    This time in our Community Shop Tour series we're looking at some envy-inducing shops, either due to the number/quality of tools or the amount of space available. These folks put a lot of time and resources into the design and organization of their shop space, and it really shows! So grab a paper towel for the drool and enjoy.
    Special thanks to the folks who took the time to submit these tours:
    Erick Ridout in Utah
    Scott Timmins in Tennessee
    Mike Gervais in Utah
    Bob Cooper in S. Carolina

    I never considered my projects, skills, or shop worthy of note (thanks Mark!) there's 45 years of horse trading and craigslist upgrades in my shop...very little new and many, many gracious friends who've kept an eye out. I do mostly volunteer projects for others in need, friends and neighbors (my wife can attest) and have the good fortune of having family members who fell trees and donate a lot of hardwood to the cause. My shop is a converted Ag barn then an autobody/mechanics shop and finally a well-insulated and equipped woodshop...it has some warts but it serves me well. Appreciate the kind comments and constructive criticisms. Woodworking is a journey and source of continuous skill building. Giving back is the most rewarding.

    These videos are fun, even if some of the spaces or tools are out of reach for most. We can learn from or gain inspiration from much of it, even if it's just shop organization, or tool layout. Good stuff.

  • @dmmaxwell

    I don't think "if I had those tools" is necessarily about skill, I think it's about efficiency. I'm pretty good with a hand plane, but that doesn't mean I would give up my planer. Some projects are much more attainable, especially for hobbyists with day jobs, with the right tools.

    • @Rufio1975
      @Rufio1975 Před 8 měsíci +3

      Some people aren't thinking about it that way. Some actually mean it like, " if I had those tools I'd be able to make that also". They forget hundreds of years ago people didn't have these fancy tools and still made awesome furniture.

    • @BiggMo
      @BiggMo Před 8 měsíci +5

      It’s about enjoyment not skill. Working in a small shop and fighting with tools takes the enjoyment out of it. And when you don’t enjoy the process, the outcome can suffer

    • @Rufio1975
      @Rufio1975 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@BiggMo
      I think it's both. The better you improve your hand skills, the better you enjoy the process and the easier it gets and you end up enjoying it more. I enjoy the process but not as much if it doesn't turn out looking too good or if I'm not improving. Beginners need to remember that it takes time.

    I’m surprised and happy that someone finally said that the jointer was one of his favorite tools. I have nothing close to that one but my 10in benchtop Cutech I bought has totally transformed what I do. I can’t believe people don’t make more of a big deal about them. There are more videos out there that tell you that you don’t need one, than videos that show you how to use them and tell you how useful they are. I will have a giant one someday

      @@glenngulley1375 I think “Game Changer” gets thrown around a lot and don’t get me wrong, there are a lot out there because there are so many facets to woodworking. A shop full of equipment, hand and power tools would be great but not a necessity. I’m a hobbyist woodworker and love making things, but most of all I love the challenge of making amazing things with what tools I have. I can usually find a way to do what I want without professional grade tools, it gives me a whole new level of pride for everything I make. I mean no disrespect to those who have the equipment, it’s simply not in my budget.

Having been blessed to be able to upgrade a few pieces over the years, I am always amazed when you find that tool that makes something you have used for ages easier and more efficient. Case in point, my Festool track saw. A straight edge and circular saw for twenty plus years. Two measurements, clamping..... Track saw is so much faster, more efficient and amazingly cleaner and more accurate cutting.

    0:55 An air duct system that continually increases in diameter towards the cyclone isn't actually beneficial unless many machines are operated simultaneously. If you're the only one using your shop, all you've created is a system where the wood chips more fast close to the machine and slow down the further away they get (assuming you actually close blast gates to machines not in use). Doesn't really hurt anything as long as the chips stay airborne though, but is extra work, extra expense and I'd rather have smaller duct work in my ceiling if possible.

June 3rd, I had an auction and sold off the entire contents of my wood shop. 40x40x 12’ high that had heat and air, with another 40x40 for wood storage, dust collector and compressor. I kept some hand tools, and my Festool stuff, but everything else went. I think I miss my 25/50 drum sander the most. Also had a 60x60 CNC router, that I was really finally getting proficient with. Oh well, life goes on. It just sucks not having anything to do.

      @@woodwhispererIs it more important to have lots of tools in a small space, or good lumber storage? At least one of those small shops had no lumber storage at all...

    I think the most important aspect to a shop is square footage.

    It's less about tools and more about space and time for me. I don't have a shop, and I have to basically schedule time to do anything.
    I see people complain about having small shops, well it can certainly be worse....

    Tools always come in time you can save to get anything. For me it's the shop space I have about 75sqft so the big nice tools wouldn't even fit haha 😢

    I didn't see a milling machine nor engine lathe in any shop. I have to have a mill and engine lathe for wood working because I was taught the metal way for wood working.
