    Guys, you do NOT use gaff tape for masking out viewfinders! You use Chartpak graphing tape, which lets you make super thin lines and comes in a variety of colors. This brand dates back to the pre-computer era and was used to make (duh) charts and graphs to be photographed for business-graphics slides or used in printed publications. It's still widely available and is a tidy solution. I can only imagine how much Chartpak tape I could get for the $150 Sony is charging...

    Hello Chris, Jordan and Jared ! Thanks for taking the time to respond to my speedpide question. To add some more context to my initial question : the plan is to have 2 bodies stationary and two bodies with me. The wish to add in zoom lenses won't be used only for wedding work, but also landscape work. I currently use Fujifilm's as my landscape kit, and it's a pain/expensive to have two different camera ecosystems. If I get the 20-70 for landscape work, then there it's not necessary to keep the Sigma 20mm just for weddings. For landscape, I want a telephoto lens (Tamron 70-180) and it could be very versatile with both a APSC/FF. When used during wedding ceremonies, I would shoot it from a tripod.
    Jared your thoughts on color profiles etc between the DJI and the Sony bodies is noted. I have a DJI drone (Mavic 3 mini pro) and I find that if shot in D-log the image can be graded to get close to that of Sony profile (excluding the depth-of-field). Could I expect a similar result with a DJI pocket ?
    Jordan, in essence there isn't any issues with the A7iv in my current work flow and I don't really mind the crop in slow-motion. My thoughts are more along of adding a different camera "style" to have more flexibility. A 6700 would be great for landscape and good for video capture at ceremonies. The FX30 would be excellent for video capture and ok for landscape photo work. The Osmo would give me the chance to have 3-4 gimbal like moves per film, which for me is enough. I don't see myself shooting the whole day on a gimbal.
    Chris, about half of my video gigs are shot alone, and yes it's a bit intense, but also an excellent challenge in organization. If I'm only doing photo or video I will come alone and if I'm doing both then I like to have someone with me if I'm delivering a long form film (7+ minutes). Yes, I love shooting primes and I like the constraints that they impose. You have to move around and be in the action.
    Thanks again for responding to my questions, I look forward to your next reviews and podcasts ! Cheers

    16:26 dude you didn't make a wrong purchase. I'd have went nikon myself. So many people have been saying ZVE10 when it comes to vlogging cameras and guess what? Screw everyone. Z30 for me for a secondary camera.
    Because it's weather sealed (the body is, i only need to get additional weather resistant lenses), it has a red tally light in front, and it doesn't crop the 4k30p. The benefits outweigh the negatives (like having slightly inferior AF tracking).
    Canon RFS? They have decent bodies but with barely any lenses at the moment lol.

    • @yawningmarmot
      @yawningmarmot Před 7 měsíci +1

      I've used both (well, I've used the Zfc but it's basically Z30 plus EVF and minus the grip), and I can confidently say that in terms of usability and just overall quality, Nikon is miles ahead of Sony. It's got a great quality bright and fully operational touch screen, good clear menus, a lot of picture controls (Sony doesn't allow you to adjust Noise reduction for video), and there is hardly any rolling shutter artifacts as opposed to jello on Sony. The autofocus, of course, is inferior and the preamps are noisy, but almost everything else including the kit lens is far better on Nikon.

    I'm going to post this but really I know you aren't going to see it. This is one of my favourite quotes from Herb Keppler (the driving force behind Pop Photo and its previous handles): "“The truth is that I probably have collected more sturdy tripods than anyone else within a hundred-mile radius. But unless I’m within easy walking distance of home or can stash the tripod in the car for convenient transportation, you will find me happily taking pictures with a flimsy tripod at hand.”
    (Popular Photography, February 1993 - Herb Keppler) Thought I would edit this in. Many hanging out at dpreview are older, a well known fact, and many of those grew up with Herb Keppler. I just learned by accident that Pop Photo was a thing on the net, I mean literally about two weeks ago when it appeared in a search. I think their most recent mistake was not to advertise it more. Many of those old farts (like me) at dpreview would have flocked over to support it.

    Hey guys, thank you so much for answering my question / speakpipe!! Just a note... I have only tried SOME of those cameras, but love what I have seen of them and would love to have them for their own niches. My Q2M is a great camera and the detail plus DR is just... amazing. I love it... and I love my H2, but the AF in crowds (and even in some portrait situations) is horrendous. Practice and working at it has really helped a lot, but I am at my/its limitations if I am doing run-and-gun event photography and trying to catch a quick moment (think Rennaisance Faire, etc). Heck, I couldn't get it to stick to someone's eyes over the parasel she was holding... it actually flipped out and seemed to have an AF seizure. As for overheating, it has also overheated taking stills, but that could just be our weather (it was almost 45C in the sun that day). The Sony was my conclusion, also, and the others are just... daydreams, you know. Anyways, thank you very much for your input, and keep up the great work. - Logan W

    That it's interesting listening to you guys talk and I'm really enjoying it. I don't always get to watch all of it but one point I would make is there's two choices really you try and buy one camera that does everything semi well like you can shoot sports with it and you can shoot landscapes, and you know there are some really good hybrid all around cameras, especially Fujifilm and even Nikon as well and Canon too or you go for a very niche camera fee one or two needs and then you have a different camera for your other needs. I've gone with the second option where I have three cameras that have very specific needs. That are very good at their task. I prefer this method it is the right tool for the right job and I have a GFX camera for my landscape photography because nothing beats it. The landscape Photography you can throw a Sony 60 megapixel camera I'm sorry but it does not beat even the GFX 50 cameras for landscape Photography but then I need to go and shoot portraits at a kids event or at a family event or some other community event so I use my XT5. But hang on a second I also do sports and neither of those above cameras is great for sports and this is where I have a Nikon DSLR yeah still rocking the big D8 50 because the damn thing does not miss and it's great in all weather conditions and great image quality even to this day so I think you need to make up your mind early in your photography journey. Do you want an all-round camera that can do everything quite well or do you go the other way is and this is financial to you have a specific camera for your need

  • @nevvanclarke9225
    @nevvanclarke9225 Před 5 měsíci

    Hey guys, it's really hot in Australia and I do something really peculiar and it might think this is weird but when I go to weddings because you're shooting all day and often in summer I will grab a small esky which is a small ice bucket container and basically I have ice bags in that container and when I'm not using the camera basically I will go and put it in there for a few minutes in a plastic bag. Turn the camera off and the cool conditions will not damage the camera you just make sure you don't get any water on the camera obviously the enemy of cameras is heat and given that they have so many different senses, one of the other tricks to do is turn off Bluetooth turn off any extra electronic device in the camera to conserve the battery. The more the battery heats up the more the camera heats up, so it is almost going into a mode where you turn off some of the features. Make sure you don't run an LCD as well when you are filming so that can be beneficial see if you can Bluetooth your camera to your phone that way you're not running an LCD which is actually increasing the heat of the camera everything that's electronic in Mirrorless camera add heat to the camera sensors and motherboard.

    22:23 Regarding the R5 overheating while shooting photos, do you think it could be your viewfinder setting? Like “power saving” and “smooth” mode. I feel like the “smooth” mode requires more GPU power because it turns your viewfinder’s FPS into 60fps, which may generate more heat. Just a thought, to help you troubleshoot.

    • @yawningmarmot
      @yawningmarmot Před 7 měsíci

      Isn't smooth supposed to be 120 fps? I thought 60fps was the default for most cameras. Either way, a camera as expensive as that shouldn't overheat at all unless subjected to 40C heat and such. I think we've been way too tolerant of this clear engineering flaw on our cameras that is overheating. In fact, I don't remember ever hearing of overheating as acceptable until about 2010s when Sony came out with their A6300 and everyone just accepted this design flaw just because the camera had amazing oversampled 4K (albeit with horrendous rolling shutter artifacts).

    • @blackbugmedia
      @blackbugmedia Před 7 měsíci

      @@yawningmarmot it may be 120fps. I’m not sure. Regarding the history of overheating in 4K, there’s always been people who want top technology even if it’s for 10min, and others who don’t want it at all if it’s not perfect 100% of the time.

    54:50 That's not a bad way to get both zero-banding and high dynamic range in cinema - by just using mechanical shutter. The Arri Alexa SXT Studio would definitely surpass the vast majority of modern rolling-shutter sensors and all global-shutter sensors in existence in terms of dynamic range. But from the discontinuation of the Alexa Studio lineup, its market is probably too niche even for Arri.

      I do come from a Samurai family that can trace our lineage back to the Gempei wars. We fought for the Taira clan and eventually even the Sengoku Jidai Daimyo Uesugi Kenshin. Although by that time mostly as accountants and teachers, not swordsman. Of course like almost all other families we were absorbed into the Tokugawa Shogunate eventually and then worked for the government under the Meiji dynasty. Anyways what I’m getting at is that I am no Shogun or even Daimyo. So just continue to watch our show and I’ll be happy.

      A little of this. A little of that.
      If you're shooting Anamorphic you can get the traditional aspect ratio of 2.39x1
      If you're shooting normal lenses you have more room to reframe and fix in post. Or to create multiple angles without moving the camera.
      Not sure why they aren't complaining about companies not even offering DCI.

    RE: 56:35 - Will high heat settings in cameras damage them over time?
    I've had my X-H2S since its release in mid-2022 and I soon found out that its Yellow Heat Warning would appear on warm days when I'm shooting. I work as a real-estate photographer in Western Australia and I'm shooting outside quite often, but these heat warnings pop-up too many times to be comfortable using them. This has also been happening with my GFX 50S II that I acquired mid-2023. We recently had somewhat of a heatwave that lasted a week with max temps in the mid-to-high 30°C and my cameras hitting the Red Heat Warnings a few times. I've tried to 'mitigate' the sun hitting the camera with a cold-shoe 'mini-umbrella'.
    But also recently, I've been shooting behind-the-scenes photos on an indoor film set (just someone's house) and also been photographing musical/dance theatre production shots and the heat warnings still appear. I've been told that it's the CFexpress card heating up from all the burst shooting, which I find ridiculous because the X-H2S is meant to be a flagship camera for professionals. I've been a Fujifilm user for 7 years and I'm quite concerned that I've made a bad choice in upgrading to the X-H2S.
    I think there are two issues here: 1) I don't think these cameras were tested properly in hot climates like the Australian Summer and 2) Fujifilm cameras seem to have poor heat dissipation, which might explain the tacky 'cooling fan' add-on.
    So... what's the deal with cameras and heat dissipation design? My other real-estate photog colleagues have also noted heat warnings on their mirrorless Sonys/Canons/etc, so I get the impression that this might be a wide-spread issue?

    I have a question on desktop pc requirements for using davinci resolve with some fusion work. I have an old intel i7 8700 desktop pc with a gtx 1660 super and 16gb of ddr4 ram, which should be enough to edit 4k footage as per videos and comments i found on youtube and community forums/sites. But i'm having a terrible experience on even just playing them at 4k resolution (frame skipping mostly) so i always have to change timeline resolution to 1080p while editing which plays fine after caching. Still its hard for me to preview a transition or effect and fusion playback is basically unusable. I have to change something on fusion then go back to edit tab and wait for caching to be done to play see the changes properly. I've added extra 32gb ram later (48gb total now) which didn't change anything so I assume either my cpu or gpu is the bottleneck now since all drivers are up to date as well.
    Do you think i should upgrade my gpu and test first or upgrade both the cpu and gpu which basically means a new PC since motherboard, psu and ram will need to be replaced to match. Or any other recommendations? Can apple M1 handle fusion 4k full playback without proxies? If it can then it's mostly a cpu issue in my case i assume?
    Thanks guys.

    • @TravelerNick
      @TravelerNick Před 7 měsíci

      Source material? How much VRAM do you have?
      You're low on DRAM at 16GB but the likely issue is you're trying to edit HEVC/265 and either it's 4.2.2 (Not supported by your GPU or IGPU) or you're on the free version. I'm not sure the free version of Resolve supports GPU HEVC decoding.
      To put it in perspective I never had a problem with 4K 264 or 265 on my old 1060 6GB and a much older CPU. But I was dealing with 8bit 4.2.0. 10bit 4.2.2 needs the IGPU off an 11th gen CPU or a MUCH more powerful CPU to handle it in software.
      You should ask on the Resolve forum but Fusion is one of the weakest areas for Apple.
      Depending on your problem a Studio license can be the cheapest upgrade. But I'll repeat if you're dealing with HEVC 4.2.2 you'll need a new CPU with a current IGPU.
      FWIW A new machine will likely have faster storage and ports. Well worth the upgrade.

      @jinjibiris Před 7 měsíci

      @@TravelerNick Thanks for the reply. I'm using resolve studio v18.6 already. I've upgraded DRAM to 48GB but didn't help at all. I'm using gtx 1660 super which has only 6GB VRAM.
      Re source materials - as you said i'm editing H265 or H264 4.2.2 10bit mostly (A7iv slog3 & mini 3 pro d-cinelike footage), but even when i use 8bit footage from my phone the same frame skipping playback issues are there when i preview transitions or adding effects. Fusion is hardly usable even with 8bit mobile phone videos. I guess I will need to upgrade the CPU as you said which means a new PC basically with a new mobo, psu and ddr5 ram.

    "Lots of photo editing with occasional 4k video", sorry but no need for 1500€ of ram. Base ram config is just okay. Heavy video editing (like CZcams channel) can certainly consume a tons of ram but photo editing is good on any brand new Mac. SSD speed probably has greater impact than the available ram
