    As a camera nerd that happens to be a PC nerd : Chris be careful with that AIO in your Fractal Terra !
    By puttin the radiator at the bottom, you make the water block the lowest point in the water cooling loop ! There is always air in those loops, if not here by incorrect filling in the factory, air will get in through permeation anyway. Bottom line there is always a volume of air, whatever if it's a n open or closed loop (like you have)
    That means that the bubble of air will travel to the top of the loop, which is your pump/waterblock ! Not only you'll not get full proper coverage on the cold plate because a part of the plate will be covered by air and not water, but you have chances of running the pump dry more often than it should be ! In time that can lead to a decrease in the water pump lifespan, and you will probaby end up killing it in a couple of years.
    I understand that this was kind of a hard build, the Terra not beig made for watercooling, however I would highly suggest you find another orientation fo that CPU cooler. Worst case scenario, buy a Dan A4 H2O case, that thing is barely any bigger than the Terra (10L vs 11L I think) and is made to properly support a 240mm AIO !

      @kuyans3889 Před 5 měsíci

      I'm glad someone mentioned this! Chris, definitely keep an eye on whether or not the cooler is operating properly as time progresses, if you keep this configuration. You don't want your CPU to run without cooling.

    • @niccollsvideo
      @niccollsvideo Před 5 měsíci +6

      Definitely appreciate the advice. I am 100 percent confident that this aio will get air bubbles in it. From time to time I’ll flip the case and dislodge but once air is in there, it’s in there. I’ll keep an eye on temps and an ear on gurgling noises.

    The problem with MFT is that both Olympus and Panasonic seem to have forgotten that one of the reasons people prefer that mount is because of the compact nature of it. Unfortunately, they're focusing just on their larger bodies, and while yes, the lenses are still rather small, a newer GX9 or Pen-F wouldn't go unnoticed. I've been looking for something that size for travel and video work, so naturally I went Sony, despite having been a MFT shooter for the past few years.

      But Sony doesent have compact lenses for APS-C. Canon for example has a good 22mm f2 and great 32mm f1.4.
      The Sony APSC primes are just to big and many very old. I really tried tp buy into it, but kept my A7C because there is no really downsizing by switching to Sony APSC.
      And you are absolutely right, we need smaller mFT bodies with PDAF.

    The s5ii/x do have some underrated photography features that don't get enough credit. They gave us handheld high res (only one on FF?) which wasnt even promised, you can shoot 65:24 in camera, and you can create your own fuji'esque profiles via live LUT. Also little things like you can exposure bracket 7 images compared to 3 on the r6ii and a7iv. It makes an excellent landscape/city scape/architecture camera. For portrait, it keeps up with its peers for less money.

      So far I've not figured out a way of doing 65:24 in combination with handheld high-res, which would be nice if it was possible 🤔 But otherwise agree, it's an excellent photo camera as well as video camera. Its only major downside compared to competitors is the slow mechanical shutter, as the sensor is too slow for electronic to be useful for action.

    Canon needs a $1000-1500, 450-550 gram set of f1.4 lenses... their f1.8/f2 lenses are cheap and plasticky and MEH and their f1.2 primes are insanely huge and expensive. Sony's f1.4 lens lineup is incredible, but Canon is making amazingly innovative zooms (28-70, 24-105 2.8, etc).

    • @karikaru
      @karikaru Před 5 měsíci +13

      This is Canon's whole marketing strategy though. You get in buying affordable t_i's and 1.8stms and if you want to become a "serious" photographer you save your shekels for a year or two and drop it on a FF body and a 50 1.2 and hope you can land some gigs to make up for it. This is exactly why I left Canon for Lumix. With Lumix bodies and sigma/Lumix glass, they'll give you the working professional's body requirements and IQ at a much more approachable price for the entry to professional work tier.

      @missile3236 Před 5 měsíci +4

      @adamwhittingham86 I wouldn't really say this is the case, yes it will be significantly easier with very expensive glass and a high quality body, but a lot of professionals can get away with an r8 or r7 (r7 is solid for wildlife and intro sport photos) and a cheap prime or zoom. Maybe save up for something like an ef 24-70f/2.8 ii for 1k or some of the older ef primes which from my experience are still very nice lenses. Generally, your knowledge and skill will outperform people with better equipment, especially at the entry level.
      I do agree with the general sentiment that panasonic or sony are much more entry level friendly, and the sigma and tamron lenses are a very good starting point for not a ton of money.

    IMO, this was one of the most exciting years for MFTs. That 90mm macro is a phenomenal lens. 2x magnification with good AF on macro on a small sensor?
    There is likely not a single other out of the box camera system that is remotely comparable in handheld super macro capacities. You can get similar results through other systems, but always requiring big work arounds or the loss of important features like good autofocus. And in camera photo stacking? Gosh golly.
    That being said. The lack of other news in the system makes me nervous. I've been concerned about it eventually dying for a while.

    Been a lifelong MFT user and I agree with your assessment. I'd give them a solid D-, not because they didn't release too many products this year but because they have been absent from the media for far too long. I understand that OM system doesn't have the resources to go up against the big 3 but atleast give us updates about future development. Even a lens roadmap would be nice. And don't give me the spiel about the two zooms on there. Everything on the current roadmap has been there since Olympus and OM have yet to put out something new. I desperately wish to gift myself a 300 f4 this year but I will not do so unless OM shows some commitment to furthering the format.

    Fujifilm needs more cameras that suit the design philosophy of crop sensor focus. Give us our poor man's Leica back. I actually left the brand this year because my X camera and they don't have anything really smaller than the a7CII or significantly lighter than the R8 - two full frame cameras.
    They haven't done much in terms of improving their AF or IBIS either. Leaving them at the back of the pack behind Panasonic. Plus, they failed to keep upto demand on their popular models, while their bigger sports and wildlife bodies sat on shelves.
    They seem to be floundering and making mild incremental improvements while trying to go in 5 different directions at once.
    Hopefully this year they give us something smaller and lighter than the a7CII, and something for the compact prime shooters too, maybe a nice Weather sealed mark II for the 18f2 pancake?

    Dear Jordan, I use a number of vintage lenses on my Fuji x-s10 and they work great with adapters and focus peaking. Especially as they are nice and lightweight in my opinion they make more sense on aps-c bodies instead of full frame, and as mentioned you don’t have to worry about corner sharpness on the lens itself. My personal favourite is my 50mm 1.7 Konica hexanon tack sharp and lovely bokeh and cost me under $100. I always recommend vintage glass to people if they want to try new focal lengths but can’t afford new af glass. Just my two cents though. Love your work as always though 😊

    Love the PP podcast and watch all of Chris‘s and Jordan‘s reviews, even those that are not relevant to me. I have been a analogue shooter in my youth, using the Minolta Dynax 8000i with some cheap kit glass before switching to digital in 2006 when bought the original Canon 5D. I stuck with that until 2017 which is when I replaced it with the 5D iv. Glasswise the EF 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L ii, and the 100-400 f4.5-5.6L II pretty much covered all I needed. Finally, in 2022 I called it a day for DSLR and bought an R5. I did replace the original EF 24-70 with the RF 24-70 but adapt the other 2 EF lenses because I am no fan of the external zoom of the RF 70-200 f2.8L and despite all the good reviews of the 100-500 I am not into it enough yet to replace my EF 100-400. Sorry for the long intro, I am coming to the point now: on the R5, the early year rumours about firmware updates were so promising but what came out was in fact very disappointing. We still have that stupid recording limit and even though the auto focus of the R5 is probably still state of the art, some continuous improvement would not hurt. On the glass side I am dreaming of an RF 600 f5.6 DO with built in 1.4 extender. At the long end it seems Canon will have a lot of catch up to do in 2024 to keep up with Nikon and Sony. Over all, for me and my photography, Canon did not fair too well in 2023. Let’s see if they do better in 2024.

    In relation to bird and wildlife photography and focus issues. One critical thing to remember with long focal lengths is the impact of atmosphere (moisture, dust etc).
    Long focal lengths are great for creatures that don't want to be close to you, but depending on the atmospheric conditions of the day, the limit for really sharp images might only be 30m/100ft. One way to test this if you have an image that looks soft is to use the same gear with the same settings on a detailed subject closer to you. If it's consistently tack sharp, then it's likely that the problem was the amount of atmosphere between you and the subject and switching gear won't have helped.

The macro ratio is simply saying that the image on the sensor is twice the actual size of the subject. It has nothing to do with sensor sizes. I guess you're saying that to fill the frame with the same subject on each system you'd need a 2:1 and 4:1 lens respectively, but that totally ignores the pixel densities of the sensors. The MFT-sized center of Sony A7R5 is 15M pixels, as opposed to the 20M pixels of a typical MFT sensor. That's nothing like a 2x advantage for the MFT body, more like a 33% advantage, i.e. equivalent to a 2.7:1 macro on the Sony. You'd have to qualify your statement with "for the same pixel-count sensors" to be accurate.
    ETA Actually it's even less of an advantage than that. The "macro ratio" advantage is actually the square root of the pixel count advantage, so the 2x macro on an MFT would be closer to equivalent to a 2.3x macro on an A7R5.

    (you can drop the alive bit on the username, long story short lost the original account with that name): The reason people don't go for the 120 CLC (closed loop coolers) is due to the same relative performance as a decent tower cooler when fully saturated with heat. Noise reduction is one of the main benefits of a CLC if that's what you're going for.
    As for the adaptors, I'd love to see how the modded KAF to E mount adaptor from Monster Adaptors performs and even how much performance the glass that Pentax has is left on the table when not bottle necked by the sensor/body for photo and video respectively (see if you can get the A7RV or the A9 III for those tests).
    Lastly, would love to see more manufacturers get their camera bodies and lenses ipx rated, in particular the full-frame bodies. Sure the lighter telephoto glass for om system is nice but when doing street and photojournalism in adverse environment the field of view benefit that full frame has despite the increased body size is something that can be worth it (the om cameras withstanding the fine dust may or may not withstand some of the CS gas types out there for example)

    The Z8 is actually quite surprising to say the least... gving the highest-level pro-sumer body almost the same featureset of the more expensive pro-level body. This isn't something that too many cameras companies do (and the differences are rather minor overall but at a decent price difference). I was sort of expecting a bit more closer to a Z7 II experience but with perhaps improved AF (probably something like what the Z7 III will actually by) and not really a smaller sibling to the Z9. So I think Nikon did a good job there. The Zf... I don't know. It checked some boxes for some people (those who wanted a Zfc but didn't like the fact it was APSC and lacked IBIS perhaps). So they fulfilled that in a way, but I think they should have really released a Z6 III first (in 2023) and then postponed the Zf to 2024. And while the Z6 III may be very similar to the Zf in terms of performance and specs, I think more people were asking for the Zf but in a Z6 II body (thus a Z6 III) and so I think Nikon could have captured more sales in 2023 and now if they had reversed the two and did the Z6 III FIRST and then a Zf. My guess is the audience that was asking for a Zf was probably much smaller than those asking for a Z6 III, which was quite a few from what I gather. And especailly after the Z8 release, a Z6 III I feel would have made a little more sense.

    I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer currently on the MFT system. I don't get paid for any of my photographs, but I do have a decent budget and the very quiet 2023 for the MFT system made me look elsewhere. I would have normally looked at Canon or Sony, however Canon's lens lineup is very weird (either too expensive or feeling very cheap) and Sony bodies are simply too small for my hands (especially if you pair them with a 70-200 f/2.8 or a bigger telephoto lens). I've started looking at Nikon and the Z8 is very interesting (my first SLR was a D40 and I've always lusted for the D8xx series of cameras from Nikon until I switched to mirrorless) and the lens lineup is very, very appealing so I'm seriously considering a switch back to Nikon later this year.
    I know the G9 II is not in the same price bracket as the Z8, but I want to upgrade my camera and also get a good 85mm lens for portraits. I can buy the G9 II and the 42.5mm f/1.2 Nocticron for roughly $3600 or I can get the Z8 and the 85mm f/1.8 S for $4600 and I'd argue the difference between the G9 II and the Z8 is much bigger than $1000. I'm also looking at a long telephoto and Panasonic has the newly released 100-400mm f/4-6.3 priced just $100 cheaper than the Nikon 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3, which is shorter, but if you put it on the Z8 you can crop quite significantly.
    A year or two ago I was a bit concerned that Nikon was close to bankruptcy, but now I am impressed with how well they have executed their plan and how appealing they must be for enthusiastic amateurs like myself.

    Canon not doing too well in the lens market is where they should be dinged pretty heavily. I agree controlled your quality with no 3rd party lenses can be a good strategy so nobody gets burned, but things are just coming out too slow for how compelling their cameras are. They are delivering great value in their bodies, and the APS-C ones are quite nice for the price, but there is no APS-C midrange zoom. My friend has an R10 and is looking at a 24-70 F2.8L (which is a phenomenal lens), which I think is absolutely ridiculous for a sub $1k APS-C body. My sony and fujifilm midrange crop sensor cameras have access to the Sigma and Tamron Midrange zooms (~$500) and that's where most people who don't do pro photography should be. The best entry at the moment is a 24-105 f4 and on crop sensor that is just not good

    • @elzafir
      @elzafir Před 5 měsíci

      I think that's the main problem with a crop sensor sharing mount with full frame: the crop sensor lens will always be lacking in both quantity and quality.
      The dogma used to be to buy a cheap crop sensor body and full frame lens, so when they upgrade to full frame in the future, they can still use the lens. But it will never happen. When they upgrade to FF, they'd buy new FF lenses too lmao.
      This is why an exclusive crop sensor system like the X and M43 have a place in the industry: you get a lot of body choices and a lot of lens choice, so much so that you won't need a full frame camera unless for the most extreme situations.

You can't rely on AF when shooting this stuff, no matter how good your camera's AF is. The best way to do it is to leave the focus where you want it, then move your whole body back and forth to achieve sharp focus.

    I have been a Canon shooter since the 1970s, which speaks a lot about my brand loyalty. I am, however, considering switching. I am getting on in years, and heavy gear isn't for me any more, so I am interested more in apsc or m43, and currently use a Rebel SL2. I appreciate that Canon have released several r-mount apsc bodies, but only one with IBIS, which I am finding I need as well. Regrettably, I suppose, I also invested a bit into the now defunct M mount by Canon, which I still think is wonderful. While I appreciate that I can use FF lenses on apsc, I don't see the point. The fact that Canon hasn't produced even the equivalent of the M22mm or the M32mm lenses for apsc, concerns me to the point that I don't want to get stuck once again with an overlooked system. Sorry to leave, but Canon has not, and I doubt will, give me what I need.

    Not sure about Nikon to Sony, but I’ve had some luck using the sigma adapter for EF to e-mount. Most of the lenses af works (except on my favourite 300mm f/4 😢), it just sometimes only works with stills and not video. Using eye af it’s mostly still quite usable for moving pets, albeit in lower light it struggles a bit.

    Can you do an updated wildlife system video comparing Sony, Canon, and Nikon? If money were no object ($20,000+). The R5 still has amazing eye-AF but my understanding is Nikon has caught up with the Z9 update. Sony A1 remains excellent overall but lacks some of the newer AI AF. Sony's lens lineup is great for their "compact" primes like the 600mm f4 and 300mm f2.8. Canon has some unique lenses like the 100-300mm f2.8 that nobody else offers and potentially an upcoming 200-500mm f4 but their large primes are disappointing, basically just EF lenses with an adapter slapped on (RF 600mm f4). Nikon has probably the best lens lineup with the 600mm f6.3 PF, 800mm f6.3 PF, and 600mm f4 TC.

If you are using the Z8 or the Z9 adapted glass will work wonderfully, often better than in a D800 or D750 but it won't work as well as native with features like eye AF. But please see Matt's test or you are going to fail following PetaPixel comments because they have like 4 years of not testing the adapter, and back then Nikon AF was deficient in general. The Zf appears to be handling G and E AF lenses well, but I have not tested it with action yet.
