  • Super Smash Bros has always been an important series to my channel, and I've been pretty critical of the direction it's taken in the past. Here though we have a new game, did it finally improve and find a perfect middle ground with its audiences or did it falter as smash 4 did before?

Monroe was a fan of brawl and even has positive videos on it. He only didn't like smash 4...so i don't really think that's an applicable accusation here.
However he mentions how now a lot of people seem to agree with his orignal opinion of 4 so maybe you have a point overall.

    • @Shyguymask
      @Shyguymask Před 5 lety +7

@@starstrati9650 You know, I'm confused why he would like Brawl but hate Smash 4 at the same time based on the reasons he's given. He complains about Smash 4 being unbalanced when Brawl had by far the worse balance in the series. He complains about Smash 4 having poor single player, and while he's right he proceed to trash on Subspace emissary when that's 60% of Brawl's single player content. He complains about Smash 4 having bad mechanics and generally being bad competitively when Brawl is objectively the laughingstock of competitive gaming. he says Smash 4 has no "identity" when Ultimate's gameplay can basically be described as "Smash 4 but with less landing lag and Melee airdodge" at the moment. Smash 4 by itself is unique from Melee and Brawl, not to mention Smash 4 will be remembered for "0.9", OP airdodges, Rage, Bayonetta, Cloud in doubles, its online being better than Smash Ultimate, being the last Smash game with trophies, Custom moves and more, so it *definitely* does have an identity even if not entirely positive. It seems biased to go all out on "Smash 4 was bad right guys" when nearly all of the criticism he has against Smash 4 can also be applied to Brawl, hell Brawl being even worse in some aspects.
I overall like Brawl more than Smash 4, by the way.

@@Shyguymask You most likely don't understand because you haven't watched my video on smash 4, however i do mention in this video that I've liked all other smash games so even then that's not an excuse and your orignal comment doesn't really suit this video/my channel.
It comes down to what i said at the beginning. Sm4sh had no identity, it felt like a slight improvement over brawl in gameplay while the modes, stages etc felt downgraded.
Brawl is not an amazing game either but it had its identity, subspace was really special, i have my problems with it but brawl still had good single player content and overall the game felt different from its predecessors. For what it was trying to be, a more casual game it succeeded.
4 fails because it feels so bland, i think most of the stages are bad, the modes all had gotten worse, and in general I'd even say the gameplay was less fun in some areas due to stuff like rage and magnet hands. It had more characters and online that worked. Thats about it.
Also i never said balance was why i disliked 4 i just mentioned it to state how ultimate had more care and effort put into it. So bringing that up is irrelevant, and your misrepresenting a lot of my points even in this video.

    • @Shyguymask
      @Shyguymask Před 5 lety +3

@@DimitriMonroe You mean a *sizable* improvements when it comes to 1v1s and competitive, right? Removal of gliding, removal of chain-grabbing, removal of infinite grab combos, removal of tripping, better balance (especially pre-bayo), giving infinite jabs a finisher and so on.
What you're saying about stages is a subjective opinion passed off as fact. Brawl also had its sizable share of shit stages including Rumble Falls, Mario Bros, Arguably New pork city and Hanenbow. Many stages introduced in Smash 4 were bland but very few of them are actually *painful* to play on like the Brawl stages I've mentioned. Omega stages were also a fantastic feature.
You say Brawl is "different from its predecessor" as your argument, even though Smash Ultimate again is basically Smash 4 with less landing lag and melee airdodge & the exact same announcer?
Adventure Mode aside, I don't see how Smash 4's modes were downgraded. Smash 4's classic mode was kind of a bit better than Brawl, at least it tried something new and had an all new boss fight replacing Master Hand on higher difficulties. All-star mode is at its best yet. Stage Builder was improved. I could go on, if anything the modes that returned from Brawl were improved overall.
Infinite Chain grabbing and tripping are 10x worse than rage and magnet hands really.
When talking about identity in Smash games, 64 is remembered because it was the first Smash game. Melee is remembered because of its competitive scene. Brawl is remembered because of its adventure mode, tripping and Meta Knight. 4 is remembered because of custom moves, footstool combos and Bayonetta.
You say that people are calling you a Melee fanboy over your video focusing on Smash 4, I'm not going to call you one but the way you're essentially saying that Smash Bros as a franchise stopped being good for over 15 years make it understandable why people would take offense to that.

    • @DimitriMonroe
      @DimitriMonroe  Před 5 lety +11

@@Shyguymask No it isn't sizable because it came with its own downgrades. I mentioned some such as magnet hands, rage etc. There were improvements and downgrades even in gameplay. I do not think from my perspective its that much more fun to play.
Also you're entire argument is poor when you say "its just subjective" of course opinions are subjective the point is to back them up. Again your asking me to explain points i went over on one or two videos in some cases which just shows very poor comprehension, fanboyism or plain denial.
Brawl did have bad stages but it had a lot of good ones. 4 had hardly anything, and like the 5 decent ones came from past games.
4 has smash tour in a replacement for adventure mode, target smaah was angry birds, classic mode was piss poor it was just 8p smash battles mostly. Etc. Its just worse. I even focused on this point in the video. Its starting to sound like you didn't even watch it.
Or maybe you dont even play smash because footstools were in brawl, combos are a melee thing. Smash 4 hardly had any and yes it had custom moves that no one used but these are not what that game was known for lmao and listing negatives like broken bayonetta just proves my point that it isn't that good.
Ultimate feels unique because its playstyle, new modes it trys etc. It also focuses on bringing us everything from the past. That's one of its main points. 4 felt bland and uninteresting. I truly feel ultimate succeeds in balancing the gap its audiances.
I even said last comment brawl is a good game, so implying i think the games haven't been good since melee is you blatantly misrepresenting my argument or just you unable to comprehend basic English. All the games have issues, but 4 is the only game I consider painfully mediocre

Hopefully I can convince some friends who had fallen off the series to try it out again. I'm glad you came around on spirits mode, I know opinion on it have been divisive but I've had a lot of fun just turning the game on and playing a couple challenging matches when I have a few extra minutes. The adventure mode could definitely have used more cutscenes to propel the player through it, continuing for too long can just feel like a slog when there's nothing to break the fights up.

Dig a lot of the criticisms, except the brief mention that Miis shouldn't be in the game and total disregard for how much they've improved this feature.
Without the need to design unique movesets, animations, and balancing, Mii outfits can be cranked out at a way higher speed. This gives (or gave) us some pretty nice """"playable characters"""" like Skull Kid, Geno, Isaac, Ashley and Vince, characters that would never make it into the game otherwise.
The movesets might not always match up all that well (watching Woolly Yoshi supplex a dude is an _experience_ boy howdy), but there's enough variation to sort of match well enough.
While sure, a lot of the Mii wardrobe choices are extremely questionable (looking at you, K. Rool, Knuckles and generally awful hat decisions like Spiny Shells), they're more versatile than ever.
Due to the Switch's new Mii Maker additions, Miis of popular characters like Kumatora or even Millhouse are easier to recreate, and you can jump right into Mii Maker without having to shut down the game. The voice options are quite decent too.
Maybe I just really like customization in games. It bothers me that the video didn't mention Stage Creator being removed, as Smash 4's was quite nice.

Some characters could use some small buffs, but nobody feels broken are requires a nerf; it feels like it has a good balance right now and you can outplay others with any character you choose. So far in the regard it's great, I just hope future patches don't screw this up completely. Also, Banjo and Kazooie for Smash; it's the only respectable answer!

Smash 4 Wii U is by far, the worst Smash game I've played, don't call me a Melee elitist, because I've never played Melee, but let me tell you Brawl was so much better, let me list why:
Gameplay-Sm4sh's gameplay was so boring, no hit felt satisfying, the rage mechanic was also a terrible idea, and fact the best way to beat Sm4sh is to spam Smash attacks, yep. Brawl on the other hand, every attack felt satisfying, the gameplay, while it isn't the fastest thing, it had a lot of weight to it, and the tripping mechanic isn't as bad as people say it is, it's so rare, and when it happens, it barely effects anything, I barely even notice I tripped, people just overblown this mechanic, it's not really the smartest mechanic, but it's not that intrusive.
Single Player Mode-Smash Tour, enough said for Sm4sh. Brawl on the other hand, Subspace Emissary was fun, not just the cutscenes, but the gameplay, it felt like an awesome platforming beat em up, I've enjoyed it from start to finish, the only level I genuinely hated was The Great Maze, nope, that level can burn, the only good part about that level was the finale boss Taboo.
Classic-Sm4sh, boring, Brawl, fun, enough said.
Break the Targets-Sm4sh, excuse me, what is this Angry Birds rip off? Brawl, you did fine, it's not amazing, but it's still fun.
All these things Smash Brawl does better than Smash 4, Brawl's not a perfect game, but it's a good game, you may disagree with some of my points, but whatever. As for Smash 64 and Ultimate, I've played a little bit, but not entirely, I would love Smash 64, Melee, and Ultimate.

Glad to see someone else criticizing the new all-star mode. I was so disappointed when I played it for the first time.
That aside, I honestly don't get why so many people seem to hate SSE. Great cutscenes, varied enemy/level design (puzzles, multiple pathways, the occasional autoscrolling section, etc.), multiple difficulties for those who want a challenge, etc. There is very little with it that I take issue with. I think the sticker customization system is maybe a tad shallow (SSBU spirits are better), and I think that "great maze" level at the end is really tedious, but that's about it. It's a solid mode in my opinion.
World of Light, on the other hand, is a mode that I have very few positive things to say about. The spirit system is pretty fun, and the few puzzles it had were pretty good...but that's about it. The maps look cheap (feels like I'm walking around in a flat painting rather than an actual "world") and feel very awkward to travel on, the difficulty is all over the place (it's mostly very easy until you find a legend class primary spirit, then it's really hard for one fight, then it becomes incredibly easy again because you now have a broken legend spirit that will carry you through almost anything the game throws at you), and worst of all, there is almost no variety whatsoever. It's 15 hours of doing incredibly easy fights, followed by walking around on cheap-looking maps with puzzles on rare occasions.
I've seen people complain about SSE being repetitive, but that mode had full levels, tons of cutscenes, character customization with stickers, boss fights, puzzles, etc. WoL only has some of these, and the few things it does have mostly feel lesser in comparison in my opinion (aside from the spirits, which are more interesting than stickers), with the massive lack of cutscenes being the most obvious one. Admittedly, I regret not playing on hard mode to make fights possibly more interesting, but that doesn't change the extreme amounts of repetition.
If anyone would like to share their thoughts on SSE and/or WoL and maybe even change my mind, then go ahead, but that's my opinion as it stands now.

Though I'd take Subspace over World of Light any day of the week. WoL is fun for a few hours but it becomes incredibly tedious very quickly with no payoff. The platforming was generic but the novelty of cutscenes _as well_ as playing as non-platforming characters in a platformer, packed with bosses was a very nice touch for me personally. I disagree on the Adventure mode part, yeah it was fun (Dear Lord please Sakurai make Master Hand playable for a mode) but the game is literally just Smash tour but longer, in Smash tour you go around, getting buffs, and in the new adventure mode, you go around, getting buffs (spirits). The funny part is that with all of the buffs, some don't even stay forever, like the giant spirits, with Customs they always stay there, and the other difference is that you actually get to play with friends in Smash tour, what makes the adventure mode better is the boss battles.
With Subspace in the other hand, it's actually fun, you have this free roam game, open to explore, and the game doesn't spam you with enemies you have to pass to get to the next level, they use original character, yeah using the real characters is great but once you beat them, there is still spirits using that character, in brawl you get to explore, you don't have limited places to go, plus you can go around, the new mode kinda breaks the use of speed running while in brawl tons of speed runs were made, some of the spirits that are hard as fuck to earn don't even have any traits like at all.
18:21 Basically adventure mode from Melee but with more characters, modes, and cutscenes to it.
I mean World of light is basically just a board game if i'm being honest, yeah we meet new characters but they are basically just reused, it defeats the point if a character that you finally got still gets replicated after saving the character, like if they can make the exact copies of the characters but stronger than them in every possible way and without needing the actual characters to make them, why did it start in the first place lmao, yeah it is still a story mode. I think the reason they put the characters in appearance order is because of how the dlc is added. When ever they had a DLC character they always have to place the DLC characters near the end of the list, so they don’t mess up the placements of the other characters too much. (I know the the mii fighters are still placed after DLC but that’s because they’re customisable) When they added DLC characters in smash 4, this meant that DLC characters always ended up being separated from the rest of their series, but now in ultimate the DLC being at the end makes sense because they were the latest characters to be added. (Also them being in appearance order fits with the everyone is here theme)

Overall I love this game. I think I've spent more hours then any other games in the series. But I agree with you that it's potential hasn't exactly peaked and I do have a lot of criticism and nitpicks though. Alot of these though are just things they could add if they'd like though and just improvemtns to online. I need more single player modes. Boss Rush and traditional All-Star are a must and I want them to at least bring back home run contest. Creating 70+ target stages for each character would be crazy but it's still something I think alot of people would appreciate. Spirit Board is very addicting but i'd love a traditional event mode even if they only put 50 or less events I'd still be happy. some descriptions on the spirits would be nice so i dont have to look online. I spent hours reading each description and looking at the trophies.
As for online! Create an uranked quick play mode so I dont have to risk GSP if I just want to practice/warm up against a human player or wait upwards of 15 minutes to play in an arena. It would be nice if they could seperate GSP totals between Casual and Competitive rulesets too. They should unseperate individual character gsp however. my reasoning is that splatoon doesnt switch your rank based on weapon so why characters? I think adding more rings in an arena would be great. also i 100% agree on the online tourneys. the way they are handling the smash open is a complete mess with battlefy. I also agree about a buffer toggle.
Also... I need Travis Touchdown for Smash DLC. Strikes Again was great and I'm so amped for a sequel to 2 it's not even funny.

I don't know if it has been said but you do have to consider the fact that Smash Ultimate does not have an unlimited budget. That's the real reason the cut-scenes are sparse. The lag people occur online is because of that persons Internet service or WiFi card (some of the Switch's WiFi cards are poor performance), the Net-Code isn't really a problem. Your other gripes about the online are reasonable. Game modes got cut due to lack of development time had about 2 years to build the game from the ground-up programming wise. While more options are better even if that game mode was put in instead of every character coming back it would have 5 hours of game-play tops so its not worth.

Smash 4 was lackluster but the hype for the DLC was big and I played it to 100%...but I just didnt feel the spark

The horrible online is the main reason I barely touch my Switch any more and have switched from Smash to Rivals of Aether. Still enjoyed Metroid Dread and looking forward to Pikmin 4 and Prime 4, but I refuse to pay for such a god-awful online "service" that struggles to do the bare minimum. Not to mention some of the final DLC characters (Steve and Kazuya) are just stupidly overpowered.
Credit where credit is due, the roster is for the most part pretty well balanced. There are still clear low, high and top tiers and low tiers aren't going to ever be able to consistently win major tournaments because the balance patches did little to nothing for the majority of them though. Another area where Rivals is much better than Smash.
The roster is also awesome. K. Rool had his spot coming for a long time and Simon and Ridley both had me jumping out of my seat.

As someone who does order the roster for fun, you can't do it in Ultimate. You just can't. There's too many characters and DLC will mess it up even more. The way they did it is the only real way it would work. I personally disagree with this,
All-star mode sucks and is way too much to fight them all back to back without rest, the resting areas were a good thing for it, kind of the same as Pikmin's day transition, where it feels like a fresh new start. All-star waiting rooms felt like you could have a breather and anticipate the next fight, especially with how the game told you which fighters you've beaten and which ones are next. I feel like throwing them all in one go, especially in a set order, is bad because then you HAVE to beat them in order, or you'll see the same characters until you improve. Some could argue that's a good thing, but I disagree, they should've randomised which order characters spawn. It also results in some "Choke points" where there's nothing but projectile characters which have almost-normal knockback as opposed to severely lowered.
Adventure mode sucks because there was SOME air of mystery and depth to subspace, where there was always somewhere new to explore until you... *did* it and found everything. WoL just felt like I was navigating an overworld map in skyrim but instead of moving the map and cursor to go places, I had to go there manually/by walking.
The spirits and spirit fights, while some where cool, were just lazy and inspired by "What if we make this smash character look like this and play as if they were in their own game?" I can think of one right now, on the fly. Dragonborn, Link (red), likes to use smash attacks, lowered gravity, only certain enemies emerge from assist trophies (Rathalos) on the bridge of Eldin. It just feels kinda lazy.
I love smash but to love something is to be able to admit its flaws.

Frankly, I don't see why everyone hates the Miis so much. They are an important part of Nintendo's history, and represent one of the most influential developments in gaming as a whole. In terms of Smash as this sort of Gaming/Nintendo anthology, they deserve their spots more than a lot of characters on the roster. If you don't like how they play, you still don't have to play them, but there's no reason to be against them being in the game at all.

Your pronunciation of Melee triggers me. Beyond. Belief. Anyway, now to actual stuff.
To my knowledge, the reason Snake has no new or updated Codecs is because the VA for Colonel sadly passed before they could record anything. Cloud is the one screwed over by corperate stuff.
As for Games and more, I like it but it's lacking in Smash Staples. Though, I'm sure that Nintendo will be doing as Kirby star Allies did, and release some free content on the side to add to G&M.
WOL is both the best and worst part for me. On one hand, I like the bosses and some of the spirits. But God damn does it get tedious eventually. It's kind of a shame too. Because it could be good, but I think it's worse than Subspace. At least Subspace had character interactions and fun stuff. As is, WOL is ok, but shouldn't have been as long as it is. Though it is slightly worth it more than Subspace for surprise stuff, I think it's somewhat lacking. Objectively it's probably better than Subspace, but I think Subspace had more charm to make up for the shit it puts you through.
On the whole, Ultimate is a fine game, but it suffers in a few areas. I'd say that, on the whole it's probably still the best smash game, but it isn't replacing any of them (Besides maybe Melee. But Melee refuses to die.) because of the other stuff it lacks. Though one thing I like more about this game above all else is the attention to detail for most characters. G&W being the standout example.
