We build and install a sealed propane box. Our initial thought of ditching propane and using an alcohol stove was a HUGE mistake as it set off our carbon monoxide detector every time we used it. Living full time in our van makes building and installing items just a bit more challenging.... our 1st time building in Home Depot’s parking lot.

So smart. Love how you two work together. So many months, and still like one another!!! 😆
+Terrie Lilley Thank you😎 I honestly can't think of a better way to test a relationship. Can't say its all been smooth sailing but we're both onboard for the long haul.🚢😀😀
Y'all do such great demonstrations. I plan to convert a ProMaster next year so I enjoy your projects & advice. You are the first CZcamsrs that I have created a folder just for your videos. Thank you for sharing so much great information.
+Jacqueline Jensen wow! Thank you for such kind words! We are loving this journey and trying to give back some useful info to the viewers! Your comment validates that we are on the right track. And happy Van build planning!!!
Thanks for sharing! I built this for our promaster, appreciate the intelligent simplicity of your design and your helpful step by step!
We are happy to be helpful. We are still using this setup 3 years later and it's been working great. Hope to see you on the road. 👍
Might want to check the hose connection each time you connect it to the tank for leaks, with a little soapy water in a spray bottle. You did not mention if you have a (Propane Leak Detector). It would be a good idea, to detect any leaks within the van from the hose or the appliance itself. As suggested, it is a good practice to turn the Propane off at the tank when not in use. Good luck Tcash
Thank you to both of you.... u guys work well together....great box build thanks for sharing
If you do build a propane box leave plenty of room for propane accessories, like a splitter and regulator. Ours is pretty tight and almost didn't work when we added a heater to the mix. Glad you liked the video and thank you for watching!
Awesome propane box! I've done vanlife fulltime for ten months already, but a propane box is one of the few things I haven't fixed yet. Will be taking inspiration from this!
Thank you! Let us know if you have any questions. We are happy to be helpful. Congrats on your 10 months of Vanlife! After one year we decided we could never go back to a sticks and bricks ever again. 👍😀
Brilliant and great share! Thanks SO MUCH! Hope to get another Van and love your choice of Promaster and build! Cheers! :) All the BEST to both of you!
Thanks so much!
Great job! Your video was more thorough than other videos of tank box.
Good video, Another great tutorial. I know your not professionals, but I to love how you two work together and not argue.
+Misty Spring thank you! We are a good team! We do argue sometimes off camera though😂
You two are so cooool! I was thinking it was too tough to build a sealed box for a 20 lb propane bottle. You've convinced me......I have got a pretty good shot at this. I am going to use 1lb bottles for the short term. After coming to the conclusion that induction isn't going to work without an addition investment of at least $3k in lithium iron batteries.
Another great job! Thanks for sharing!
+Discovering LockeNest Very welcome and happy to share. Thanks again for watching😎
Great build. We are needing to do this as well, just not sure what we need yet. Thanks for sharing this!
If you do build a sealed box make sure you leave room for attachments on your tank. Like splitters, gauges, and regulators. We cut it pretty darn close and wanted to give you the heads up. Happy travels.
Another video well done, your step by step stuff is really good. I first heard of you guys on here RIGHT when you first started up, your van build / tour was pretty early days for me as I started watching and learning all this stuff. The way you did this sealed box alleviated some of my fears about gas and such, nice work.
+Barry Dutton Sells Homes Thank you very much. Nice to hear such kind words from a long-time subscriber. If you do make the propane box make sure you leave plenty of room for a splitter and regulators. Ours is pretty tight and the hose has to bend sharp. Thanks for watching and stay safe.😎
@@oneadVANtureatatime You are welcome. I like to encourage people when I can.
So many of us are watching your videos and others, knowing the build has taken place knowing it has been out in the wild for awhile now, watching you guys live your life.
I do not say much on these videos but it is great seeing your work out there....... Have a nice week I am the guy who got run over by a car, and nearly killed, I find all this stuff therapeutic for me. My life and file has been buried by the usual corrupt gov't tactics, which is to be expected as a long time truth and liberty activist who has called them out. Gov't is a complete scam and ponzi scheme like the money system.
Love that you went to Wis Point!
+Andrew James Okey That spot is amazing!!! They are doing all kinds of upgrades along the beach! Hope it stays Freee😎
Nice job! You guys are awesome. I need to make one of these. This vid will be a big help. Very smart with the pool noodle cushions!
Glad to help! Tip...make your hole in the floor bigger that we did. I think it should be at least 3/4 inch inside diameter ours is 1/2 inch.
I liked your honest about the build might have some kinks that could be worked out. Great video. Thanks!
Good video. Everytime I'm in the Superior/Duluth area I check the shipping schedule to watch the ships.
+S Hug Thank you!! We stayed up past midnight to watch one come in the other night. Very cool with all the lights on the bridge!!! When the ship 🚢 blew its whistle Carrie nearly dropped the camera. It's all on next Sunday's video, too funny.
Kudos to the Home Depot for cutting the wood down to size for you, the Home Depot here on Ford road and Murray Dr. in Dearborn Michigan don’t do a cut under 4 feet. Don’t know much about the insulation of propane, but it looks like you did a fantastic job. Thanks for sharing
+Rollin Queen’s Vanlife Thank you!! That would have set us back another day if home depot said no☹️ We are heading to your great state in a couple more days! Well the upper peninsula anyhow. We can't wait😎 Let us know if you have any must visit location 📍
@@oneadVANtureatatime Circled the state on a Harley some years back. Superior to lake Michigan stunning scenery, and i'm from Ohio, so that's saying someting. Hahaha.
I really like you guys. You seem very sincere and down-to-earth. Not trying to be fake or plastic just for views. 👍
Thank you so much for the kind words! We want 1000 more subscribers just like you! ❤️
You certainly deserve them. 🕊😘
5:13 woahhh!! That ship is absolutely insane and it's just so calmly creeping up behind you.
+Avivamae that was such a cool spot!!!
Good job on that. Roodle is an excellent supervisor. Lol.
awesome, gonna copy this and build one today. great job. thanks for the video.
Right on! Leave enough room for any future attachments to your propane tank. We cut it pretty close.
Believe it or not some gas lines has a hose within a hose in case it leaks the outer hose is a vent. I had to be certified to assemble the gas system in construction. Its a product for which i dont remember for budsin burners for high school chemistry class. That product wasnt coppper but flexible stanless steel ribbed like. It was kind of stiff like soft copper. Saw in another uk video for this use another regulator. He used copper and compression fittings and a extra gas turn off.
! ! ! GOOD TEAM WORK & “SUPERVISOR” ! ! !
Looks really good.
+Seath Wolf Thank you!!😎
Fantastic jobguys. It looks professionally done.
+Ron Gehlken Thank you!!😎
+Ron Gehlken Thank you very much😀
You two are so cooool! I was thinking it was too tough to build a sealed box for a 20 lb propane bottle. You've convinced me......I have got a pretty good shot at this. I am going to use 1lb bottles for the short term. After coming to the conclusion that induction isn't going to work without an additional investment of at least $3k for two more lithium iron batteries. I am going back to plan A (propane powered stove). I had a 5 lb refillable bottle but it was a real hassle to get it refilled and not possible to do the trade (like it is with a 20 lb bottle). I have a fear of carrying what my mind sees as a bomb....(sorry my fears keep feeding my brain with drama), I bought what is supposed to be a highly efficient propane camp stove. I am keeping my jet boil for backpacking, hiking and so on....but I am going to keep it in mind for back up and for coffee making. It is so efficient and the isobutane bottles never stink up the place with fumes.
That is fantastic! Thank you.
Thank you Robert. If you do make your own box like we did, leave a bit of extra room for tank add-on’s like regulators and splitters. Ours was pretty tight.
Any update on propane safety?
We just moved in our van and using an 11lb skinny tank. The only place we can put it is by the sliding door.
Would be great to find out how you’ve been doing with using propane and safety tips. Thanks!!!
Great video. What's the organizer you have hanging from your rear door? I'm looking for something exactly like that
Great build. Looks great!
+Robert Epley Thank you. Would have been a bit easier with your help and the use of your shop😀
Did you see the 42-degree water I was jumping into? Burrr ❄️❄️ 😎
one adVANture at a time not sure how much better we could have done in the shop. Looked great and yes I did see that jump...your crazy 😜
FYI, you actually need to turn off the propane at the tank knob. otherwise, the leak-proof is only as good as the connection and knob of your stove. Do you plan to go to the back of your van every time you start cooking, then stop cooking? In rain, snow and summer heat?
Dave I am sure crawling is one of the poses in yoga lol ....awesome job you 2 I am learning ALOT Namaste :P
So it is kinda like yoga when I crawl under the van! I like your thinking Traci 😎🧘♀️ It makes us happy to be helpful, thank you for the feedback.
Great job amazing what you can do on the road. Workshop with a view.
+Dan&Bonnie B Thank you. It was hard to get any work done with all those freighters going past😀😎🚢🚢🚢
All in all, I think it's excellent!
+MsTheUndone thank you😃
Nice job. That door, on the propane box is a perfect opportunity to place something humorous or artistic. Also a clear coat of some kind on the box would help extend it's life.
+Bruce Doxey that is an awesome idea! I'm going to be thinking and planning now on what I can do. We have finally put a couple coast of paint on it... That should help! Thanks for the great idea!
Where might I see the cook top you now use? I am contemplating which one I will go with, when I have to power.
Looks like a great DYI job. I've seen other installations of propane boxes and it looks like yours compares nicely. Yes it might fall just short of code with the vent size and rubber tubing, but it will more than do the job for a while. The tank is secure and safe.
+Doug Nichol Thank you😎 All have to do some research on the metal tubing to see if that's a dyi job or not. I hope so 😀😀
one adVANture at a time In Canada you could do it yourself but would need to get it inspected by a certified tech in or for the vehicle to pass an inspection. There might also be rules about crossing boarders too.
Doug Nichol We were wondering if there is any restriction at the border with propane...we maybe be testing that out on are way back from New England this fall.
We are building our propane box today - great job on the video.
Right on! Don't be afraid to go bigger on the vent hole through the floor and leave extra room for a splitter and regulator if needed. Ours is still holding up strong, we are not using the straps inside as it doesn't move at all.
@@oneadVANtureatatime We just made a post on our Instagram instagram.com/p/COOfkKoh37b/?igshid=1du2jz5hofnrf
Any updates on this? This was the route i was thinking about going.
You guys have fun together. Good for you.
Like the pool-noodle bumpers. Could have probably just cemented those to the inside walls.
+softdorothy Thank you! We are like minded thinkers on the cement!! We considered that.😎
I love the pool noodle! Great idea!
Carrie is a master at coming up with good money saving ideas 💡
Once again I thank you two for insight on my Promaster. Like your box and will copy. One question, why did you put it in the garage instead of under the cabinet? Thanks
+Dougal we tried to go without propane in our initial build. We started with an alcohol stove that was a disaster! So somewhere along our journey we added propane and have VERY happy. The garage was our only free space😃
Thanks for video!
You are welcome. If you do build your own box make sure you leave enough room for attachments. Like a hose splitter and regulator. Ours is pretty tight.
Whoa...great box...but I really loved your distractions...that would be amazing to see. Massive river barges.. wow..oh the box was pretty good as well. LOL
It's pretty cool having a view while working on a project. Some distractions are a good thing. 😎
Hi Dave and Kerry. Thanks for the very helpful and pleasant video. One question: How did you confirm that the door was providing enough of a seal against any propane that might be leaking? Do you think there might be a way to confirm this? Cheers.
Good question! We put some burning incense in the closed box..... WITHOUT THE PROPANE CANISTER OF COURSE. You might also be able to use a smoke bomb.
I have seen some drop-in vent pipes on the net, but Oatey makes a sink drain replacement pipe that installs rather nicely. Available at Home Depot and presumably at other home improvement stores. Needs a 1.5 inch hole. Uses a large nut to secure to floor, I used blue loc-tite. Also has gaskets and extension pipe if needed.
Brand: Oatey
Model: HDC9691
Other info: Brass Grid Drain, without overflow (also available in plastic)
oh good idea! thanks for the info...I will pin this comment.
As I continue to do research on van life I am reconsidering propane again after once swearing it off. When you look at the weight to power ratio of a 25 lb cylinder compared to equal amount of battery weight and expense you'd have to haveto power an induction stove top, its hard to argue the merits. That coupled with the money spent and the simplicity of use, I'm wondering if going full on solar power system is worth it. Thanks for this video!
+Nitram Midnite Thank you. We struggled along with that same process. Propane is just to efficient and cheap. Now looking back we would have built in a propane system if we could redo. We love our solar but it's not going to run a good space heater, water heater, or even an induction stove in our case.
Good luck on your build and thanks for commenting.😀
great job on the DIY. How's it holding up? My only concern is front-loading seems more likely to leak then top loading
Hi, Jack. The propane box is holding up perfectly! It’s been over 2 years and going strong.
Nice! That tank isn't going anywhere. 😉
Do you have a link to the latches you used?
Does this vent out of the box anywhere outside?
🧡💚💛💜 you Supervisor!!!! Hmmmm you’re making me think we could have propane after all!?!?
Propane has been very efficient and cheap. We figured most professional RV’s have it so why not. Right now we are running a wave 6 heater off our tank and maybe upgrading to an externally vented heater that taps right into our fuel tank. Thank you for watching.
If I plan on using a 1 inch pvc with 3/4" inside diameter for the vent hole is there a faucet washer that would work for that size or would I need some other gadget?? Thanks.
+Shirley Hughey there should be. If not just a piece of mesh glued or zip-tied should work as well!
What? Y’all look like professional construction workers! 👷♀️ 👷♂️ especially that supervisor on the bed!🐶😂
+Andrea Vale Yep Roodle did a fantastic job supervising!
Carrie does a great job with design and wood work. Those classes in wood shop back in high school keep paying forward. Thank you for watching and commenting!! 😀😄😄
If i install 2 x 20 LB propane tank inside a sealed box, do i still need 3/4 vent or i need to increase the vent to a 1.5 inches hole?
We are not professionals but I think we would do 2 holes at 1 inch.
Looks great! One question: Do you leave the tank valve on all the time? Thank you.
If we stay in camp for a couple of days or longer we leave it on. When we travel we shut it off for safety. Some tunnels and border crossings require it turned off and it's just plain safer if you were to get in a wreck. Hope that helps. Happy travels.
@@oneadVANtureatatime Thank you for the reply!
Good job I liked the video and the project 👍. Were you having some problems with propane smell in your van?
+Dino - Some smell issues each time we disconnect the stove plus we were constantly moving the tank around which was a pain. The main reason we built the tank was for safety. Altitude or heat can cause a tank to vent out at a high rate and even spray liquid.
So mainly playing it safe and adding convince. 😎
Safety move for self protection
Beautiful job! How come you didn't put the regulator on the tank inside the box?
We do have a regulator in there now for the wave six heater. The stovetop does not require one. It's all in there pretty tight..a couple more inches on the box would have made it a bit easier to fit everything in.
@@oneadVANtureatatime Oh good. I like to keep the regulator near the tank. I'm thinking of a box like that for my motor home. great idea.
Awesome
Right on! 3 years later it's still working great. 👍😀
I have the same van here in Melbourne, call them fiat ducato over here, your gas set up is really good have copied yours, will be checking for leaks when done, enjoy your trip.
Hi Peter! It's been doing great for over 3 years now. Although we cut it pretty close on room for extra stuff like additional regulators and such.👍
This is unrelated but can you tell me where you got the organizer on the back door?
+John tatman We ordered off Amazon. Pretty sure it's under ”over the door shoe organizers” They are pretty tall so we cut part of it off and mounted it behind our couch for extra storage. Very handy and still in good shape. I think it was around 15 dollars but can't recall exactly which one.
Hope that helps 😀
they are shoe organizers. Target carries them in the "closet" section. Probably also at walmart
Usually the tank doesn't leak. Its the jerry rigged connections that people make throughout the van.
Very true. Most people don't even use pipe sealant.Take care and happy travels.
Hey, I have seen in other blogs and stuff that copper tubing is best as well, do y'all know why this is? I am trying to do my own propane install and also think the rubber tubing would be a lot easier if I can get away with it.
We are no experts but we drive many bumpy and uneven roads. I feel better with rubber that can flex as we flex and personally don't trust a pipe doing the same. Anyhow our rubber tubing has held up well for nearly 4 years now. 😀
Looks tight and nice, now you can go do some laundry. Perfect use of that yoga mat by the way!
+Timothy J. Marsh Thank you Tim😎 Your the first comment on the yoga mat. That mat is a space waster!🧘♀️ Might try it next oil change.
GOOD JOB
thank you!
What were your dimensions? And given the small issues you had what are the dimensions you recommend?
Make sure the tank fits of course than add 6 inches for a regulator/pressure gauge. Let me know if you want exact measurements..I am just being lazy because I don't want to unpack to get to the box until this thunderstorm breaks. 😂
Do you have written down somewhere the measurements you had the wood cut too?@@oneadVANtureatatime
A mistake everyone makes with the propane locker is NOT making the vent tube flush with the bottom of the locker. They always have it raised 1/2 inch or more. If there was a leak it gives the propane that much space to pool at the bottom. In that situation it will find the weakest seal on the door bottom. Not here ;)
Thank you! I honestly think that was a fortunate accident and appreciate the input. 👍😀
Good that you are handy, In Australia this would be illegal. Gas box has to be metal, accessed from outside door and by law certified and a metal tag riveted on the exterior of the vehicle pertaining to this, I have seen some videos of vehicles with the gas cylinder inside the van under the sink and not in a box..............
I am thinking the us will probably end up with your same restrictions in the coming years. Under the sink with no sealed box and floor vent is definitely risky. Take care and thank you for watching.
next time if you use a 1 3/8" drill bit you can buy a plumbing insulator plug to seal your hole. this works for 1/2",3/4" and 1 " holes
Awesome advice! Much appreciated. 😎
My pleasure gotta give my expertise in plumbing to balance the information I have received on areas like Electric. Can’t wait to start bulking at the end
If the month
Good job help out to know
+David Sager Thank you!😀
I like that you value a safe installation, but where is your regulator? 12:15
You mentioned adding a floor vent and switching to pipes later. Helpful vid you might want to check out:
"Installing Tiny House Propane Lines" at Moose Henderson channel
He makes some great points!
Good info you might want to check out at www . lakesgas . com (title: Residential Propane Installation Guide)
We did add on a low-pressure regulator...it just barely fit in the box 😀
5:09 that is a cool sight to see! I'd love to buy a $30,000 house along the river in Toledo just so I can watch the giant ships go by from my porch

my comment: beautiful couple
Thank you! We are enjoying a great life. Thank you for your kindness.
From 2021 that's how much a sheet costs
You just wasted your time and money. That vent hole for that size box, is way too small.
