My 2 cents as a Mechanical Design Engineer and a photographer who understands both sides as consumer and creator. Niccols, kudos to you for realizing the responsibility as a reviewer and that every product is also made by similar hard working people. Having some humility, accountability and work ethic is required for both companies and reviewers. Just as engineers work hard and hope to succeed through a poduct, so do youtubers, their product being the review. Don’t act like you have moral high ground just because you have audience. Great companies and engineers love to hear feedback, it helps them improve. Reviewers have the choice to make if they want to use that on a click bait for views or be honest and make a value added content. Always remember trust is long lasting, sensationalism is not. I never ever watch CZcamsrs that rely on sensationalism to get views, I have too much respect for my own time. Overall great to hear some genuine thoughts.

Ethics being discussed on a photo channel sponsored by OM system ... I watch Chris and Jordan's videos as an entertaining way to learn spec sheets. But when it comes to tests, there have been too many "good" or "very good" AF hit rates without saying what is good (70 %, 50 %, 30 % ?). Too many recommendations of the A7iv as the jack of all trades, including sports. When my experience with the A7iv for sports is 6 FPS and fixed AF spot only to get good results (90 % sharp).

Speaking of RAW compression (for stills) - it's still better to use uncompressed just because in a rare event of storage media failure in uncompressed file you'll get just one single pixel line, with any compressed file system or HDD glitch you'll get a whole image or large part of it destroyed. Besides that lossless is ok, and for many apllications lossy is ok too.

Actually there is few topics mixed-up together (in Gerard's video and this reaction to it). Firstly is about how 'being-first-rush' didn't help produce a good review and provide people with information (except reciting press-releases). Second is about did reviewers has to disclose clearly relations and 'invitation' terms. Third is about brand strategy to undermine possibly non-pleasing reviwers/ So, personally, I've visited couple of country-wide and one whole-European events - cameras and lens presentations. It was back 15+ years agom when there was no such youtube reviewers network established. I've flew, fed and accomodated by Sony (or Zeiss once) being a member and moderator of local national user forum. Our members were eager to get first-look reports of new products (NEX system launch event in Croatia, and local A900, A77, A6000 Zeiss Batis lens line-up). Couple of selected community members as well as ambassador photographers, photogrpahy magazine journalists (that time the paper magazine were still alive) joined together, met European and one or two times World-wide Camera division management, exchange thoughts etc. Nobody ever asked us to promote some 'brand biased' opinion. Dont' know, maybe nowadays things were changed. Back in late 2000-s and 2010-s we all were excited about new gear and capabilities as well as meetings collegues.

47:57 Why not wildlife on medium format? Years ago Mamiya claimed to be 'Masters of the Medium'. Famous wildlife photographer Jim Zuckerman was known for his work in the field using medium format. Imagine hauling around an Mamiya RB/RZ with 500 mm lens? He did it and produced fantastic results. Fuji seems to be following the Mamiya model. Wide angle lenses, multiple portrait options, telephoto, tilt shift all part of the kit.

Great podcast gentleman. For those who are struggling with Apple photos, I’d like to make a suggestion. I’ve been using a program called Mylio Photos for over 10 years. It’s an amazing tool for organizing your pictures. It sees RAW and JPEG easily, whichever one you want, with the ability to instantly switch between the two. It also has raw processing capabilities that are very capable. It’s not as good as DXO PhotoLab, but it handles 85 to 90% of my raw edits beautifully. Its power as a database is unrivaled. I currently have 1.6 MILLION images within Mylio Photos. The main reason I abandoned Lightroom many years ago was the inability to scroll through my massive photo collection and at that time it was only 500,000 pictures.. Finally, Mylio’s most unique feature is it’s ability to have your photo library across a virtually unlimited number of devices. My office has four Mac desktops, three MacBook Pro laptops, an iPad and an iPhone 13 with 512 GB memory. All of these devices are able to hold my entire 1.6 million image database. That includes my iPhone that still has over half the 512 GB space available for other things. Two of my desktops are used for holding the originals which is known as a VAULT. All other devices are holding optimized JPEG’s. But I can download any original to my iPhone or any other device via Wi-Fi from anywhere in the world. This program has no equal and yet so few serious photographers even know it exists. It’s actually, a serious business advantage for anybody using it. All of this for only $99 a year and you can see it for yourself with a 30 day trial at www.mylio.com. And by the way, yes, there were many of us in the 80s and 90s that shot medium format, specifically the Pentax 645, to produce wildlife images. But I see no need for medium format in today’s wildlife photography marketplace. If you ever want to discuss the business side of wildlife photography I’d love to share my experiences from a 40+ year career making a living in the great outdoors.

In terms of a fixed lens camera with a bright lens (i.e. the D-Lux8), I still wish OM would re-release the Olympus Stylus-1 camera (28-300mm equivalent f/2.8 zoom lens), but add splash resistance and change the viewfinder from TFT to OLED. It is nice as a vacation camera where I can just stuff it into a jacket pocket. But as a vacation camera, having it be splash resistant and being able to see the viewfinder with polarized sunglasses is a big advantage. I don't always want to carry my OM-1 with 12-200mm lens, but I often want more zoom range. I was in Disney in April, and I used the Stylus-1 as a secondary camera one day. Unfortunately, I smashed the LCD in an accident, and I had to replace the camera when I got back.

Let's be honest. These "preview" videos of products offer almost nothing of any substance that you wouldn't otherwise find out much more quickly by reading a 2 minute spec sheet. I've watched a lot of Kai videos for the entertainment value, but I have never leant a single thing from his videos and I still don't know if he's a good photographer or not.

I don't really understand the poop storm. Every manufacturer tries to influence the perceptions of their products through the people that have audiences for those products. I have no misconceptions about that. I would do it too. And as a manufacturer, I would avoid connections with those influencers who don't approach these opportunities with energy and interest. Advertising 101. Hanging out with your friends and doing a video "later" isn't a good investment for a manufacturer. And from a consumer's point of view, I parse the information from all sources and make a decision accordingly. I don't need you to tell me that you were flown out to the event in order for me to judge the quality of the information you provide.

This Phase 1 camera was tested against an 8x10 film camera, equivalent lens for the same field of view and shooting Velvia slide film. The 8x10 was marginally better in all respects.....just marginally, it says a lot about the Phase 1 camera. However, the 8x10 is affordable it doesn't cost $62,000. I own two of them and a number of lenses. Its damn huge, heavy and slow, the film is expensive but the results and image quality are without equal.

Jordan, Chris, and Petapixel need to NAME and SHAME the next time a camera company puts them in the doghouse for an honest review. The only way to change the camera maker's awful behavior is to tell your viewers and readers when a camera company punishes you. And yes, actually reveal the NAME of the camera firm. The Japanese camera makers would see that as rude? Perhaps. But being put in the doghouse for an honest review is *exceptionally* rude.
