  • I needed more! Swapped my TC Bros 8" mini apes for their 12" mini apes, along with installing the Triumph High Bar cable and wiring kit. In this video I show a little bit about taking the old parts off, but unfortunately ran into some snags and neglected to record putting it all back together again. I hope this still provides some insight for anyone who might want to try this for themselves.
    Bars: TC Bros 12" Mini Apes, 1" chrome smooth
    Grips: ODI Vans Cult
    Bags: Burly Brand throw-over Voyager
    Windscreen: Dart Marlin

    You mentioned your video wasn’t maybe as good as someone making a more professional version. I can’t tell you enough how much this video is going to help me with my conversion. You gave a very good detailed account of your process without a lot of extra nonsense bling. I for one appreciate it. Thank you

      Thank you. I decided to try making some videos because I'm always doing projects and I can't always find what I'm looking for on youtube so figured I'd make my own. I still don't record half the stuff I do or try but I want to make an effort going forward. Thanks again!

    Yep, I love the 12 inch bars. In my mind the 12 inch bars make the Speedmaster look more like a classic.

    Very cool and useful videos man. Inspired by you to own and customize a Speedmaster here in Brazil. Just reserved mine with the dealership. Keep your videos coming and maybe share with us some ride vlogs too.

    Looks great! BTW, I see you attached Burly saddlebags, do they fit under the rear seat pad or did you have to modify them? Sorry to hijack the thread! 👍🍻

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  Před 22 dny +1

      Yes, they do fit under the seat pad! It's been a while since I first installed them, but I seem to remember removing some rubber feet off the seat itself to make room. Putting in the retaining screw for it requires pushing the metal tab down a bit as well. But it definitely makes them secure.

    Hi, i like your video and also like the 8 inch chumps. Do you have to use extension cable kit for the 8 inch bar? Thank you!

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I did not - however I did have to re-route the brake line and clutch cable to the rider side of the triple clamp.

    Hey Dave I was curious about how much shorter the triumph mini ape is compared to what you installed. You said that you discovered the triumph mini was shorter. Im in the process of trying to figure out handlebars Im a short man to but older with arthritis. If you had to do it over again would you have used the triumph Minis ? great videos.

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi, the reason I did not go with the Triumph bars is because they are pinned straight up and down and I did not like the look, and it would have made me reach further (defeating the purpose). If you wanted something not as tall, I did have the 8" bars previously which are slightly lower.

    Really great Vid and as you say we didn't need to see all the faffing around trying to get the kit to work you photos of what you did are enough. I'm changing my bars as I'm the same height as you but hoping to get away with risers and LSL flat track bars. I've gone for then id controls so don't mind being slightly forward rather then sitting dead upright..... time and distance will tell if that works. It' annoying how motorcycle manufacturers have a 'one size fits all' design policy. One question... did you drill the new bars for the peg on the throttle assembly?

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  Před rokem

      Yes, I drilled the new bars. I've seen that some folks grind down the locating nub but drilling wasn't that hard so that's the route I took.

  • @chrisoftheot6272
    @chrisoftheot6272 Před rokem +1

    Afternoon Dave - I also have a 2022 Speedmaster. Although I love the beach bars, I had to swap to high bars too. So sad! (See my video.)
    I didn't want to go for aftermarket bars as the drilling/filling required, and the 'hanging over the edge' grips just didn't seem right to me. Also, I'm a woosie. I watched your video of the 8" bars before I bought the Triumph stuff and the re-routing of the cables seemed a real hassle too, so I went for stock stuff - less the risers.
    Dave, do your bars wobble about? Mine have a good deal of wobble 'cos the bars are rubber mounted. Do you get that?
    Cheers,
    Chris

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  Před rokem

      Hi Chris, just watched your video. All I have to say is WOW, that's a lot of play. No, with both the 8" bars previously and now the 12" bars on the standard risers, I do not have any play whatsoever. I don't have a manual so I was surprised that there are no torque specs given for those. I wonder if they can be tightened further (I assume you've tried that). I never moved/removed my risers so I can't comment on how tight the bolts were or should be.

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  Před rokem

      To follow up again, I just dug up the handlebar instructions, and it looks like there is supposed to be some sleeves that go inside the rubber bushings on your risers (above and below). Make sure those haven't been removed. Also the instructions give a torque rating of 38Nm.

    • @chrisoftheot6272
      @chrisoftheot6272 Před rokem

      Morning Dave - you're a wonder! How did you find that torque setting? I've looked all over... (How useful it would be if I had a torque wrench!) It's a real fiddle to get to the bolts under the top yoke (or, 'triple tree') 'cos of those cable guides, but I'll tighten them further - if only for peace of mind. (38Nm is only 'comfy' in terms of tightness, I think?!)
      I was surprised that you said you 'do not have any play whatsoever'. I've always had some - even from after I had the high bar wiring kit installed by the dealer. The rubbers I have now are the new ones that came with the high bar kit, which also includes new 'sleeves, flanged, handlebar' T2045065. (Older sleeves seem to have been one piece, new ones are half length, two pieces.)
      I'm out for a ride tomorrow, all being well, so I'll let you know how I get on after I've tightened the risers some more.
      Thanks for the input Dave. 😊
      Cheers,
      Chris

      @@chrisoftheot6272 Search for Triumph Fitting Instructions 9900829 for the high bar kit. It's hidden down at the bottom of page 7.
      I even went out to my garage yesterday thinking perhaps I just never noticed, but no, I can pull and push pretty hard on the bars with no play.

    • @chrisoftheot6272
      @chrisoftheot6272 Před rokem

      Morning Dave - stone the crows, I've looked at that instruction sheet a million times, but I've never noticed that torque setting. I fear I may be a moron. (I rather focused on the 24Nm setting for the clamps.)
      I'm out shortly - riding to Swansea in Wales - but I have re-tightened the risers. The bars are more rigid now, which is good, but I wonder how much more than 38Nm I may have gone? (I used a 5", 14mm open spanner with one hand, hoping I wouldn't go over by much.)
      Anyway Dave - many thanks for the pointer. I can't believe I missed that torque setting. Honestly...
      I'll let you know how it rides tomorrow.
      Cheers,
      Chris

    Did you sell the 8in bars ? Was it really that big of deal with the switch housings ? And drillling the joke out for throttle ..

    • @davesdiy9836
      @davesdiy9836  Před 11 měsíci

      No, I still have them along with a pile of other motorcycle parts in my basement. The switch housings were not a big deal, just take your time. I did drill out the throttle hole, just started with a center punch, then a small bit as a pilot hole, then the actual bit size I needed.

      @@davesdiy9836 Are they chrome if so do you plan on keeping them are selling them ? also with the aftermarket bars the biggest thing his the part that the grips go on is shorter so you have to use a differnt grip but know big deal right.And also with the 8 in bars you did not have to undo the break lines are clutch correct.

      @@leviteeler1629 For the 8" bars I had to re-route the brake and clutch lines, yes I had to disconnect them to pull them through to the rider's side of the triple clamp. Not sure if I'll keep or sell the old ones, I may hold on to them for a future project. Different grips fit but I have ditched the bar end caps in favor of a closed-end type grip.
