      This camera is only produced for Fuji advertising and only available to press and influencers to hype the Fuji brand. Limiting the availability helps create the unwarranted frenzy. Go for the Ricoh, at least you can get one if you're willing to wait a week or so. Or just wait for the XT-50 and throw a pancake on it if you insist on Fuji.

    We got this a couple of weeks ago before an extended weekend trip, and were insanely happy.
    We usually shoot with an R8 with an 24-70 F2.8 and find that we are bad at grapping it when walking around. It seems bulky and obtrusive on the street. But in 3 days we took about 1000 pictures on the X100VI.

    If Fujifilm is smart (and they are), when using the OVF the sensor is shifted to mitigate parallax, thus reducing the maximum range it can move for IBIS. 7:24

    • @clonkex
      @clonkex Před 13 dny

      I wondered if it was even simpler than that. What if the EVF screen (which moves down and right when you switch to OVF) physically gets in the way of the IBIS? Maybe there's just not enough space for both while keeping the full range of movement of the IBIS?

    I've been having an absolute blast with the X100VI. I use an FX3 and A7IV as my professional cameras so having something that is so compact and portable for those times where I want a camera, but don't relish the idea of lugging my heavy and more expensive gear around, it really is amazing. A lot of it is also just the approach I take with this camera, and how different it is from the way I typically shoot. Everything jpg + raw, no editing, SOOC. It's freeing.

    I don't know if you are aware, but there is a 28mm conversion kit you can get for the x100 series. I was looking to purchase this camera and i am a bit put off with the 35mm perspective from the lens. I have never used it either, but for me i want to venture into some wider landscapes with this camera and i think the 28mm conversion kit may be useful for this. I've always been a stills photographer (other than the odd video shot on my iPhone travelling or of family). I would love to understand more about different video formats. I'd love to see an episode where Jordan talked about the applications of all of these formats. For example, if I was shooting a video of one of my bands for CZcams, what would be the best format? What about for broadcast on a TV music program? What would be required there?
    As far as the X100VI ....I wish Fuji would bring out an XE4 replacement so I could have a compact camera that I could set-up with different lenses for different applications.

    Had to wait a huge 6 weeks for mine. Had the V before. Certainly worth an upgrade if you can get a good price for the old camera. The colour rendering above all else is improved with the lovely 40MP camera.
    Don't get the fuss about Reala Ace though. Definitely don't upgrade for that. Just use provia, with less saturation, a tad more clarity and less contrast.
    Few mention this, but the build quality is every bit as good as the V. If anything the quality of the dials has improved and has a bit less plasticky wobbly feel. And yes you do notice the lens is a tiny fraction longer. I think that's why there's a slightly deeper lens cap - to try to hide this a bit.
    Some might complain about the crop factors in video, but I actually use it to my benefit to get a bit closer to the action without the TC. A real shame the digital teleconverters aren't available for video, but this is one way to get around it!
    That teleconverter is rather big. The wide angle converter is tiny though.
    Tap to track really surprises me. It actually works.

    Received my x100vi two weeks ago. Sold my x100v. I, too, find the OVF just a gimmick and use the EVF. In customizing the functions I discovered that by activating "3D" level vs "2D" (3D adds a virtual horizon) the OVF is disabled. At first I thought my new camera was defective. Spoke with Fuji support and together we experimented: it's the 3D function. But I don't use the OVF so it's irrelevant. I love the new camera and can handhold slower exposures.
    I don't use the tracking AF. Access requires too much menu diving. (Sony does it better - on my a7CR and a7Rv I have subject tracking on a custom button and target selecting in a Fn field). When hand holding I prefer to focus with a center small spot then reframe and fire. I have the touch screen disabled since it moves the focus point when I don't wish it to (less of an issue on the Sony bodies where I can fold the screen closed when not needing it). Most of all, shooting with this gem is like using the cameras on which I learned 70 years ago as a child: my dad's Leica IIIf rangefinders.

    I don't mind the 35mm as an option. But as a fixed and only option, it's hard for me to swallow, and I would also prefer the 50mm in this case.
    It also needs the accessory to be weather resistant, so I would be stuck with the 35.
    It would be great if they made other focal length options. Even better if they made a full frame version with a series of compact interchangeable lenses. The money is in the accessories, so I see them releasing something like that in the future.

    I’ve had an X100S since release, and it’s a fun walk around camera. Obviously, the VI has many improvements, but the general use cases are the same. I absolutely agree that it would be more useful with a 28, 40 or 50mm equivalent lens. This is also priced too high for what you get compared to other Fuji bodies. Take the viral hype away, and this would fit nicely in the niche of a niche that it was in before TikTok.
    If you want something in the Fujifilm system that takes just about the same photos as this, get an XT5.

      Yes, except you can't add an ƒ/2 pocketable lens that close focuses to 10CM and no build in ND. I have the excellent Fuji 30mm ƒ/2.8 macro on my X-T4 or X-A7 for semi pocketable stuff, and am happier with 45mm equiv @ 2.8, and even closer focus - but it's not the size of the X100 series.

    I hope Panasonic and Olympus take notice because both have IBIS technology and can easily produce a similar camera. Even right now, you could use a GX9 or PENF with any of the pancake lenses (Panasonic 12-32mm, 15mm, 20mm, or Olympus 14-42) and have a pocketable camera with similar features. Less megapixels (20MP vs 40MP) but also less money.

    wish there were more competitors to x100vi like the powershot g1x with aps-c, full weather sealing, smaller form factor, and zoom. or another faster zx1 with lightroom editing and streamlined offloading process. or sony has the ability to make a better zx1, too. either way, i'm very glad the x100vi exists :)

    TBH, I never did gel with the x100f. I skipped the V and have the VI on order. That being said, I now feel the upcoming XT-50 will be a better buy.

    • @JamieFurlong
      @JamieFurlong Před 11 dny

      @@jolimabecause you can swap lenses. If you're just starting out, you might find you don't like the 35mm equivalent focal length of the VI. With the XT50 you'll be able to swap lenses. TBH, if you're just starting out, buy a cheaper second hand camera and save the money for a couple of lenses to find out what you like and don't like (most cameras built after 2015 are good enough). It doesn't make sense to drop $1600+ on a fixed lens system as your first camera if you're serious about getting into photography but unsure what you'll like. Don't follow the hype, the VI won't make you a better photographer and there's a ton of alternatives with more flexibility and a smaller price tag. You could pick up the XT30ii and two or three lenses for the same money, for example.

    • @jolima
      @jolima Před 11 dny

      @@JamieFurlong thx for the answer - makes a lot of sense. Actually I had the x100v for a few months and adored the form factor (doing mainly street photography so far); but I wasn’t so happy with the 35 mm and the ibis and sold it again. I had tried some other Fuji bodies in the shop, but back then then pancake lense just seemed nice a small as well was sharper in the x- then in combination with other bodies… Now thinking if the x1006 with wide converter could do the trick or I should go for a changeable lense system

    • @JamieFurlong
      @JamieFurlong Před 11 dny

      @@jolima if you're already familiar with the form factor then you're definitely in a better position to answer your question than I am. I'm not really a Fuji user and only own three Fuji lenses, all pancakes (I have an old XE2S, which I love). If you like the form factor it sounds like there's a 50mm and 28mm adapter, which covers all your street bases, but you're still using the same lens. With interchangable there's a lot more options when it comes to lenses, but maybe this isn't the most important consideration for you.

    I have been watching your videos for years and years, so it was no surprise when I heard Chris complaining about 35mm being “the worst focal length”. I was wondering if he could explain that position sometime in a dedicated video. I have the opposite opinion, as I feel 35mm focal length best emulates what I see natively with my eyes. Of course, that makes me curious as to why Chis hates this focal length. All the best.

    Funny to hear the speaker say that he shoots off the back screen. One can do that only... ONLY if one does not shoot in bright daylight outdoors. Oh and by the way, if you owned a film camera, you shot off the little optical view finder. I also shot 2x2 and this used a 2" x 2" ground glass viewer with a shield. And with my 4x5, the camera I had had a sort of folding box to provide a shadowy area so we could view the image.

    Still remember back when the X100V first came out it was easy to get, and also at very attractive price (slightly less than £800) when I got mine. Now seeing the X100VI MSRP doubled what I got my X100V for it just doesn't feel like a good deal for me to upgrade.

    I wanted an X100VI, but didn’t want to wait forever, so I got an X-T5 instead. I haven’t bought a pancake lens yet, but my theory was that an X-T5 with the short lens would be pretty close to the X100VI, but with interchangeable lenses. I don’t know all the differences between them, being new to Fujifilm, my impression now is that the XT5 is a significantly more complex camera, it is taking me longer than I expected to learn how to use it reasonably well.

    How did you obtain the cameras? Purchased? From Fuji? I only ask because the number one question, that none of the many videos I’ve seen, address how they obtained the camera/s despite lack of availability.
    I have to ask myself, is that because they purchased on ebay or other third party scalpers? If not, why would they not say how long they waited for their purchase to arrive. Otherwise it make sense to clarify it was on loan or obtained directly from manufacturer, no?

    preordered mine from a local camera store rather than one of the larger online retailers. They only took a small deposit to secure a preorder which gets applied to the final purchase price (some retailers charging the full amount with no means of delivering any time soon seemed silly to me). I figured I am going to wait, may as well wait with my order through a store I can drive to in minutes.

  • @davesearthproject

    I mean…nothing crazy that separates it from small full frame setups. A canon R8 with 28mm is of similar size but you get a larger sensor. Plenty of filmic puts for post processing. Unfortunately I did give into the hype and used this camera for a week but ended up returning. Granted…I think I couldn’t adjust because I’ve been spoiled by full frame and interchangeable lenses

    If you complain about the 35mm lens then you've entirely missed the point of the X100 series.
    I've had the X100V for over 2 years now. I would miss the 35mm focal length more than I want a 28mm focal length. The whole point of the 35mm is that it's a general purpose focal length.
    You see, the part of a photographer's brain that is constantly thinking, "Maybe I should swap lenses, or zoom in, I wish I'd brought my whole camera kit..." is freed-up with the X100.
    You have what you have, complaining won't help, so get on with taking photographs.
    I ride a single-speed bicycle a lot. It's the same sort of thing. When you have 22 gears you are weirdly never in the best gear ("Maybe I'll change up, or change down").
    When you ride single-speed you just turn the pedals and look at the scenery. You're mind is free to do what you're supposed to be doing.
