Why some slow cars FEEL fast
Vložit

- Ever wonder why certain cars give you a rush while others don't, even at the same speed? Well there's tons of science and math behind why some cars feel fast and others don't. we look at the difference between Speed and Acceleration, the phenomenon of "Jerk", and how the manufacturers can even tune in a sense of speed. Everything from the suspension to the chassis, to the windows come into play. In this video we explore how much a drivers sense of speed can be affected, and just how susceptible our host Jeremiah really is to all of it as he tries to guess car speed while blindfolded.
About Bumper 2 Bumper:

"A jerk can be responsible for sensation of speed."
Well, duh. I'm controlling the gas pedal
🤣
Underrated comment
Lol, you can just control cars acceleration or velocity.
Jerk is out of your control
Mathematically: ds^3/d^3t
(Dj:da/dt
da:dv/dt
dv:ds/dt)
Jerk is the rate of change of acceleration.
Take it as the difference between acceleration of time A and time B.
Your GAS PEDAL can only control velocity and acceleration.
One thing I can add to this discussion: lane width on the highway can influence how fast you think you're going. If I drive on a newer bit of highway with wider lanes than I'm used to, I literally have to remind myself that yes, I'm still doing 100kph and yes, that still means I need plenty of braking space in case that truck right therOHMYGOD
Thing I never understood about breaking space is that no car is going to instantly stop in front of you. They still need to slow down themsleves if they break, so yoh really just need a fast enough reaction to start breaking, not to actually stop.
@@lukasg4807 well if they break first there also is a speed difference. they also might have better brakes etc
@Lukas G The short answer: information and reaction times.
The long answer: it's been tested years ago that your reaction time is about half the total braking distance.
So if the driver in front of you notices something bad in front of him/her and starts braking hard, your brain in normal relaxed driving mode is not aware of this until your eyes register the brake lights, tell your brain, your brain tells your eyes to lock on the brake lights, the eyes send the info back that yes, those are really brake lights in your direct path, your brain tells your leg to start moving off one pedal and onto the other, and then the time it takes for your body and the car's mechanics to do what's needed to get the calipers onto your brakes. That's half the distance already gone. Even with sufficient distance to the car in front of you, your car will need to work hard to keep your crash stop from becoming a crash.
(Remember that Top Gear braking distance thing they did? Yeah that was bullsh-- I mean 'comedy'.)
The next thing: when a car in front of a close string of cars on the highway brakes a bit, the car behind it tends to brake a little harder to compensate for the cars being suddenly much closer (because of the already mentioned reaction speeds). The car behind that needs to brake even harder, the one behind that even more, etc., until cars end up stopping completely in a traffic jam or pile-up. Keeping enough distance does much to soften this effect, as cars are not 'suddenly much closer' -- you don't need to compensate -- and therefore helps to avoid traffic jams & pile-ups behind you.
Finally, there are situations where the car in front of you does brake faster than its brakes could do. For example, when the driver doesn't pay attention and rams another car. Or spins out of control. In those cases, a good distance means the difference between just touching your brake pedal the moment you hit the other vehicle, or driving much slower by that point. In other words, the difference between potentially murdering people and a stoved-in front bumper.
In an ideal world, you get the information about the obstacle the same time as the car in front of you does. In an ideal world, your cars are driving on a similar surface, with similar tyres, have the same type of brakes and they are equally well maintained, and no-one ever gets cut off, falls asleep, loses grip, has broken brake lights or spins out.
We do not live in an ideal world.

The problem with the blindfold test is I doubt you're actually "sensing" what speed you're traveling-since, as you mentioned earlier in the video, you can't feel speed. I'd imagine what's happening in the blindfold experiment is that you're feeling the car accelerate and you're remembering the intensity and duration of that acceleration and matching that up mentally with your past experience with acceleration, same thing with deceleration. So the blindfold test is probably more of a mental equation than a "body sensation". Also, a car with stiffer suspension will let you feel more of the imperfections of the road at speed, which will also give you a pretty good idea of how fast you're traveling. Not because of the speed itself, but because your body knows what going over a bump in the road at 15 mph feels like vs 60 mph. So, it stands to reason that a stiffer suspension would be more accurate in the blindfold test.
You can feel speed if there's no obstruction, or hear it based on wind sound, usually greater speed equals louder wind noise
that is the point of the test.
.. it would be a big diff if they did a blind driving test stick, only seeing the tachometer and hearing the engine and so forth …. But that’s a death trap
First, feeling the car shacking is exactly how you feel the speed. The faster you go, the more unstable it feels.
Second, accuracy depends more on personal experience, because your senses are calibrated based of that. While more bumpiness can allow a better accuracy, previous experience is still th3 strongest factor.
James May stated that after driving the Veyron at top speed he nearly opened the door while coasting at 70 mph. After going over 250 mph, his perception of speed was severely altered.
If 70 mph feels slow in a normal car, imagine in a Bugatti
It’s like when you’re on a road trip and you’ve been driving the speed limit for several hours. Then after stopping for gas/restroom, once you start driving again, it feels like you’re crawling until you get back up to speed.
Yes. This is so weird. After cruising in 120km/h for half an hour, 70/80 km/h feels like 30😂😂
I constantly do 180 km/h on the highway for 1-2 hours, and when i go back to the speed limit of 130 because the waze tells me a cop is nearby i feel like i am going 50. And then dropping down to 60km/h to take and exist feels like 20 km/h. It's insane.
i guess its like practicing with a heavier bat or with 2 bats so that going back to the normal one feels lighter and easier but just done unintentionally and bad

Good to know about context altering our perception of speed. It reminded me of how, years ago, in World of Warcraft, I found flying mounts way more fun when flying low. Now it makes sense that when flying higher up at the same speed, it felt really slow because I had all the context of where I was coming from and going to. Flying close to the ground at the same speed felt way faster. Cool how it rings true even in a case like that.

So if everyone drives a sports car we’re more likely to collectively drive slower? Interesting
Kinda depends, actually. If everyone drove sports cars, more woul get more accustomed to be lower to the road and at least be better able to *handle* more speed. These crossovers tend to have so much ride height that the worst arses in town drive Nissan Muranoes, no kidding. Basically they have no clue what's going on, just 'feel slow.'
@@OllamhDrab It also ties in to their personally acceptable levels of perceived safety. Excellent. When I first got my C8, I consistently drove about 10% slower than in my 340i in the same conditions. The difference was somewhat less at highway speeds but still slower. That doesn't happen now although there is a bit of brain recalibration that occurs when I change cars. Great job!
When I'm going very fast I tend to notice that all the active thinking gets deactivated and much happens from muscle memory etc, also when close calls or sliding out (on a motorcycle) happen everything is slowed down a lot to a point where I've had way more time to react precisely than when I rewatch it on the video, its an interesting phenomenon
But I think that this happens because there is no right focus in the videos, the whole image is in focus and we are the ones who see where we want to focus, when we review our own accidents.
It's the same thing as when I record videos riding a motorcycle and sometimes I look at people's faces and in the video you can't tell that I'm looking at the person, etc.

800 billion dollar speed machine: 90 miles=sneaking speed
any car from the 90s priced at 200 dollars gone through 6 different owners and mechanics fear it: 20 miles feels like you just passed an sr71
This is interesting coming from the view of my fairly basic sim racing setup (I have a vr headset, pedals and a wheel with force feedback, no motion chair etc)
If I'm going at like 80mph, physically it feels pretty calm like I'm chilling along at 30mph or so. If I send it at 200mph, the difference is certainly noticeable but far from the forces you'd feel in a real car. Being lower to the ground also amplifies this, much like when you are high up in an airliner it doesn't feel like you're going nearly as fast as you are in reality.
The wheel tries to mimic some of that force and it does work to an extent with force feedback. With a "harsher" feeling car you feel the speed way more than a very smooth ride at the same speed.
As you accelerate and the vibrations and feedback ramp up it does feel more like you're pushing forward a lot more even if it's actually the same as a smoother ride. Same goes for a louder engine/exhaust, the roar as you hit the gas adds to the feeling of giving a big push.
Of course in my situation you have zero G-force involved and that is a huge factor when compared to fancier rigs or real cars. However, this does help narrow down what other factors come into play in terms of the sense of speed. I find the lower you are to the ground and the more feedback you get, weather physical, visual or auditorily all adds to it in its own right. When you get into the realms of motion seats and wind simulation, this adds a LOT too and gets extremely close to reality, but far from my budget haha.
Also interesting side note, racing in the rain adds to the sense of speed a lot for me too - hitting a long straight and seeing the rain glancing of the windshield faster as you go seems to add to the feeling also.
I’m so glad this video was made because it gave me a topic to use for one of my English essays
Just one criticism of your testing (for future reference). By giving direct feedback, saying what the actual speed was, after each guess you guys were adding a correction factor to the test. i.e. when a subject knows their error the subject can adjust to account for their perceived error and adjust their guesses to factor it (e.g. "Hmm, I think we're doing 50 but I was off by 10 last time so i'll guess 60"). This also means there was likely an element of practice too meaning which ever car was tested first will inevitably have a larger error that the second vehicle.
If doing a blind test like that, don't give feedback, just look at the data afterwards.

Joey def deserves a new show, he seems like a cool dude. There were just too many problems with the VS series for it to be good.
@Xendex Motorsports the VS series could definitely make a comeback, however the point system he used needs a serious overhaul because it made no sense and the videos could be cut almost in half while still being entertaining and make the point come across. It didn't make it any better that they started with controversial subjects before the series was completely figured out.

Great video.
Perhaps you can put to rest one of the greatest misunderstandings in the automotive enthusiast world, that being that a car that accelerates quickly does NOT push you back into the seat, even in the slightest. Instead you are only accelerated in the forward direction and never move rearward at all.
Fun fact: When you notice pedestrian very front of your car, any car will feel fast.

My thoughts exactly. People are being too mean to Joey. Seems like a cool guy just like everyone who works at Donut.
Let's keep it a buck. The only reason his show was cancelled was because he felt Bugatti was a better company than Koenigsegg after that everything he did was heavily criticised for little to no reason. Honestly I like Bugatti more but for different reasons than he specified but I give him mad respect for being able to say there was a winner rather than just leaving it as a tie then saying u decide on the comment section however I feel no matter what so long as he said Bugatti was better there'd be a huge dislike ratio on the vid

@@devinwalton408 which variant ? plus that car was fast when it first came out. the fact that it still drives today is already impressive
I had 2 VWs and in those, I knew pretty much exactly how fast I was going without looking into the dashboard. Then I bought a Citroen and even after 3 years, I have no idea how fast I'm going... The first time I took it while going to work, I caught myself going nearly 90km/h where the limit is 50km/h. I thought I was going 50... Luckily, there were no cops around...
A couple of days ago, I took my GF's Ford Ka to car wash and - I knew exactly how fast I was going after a matter of minutes, without looking at dashboard! Later I came back into my Citroen, and once again - no clue about the speed...
To make matters stranger, my uncle is a pro driver and he got only 2 speeding tickets in his life; both in Citroen...
This video made it 0 clearer to me why this happens, but it simply is - in some cars, you feel speed differently...
Here in Brazil there are buses with air suspensions and spring suspensions. With air suspensions you don't feel you are going fast because with the air suspension you can't feel the road bumps. With spring suspension you can feel all the bumps and the whole bus starts shaking at high speeds.
I never knew Jeremiah was into sneakers I peep those 11s 👀
Space jammin on B2B field testing days - Jerry
So if the cops ask why I installed that 110db exhaust I’ll tell them it’s bc I want to speed less?
This explains why my classic Austin mini is the funnest driving car I’ve ever owned. Top speed 65, 40hp, and it’s Prozac on wheels..
A big factor is also wind. I feel speed differently depending on the aerodynamics of the car. One time in an old non aerodynamic car, I drove faster than I wanted in a tunnel because there were no air movements (I was shocked when I say my speed on the dashboard). Lighter cars (the smaller ones) feel faster than regular cars. That's probably a combination of the air and the effects of the road.
On interesting thing that I noticed is that also how I sit in the car and how far back my seat is also makes a difference.
Poor joey is so ashamed of his show that honestly wasn’t even that bad.
I wonder what happens to all the host with cancelled shows at Donut (science garage, VS, etc.)
It was getting better as they dropped the arbitrary number score. I was sad to see it go personally, but I'm happy he's still at Donut!

Wisdom entering my brain with the help of turbo boost !
I had a Volvo S60 1.6 Deisel, had about 112hp but when doing 80 on British roads it felt UNREAL how fast it was.
Now I do 80 in my 2022 Stelvio QV and it feels about 55mph
So that's the reason all of the people in pickups drive like idiots on the highway, they FEEL like they are going 60 when they're actually going 75. Isn't that right.
I get passed by lifted jeeps doing 90mph all the time. Like death wish much?
I am a victim of this the trucks with big a** tires mess with the speedometer mine is 10 mph off so from doing 70 actually doing 80 really confusing 😅
@@flexnlexus129 Put the right tires on that the vehicle is rated for and speedometer is calibrated for.
@@xm210c
That’s kinda a dumb answer considering they probably chose the larger tires. A better answer would be to explain the only reason that should be is the wrong size tires and to just keep the difference in mind. They also can be adjusted or replaced with other speed sensors depending on the vehicle.
People who want big tires want big tires. I think it’s dumb on a daily after a certain point. To be 10mph off, they’re probably pretty big.
Well 90 is 70 in Texas
So thats why the high crossover drivers speed like maniacs.

Love the sense of humor great stuff I’m subbing for sure
I think that the phenomena due to the lower riding height is due to the fact that you're closer to the ground so the 'movement' of the floor relative to you seems greater. Compare that to riding in a plane, you're super far from the area you're traveling across but you're traveling at high speeds. I think that concept applies to higher vehicles vs lower vehicles
The answer is simple.
People having a fisheye lens/optics. It is distorted like a barrel roll effect.
And you have a motion blur effect due to low data updates. It helps in speed detection.
Since you have to watch in straight line while driving, you will have issues with blur due optics.
While object is far from you AND you reaching it for long period - it will feels like driving slow
If object is closer to a viewer, and changes fast - it will feels like a fast moving pace.
Also, we have a phenomena of "constant speed", it is a brain "energy saving" issue.
In a very short terms, brain don't want to process info every single second.
The moment when everything around you stills the same - brain skips, no needs in updates.
But, our brain is trained to detect changes in environment, and very fast processing it. Like:
Drive 5-7mph, and then instantly go 20-30mph - brain will instantly say "wow, danger, stop!"
But the same thing - for a high speeds.
Drive 100mph for a 1 minute, it will be "stop!". Drive 5-10mins - it will be like 40mph.
But the moment you will reduce speed from 100 to 40 - instantly feels like 5mph...
But that's only while looking straight forward. Look to sides, and bang, you will know actual speed.
Also try the same with looking straight down on a road from a passenger seat.
I did this in a shooter game, had the same movement speed for my character but I modified the height, from 6ft2 to 7ft2 the diff was insane in terms of speed
Yup. This is why the Civic EF hatch is so popular; when you can see the ground 3 feet in front of your bumper, everything feels fast.
Yeah like I was going 130mph on a train a few weeks ago and it felt like not faster than 60
