- In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train drivers view between Graz - Austria and Maribor - Slovenia in 4K/60 frames per second.
This journey will take us along the Southern Railway from Graz to the Austria Slovenia national border and then along the Spielfeld-Straß-Trieste railway to Maribor.
The Southern Railway is a railway in Austria that runs from Vienna to Graz and the border with Slovenia at Spielfeld via Semmering and Bruck an der Mur. Along with the Spielfeld-Straß-Trieste railway (lying largely in Slovenia), it forms part of the Austrian Southern Railway that connected Vienna with Trieste, the main seaport of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, via Ljubljana. A main obstacle in its construction was getting over the Semmering Pass over the Northern Limestone Alps. The twin-track, electrified section that runs through the current territory of Austria is owned and operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and is one of the major lines in the country.
The Spielfeld-Trieste railway is a double-track, electrified main line in parts of Austria, Slovenia and Italy. It was built as a section of the Austrian Southern Railway. It runs from Spielfeld-Straß over the Austrian-Slovenian border at the Municipality of Šentilj, continuing via Maribor, Ljubljana and the Slovenian karst to the Adriatic port of Trieste, today in Italy.
On the video (44:59) we can see the construction of the new rail line between the border with Austria and Maribor. The 3,73 km section was opened for traffic on 15 August 2023. A 1530-metre long tunnel was constructed together with the 912,6-metre-long Pesnica viaduct, the longest railway viaduct in the country. Trains will now travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h, instead of 80 km/h. The previous tunnel and viaduct were built in 1846.

Wau, supertoll! Finde es toll mit dir am Führerstand mitfahren zu können. Hab mir alles angeschaut, gleichzeitig macht mich vieles aber auch traurig...die letzten schönen Streckenabschnitte sind der eingeleisige Abschnitt rund um Wildon sowie Leibnitz bis Spielfeld... da ist noch alles offen und vor allem grün! Der Rest der "modernisierten" Strecke mag zwar toll sein wegen der 160km/h, allerdings geht es mir schlecht mit all diesem "Grau" überall...nur mehr graue Wände, graue Plastikwände- eingesperrt und zu allem Übel auch noch graue Bahnhöfe.... Schade, selbst der frühere grüne angemalte Bahnhof Wildon wurde schon vergraut- aber ein Wunder, dass dieser noch Bestand hat und nicht abgerissen wurde so wie der Leibnitzer Bahnhof, der mal in der Farbe "lila" wunderschön strahlte... heute alles grau! Mich schaudert es vor den noch bevorstehenden Ausbaumaßnahmen, wenn dann der Rest der Südstrecke auch nur mehr aus grauen Mauern besteht-wie im Knast... Gsd muss ich da nicht mehr fahren! LG

BTW, the double-track expansion to 15 out of 30 kilometers between Werndorf and Spielfeld-Straß is underway and is to be completed by 2033. The expansion includes the existing 5 single-track sections of 10:33 Werndorf-Wildon, 12:45 Wildon-Lebring, 22:20 Wagna-Retznei, 26:30 Retznei-Ehrenhausen and 28:25 Ehrenhausen-State Border AUT/SLO, as well as the 31:05 Spielfeld-Straß border station [Slovenske železnice SŽ calls the station Železniška Postaja Špilje].

@@phi9495 Aktuell werden in der West/Süd/Oststeiermark 3 Planungs-/Ausbau-/Elektrifizierungsprojekte realisiert:
90 km GKB (Graz - Wies bzw. Köflach) bis 2025/2028
80 km ÖBB Steirische Ostbahn (Graz - Staatsgrenze [Szentgotthárd]) bis 2028
30 km ÖBB Südbahn (eingleisige Abschnitte Werndorf - Wildon bzw. Wagna - Spielfeld) bis 2033.
Auf diesen insgesamt 200 Streckenkilometern, fallen die Planungs- und Bauarbeiten zeitlich überlappend an.
x Streckenelektrifizierung und teilweise 2-gleisiger Ausbau,
x Bahnhofsbauten (Um- und Neubau),
x Tiefbauten (Brücken sowie Über- und Unterführungen als Ersatz niveaugleicher Übergänge, Tunnelausweitung),
x abschnittsweiser Ausbau für V-Max 160 km/h,
x Signal- und Sicherungstechnik (ETCS, ESTW),

Das stimmt nur bei der GKB.
Die Elektrifizierung der Ostbahn wire mal wieder Jahr um Jahr verschoben und bei der Südbahn wird vielleicht (und hoffentlich) die Zweigleisigkeit geplant. „Realisiert“ - also in die Realität übertragen - wird hier noch lange nix…
Wenn wir schon so lange als Realisierungszeitraum sehen wäre interessant, was genau geplant ist.
@@phi9495 Ja, keine Ahnung ist auch eine Ahnung. Tatsächlich ist ein Ausbau erst dann vollzogen, wenn die dabei errichtete INFRAstruktur planmäßig in Betrieb steht [auf der Tauernbahn-Nordrampe konnte ein neuer Talübergang 10 Jahre nicht in Betrieb genommen werden - Ausbaugegner hatten das bewirkt].
Aktuell werden Verkehrsdienstleistungen auf den genannten Strecken ab 2028 nur mehr unter Elektrotraktion vergeben.
Den Ausbau- und Elektrifizierungsarbeiten gehen Planungs- und Genehmigungsverfahren voraus. Diese müssen abgeschlossen sein, bevor die Leistungsausschreibung und Vergabe für einzelne Bauabschnitte erfolgt. Zu kritisieren ist, dass die Ausbaumaßnahmen auf der Südbahn nicht stringent erfolgen, sondern eher nur nach Freigabe der Mittel.
Auf der Steirischen Ostbahn sind die Hauptarbeiten für 2025 bis 2027 vorgesehen. Nötige Betriebssperren müssen dort so erfolgen, dass der laufende Bahnbetrieb zumindest außerhalb der Ferienzeiten aufrecht bleibt. Auf der Laßnitzhöhe muss der Tunnel erweitert werden. Dieser wurde in seiner Errichtungsphase aus dem Lehm gehauen. Noch vorhandene niveaugleiche Eisenbahnkreuzungen werden aufgelassen oder durch Über- / Unterführungen ersetzt. Neue Bahnhaltestellen errichtet und bestehende (Bahnhöfe) umgebaut. Auf den dafür geeigneten Abschnitten im Raabtal wird die V-max auf 160 km/h (dzt. 120 km/h) angehoben. Leider wurde die NBS auf der bereits genehmigten und "baureifen" Trasse zwischen Gleisdorf und Feldkirchen bei Graz um ein (weiteres) Jahrzehnt aufgeschoben.
Auf den noch nicht ausgebauten 15 Kilometern der Südbahn steht der Neubau von 2 Brücken an und der Umbau des Grenzbahnhofs Spielfeld noch aus. Die Abschnitte der Bestandsstrecke entlang der Mur wurden hochwassersicher (zu) nahe den Abhängen zum Flusstal errichtet. Das schafft durch instabile Hänge Probleme (Vermurung) und verursacht temporäre Betriebssperren. Hier "rächt" es sich, den Ausbau immer wieder (und parteipolitisch motiviert) verzögert zu haben.

Worüber ich mich aber nicht so freue sind die vielen Einblendungen über entgegen kommende oder irgendwo abgestellte Züge.
Meiner Meinung nach sind wohl die meisten Zuschauer an den schönen Landschaften interessiert und nicht an irgendwelchen Zugtypen.
Nichts für ungut, trotzden schaue ich auch weiterhin deine tollen Videos.

Perhaps that construction will begin shortly. The double tracking and electrification of the Ostbahn to Marchegg and the Slovakian border is almost completed.
@@dck578 Construction for re-building the second track _has_ already begun. The two-track section around Leibnitz is new, as are several underpasses which have been rebuilt with a second track in mind.
I thought the new viaduct and tunnel were going to be featured in this video. But still a nice ride, thanks =)

Auf dieser Fahrt gab es wohl einige Zwangsbremsungen!? (auf österr. Seite)
Zwei Stück, beide jeweils 4 Sekunden nach einer 1000Hz-Beeinflussung. Also hat der Tfzf entweder ein klein wenig zu früh oder zu kurz die Wachsamkeitstaste betätigt (einige Baureihen sind da ziemlich streng, um nicht zu sagen "zickig" - in vielen Führerstandsvideos sieht/hört man den Lokführer die Taste 2-3x drücken, damit sie auch sicher registriert wird).
Veramente un magnifico film, congratulazioni ! Certo che la tratta Graz-Retznei, tutta piatta, è la parte peggiore come paesaggio della vecchia ErzherzogJohannbahn Vienna-Trieste, poi invece il paesaggio diventa molto bello fino Maribor. Purtroppo la mania delle ferrovie europee di non disturbare porta a questi lunghi muri (almeno fossero trasparenti.....) che in certi casi creano veri "corridoi" a visibilità ridotta. Questa tratta, come l'intera linea, nacque a doppio binario (lo si capisce osservando la sede) tolto nella seconda guerra mondiale e non ripristinato. Poi le ÖBB cominciarono a raddoppiare oltre Graz, a volte anche a sezioni, ma senza fretta, si parla addirittura del 2033. In Slovenia invece per la tratta Maribor-Pesnica si lavora per un nuovo tracciato, ma verso il confine sarà più complicato visto che la linea è stata modificata non tenendo conto della vecchia sede. Sarà lunga anche qui. Il punto esatto del confine si vede facilmente dal cambio dei pali della linea aerea. Con piacere si nota che le stazioni slovene sono ancora presenziate dal Prometnik (Fahrtdienstleiter in Austria dove invece è tutto in telecomando).Curiosità: in origine vi era un lungo viadotto fra Pesnica e l'inizio salita, il viadotto Pesnica, che scomparve negli anni trenta coperto da terra ed esiste ancora sepolto sotto, un vero mistero. i due episodi successi al km. 38,8 dopo un avviso 60 e al km. 45,3 dopo un avviso 30. il macchinista comincia a frenare, ma si ode come un botto e il treno subito si ferma, e poi riparte. Guasto al sistema di frenatura? Errore del macchinista con l'Indusi? Altrove non succede. Mistero.

nice as always! is the line on undergoing maintenance and refurbishment? i went in Graz last year and i saw the new stations! i hope OBB doubles all the line. Nice Mur Valley and the Hills in Maribor! we returned in Sousaland! Your Nation! Little Maribor, how many records! after a long trip from Innsbruck! Thank u and i will stay tuned! I saw in the website there 's a segment of former Feve's line Santander - Oviedo! i hope u can make a long trip straight to Ferrol in the future. Line crosses Cantabrian and Asturian Mountains, close to Galizian seashores until Ferrol naval base.
@wladislaw79 The long term plan is to make a double line all the way to Maribor. Not sure when. About Spain, yes, you are right. I did a short trip over there, but my initial plan was to film all the way...the weather did not allow me to do so. And now I know why the area is called Costa Verde. it is very green after so much rain.
The line is in the process of being double-tracked (again, as it was originally built with two tracks, but one was removed after WW2). A first double-track "island" is already in operation around Leibnitz (14:30), multiple underpasses and small bridges along the line have already been rebuilt for two tracks (the old double-track bridges over the Kainach and Sulm rivers can still be seen at 12:25 and 24:12 - but those have been sitting there for over 70 years, so they will likely have to be rebuilt as well).
In Slovenia there are several sections that are currently being upgraded; the new Pesnica viaduct and tunnel (44:55) were put in operation just a few days ago (albeit currently with only one track, but of course wide enough to add a second one in the future).

Thank you for the video, beautiful nature and good shooting. Questions: Why is there left-hand traffic on 2-track sections in Austria? And why was the second way taken apart? Reduced train traffic? It is clearly visible both on bridges and in tunnels.? If you know - answer.
In Österreich ist der Gleiswechselbetrieb Standard. Nur ein letzter Teil der Südbahn und die Franz-Josef-Bahn (Wien - Absdorf-Hippersdorf) haben Linksverkehr. Auf der österreichischen Südbahn wird nur mehr südlich von Bruck/Mur links gefahren. Der Abschnitt von Bruck/Mur bis Graz Hbf wird mit Inbetriebnahme der Koralmbahn per Ende 2025 auf Rechtsverkehr umgestellt. Im rund 50 km langen Abschnitt Graz Hbf - Spielfeld-Straß bleibt vorerst noch das linke Gleis das Regelgleis. Voraussichtlich bis 2033 und bis nach Abschluss der Ausbauarbeiten im Streckenabschnitt Werndorf bis zur Staatsgrenze AUT/SLO nächst Spielfeld.
Hauptgrund für das Abtragen des 2. Gleises (1956) waren Reparationsforderungen im Zusammenhang mit WK II, die von Russland an Österreich gestellt wurden. Ein weiterer Grund war das erwartete geringere Verkehrsaufkommen.
Im Bf Leibnitz fand bis 2004 die Zollabfertigung grenzüberschreitender Güterzüge statt. Im Grenzbahnhof Spielfeld-Straß fanden bis 2004 Zollkontrollen statt. Personen- und Passkontrollen erfolgten noch bis Ende 2007.

To answer your Question, left side traffic is special only in the province of styria as far as i know, i guess thats a remaining piece of the british occupation of styria after ww2. The removal of the 2nd track was due to the fact that slovenia was part of the east in the cold war and therefore no railtrafic crossed the border and given that the demand for 2 track did simply not exist..
Somehow it feels like all this great infrastructure is completely under-utilized and under-appreciated

@phi9495 Danke! I am not sure if it was a D train in Austria. They just opened a short part of a new line in Slovenia, the new Pesnica viaduct and tunnels and there are more ongoing works on the line. I heard that in Austria too, so maybe the trains from December will run on those new parts already.
@@RailRelaxation There are currently no construction work in austria (Line Graz - Spielfeld-Straß). I hope they are planning, but it will take until 2030 to 2040 for construction.
From December 2023 SZ Flirt will be used to operate the actual D Graz - Spielfeld-Straß in future Graz - Maribor.

It was not that smooth as usually that I would expect. There were some sudden stops and slowdowns with no obvious reason. This is not what I would consider as ''usual'' and this is what I find odd. However - as things have background and reason than I guess that it was just ''a normal reaction of a driver on give circumstances''. @@RailRelaxation

Dem Fahrgeräusch und der Höchstgeschwindigkeit nach war das ein Desiro (ÖBB Baureihe 4744/4746/4748). Die sind zwar zweisystemfähig, aber leider nur 15kV/16,7Hz (Österreich, Deutschland, Schweiz) und 25kV/50Hz (Ungarn, Slowakei, Tschechien, sowie die Raaberbahn in Österreich). Sie können also nicht nach Slowenien (3kV=) fahren.
edit: es steht eh in der Videobeschreibung: ÖBB 4744 bis Spielfeld und SZ 312 von dort bis Maribor

@@heinerle456 Das Video wurde auf zwei verschiedenen Fahrzeugen aufgenommen (Graz-Spielfeld: ÖBB 4744; Spielfeld-Maribor: SZ 312). Der slowenische Triebwagen hat anscheinend (oder "anhörend"?) tatsächlich eine ganz leichte Flachstelle, ja.
@@stephanweinberger Ab 17:45 rollt das Tfz aus, um vor dem Signal der Überleiststelle zu halten. IMHO ist dabei ein "Klopfgeräusch" zu hören. Detto beim langsamen Beschleunigen zur Weiterfahrt. Ja, auch das Tfz der SŽ verursachte dieses Geräusch vernehmbar.
Noch eine Frage: Sind die 3 D-Züge (2 davon mit 33 Minuten Fahrzeit) zwischen Graz Hbf und Spielfeld-Straß für eine (künftige) Durchbindung bis nach Maribor vorgesehen? Haben die SŽ Tfz für beide Systeme?

Ad Durchbindung weiß ich leider nichts. Aber einige ÖBB 1216 bzw. die SZ 541 können 3kV= und 15kV~.

Weiß jemand, warum das Teilstück zwischen 10:40 und 14:30 nur eingleisig ist?
Für den Streckenabschnitt im Wildoner Bereich war lange nicht klar, ob man diesen Bereich umfährt oder doch anschließt. Der Umbau ist halt aus Kostengründen nie realisiert worden, wird aber in den nächsten Jahren nachgeholt...wieder mit grauen Mauern beidseitig....

Gern geschehen. Auf blöde Fragen gibt's halt auch ebensolche Antworten. - Es wäre halt hilfreich, die Minute des Videos anzugeben, wenn man eine Frage hat. Der kurze Aufenthalt zB am Deckungssignal der Überleitstelle Wildon 3 (kurz vor Leibnitz) zur Minute 18:14 erfolgte, weil ein vorausfahrender Güterzug im Bf Leibnitz langsam einfahren mußte und wir deshalb warten mußten, bis die Strecke (bzw der Blockabschnitt) von diesem Güterzug (dem wir in Leibnitz vorfahren) wieder geräumt und ganz frei war. Aber da war ja ein sichtbares Hauptsignal. - Der Aufenthalt wegen einer Zwangsbremsung auf freier Strecke in min 30:18 resultierte aus einer Unaufmerksamkeit des Triebfahrzeugführers, der beim Einfahrvorsignal des Bf Spielfeld-Strass zur min 29:58, das "Hauptsignal frei mit höchstens 40 km/h" anzeigte, die Wachsamkeitstaste der PZB (Indusi) nicht betätigt hatte. - Noch eine Frage?

War wohl ein sehr penibler Desiro, der die Wachsamkeitstaste genau im richtigen Moment und für die richtige Dauer betätigt haben wollte. Einige Fahrzeuge sind da wohl ziemlich zickig und registrieren's nicht wenn man auch nur eine Zehntelsekunde zu kurz drückt.
