private healthcare etc. I make decent money in Serbia as a native and my experience of this country is completely different to most people living here.

They figured out they can do it so they did it. You can always tell them no and say it is a used item and for personal use.
Example, I got Hugo Boss underwear set, with boxers and socks that cost more than 100 euros. You wanna tax that also?
Last time I was in Bosnia the lady wanted me to pay a tax for a laptop computer. I said no.
"Ohhh we will have a problem"
I replied " No honey, you will have a problem and a big one".
The guy that was with me said just give her a few euros for a drink or something or lets give her a couple of cold redbulls..she warmed up to that proposal but then I said to him (while she is standing right behind me) "I am not giving this corrupt woman anything, if she wanted a drink or a few euros of mercy she could have asked for it perhaps then I would give her and not on some made up tax".
She got offended and called her boss, supervisor or whoever the fuck that moron was, so he came and again with the tax...
      So a normal reply is
"This is a personal item, for personal use and it is declared by me as such. Such items are not to be taxed. The worst you can do is write a certificate with a serial number of the device, give me one and keep one so once I leave your lovely country I can show the device leaving with me".
To this he replied ohhh you know the law.. well you could have been nicer to my collegue you know.. Well she shouldnt ask for a bribe, so my dashcam is on and I have it all on record.
After that I got about 20 apologies, ohh it is just a misunderstanding and so on..
Had similar situations on the Serbian border also but there they are more direct to me (since I am Serbian) and sometimes they would just wave me through after I show my passport but sometimes the guy would ask directly for a few euros for drinks.
When they ask directly, like.. "Its a cold and a slow night, we dont want to check your bags, you dont want to get out of the car.. how about you give a little tip and you keep driving home and we have some drinks"
I would ask how much (last time this happened) and the reply was 20 euros.
So I reply to the guy ok, you got 2 options.
1.option I give you 20 euros and curse you all the way to my home (some 400km from the border).
2.option I give you 10euros and bless you all the way home.
He smiled and said to me "Give me your blessings and a 10er."
When they ask like that, I pay but I always negotiate a bit.. Not like I care about the 10e but Its like a game.
But when they make up a tax..then they dont get shit.. And they can be polite and waste you a few hours, then I just give them a few euros.

Many expats are freelancers, as a freelancer you can apply for flat rate taxing (pausalno oporezivanje), you pay a flat rate based on the average income in the area your company is registered in (not necessarily where you live) and a few more factors. I pay about 200 USD a month in my 8th year as a freelancer, up to a +-50k USD yearly income (which is quite decent in Serbia).

Good position and easily reach to any part of Europe...

What an insightful and thorough debunking video! It's incredibly beneficial to look for local perspectives and not dismiss them as mere haters.
-The expat creator, known for his extensive background and skillful narratives, tends to wrap everything in a capitalistic mindset, selling dreams that require one to be metaphorically asleep to believe them. His track record of overinflating worth and selling narratives has been evident not just in Serbia, but also in Turkey, Dubai, and other places. His chameleon-like attitude appears to be driven by personal gain rather than genuine interest, often backed by a large corporation, which raises doubts about the actual service delivery.
-Despite this, all the best in his future endeavors, as it will be interesting to see where his opportunistic ventures lead him next, especially since he has transitioned from the US to Dubai and now to selling citizenships globally, seemingly as an extended hand of the corporate giant he represents.
-Thank you once again for shedding light on these issues and providing a more accurate portrayal. It's crucial to challenge these narratives and highlight the reality, especially when it comes to misrepresented prices and false depictions of cultural mindsets. Keep up the excellent work!

There are also also a goverment and provincial sales taxes added to all products and those are 9% and 13%. Business taxes range from 15%-38%. There are also other taxes such as the carbon tax, and capital gains taxes, among others. The birth rate in Canada is 1.43 births per woman, and women make up 57% of university students in Canada. I live in Canada and the life for the average person here is far great (insanely high cost of living, massive drug and homelessness epidemics in every city etc), that a lot of people are voluntarily leaving the country to live in the Balkans, including both Serbs and non-Serbs. Originally Hungarian with an American upbringing and been living in the UK for a while. All I can say is that westerners usually have a huge misunderstanding of what it’s like in Eastern Europe but even the Eastern European neighbouring countries are completely foreign to each other and have a very homogeneous population.
I lived in Hungary 1/3 of my life and it’s like a middle ground between the old soviet era and the EU modernisation. The greatest example I can give you is crossing the border from Hungary to Austria which feels like your stepping 20 to 30 years into the future, and then crossing in the opposite direction into Romania which was like going into the past several decades behind. I went to Romania in the mid 2000s and the whole place was under construction being flooded by all the EU money. I imagine it to be the same south of Hungary in the balkan countries several decades behind. Obviously the further west or north you travel the more they look down on you as a pesky peasant.
Meanwhile most people have no idea that compared to the drug and divvy infested UK, most of Eastern Europe is like a utopia.

Poland feels like a much better version of Hungary, Slovakia is in between, sometimes better than HU, worse than PL. Serbia especially the northern part is still quite similar to Hungary
Crossing the border from there to Romania feels like you leave the EU even when you enter it lol.

I'm Hungarian who lives in London so I know both Eastern Europe and the west. Do not move to Eastern Europe as a westerner unless you have spent years already learning, or are absolutely dedicated to learn these languages. You will not feel like you're part of the clique without speaking the languages and acquiring the cultural context, which is very multilayered. Just because you can afford going to bars and your Badoo date will enjoy your money for that night, this kind of fun will feel boring to you in a very short time.

You pay import tax in every country when you buy something from abroad. Recently I've made the mistake to buy a motorcycle helmet from Germany ,because it was cheaper, and I had to pay import tax on it £60 when I got it in UK . Same thing happens in Romania if you buy from outside the EU.

And without improvement, there is no incentive for people to stay, leading to more people leaving. We got ourselves into this, and are now paying the price...

I knew a guy that as a kid came to The Netherlands from Yugoslavia in the 90's. And he doesn't want to go back since his country (now Croatia) isn't what he left behind. Weird situation that you're not from where you live and not familiar anymore with where you're from.

If the expat guy entered Serbia with a large savings-account, he likely did have the experience, he said he had, thus far. As long as the savings account is large relative to median income, he can have the reported experience in any country in the world. The real question is what happens when/if he runs out of savings, and has to paricipate in the labor-market. But thats a video for late 2024 😮!

heh. funny thing about that border tax. in RO, we have the same bs. with purchased stuff from outside the country, valued over 150 euros... not at the border, but with the Romanian Postal Service ! they are basically robbing you blind.... & there's nothing you can do about it. You need something called an EORI number. They make you pay the same VAT tax TWICE ! once, when you made the online purchase, and a second time when it arrives at the Postal Office, IF you want to officially receive it. This usually happens when for some reason, there's no other PRIVATE courier service available to transport your package, like DHL or a flurry of other local brands.

He's not talking about being Serbian and living in Serbia. He's talking about being American and living in Serbia. I'd imagine those Western dollars would buy a pretty exalted life in Belgrad. US Federal Income Tax is 0% up to around US$100k and if you live in a tax free state like Texas or Tennessee, etc. you don't have any US tax liability while living as a foreigner abroad. So it's a good deal for American's of a certain status or lifestyle.

    • @scouty461
      @scouty461 Před měsícem +3

This isn’t quite true. Incomes (by paid salary by an employer) at or over $100k are subject to at least 24% Federal Income Tax. States that have no income tax, like Texas, make up for it in other ways by having high sales and property taxes.
The US is also one of the few countries in the world where citizens who earn salaries abroad, even when you hold permanent residency in another country and live there year-round, are subject to US Federal Income taxes. It’s meant to keep young people in high-paying industries in the US from just moving to places like Vietnam or Peru and completely out-pricing the locals and losing the talent.
HOWEVER, the United States has a relatively low capital gains tax. Meaning, if you build up a significant amount of wealth and have that wealth earn interest payments every year through investments, then you effectively pay little to nothing if you aren’t in a salaried position. That’s why American retirees move to foreigner-friendly places like Portugal or Ecuador and live like kings and it’s almost never younger people in their prime working years.

Having lived in Serbia (and Bosnia) for a some time as an "American" (born and raised in Russia), I wouldn't really say so unless you are properly rich, in which case it matters very little whether you live in the US or anywhere else. Sure, property prices are lower, but I wouldn't say that everything else that you would need for a life of comfort is magnitudes cheaper. Add all the taxes to the equation and there's barely any economic benefit. Maybe if you compare it to the extremes, like San Francisco or NY it would hold true, but otherwise, not so much.
