- We're looking at another unique line in Switzerland in this video.
During the railway boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, railways were not only built between major cities and industrial hubs, but also to smaller profile regions. This seemed to have been the case worldwide, with most of the smaller railways being phased out when larger investments were needed, or when cars and trucks gained prominence.
Switzerland too lost a few of it's smaller railways, but no where near as many as other European countries. This is one of those railways, that may have been abandoned in favour of other services in another country, but it continues to be maintained and optimised to meet the demands of the present.
The major portion of the two railways we'll see in this video, used to share the road with other traffic, however over the years, as you'll see labelled in the video, the tracks have been moved to reduce crossings and increase the overall safety of the line. As a result, we will actually be travelling on two former SBB trackbeds, one between Aarau and Suhr, the other between Reinach and Menziken (the former line from Seetal to Beromünster).
The line was formally also used to freight traffic, with special facilities that allowed normal gauge wagons to "piggy back" on narrow gauge bogies. The stations Suhr & Oberentfelden both had the necessary equipment to allow these transfers. There are still some remaining narrow gauge railways that continue the practice today.
For anybody wondering, the two blinking lights inside of a Rhombus tell the driver that somebody would like to board at the upcoming station. Some stations are request stops only, and have buttons to press near the platform to stop the train.
Another little note, the inclines shown in the top right corner are the maximum inclines on the line until the next station - unlike in other videos, where they usually only apply to the section of track following the signal.
The other lines we have looked at that operate in a similar fashion (in close proximity to the road) are listed here for those who are interested:
Seetalbahn: • ★ 4K 🇨🇭Lenzburg - Seet...
• ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Luzern - Seeta...
Waldenburgerbahn: • ★ 4K 🇨🇭 Liestal - Wald...
• ★ 🇨🇭4K Cab ride Walden...

I love all the side-of-the-road running! I suspect some of the interurban railways in the US might look like this if we still had any. There's a very Japanese feel to this as well.
😊 no worries
No litter either. 😮 beautiful Europe 🇪🇺
I love routes like this that hug the roads... gives a "at home" feeling!!
That was a fantastic ride. A very quiet smooth train. The rides that seem to go in the middle of the roads of the small towns are very interesting. You can see a lot about each town as you go through it. Thanks for showing me a part of Switzerland that I will never see in real life.
Glad you enjoyed it :) Thanks for your comment.
It is always exciting to see the scenery here especially up in the train cab
it is very beautiful and awesome to see both the city and the rural areas
as always a really great train ride Thank You.🇨🇭🇨🇭🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🇨🇭🇨🇭
Thank you very much.
Hirschthal. Autumn. The clock on the tower on the right strikes 4 pm... :)
This is definitely my new favorite video of so many enjoyable, informative trips you and crew have provided. It is a perfect blend of scenic ride, wonderful towns and history. Thank you, Alessandro and everyone!
Thank you!
I have to visit Switzerland someday. The country is so BEAUTIFUL!!! 🤗🥰 ❤️
It starts off looking remarkably similar to Japan aside from the finer details. A lovely ride.
Typical autumn weather, Switzerland still looks good !!
Enjoyed the ride through the towns and countryside, thank you, Alessandro, for providing the recording 😁
It might be a short trip, but the platforms are busy. If people use it, keep it going.
Amazing trip! Thanks to Alessandro for recording it.
the aesthetics and the cleanness always amaze me ,so perfect . immaculate
That was a very relaxing journey
Enjoying with a cup of coffee ☕️ & music....Euro vibes🎼😊
Very, very cool. Enjoyed this 100%. Grateful for your videos! Thanks!
My first visit to Switzerland as an independent traveller was in 1981, so I had a chance to ride this hidden gem in its former form and missed it. Your historic annotations are much appreciated as a result. The acceleration is a marvel. Thank you for sharing.
Meanwhile, have you managed to drive either of the new freight routes enabled by the Birr-Mägenwil curve? \m/
Yes, my premier was last week and I filmed it, despite the rain :)
@@lorirocks777 congratulations! \m/
Oh yes, this is the one that crosses the standard gauge line on the level isn't it. And the one that comes in next to the main line station at Aarau, yes. Very interesting.
Thanks for another great and interesting route. I have always hoping this route was filmed.
I have seen the route from Lenzburg to Zofingen and i remember that level crossing in Oberentfelden
Light rail systems are the most fascinating of all the railways to me. I love watching how they share the roads with other vehicles. It surprises me that there are no idiots parking on the sidelines though blocking the tram access!
It is amazing to see trains running alongside roads and footpaths without safety barriers! One would have to assume that the accident rate is high.
Would one now. Why?
It's not a tram, but it's definitely towards that end of things, and trams routinely run on roads without safety barriers. The reality is that if people follow the rules then the accident rate will be low. The Swiss can be relied upon to follow the safety rules to a very high degree. It's a very positive aspect of their culture.
Really enjoy side by the road videos, you can almost sense the atmosphere as the trains ride so close to the roads and cars and pedestrians. Brilliant. Cheers.
A great journey through the suburbs. Thanks for sharing.
thank you for posting this wonderful rail tour .we completely enjoyed it.
Hallo und Dankeschön fürs Mitnehmen. 👍🏻😊
Hallo in Unterkulm passiert häufig Zug Unfälle am meisten mit Autos .Danke führs mitnehmen😊
Another great trip. Thank you. What is the purpose of the cable between the rails? I can try guessing, but I'd rather have fact.
Typical slick working there4:40; both trains arrive simultaneously. Church bells are nice too
thank you very very much !
very enjoyable indeed thank you!
Amazing train ride from Switzerland.
stunning, you'd think one would get bored of these vids...I still very much enjoy them...esp. with new routes. I also love how the train (or tram?) cuts through a city but discreetly.
Glad you like them!
@@lorirocks777 Thanks. 🙂
I'm really looking forward to your update. It's a great driving trip.
A nice trip :)
Amazing journey
Cool, 1 metre gauge. I have an LTT mouse mat wider. 👍
One of your best and most interesting videos Lori!
Wow, thank you!
great video
Danke aus Griechenland ❤❤👍👍
Parabéns pelo vídeo 📹
Nice videos
Yay 😀. Another L777 vid. Can’t wait 😛 to view it!
❤❤❤❤
Great ride, thanks for sharing.
Is it safe to say that these trains are basically buses? They seem to serve many towns
In a sense maybe..
@@lorirocks777 certainly in bad weather/snow

Excelente video!
Strange lighting at the Oberkulm station, as if it's on the same frequency as the camera.
SPAR........
really cool video!! I would just recomend always leaving the max speed at the button right, its always cool to know what speed the train can do at that part of the line and because of how small it is, it is easily "ignored"
I would disagree, if you are watching the screen all the time it is easy to remember. Then you get a full uncluttered 4K experience. Plus the speed pops up enough times due to the speed changes.
Muito bom
Nice journey thank you, Is it classed as a tram or a light railway?.🦘🐨
The logic of trains passing usually dictates passing right side to right side(Swiss trains) in passing loops or stations but this railway does not follow that logic. It is more like first to arrive gets the road. The access to the 'road' being the safest for passengers who would need to cross tracks. So passengers from the second train do not pass in front of a leaving train?
Greetings from Down Under 🇦🇺
Another stunning video! Absolutely beautiful, I love watching these videos. Thank you for going to the trouble of filming, editing, etc, to bring us these remarkable videos!
Just a quick question, are there many incidents involving vehicles vs train, since there doesn't appear to be any barriers between the road and rail line or sidewalk?
That would never work here, pedestrians would be getting cleaned up by trains all over town everyday & the streets would be littered with wrecked cars... 😂
There are some. Here is a video that was made to sensitise people to the dangers: czcams.com/video/pzrHRx0LmAc/video.htmlsi=YP1LALzRxr0XeSZz
@lorirocks777 Just watched the video,. Wow, silly people are risking their lives because they can't wait a minute until the train passes. Defies belief.
How many tracks closed in the latest 25 years! It doesn't happen only in Italy... However, very interesting video!
It's so curious to see the track and the street side by side without any protection. Expert car drivers?
Is this a train or a tram line? It confuses me on how it merges with traffic at some point.
It's more of a train line, similar in style to the Seetalbahn which also shares the road at times. The difference is that this railway is 1 metre gauge, which is the same as used by trams in Switzerland.
@@lorirocks777Ohhh ok that is so cool tho! Really loved the video :D
💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
🤠👍
Didn't Luzern want to pay for the line to continue to Beromünster?
At one stage the line from Beromünster was supposed to go all the way to Triengen.
@@lorirocks777 Interesting! Probably via Sursee then? It makes sense to link up with another railroad. Too bad for Triengen, though. So that's probably why Triengen has an airport!😄
What a unique gem! Even by Swiss standards, this is a remarkable route, whose roots as a tramway are obvious. I'd bet today's service is far and away the fastest in the history of either arm of the line. Thanks so much for posting 👍
Terrible map at the start. It appeared they would be reversing at Aarau. Since they didn't, how did they wind up going in the opposite direction?
Thanks. I take pride in how terrible I can make things. If you look closely we enter from the left and exit to the right. No reversing required.
More like looks as a tram than a railway.
It's Switzerland. The dividing line between "tram" and "train" is very blurred!
Why are the controls so clunky.
Because it's an old train...?
Thankyou
wooden railway sleeper at february 2024 ?????????????????????
