Last week, Nikon made the surprise announcement that it had acquired RED Cinema, one of the most well-known American cinema camera companies. In an instant, Nikon went from an often-ignored player in filmmaking to a top-tier competitor in the space up against the likes of Arri and Sony. What does this mean for the camera industry going forward? Well, a heck of a lot, and Chris, Jordan, and Jaron break it down as well as speculate on how they think Nikon will handle its new crown jewel over the next few years.

If a new Pen F had phase detect focus and prioritized JPEG shooting with enhanced color and film simulation adjusts it would be a great every day carry camera. The M43 system already has compact lenses like the 17mm 1.8, 20mm 1.7, 9mm 1.7

No film simulations by name, instead it has "ART" color filters. Starting at $600~, if I was on M43, I'd seriously consider one as a casual second camera.

What Red & Nikon boiles down to are that Nikon now has cinema cameras in their lineup, as Sony and Canon have with Burano, Venice, C300, C500 and more.

  • @CatPixStudio
    @CatPixStudio Před 3 měsíci +4

    Here is...
    (1) why Nikon had a real shot with their lawsuit against RED in contrary to Apple, Sony and others:
    (2) why Nikon won't licence internal compressed RAW in the near future to competitors:
    (3) why it's a good thing:
    (1) Nikon had an entirely different lawsuit approach as shown in the video below.
    czcams.com/video/__X25Fr2K_M/video.html
Nikon claimed that the application for the patent wasn't valid in the first place as RED made serious mistakes doing so. And Nikon surely have tangible evidence for it, which other competitors don't have.
    (2) BUT if Nikon had won the lawsuit instead of the joint dismissal and agreement with RED in 2023, RED would have lost their patent. Which wouldn't have been just a big loss for RED but a loss for Nikon too. Because not just Nikon would have benefitted from a "free" patent, even more so Nikon's competitors, who already have a good grasp in the video/cinema industry.
So with their joint dismissal of the lawsuit and their agreement the important patent still stays intact. And now RED and Nikon can benefit from each other without other competitors benefitting from the patent.
    (3) In a strong competition with big companies like Canon and Sony having a strong ally behind your back is a good thing for development and production resources AND in the end for the consumer.

One thing about canon’s stance on third party lenses, while I think they really need to have third party lenses, but I understand why they are trying to maximize their revenue early into the system as they release their brand new lenses that take money and r&d to develop.
Hopefully soon they will decide they’ve recouped enough money to allow third party.
One thing people don’t talk about is how Sony stops their high end cameras that actually get more than 10 compressed raw files per second from letting third party lenses from utilizing the cameras full capabilities.
The Sony a1 and a9iii both force you to use very expensive Sony lenses if you want to unlock the full capabilities of the cameras. Thats being very third party unfriendly for the high end market.
But in the same vein they cripple their cameras to max out at 10fps compressed raw for brand new cameras. They are crippling their whole system and nobody cares, but canon is blocking third party autofocus lenses and they’re pieces of shit.
They all do things that aren’t consumer friendly. We need to stop focusing on canons lenses and talk more about Sony fps crippling their cameras to a detrimental degree.
They all need to get their heads out of their asses and be more consumer friendly.

To be honest if you are able to buy a high-end Sony cameras, there's a very small chance that you wish to use third party lenses on high burst mode on it
Canon's problem is more pronounced because there are no affordable mid-range lenses to pair with their affordable entry-level bodies. Ideally you want the lenses to be "better" than the bodies, not the other way around

    but they discontinued the series.
but man, if they brought it back, put some updated sensor / tech / autofocus AI into it... and actually dust sealed the lens this time? THAT would be wild.
because they HAD the retro dials design. they had a cool looking FUN as hell to use camera. absolute classic all-rounder.

Re Babe's comments about testing: You have to shoot artistically if the gear is being evaluated for it's "fun" value (this is particularly true with cameras - do lenses have different "fun" values? I tend to think not, they're tested more on their technical merits, although they are frequently noted for annoyances in their design choices, so some are at least less annoying than others).
Chris, If you ever have time to spare in the Olympia, WA area, let me know you'll be here and I'll take you out to a range and we can do some pew pew. It's ironic mentioning buying a Sony body for more lens choices rather than sticking with Canon, because that's what I feel like I'm about to do. I love Canon, my R5 has been great, the ergonomics are solid, but RF glass is so expensive that I'd rather just live without AF and adapt vintage glass instead, or fall back on my decades-old design EF 400/5.6. I gave away the rest of my EF glass with my old 60D, and just couldn't get over the sticker shock for a first party lens at the time.

Absolutely agree with Chris. More creativity in lens tests, please. As interesting as different shapes of bokeh balls might be technically, they get pretty boring. (And what sad photographer shoots snaps of distant lightbulbs for a living anyway?) I too like to shoot ‘at any aperture I damn well please’. Does anybody else find the current obsession with f1.2/f1.4 lenses and shooting wide open just because you can, regardless of the situation, intensely irritating? As a veteran of the 35mm film days, like millions of others, I lived perfectly happily with mostly f2.8 or even f3.5/f4 lenses.
As an aside, I spent far too long snapping inanimate objects (and often near-inanimate people holding awards or shaking hands) for magazines where anything remotely ‘arty’ was definitely not required. It took me years afterwards to even want to point a camera at anything again (inanimate or mobile!) and to see things as a photographer the way I used to before. Like Chris says, there are some forms of photography that can do serious damage to your soul.

On Minolta: it was never very clear exactly what Sony acquired from buying Konica Minolta. I’ve long come to suspect the ‘heritage’ people often assume Sony inherited may only have amounted to Minolta’s two DSLRs (and possibly a third in preparation that became the A100 or maybe A700) and the Minolta A mount lens production line. It was thought a fair amount of K-M was simply junked: no-one ever mentions Sony having a ‘Konica heritage’-remember the Hexar label?-which suggests there simply wasn’t one, it just vanished.

Hello its me Martin, I love the concept of that camera, also its in my opinion, the most beautiful Sony camera, the thing is its way more expensive tho, Im talking used price because new its kind of impossible to get really. So basically I can get either the A7R III, A6700 or the XH2 for around 1300$ - 1400$, where the A7C II is around 2100$ and then we also get into the territory of the A7IV but still out of my budget. 1400$ is really the most I can spend, both systems in my opinion are great because of the third party lens support so they are really my only choice. I looked as well as the A7 III and the A7C but the lower megapixel than the A6700, not by much tho, and the fact that the A7III is basically the same price of the A7RIII I think is worth going for the "R" version. The A7C, still a beautiful camera, the full frame sensor and the fully articulated screen made it a really viable option, but really the lack of the front dial for wildlife really worries me

Haven't had much issues with lack of front dial. I do miss it, but I've kinda adjusted to it. I think the A7R3 is a no-go because the autofocus is weaker than the A7iii. Sony's AF game only started peaking from the A7iii. I had issues focusing on the 35mm GM with the A7R3 where it would front/back focus on the eyelash or eyes.
A6700 would be the cheapest option in terms of lens ecosystem for sure. The X-H2 also hits diffraction super early so you can't use the 150-600mm lens as it's f/8 on the long end which is already hitting diffraction.

As one of you mentioned (Jordan?) the AF was worse than the EM5MKII, they were using the EM5MKII processor at 20MP instead of using a more modern CPU. No PAF, starts up slow sometimes, moderate low to low light AF problems with lenses particularly Panasonic 15mm F1.7 which is a lens that matches it but even Olympus own 25mm F1.8. FAS LCD instead of TILT LCD.
I think a well done PenFII would sell, at least do a modern EP7 successor. But no, they are too stuck on wildlife/adventure/birding and I hope that niche is big enough because a lot of previous m43rds customers are looking elsewhere for their potrait/street/wedding/product/architecture/events/everything else photography.

Nikon should provide RED with cash and make them the best RED they can be, Get the most senior execs and go and talk to RED customers, for year, dont worry about fusion products and serendipity, make cinema lenses for them and dont slack on focusing performance and scene AI for the core Nikons, forcing the engineering and technology to premature confluence for would be a disaster.
OM systems and Panasonic could go back to MFT and do a fantastic update on there small street cameras.
Fuji need to take those revenues and throw them at software specifically connectivity, subject recognition and menus.

What about Konica? Chris mentioned that Sony's heritage was Minolta, but he didn't mention that Minolta took over Konica. Perhaps my most loved and funnest camera ever was the Konica FS-1 with the small 40/1.8 Hexanon. To my eyes, it was beautiful. The battery box for the motor drive gave it a bit of a grip, all revolutionary for the day. It had a fatal flaw. When the electronics failed, as it inevitably did after a few years, the camera was irreparably bricked. It was replaced by the FT-1 which just didn't cut it aesthetically. It looked more like a knockoff. Anyway, one bad product from Sony and it's dead to me, but if Sony brings out an FS-1 replica, I may change systems.

And I don't even like Nikon at all, yet I'd still choose them over Canon. Regarding Canon’s desire to be No 1 in the market for mirrorless cameras.
Obviously opening the RF mount to 3rd party manufacturers is a must, but for me the priority should be making cameras with a tilt screen option and not just with their side hinged pull out screen …It’s kind of their way or no way.

For some reason, I think one of the companies that should be worried the most about the Nikon|Red acquisition is Lumix aka Panasonic. Their only draw was cameras that offer good video features and good video lenses. Nikon now has (or is going to have) features that are gonna be euqally good, if not better plus they have a huge standing with photographers. Something that the panasonic cameras have always struggled with for some reason.
Of course, as an L-Mount user myself I hope this pushes Lumix to deliver even better cameras to stay ahead but oh well, we'll see...

I think if Nikon want to compete in Canon/Sony space, rebranding it to Nikon is the way, but Red name still have weight in Hollywood, so just rebranding it to Nikon will kill the brand in Hollywood circles. I think it depends on where Nikon wants to focus. I think they should keep the RED name as a line of cameras which is ultra high end, competes directly with ARRI etc.... and rebrand the rest to Nikon that will directly compete against Canon and Sony cinema cameras.
