  • Need to tow 8,700 pounds with your three-row crossover? You basically have three options: Durango, Durango, and Durango. More specifically Durango SRT Hellcat, Durango SRT 392 and now the Durango RT 5.7 with the funky-named Tow N Go package. Oh, and there's a new dashboard for 2021.

I love the Durango for its combination of major towing specs, V8 grunt (which includes that sweet Hemi exhaust note) and available 2 speed transfer case AWD that allows it to be flat towed behind a bigger motorhome. Add three row seating and you can’t find that combination in any other vehicle. Thanks Alex!

That 2 speed transfer case locks the clutch pack in low mode.. making this sorta an AWD 4WD hybrid.

Yes the Durango may look out dated a bit. But it is an all around good towing suv. I like the fact that you can get the wider tires and better breaks on the regular 5.7 as an option. The sound of the SRT 6.4, if it can be had for a good deal.....is the way to go !

When you add the driving impressions video, take a moment to mention reliability. More specifically, the drivetrains offered are mature, refined, and mostly bulletproof. I feel like as much hate as the FCA vehicles get, it’s an injustice not to point this out. Especially compared to the German stuff, which by comparison is unreliable and overpriced.

Alex when discussing max towing it is imperative to talk about payload capacity. If your towing 8,700 pounds that means you have at least 870 on the hitch. When you subtract 870 pounds from the Durango’s payload capacity that is the max weight of passenger and cargo. For the Durango that leaves you 720 pounds. 3 passengers and some cargo and you’re right at your max payload. Personally if I were towing over 5,000 pounds I would only consider a full size SUV such as an expedition or a Tahoe/suburban. I never want to max out my vehicles capabilities.

Got just an 18 R/T with tow package for about half of what a 2021 goes for. I’m ok with my 7200 lbs towing capacity. Still plenty - and 8700 is just amazingly impressive for this segment. My F150 twin turbo ecoboost is rated for 10300 so 7200 is plenty for an SUV.

The new dash is really an awesome upgrade. The Tow-N-Go package is a great bargain.
What is not a bargain. Is the insurance on the Durango. The insurance is 220% of the cost of our Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L coverage. Yet they are similar value. And my Durango is a 3.6L GT AWD.

  • @james2042
    @james2042 Před 3 lety +2

I am actually looking at this as a cheap half ton pickup replacement. For 55k msrp you get effectively a fully loaded (minus insane engines) dodge durango, and in order to come close to that in a half ton pickup (their own ram 1500) you are spending easily 65k. Sure if you need the bed for work then you need the bed, but if you don't and just want the towing, this makes for a MUCH better daily driver with 4 corner independant suspension over still having a solid rear axle, a full time awd system rather than a part time 4wd locking center, better weight balance and probably better fuel economy since its lower to the ground.
I would actually love an f150 with the ecoboost but I would either be getting a spec-ed out XLT or a basic lariat depending on what features I valued more for that price. The one thing that might be worth it is the powerboost, as now were talking an alleged 24mpg vs the durango's realistic 16, and 50% fuel economy improvement combined with a bigger tank is just a dream come true

Just get a Tahoe LT. Body on frame is the way to toe. Sure your Durango may say it tows up to limits you say, but it will sway on highways. Get a body on frame SUV or truck.

It really doesn't sway at all, I tow 8,000lbs all the time. Sway has little to do with the unibody vs BOF design, it had to do with the design of the entire tow vehicle, weights, wheelbase, etc.

Durangos do not sway. In fact, it has a longer wheelbase than a Tahoe, with self-leveling rear shocks, and other tow goodies. It tows very well for its size.

I bet the Durango has a pretty beefy frame under there. Unibody simply means that the body is welded to that frame. It's not like a car unibody.

The Durango needs a serious facelift....looks like a vehicle from the 90' at best

Seems Chrysler/Fiat manages to keep selling a lot of cars/SUVs that are just old, old, old by cramming big V8's in them. Seems towing is about only reason to chose a Durango. Aren't most of them poor quality with dated interiors. Hope the finally new models coming will finally update these platforms.

Just fed up of these Dodge cars.. No investment in changing the exteriors, just selling same design for decades

They’ve made updates where it matters most IMO. Why use a clean sheet design when they can just build upon what they’ve got? Won’t last forever but I do appreciate the vehicles they’ve made in the past couple of years.

there companies that keep changing styles every year but FCA still sells way better than them with some models (not all), look what GMC did to the blazer or Ford with their Escape.
