      Other hot contenders: Lumix S1ii (I'd assume rather than gh7. Especially as it would make sense for Panasonic to supply an S1ii together with the lens) and Canon R1. My camera shop dude said something of new Sony-cameras and Nikon Z6iii seems to be a possibility (though not really rumoured yet). Someone said R5ii in the chat but why would they release that together with the R1?

      @@hendrickziegler8487 I think the most likely cameras are the GH7, Nikon Z6III, Lumix LX100II, or the S1II in that order from most likely to least likely. Sony and Canon are possibilities as well its just I haven't heard a name for any of there cameras coming in the next month or two so I doubt its in reviewers hands if we don't even have a name yet. The reason I said GH7 is because those other 3 cameras have major road blocks for showing up in a video like this at this point in time. Nikon doesn't like sending cameras out they prefer to send out a rep with their camera. The LX100II seems a bit out of place for this video but it is the most rumored camera currently. The S1II has had no info leaked at all other then some form of the S1 has been registered.

      I'm not sure why you'd want to compare those two. First off they are for different systems, and then the Canon has twice the range, costs three times as much, and weighs 50% more. Nobody would seriously weigh those up against the other.

    • @kevindiossi
      @kevindiossi Před měsícem +8

      @@MarcelVolker the comparison exists by the simple fact they share faster than an F/2.8 aperture as a full-frame zoom. These are the kind of lenses that someone like a wedding photographer would jump to a camera system for because they’re incredibly unique. It’s not like it’s a run-of-the-mill 24-70 f/2.8 that every system has, it’s something that stands out. You’re correct that these lenses are at separate price points for different systems, but they are both attempting to achieve similar goals with different approaches.

      While this is not a lens available to me (Canon shooter), I am contemplating the same idea of "is this useful?" Initially I was like, "wow, a really limited zoom range." Then I got to thinking about when I use a standard zoom lens, most my shots are in the range this lens can shoot, 28-40mm. At least half of my shots at any event will be in that range with a 24-70mm. Not to mention the 18-35mm F1.8 they made for crops is a similar field of view after crop factor is considered, and that lens was very popular (granted part of the reason for that may have been the lack of options for a fast, constant aperture standard zoom for crops). I agree, I probably couldn't use a lens like this, but there certainly will be those that will find it a dream come true.

    Hats off to Sigma. Creating some sensational glass lately, and competition at the premium end is good for everyone as consumers, especially when they're keeping prices very reasonable.
    That said, this is the focal length I personally would use for street, landscape etc and it's very bulky for those kind of 'walkaround' scenarios. I'd probably just go for the 35mm f1.8 Sony which is cheap, small and excellent. Horses for courses though... Credit for being creative in their lens design.

  • @zbieraj
    @zbieraj Před měsícem +4

    The problem is that for the same price, you can get the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8. An important note: in the 35-45mm range, the Tamron still maintains an f/2.0 aperture (it only goes to f/2.2 at 50mm). It is 5mm longer and 215g heavier than the Sigma. Additionally, the Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0 is coming, which according to rumors, will be half the size, half the weight, and half the price of the Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8. And Sony is about to release Sony 24-70mm f/2.0 for the price (again, rumors) between this Sigma and Canon 28-70mm f/2.0.
    While it is the brightest full-frame zoom ever made, it doesn't offer enough in terms of range, size, and weight to be truly competitive with what's already available on the market, especially considering what's about to be released (such as the aforementioned Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0).

      question is what about optical quality of those mentioned lenses? I have seen one review with direct comparisons of Sigma 28-45 to Sony GM 50, 35 and 24 primes and it was consistently against all 3 primes slightly sharper in centre but softer on edges. Also Sigma had less CA than GM primes.
      24-70 have better range, but also a whole list of problems. Beginning with worse sharpness and contrast, way worse CA (especially that new Sigma 24-70) and also dust gathering extending tube. So 24-70 f/2 is possibly comming soon, it sounds awesome on paper, but it also would have to be a significant improvement over 24-70 f/2.8 GM II in sharpness, contrast and CA. And even though 25-50mm f/2 also sounds great on paper, we wont know if it really is as good as it sounds until its released, tested and results compared.
      Sigma 28-45 is a lens full of compromises. Less versatile focal range, large size and more weight for superior image quality, more light gathering and possible subject separation and better weather sealing.
      IMO it would pair really well with 70-200 GM II. Both with its focal range and its weight and dimensions. Only if they both had same filter size too...

    08:36 "...just a hint of onion flavoring..." but can you smell it on your breath afterward? But seriously, folks -- this lens seems to be an amazing technical achievement, but like other commenters, I'm struggling to figure out what the use case would be. It's 'way too big and heavy for a walking-around lens. As to "replacing a bagful of primes"... well, for urban photography, most people are going to want to carry something longer than 45, and possibly wider than 28 as well, so not much being replaced there. The range of view angles -- 65 degrees horizontally for 28mm and 44 degrees for 45mm -- is only 1.5x, not a very big difference, and one that for still photography with a high-megapixel still camera could just as easily be bridged by cropping. That leaves the only sensible uses I can think of being as a "framing zoom" for video (except for the focus breathing, oops) or maybe concert photography where you want a bright aperture and are confined to a fixed position (although you'll still need to carry something longer than 45 for tight shots.) Sigma may have just accomplished the feat of creating a brilliant lens that hardly anybody actually needs...

    As an event shooter, I was contemplating the idea of this lens even though I can't get one (Canon shooter). The wide aperture is great, the zoom range feels a little limited. However, I do tell people all the time my most used FL range with my standard zoom is 28-40mm. At least 50% of my shots take place in that range at an event. So for me, that other 50% is still too important for this lens to be useful; maybe if it were more like 80% of my shots, but 50% is too much to give up. But, you mention the 18-35mm F1.8, which has a very similar field of view to this lens after the crop factor is considered (as it was a crop only lens). That lens was very popular. Granted, that could have been from the lack of other options for that kind of lens (fast, constant aperture standard zoom with a wide enough angle of view to be useful indoors), but I am just saying that I bet they see a similar level of success with this lens.
    I was really hoping for an update to the 18-35mm and 50-100mm F1.8 lenses from Sigma in mirrorless mounts. Currently adapt an 18-35mm to an R7 and it's friggin great.

    Canons 28-70F2 still blows this out of the water in terms of versatility… woulda been cool to see something similar to that made by sigma. The 28-45 just seems limited, as much as he says he doesn’t like 35mm, at that focal range I would rather strap a 35 1.4 to the camera lol.
