Balkan people be like: "Balkan is everything except [insert Balkan country here], because we are from Mitteleuropa."
Well, tbh, Slovenia is a bit of stretch. Sure, nowadays you can easily find some Balkan food, due to cultural exchange inside Yugoslavia. You can also find some of the same distrust towards government, stemming from ages of being ruled by foreigners and especially rampant during communism bc of its reliance on denunciation and oppression of any disidents.
Historically, though, it doesn't share the same context. Noricum was a separate region as far back as roman times, after the separation of the roman empire, the area fell under western half, the inhabitants are majority Catholic to this day. The land was ruled by Germans most of the time, similar to the Czech and the Slovak (maybe Polish?), culture is mostly regionally dependent and quite diverse. It was occasionally attacked and plundered by Ottomans (Turki in our language) for a certain period of time, so the invasions are part of our collective historic memory, but it never was subjected to them.
To be absolutely frank, I don't even think of most of Croatia as particularly Balkan, other than their language and maybe cuisine. They really are neither here nor there. If I had to, I'd classify as "pure Balkan" the Orthodox or Muslim Slavic countries in the area, that were under the Ottoman rule. Other than than it's a grey area.

I don't think they know any of these:)
So is that where romania's old name: "Rumania" comes from?
wow, this is actually really interesting, ty for sharing!
@ertu9165....Yes, the term rumelia means land of the Romans or Roman Lands...and a large part of Rumelia was governed by Albanians not by ottomans before the creation of modern Balkan states by European powers and Russia....One of the most famous terms used centuries ago by the Ottomans, perhaps from the Scanderbeg period, was (Arnavut inadi) why this term referred only to Albanians and not to other Balkan ethnic groups has many theories but also derives from the fact that Albanians were the only ones to have an ethnic identity in that period.....the others were simply Rum milet or just Eastern Orthodox Christian and nothing else
In early 19th century Greek, Rumeli used to mean the part of Greece north of the Isthmus of Corinth, so basically all of mainland Greece except for the Peloponnese(AKA Morea)

false. this video contains lots of misinformation. every nation in the balkans hate each other. all of them never allied to fight against ottomans. the reason they fought against ottomans was because the last 30 years of ottomans there was democracy, the sultan did not ruled the country but a political party called ittahat ve terakki, ruled the country and they were turkish nationalists. Nationalism was rising in every nation and they wanted to get independent. in order to gain independence they needed to declare war against ottomans. they fought each other and even allied ottomans in the first and second balkan wars. ottomans is not equal to Turks. most of the visors and statesman and military commandant were non- turkish, mostly balkan origin and most of the rich, bourgeois, merchants were jews and armenians and greeks. Turks were workers and soldires. we were slaves for farming and fighting. Turks were the second class citizens. Other nations were more 'Ottoman' than Turks.

Am from Greece and I know a guy that technically is a milioner

Soviets stole a lot from romanians, not just people, but also history
Inat is probably the most Balkan word I've ever know. Thank you for teaching it to me.
10:31 Just for everyone to know. That word is also very common in Turkish. Basically the same meaning: spite or stubbornness. " inat etme!" -> 'don't be stubborn'
Serbs being turkish confirmed
Love how the Bulgarian word "Inat" literally means "stubborn". There is also another saying here in Bulgaria (being called a serb saying) "I don't want my self to be well, I want my neighbor to suffer" or something of the sort. So yeah, checks out.
The Greek archbishop in the 00s known for the jokes he was throwing out of nowhere ones said " there was once a goat that could make chocolate milk, that goat made her owner wealthy
His neighbor was praying every night for his misfortune, when God finally answered back and asked him what the heck he wants
He said - I want my neighbor's goat to die "
( I know it doesn't sound that hilarious in English) it was so spot on that when someone is trying to mess up his neighbors business out of spite or jealousy we still say" ( do you wish ) for your neighbor's goat to die? "
Half of time through out this video i heard more pronunciations of "Belkan" then "Balkan".
the correct way is Balkon
Kraut made a good video about why the Balkans does not actually exist as a concept.
I would love to see you and Kraut made a video together.
0:37 The cloth over TV and remote in plastic can be seen in Asian household too
There's a saying in hungary "Megdöglött a tehenem tehát dögöljön meg a szomszédé is!" i can't translate it properly but it basically means "if something bad happens to me, it should happen to my neighbour as well"
Children without siblings weren't taken by Ottomans just like Muslim, Jewish or ugly children etc. Contrary to popular belief, Devshirme (Ottomans making high staff governors and well-paid soldiers out of farmer children) was very desired by minority parents for their children, for instance Bosnians were severely complaining to sultan about their children not being taken for Devshirme (only christian kids were taken.).

I am most curious: is there any particular reason you used Ievan Polkka's tune while explaining the nature behind "inat" other than it is an absolute banger?
Subliminal message 😎
No matter what Balkan is, we can all agree that Turkey is not in Europe
1:31 you made me lol in the middle of the night, congrats on waking up my neighbors
