I have had an equal nightmare with a Speed Triple 1050RS with 1,200 miles on the clock which had serious issues the day it was delivered from Laguna Motorcycles in Kent. Battery as flat as a pancake, couldn't even start it let alone ride it. Then after 4 days of battery on a charger, as it was heavily sulphated, I could finally start the bike but couldn't get it into neutral except by turning it off. Kept giving false neutrals changing up and down the gearbox. A few trips to my local Triumph dealer who adjusted the clutch seem to briefly solve the issue although the problem soon got worse again. Then it started jumping out and back into 4th gear which became progressively worse quite quickly. Even applying the slightest throttle roll on in 4th from 2k revs right up to 7k it would violently jump out and back into gear. Hazardous to say the least and potentially it could have fatal consequences if lent over in a bend and rolling on the throttle. On a damp or slippery surface the consequences are not even worth thinking about as the risk of losing control of the bike would be so high.
Concerned about the safety of riding my bike I contacted Laguna again, the guy who sold it to me did not want to know. he argues with me suggesting the problem was my incorrect use of my bike. What an a-hole! I have been riding bikes for 30 years! By this time I had found out that this particular problem on the Speed Triple RS 1050 was a known problem. Thirty pages of pain on the Triumph Forum from similarly disatisfied, desperate and annoyed Triumph owners. Quite a few had finally got repairs under warranty but these were hard fought battles and Triumph very much gave the impression that they DNGAF which they don't. No recall of the bikes.
Anyway with my bike becoming basically unrideable as it was dangerous and finding a dealer who would firstly look at it t diagnose the problem was almost impossible. All the ones local to me were all busy for many weeks, several months and a few simply said they did not have the staff nor expertise to undertake such a large complex repair. A few like Laguna still refused to accept there was a problem with the gearboxes of the Speed Triple and me informing them of my bike's issues was the first that they had heard of it. They didn't even concede that in December 2019 Triumph was forced by VOSA to issue a recall on the bike on the grounds of safety as a gear selector linkage could potentially foul the QS if fitted meaning a bike could change gear without warning potentially destabilising a bike potentially causing injury or worse. Laguna refused to collect my bike and address the problems I was having with it when I contacted them following delivery which was in breach of my statutory rights. The could not in any case look at to diagnose the problem for 8-10 weeks as their workshops were so busy. This was the biggest f*ck off I've ever had from any retailer on any product I have purchased.
I was stuck. My bike was unrideable. I hadn't even ridden it one mile without a problem with it and serious problems developed with in the first 80 miles. I had ridden barely 300 miles when the gearbox was effectively kaput. 1,200 miles from new and a bike needs a new gear box. Not very impressive is it? So I share your pain and distress with your unreliable Speedmaster.
Anyway fast forward several months of me not riding my bike as it was in my garage still unrideable and no dealer to look at it. I was contacted my another unhappy Triumph owner on the Triumph forum who turned out to be my saviour in finally getting my bike looked at and repaired. He recommended a Triumph dealer in Yorkshire some considerable distance from me. I contacted them and they were extremely helpful. They could look at my bike in a couple of weeks so long as I got it up to them. So I hired a van and took it up to them start of November 2022 some 8 months after it had been delivered to me by Laguna in Kent. The technicians at Triumph W. Yorks test rode my bike and within 50 yards diagnosed that the gearbox needed rebuilding as 4th gear had failed and also 3rd was on the way out. They advised the repair should be covered under my Triumph warranty but the warranty company had to approve. I brought my bike home as the dealer couldn't store it inside and it was winter. I then went through a fraught 7-10 days waiting to hear whether repairs would be covered. Eventually after some frank phone calls and contacting Triumph aftersales customer service, repair was approved DESPITE this being a KNOWN problem for which a recall should be issued on the grounds of safety. I heard Tigers also have issues with their gearboxes as basically Triumph gearboxes are weak.
All the parts for the gearbox repair came into the dealer after about 3-4 weeks and it was due to go back for repair just before Christmas last year, but owing to bad winter weather, my schedule, I didn't actually get my bike back to the dealer until mid january. They had scheduled 3-4 days to do the actual gearbox repair and address the other issues with my bike which were present on delivery. Unfortunately I would have to pay for these myself which I have had to do. I am still in the process of reclaiming the cost of these and other out of pocket expenses from the original dealer and Triumph. A gearbox failing after only 1,100 - 1,200 miles is NOT sarisfactory in the slightest. A product must be of suitable quality and durability and free of defects at the point of sale which my bike was NOT. I don't believe they ever serviced my bike prior to delivery despite me expressly requesting this and paperwork. service invoices to support this which Laguna never suppled me as well despite me requesting many times. It was an express term of the sales contract and something I specifically requested prior to purchasing the bike.
I finally went to pick up my bike in mid february of this year 2023 almost one year to they day it had been delivered with all the problems it had had, but now sorted out. It was a massive relief that i could finally get to ride it properly without it trying to kill me or the fear of it stranding me at the side of the road.
My experience with Triumph as a brand? They are seriously shit. I would never ever buy another of their bikes. Their customer service trying to sort out customers who have had problems, serious problems with their bikes is woeful. In fact it's not customer service as it is just non existent. If I had not been contacted by chance by another disgruntled Triumph owner who incidentally had had problems with his Thruxton and experienced a dreadful Triumph dealer, wanting to help me, then my bike would still be sitting in my garage collecting dust, a giant useless £11k paperweight. Simply the biggest disappointment, worst purchase and biggest LOSS I have ever made.
Anyway today having only ridden approx 200-250 miles since the gearbox rebuild my Speed Triple RS seems to be running as it should. The gearbox is ok, no jumping out and back in with any gears scaring the living daylights out of me, no more flat batteries as I insisted a new battery was fitted. Yeah it's riding as it should have done when it was first delivered to me over one year ago but wasn't. I am now trying to get the suspension sorted out as the spring rates are for a far heavier rider than myself meaning the ride is very stiff and unforgiving, but hopefully with slightly softer springs the suspension will be more compliant and comfortable. Well this is the intention.
As regards Triumph as a brand? Nah, I wouldn't give them my money again. No. The irony is that whilst I was having all this stress with my Speed Triple RS I was actually contemplating ditching it for a Speedmaster as I love this bike BUT I hadn't even been able to ride my Speed Triple RS at this point. I took the view that I was just setting myself up for more pain by chopping it in and purchasing a different model of Triumph. Not only are the bikes themselves unreliable but the Triumph customer service is about as bad although I did eventually find a good Triumph dealer, most are pretty hopeless and a few are just plain crooks, but one or two are diamonds in a bucket of crap.
Caveat Emptor, buyer beware!

I think it's a (miserable) reality of life that some dealers are dreadful. I've heard stories of bike and car dealers behaving similarly badly. Really horrible. It goes to show how important it is to find a good dealer, and how it's worth travelling a good distance, however annoying & inconvenient. I have to go on a three-hour round trip to Exeter - more in traffic, and much more when I have to get the bus! But I need good service...
As I say, a miserable reality of life.

@@chrisoftheot6272 Unfortunately I think you are right. Tbh I don't like buying anything above and beyond daily or weekly food shopping at my local supermarket, but even this has it's moments ........ I have had too many bad experiences. I just hate dealing with shitty companies.

Since 2005 I've had triumphs a rocket 3. A 2008 speedmaster. 2014 America LT with bags and windshield. And I just purchased a 2023 chrome edition T100 cobalt blue. I find the bikes easy to work on and have had no issues with any of my bikes. I'm sorry that you had issues could be more dealership issues than triumph issues! 🤜🤛🤔
Afternoon James - thanks for commenting. Yes, I agree that I've had dealer problems...! If Dealer X had done the engine inspection they said they did back in January, it would have saved me many months of agrivation and expense: but they didn't.
Triumph have been supportive and helpful so I've no real complaints there (although they could have put the rings in properly at the factory!). Still, it's mended now.
Nice to see you've got a Chrome Edition bike - they look so good. I trust you'll enjoy this as much as the other Triumphs you've owned.

I own a 22 Speedmaster with about 6K miles on it and so far no issues and I really like it. I also just traded my 09 FJR for a new 22 Triumph Tiger 660 so you can say I've got all my motorcycle eggs in a Triumph basket...so to speak. I really feel bad and can sympathize with all your frustrations. I've owned a Honda and Yamaha before this for about 20 years with no problems. Have to admit I'm a little nervous after listening to your video. Good luck!

As I've said before, I wouldn't worry about owning a Triumph as my situation is so rare: I've never heard of anyone else have these problems, especially Speedmaster owners. I've just had bad luck, but I believe the brand is still good!

I remember the days when bikes didn't have throttle position sensors, and they didn't have Neutral switches, and they would always start. Technology can often be a curse.
Evening (again) Ray - well, I'm a regular technophile so I wouldn't agree that tech can be 'a curse'. I'd also have to question whether old bikes 'would always start'!

Well i can sympathise but feel you have been extremely unlucky Chris. My Speedie has been (touch wood) no problem despite spending it's first two months off the road being repaired due to the usual myopic motorist. Although I haven't done your sort of mileage, I've been cautious about dealer involvement to the point that I would not buy from my local Triumph dealer, and preferred to travel 75 miles to one I felt I could trust. Glad you still enjoy the bike and hope that any major problems are now behind you. I too am considering the Free Spirits belt drive conversion, and enough seem to have been sold/fitted to establish their quality/reliability. Good luck and many smiley miles. Chris 👍

I understand about 'travelling 75 miles' to find a trusted dealer: I do exactly the same! It works fine, but borrowing a bike costs money - not something I had to worry about at Harley.
And, I'm just finishing a video on the belt drive option (compared to chain or shaft), so I'd be interested to hear your opinion on that one.

Hi Chris, was in a Triumph dealer yesterday wanting to look at a Speedmaster but didn't have any as they are in big demand. Was wanting to add one to my list of bikes. One of my HDs is a belt drive but I prefer chain. My 77 XLH (owned since new) is chain and I have no problems with it. Still has it's original front and rear sprockets and I use a sealed link chain. I don't use oilers but do clean it regularly and use a spray on cling grease then rub it in. My 69 Starfire (owned since it was 1½ years old is still using her original set of drive sprockets. My 62 A10 is still using her original drive sprockets and I owned that since 1972. Even if you were not looking after the chain properly in that short time they shouldn't have worn out. Triumph must be using sift materials. I hear there is a problem with the gear selectors in them, have you heard this? Going by your troubles I think I'll go to plan B and buy a Pan America instead.
Really sorry to hear of your troubles Chris. I know money can be tight just now but I wouldn't taken up Triumph's offer of a replacement bike and walked away from that bike. They probably would've replaced the engine. It is a shame to sell it to a poor unsuspecting new owner. I hope you get sorted out soon but I will not go near Triumph now after watching this video. Other owners have said Triumph factory responses are shockingly bad. Good luck!

It's good - not to say very impressive - that you've got decades of use out of sprockets. I bet chains don't fair so well! I agree that my chain shouldn't have disolved in under 5000 miles, but that's the reality. (I'm far from the only one, if that means anything?)
I couldn't afford to take Triumph up on the replacement bike offer, alas, otherwise I would have. I do love the Speedmaster and the happy owners far out-weigh the unhappy ones, like me. As for the gear box problems, have a read of Alex's post above. Shocking!

My chains did not too bad because of the lube I used but the sealed link chains faired a lot better. My 95 FLSTN is belt drive and I was considering converting it to chain....we will see. Take care Chris and keep the videos coming.
I had a 2005 Speedmaster, bought brand new. Two warped discs and paint falling off the footrest hangers. After 5 years the electrics started playing up e.g. alarm going off randomly, battery not charging. Spent a fortune on getting it sorted and sold it after 7 years ownership. Haven't bought another Triumph since

Thankyou Chris, I was considering a speedmaster but I had some reservations as there are some rumours of poor quality and lack of after market service. You have confirmed my suspicions. Luckily Indian have bought out a new Scout and that's where my money will most likely go.
Afternoon Gayle - glad you enjoyed the video. The poor service I recieved was from a bad dealer, Triumph in Hinkley, and the bike itself, have all been lovely.
I watched the Indian video when it was released: the Scout looks great. (If I were going to criticise, and I am, I'd love to have seen a 1200 Thunderstroke engine in it, not the 'Challanger style' unit.) But it's still lovely bike: I'd go for the Classic. It's gorgeous! (And, dispite the larger engine and steel frame, it's an ounce or two lighter than the old bike. Go figure...)

Bloody Hell! What a nightmare start. Must have been made on a Monday. I was watching this as I was considering buying one. From all I have heard, Triumph make reliable, quality bikes so it sounds like terrible luck.
Morning Yoyo - yes, a bit of a nightmare. (And you haven't seen my second 'evaluation' video!) But, as you note, Triumphs are generally good quality & reliability, it's just I've had bad luck - maybe a 'Friday afternoon bike' (not Monday...!), but I still love my Speedmaster.

I first saw a used 2018 Triumph Bobber [in Thailand] for a decent price on the local marketplace. It was in good condition with 48,000 km. My wife was against buying it because It was out of warranty and no way to actually know its condition. We decided to bite the bullet and buy a new 2024 Triumph Bobber Stealth Edition. Motorcycles are taxed heavily in Thailand. The final price was 647,000 baht ($18,500). I'm very satisfied with the Bobber except for the high gearing! At 4500 RPM in 5th gear, the motorcycle travels at 154 km/h! At 4500 RPM in 6th gear, the motorcycle travels at 171 km/h! I'll seldom use 5th gear and never use 6th gear on public roads. To make things worse, changing sprockets (Euro 5 models) triggers an ECU warning light and code. Remapping the ECU will technically void the warranty.

The Bobber Stealth is a great choice - though $18k is a hefty price tag. Still, I'm confident you'll enjoy it so it'll be well worth the outlay. As we've talked about the gearing before, I'll not labout the point (other than to say that I like the high gearing!), but I had no idea that changing the sproket would trigger a warning light. How on earth does it know?! I did understand that tuning the ECU would void the warranty - otherwise I would have done it! - but the dealer refused anyway. A bit of a shame all round.

Some bad luck there, but good to hear your thoughts.
I've had mine for about 2 years now and though I see many of the same cons (fuel tank/range, short travel suspension, gears/revs a little arduous) still, there is nothing else quite like it and I love it.
I came from classic bikes not cruisers, so perhaps that's one reason I don't feel some of your cons, because the Speedmaster isn't really a cruiser, to me. To me it's exactly what I wanted which is a modern classic look-and-feel, in a bobber style, with a sat-up riding position and slightly forward controls so my duff knee doesn't hurt. I don't think there is another bike like it for that mix of features.
I suppose there's up-coming Royal Enfield 650 bobber, but I tried the RE Super Meteor recently and, though a good bike, it did not put a grin on my face like the Speedmaster does. Wasn't as characterful or comfortable. Felt more 'modern' re. engine/gears/revs than the speedy does.
If Triumph do a new Speedmaster based on the 900 engine and with some suspension improvements I'd be very tempted but until then I'm more than happy.

Afternoon - I still love my 'troublesome' Speedmaster. A 'cruiser' was/is essential to me, and since Harley stopped the Sportster (so no new electronics), a Speedmaster was the best option.
I'm going to look at videos for the areas I don't like (cons), starting with the chain drive. (Mine lasted a whole 5000 miles. RUBBISH!) But, like a new tank it's very expensive so, maybe, just a dream for me. I've noticed, as I age (sigh) that my back hurts more and more easily: I too would like longer suspension! I'll do a video on that too, one day...
Not sure about the 900 engine though: what's the point? (It's bound to be more revvy, isn't it?)
How I miss the days when ridding didn't hurt!

@@chrisoftheot6272 I saw a bigger tank being made in Germany. 700 euros unpainted. Yikes. I'm sure the belt drive is not cheap either.
Re smaller engine I just would like better range and easier throttle control and don't need 1200 is all hehe. 600 would do fine.
As for pain, doing anything hurts these days, for me too! But, like you, I'm going to keep riding as long as I can.
My stepdad was my inspiration. He was unwell with COPD, but had his 82nd birthday with me at a European classic bike rally we'd ridden to from the UK on 1950s Ariels. He died a few months later.
You've got to keep doing what you love while you can!

Did they look good quality to you? I wondered whether they were hand-rolled (one an English wheel, or something) or if they have a tool to press the sections out. How did you get the gig to see them in the factory? That must have been quite interesting as they do all sorts of stuff. I assume you weren't persuaded to buy one...?

I adore the Bonnie SM--so far. Found a 2018 private party sale. Saved at least $3.5K USD. True electronic cruise is hilariously awesome. Thing sounds like a big ‘ol V8 Corvette. 1200 HT motor is wicked fun-pulls like a truck-I was full-hooligan splitting traffic for two full hours…it’s INFINITELY more comfortable than my HD Sporty. Kudos to John and Nick Bloor for reviving Brit manufacturing-this thing rocks hard!!

I just bought a 2023 Chrome edition Speedmaster. Too early to tell, but so far no problems. I think after witnessing your experience the Speedmaster, it appears to me that it's more of a dealer problem than it is a bike problem. Yes, the bike may have a problem, but a good dealership could nip it in the bud like right now so it doesn't snowball.
Afternoon Collosus - first, congrats on your purchase! The chrome bikes are really good lookers.
And you're right about the dealer 'problem': if they'd have taken the heads off right at the start (when they said they would), I'd have saved seven or eight months of hassle. Such is life!
But the bike has been fine since - phew!

Wow! I was considering the Speedmaster as my next bike in a month or so but no longer. Your experience with the bike is not something I want to sign up for. I love the looks of it - a proper iconic English gentleman’s cruiser (but made in Thailand). I already know the Triumph dealer that also handles BMW and Ducati motorcycles is about as snobby as they get and they are 3 hours away in an extremely busy city. I have a great relationship with my Honda dealer 7 minutes from my house and the salesman lives on my street. My previous Honda motorcycles 18 Goldwing and 17 Africa Twin had no issues whatsoever (I traded them for a minivan). Thought I would try something different this time but I’m going to get the new Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT with the electronic suspension instead. You just can’t go wrong with a Honda. Dealer location and reputation are big factors that you reminded me of with your video.
Afternoon Lance - I can only agree about the 'dealer location and reputation'. I had no idea how important that would be, not least because I assumed Dealer X were okay (and many have had very good experiences with them); but not me!
Honda are always going to be a great choice. In the 'old days' it was said in the computing world that 'no-one got fired for buying IBM'. Nowadays, no-one doubts a Honda. (I looked at the Rebel, but wow, it's ugly!)
Anyway, my Speedmaster has done a further 10,000 miles now and they've all been trouble-free: Bridge Motorcycles in Exeter are fab. Shame it's so far away...!

Goodness, glad I still have my Harley. Frequently consider a Triumph T120. The Harley is a joy but as I get older the weight (300 kilos) does get a bit much. However, the quality of modern Harley's and customer service is second to none in my opinion. I think I would of parted ways with any bike if I had all the trouble you have had. Still I hope you have no further issues.

I loved my Sportster so much, but the lack of electronics sealed it for me (and then Mr Zeitz killed it. I still feel the pain...) I'd love a nice Street Glide but, like you, the weight is just too much for me now. So, still wanting a cruiser, the Speedmaster is, pretty much, it. (And, it's a much better bike than my beloved Sportster.) And, interestingly, it's heavier too, but feels (much) lighter: go figure...
I'm sticking with the Speedmaster, so we'll see how it goes.

Oh Triumph are now built in Thailand too. Wasn't aware of that.
My 2022 Street Twin also had the gear position sensor go bad. Took two trips to the shop to get it fixed. Other than that though my Triumph experience has been good.

What a nightmare and well done for your perseverance. I recognise the area your riding and assume dealer X is in Taunton. I bought mine new 2020 for £11500 with painters heated grips etc so in one way pleased they are holding there value. My experience as I bought the bike from them is faultless. I’ve done 30,000 miles no problem nothing has needed changing apart from tyres.
I’ve had Friday afternoon cars before somehow put together and all goes wrong. Keep shiny side up and may see you at Total snack bar or in Exeter. 👍

I'm interested that you bought your bike from 'Dealer X'. My experience has been dreadful (obviously), but I asked a driver if they were a good company to work for and he said they were; he even said I should meet the boss! I figure that was as good a recomendation as could be gleaned. I'm glad they have looked after you - as they should. I wonder if the problem is 'middle management' as I seem to get on with the troops in the trenches (sales & service), and even the owners - the the ones 'in the middle'? Not so much...
Anyway, we'll have to have a chat at some point 'cos I'd love to compare notes. :-)

I bought a new T120 last year and within 260 miles the chain was rusty as hell .bike had never been wet or left outside.. Triumph didn't want to know..my first and last triumph..the chain on my Yamaha with 9000 miles on is still like new.

I just put a deposit down on the Chrome edition in France (thus avoiding dealer X!). My Triumph dealer also has the Harley concession! Nice people.

I think the Chrome Edition bikes are really nice, a good choice, I think. There's another chap here who 'recommended' legal action, but I can't see any good coming from that. If you've ordered a Chrome Edition Speedmaster, I'm sure you'll be chuffed to bits with it. My experience is, more or less, unique, from what I can see.
I got compensation from Triumph, and that's about as much as can be expected. As for my video 'doing them damage', so few people watch my videos that Triumph will never notice!

Sounds like more of a dealer problem… I bought a 2022 speedmaster new… and haven’t had any problems with it…but I do agree with you… the bike should come with a belt drive…and how about a dipstick for checking oil…I would really like a center stand as well “for chain maintenance”…. The suspension needs an upgrade as well.. for 2 up riding……

I've put a £250 deposit down on a new Speedmaster, my first Triumph. I was already having buyers remorse before I watched this as I'd planned to part ex either my Honda CB500x or my BMW F750 GS , both of which have been impeccable, as have the Honda and BMW dealerships. I really am thinking about cancelling now, as one thing I really don't need is unreliability and bad service.

Well, first, buyer’s remorse is one thing. If you’ve got real reservations, then it may be best to cancel your order. But I wonder if that would be rash based on my experience alone: there are dozens of other CZcamsrs with Speedmasters who love them, and who’ve had no trouble at all. I think I’ve been unlucky with mine, as do Triumph, which is why they offered me the 2-year warranty extension.
I’m curious as to why you were experiencing buyer’s remorse beforehand. Did another bike take your eye? (Please forgive me, but I’m not really a GS or a CB fan! ‘Adventure’ bikes just don’t do it for me…) But the Speedmaster is a very different style to that - why did you want to change to cruiser?
As for the dealerships, my experience is rather limited as I’ve only had regular contact with Harley-Davidson who, on the whole, have been very good. That said, Edinburgh were especially good, and Scott at Exeter is just excellent. Dealer X… I hope they’re an exception!

I decided to go with the Speedmaster despite my reservations, but am still waiting for it to be ready 2 weeks after it arrived at was dealership because they forgot to order the pillion back and rack. I'm really busy with work luckily so I'm in no rush, but imagine if I needed it for a trip or something. The reason I decided to go down the cruiser route is that aswell as loving the looks and the riding position of the Speedmaster (especially the beach handlebars), I finally persuaded my wife to come out with me as pillion. She enjoyed it, but felt she was too high up on the GS and indeed I'd be happier with 2 feet firmly planted on the ground with a more stable feel. She's always wanted me to get the traditional Bonnie 100/120, but having tried a 120, whilst it's a superb bike, it was exactly as I'd imagined it to be and didn't excite me and wasn't different enough to buy one. The speedmaster did however get me drooling a bit. Time will tell now whether it'll be a love affair that will just fizzle out when the novelty has worn off, but I think as long as it encourages the wife to come out on it on the weekend I'll keep it. I like to ride all year round, so I'll be keeping my GS for that, and for trips away etc as it's so practical. I just wish every dentist and accountant in christendom didn't have one, together with the aluminium boxes and grey pyjamas to go to the cafe on a Sunday.
I'll let you know how I get on once the dealership finally gets it's act together and I get it!

I can easily understand about ‘loving the looks’ of the Speedmaster as I fell for it as soon as I saw it (in 2018). Wonderful design & style! The beach bars just sealed it for me… shame I can’t run with them, but maybe I’ll get some custom risers sorted one day. (Hope so!) I quite understand about the ‘oh look, another one’ about the GS. The Speedmaster is just rare enough to be ‘exclusive’ - at least for me.
I do envy you that your dear lady wife agree to some pillion travel: Anna was never keen, and nowadays isn’t well enough for such frivolity. I’ve always dreamed of changing her mind with a Harley Glide, with a monster throne for the passenger, but that may be more ‘pipe’ than ‘dream’.
So I ride alone, and I love it. My Speedmaster was back in the dealership (again!!) this week so I had a Z900 (not the lovely RS) as a loan bike. OUCHY! So much pain from one bottom! When I returned it and got back on my Speedmaster; I was in seventh heaven! Oh, the joy of cruising down the M5 - it was also the hottest, sunniest day of the year. Awesome. (Made me appreciate the bike all over again.)
As for touring, I’d try and get a passenger seat sorted as the stock one is a bit small and harsh. I’ve no idea who does a bigger, better one, but it might be worth a look - to encourage your Anna to keep riding.
I trust the dealer will get things sorted soon - ‘cos you’re gonna love it Paul! Proper cruising on a proper cruiser just makes us happy, mate. Remember: enjoy the happy - that’s sound mental health advice, if ever there was any.

@@chrisoftheot6272 Thank you Chris that's reassuring. I've had it just over a week now and I must say it's a very slow burner for me, but I'm determined to like it! I haven't taken the wife out yet because I'm still getting used to the forward controls. I still find myself putting my feet straight down onto the exhaust after pulling off, and find the steep hill starts awkward with my right foot forward on the brake and my left leg trailing backwards....a potential hernia! Am I doing it wrong?
I plan to take it on a 100 mile plus day out this Saturday so that should give me a chance to gel with it finally. I hope Anna's health improves mate. Puts everything into perspective doesn't it.
I'll let you know how things progress!

I’m curious about dealer “X”. You seem to be around my area. The Triumph dealers I’ve used have been good, not Riders good but still above average. BMW near me was by far the worse experience I’ve ever had.
Afternoon Cornish - I've no BMW experience so I can't compare. Other dealers, Triumph or otherwise, have been MUCH better than Dealer X, but many others have been very happy with them. Riders are my favourite - or were until Harley withdrew their franchise.

I'm having a regular nightmare with my Speedmaster... and it continues!... but I am still happy with Triumph; and the Speedmaster is the best of them all ('cept maybe a Rocket, but that would need massive upgrades to work for me).
I assume you've picked your Bobber up now. I still remember getting on my Speedmaster and loving it so much: I'm confident it'll be the same for you.

@@chrisoftheot6272 hello Chris yes I pick the bobber up on Saturday, but I have to make a special gear shifter because I don’t have any movement in my left foot. Triumph doesn’t have any thing so I’ve come up with a great idea and it works great. The prototype is made from 22mm copper tube with a 22mm tee that pushes over the rubber selector peg 280mm of 22mm pipe then an elbow and a 22mm tee on top all soldered together. But I’ve ordered flat bar to make the one that will be on the bike. And the best thing is there’s no alterations whatsoever to the bike itself.
This bike WAS on my short list, not any more, will not take the chance. 👍🏻

I don’t understand why you don’t name and shame Dealer X ? These people need to seriously take responsibility . Wow I’m shocked at all the problems you’ve had Chris, I’ve had my 1200 speedmaster from new since 2018,and the only problem I’ve had was with the lumber support pad soaking up water after riding in the rain, I’m now coming up to 17,00 miles and still have the original chain and sprockets, I think you should have named and shamed dealer x, their treatment of you is appalling
Morning Paul - thanks for your sympathetic words. (It was a nightmare!) I didn't name Dealer X as I don't think it would have helped my cause, maybe it would have made getting Triumph support harder? I agree though, that Dealer X were 'appalling'.
I'm stunned that you've had 17,000 miles from your chain & sprokets: well done! (As I've said in another video, I hate them and MUCH prefer belts.) I'm on about 13,000 miles now, so this chain & sproket set has done about 8,000 miles without issue. BUT! It's Winter now (in Britain), so we'll see how they manage come March...

Sorry you've had so many issues. I've read different problems with these bikes. The radiator looks small for this size bike. I've heard these engines run on the hot side. Good luck in the future.

Gosh you poor man going through all that after spending over 12K my bugget is 10K and i am reserching bikes at the moment. Would u say this is better than a sporster ?? The bike looks lovely but if i had spent thst money and had those issues i Would of been gutted. Can i ask what other bikes you looked at when u were making your decision. Morning Paul - I looked at all the cruisers I could find, and my bugdet was £10k too. (I did a 'Next bike' video at the time.) The choice boiled down quickly to just Speedmaster and, yes, it far surpasses the lovely Sportster (except torque, which I do miss).

Pretty unusual. The Bonneville line has a good rep for reliability. Just like anything, you only really hear about something when there’s issues.

Heard form more guys complaining about the Triumph dealership and the quality of the bikes, being literally more in the workshop as on the road…
I was very close to sell my 2004 Sportster 1200 Custom, but all thrown on the table, I couldn’t find a replacement that fits the quality of the bike and the dealership of my Sportster.

When comparing my 2016 Sportster build quality with the Speedmaster, honestly, I don’t think there’s much difference. The Triumph may win ‘cos it has modern stuff - like LED lights & cruise control - but mostly it’s a tie, for me. (Maybe I just wish the Sportster had the electronics, if so, I’d have bought a reduce-rake “triple tree” and kept it. I did love it.)
Dealership quality is another matter. I can only imagine that my experience of terrible Triumph dealership is an anomaly - I certainly hope so! But I expect there are Harley riders who’ve had dreadful time of it with dealers too - certainly historically, there are lots of horror stories!
I only have Harley experience (generally very good) to compare Triumph to (mostly good, one utterly dreadful). One visit to the Indian dealer in Bridgend in Wales was also very good indeed.
In the end, build quality of an Evo Sportster compared to a Triumph Speedmaster ends in a win for Triumph (in my opinion). Dealerships? Not so much…

You were foolish to get rid of the Sportster. It has hydraulic valve adjustment and belt drive. All you have to do is change the fluids and filter. No expensive dealer servicing required. My Sportster is a 883. I have had my Sportster for 25 years and 400,000 miles on the original engine and 37 back tires and 17 front ones and 3 belts in 25 years. Most reliable and dependable transportation. Still riding her as my daily driver. When l bought my Honda l didn't care if it had a warranty because it was a Honda . I bought 3 of them brand new. My Sportster has outlasted all of my Honda's put together. Too much electronics waiting to have a expensive failure. Too much crap on today s motorcycles. Today's motorcycles are a collection of government regulations on 2 wheels. My Soviet built URAL side car outfit is 25 years old and all the Russian parts are still working. I have 35,000 miles on her. I have had my Triumph Tr-6 with a hard tail and magneto for 40 years. Split the cases to replace the camshafts and sludge trap. New parts ,put her back together and she is good for another 50 years. I would never have a new bike. I tolerate chain drive on my Triumph Tr-6 and my BSA C-15 250 singles in both street and dirt versions. My Sportster runs 200 * in Florida in the summer 🌞⛱️. All EFI bikes run hot 🔥🥵 as Hades and cooks your oil to ☠️. You should have kept your Sportster. What can I say?
I have heard that Triumph dealership support is patchy.
If I had that amount of trouble with a new bike, I would reject it.
You have got rights. Did you have legal cover with your bike insurance?

Morning Robert - I haven't owned or ridden a Yamaha for nearly 40 years; which was, then, a wonderful Fizzy (FS1DX, actually - brand new), a ratty but much loved RD250D, and finally an even more ratty XS250. Only the Fizzy worked flawlessly!
(For what it's worth, I sold the XS and didn't own a bike for 35 years. Heart was broken for the whole time!)
I don't think Hinkley Triumphs are unreliable, just mine for the first nine months or so!

Absolutely Robert. I understand the image and looks of the classic harleys and triumphs is great but you dont expect trouble mechanically and electrics well not good. Mind you ive had a honda vfr800 from 1999 year and its been through 2 honda regulator rectifier units by under 20000 miles. I fitted a mosfet one from electrex which cost over £100 in 2015 and its been great since. Maybe a secondhand cruiser like the Honda fury 1300 would be good as its shaft drive also and honda really are great motors. Do your research and choose a model thats got a great reputation like suzuki v strom. The new 800 seems really well built and designed and would be a bike you can just ride and get serviced with oil, filters, occasional brake pads and new chain and sprockets and tyres every 10000 miles or so. Im an ex despatch rider so ive ridden some dogs of bikes and kept them going often on a shoestring. Thats why ki go for simplicity with no gizmo rider aids. We were bought up on the old british and jap bikes like Gs suzuki 4s, bsa A10 and xs650 and XT500. I really liked them especially the old GS850 shaft drive. An absolute tank, but very comfortable and reliable even with over 80000 miles on the clock thats why i rate v strom as you just know it wont break down unless you forget to put in oil.
It sounds like you have had no luck whatsoever with your Triumph. I don’t recall other owners having these problems and Triumph are normally reliable and well built. Do you know whether these problems are common to the Speedmaster?
Morning Neil - no, as far as I can tell, no other Speedmaster owners have had these problems. Several have had gear box issues with one of the triples, I forget which one, but the Bonnies are generally A1.

Hi Chris I sincerely hope you’re troubles are over. I have owned a T100 which I bought new in 2013, I have never had a problem with it but since the Speedmaster came out I have wanted one.
A japanese cruiser like a honda would be best for you as for a daily rider a british or american bike or even BMW or italian bikes always need to be fettled and if you struggle wrenching you will get problems. I much prefer the older, simpler bikes without electronic aids.

You are right. I have a Honda Rebel 1100 and it has reliability and all the modern electronics. I did have the dreaded stator leak, which was fixed on warranty, other than that, very reliable. I do prefer the Triumph designs however!
Great bike, but (a) bangs hard over the bumps like it has no shocks at all, (b) more subject to wind sway than larger bikes on the highway, and (c) really is an intermediate bike...not best for larger riders. Else, great bike, well made, runs well, excellent part fit and finish. Would buy again? Yes.
Afternoon James - yip, I'd be happy to buy again, despite all the problems I've had (but not from Dealer X...). I agree with the suspension critique - it's not good enough - but the 'wind sway' has never effected me. Perhaps because I weigh the same as my bike? A mystery. Also, I'm wouldn't call it 'intermediate' in any way, although I did find the standard footrest position too close to me, so 'larger riders' - possibly, me - need to take that into consideration.

Hi Chris, I think you've been extremely unlucky with your bike. Your dealership experiences are shocking to say the least. Good on you for sticking with the bike (and the brand) others would have cut their losses.
Morning Craig - well, I can't say I wasn't VERY tempted to 'cut my losses', as I mentioned. But, in the end, the bike is a great platform and, as you say, I've just been unlucky with it.
Dealer X is another matter though: for me? Dreadful. But I was curious about other people's opinion, so I 'casually' asked a lowly employee van driver. He said the boss was a good guy and that the staff even got a Christmas bonus last year! He asked whether I had meet the boss, suggesting again that he's a good sort.
I wonder if it's the 'middle management' that are dreadful as the worst experiences I've had come after someone says, "I'll check with my boss..."

One the whole, Triumph are fine - no worse than the others, and better than several. I'm don't regret buying Triumph even with the problems (which continue - another video soon!). I am happy that Bridge Motorcycles are supporting me 'properly' and that Hinkley customer support is solid.

You had a shitty response from triumph I had the same reaction to my 900 thunder bird a few years back I was told by manager of Birmingham branch that he didn’t get where he was today by refunding money for parts they wrongly ordered fuck triumph gone back to sportster
Morning Michael - sorry, I seem to have missed your post. (I'm not getting the CZcams alerts I used to - don't know why.)
Your experience is worse than mine, in that you spoke to the manager and he was dreadful. It really emphasises how important a good dealer is 'cos the experience of a great bike can be ruined by a terrible dealer. (Not to mention, it can cost a fortune.)
If you find a good dealer in Brimingham, stick with them!

Chris, in the video you state that you were considering cutting your losses and buying another brand of bike - yet you did not take Triumph's offer to trade in on another Speedmaster. Why the inconsistency?
You have been unlucky with the oil leaks, doubly unlucky with an appaling dealer "X", whom you should name and shame immediately. Was it Total Triumph?
And trebly unlucky that the mechanics at dealer X did not reassemble the engine 100%. I think that all the subsequent reliability problems stem from replacing the engine cases.
I agree that the engine cases tarnish more quickly that desirable and the engine chucks out a lot of heat. My legs got very hot through thin riding jeans yesterday. However, to be fair to Triumph. my Yamaha MT-09 was even worse.
Had a flat battery yesterday morning when trying to start the bike. Charging the bike up after letting it stand for a couple of weeks is essential in my experience.
My local Triumph dealers seem to be very good.

The reason I didn't trade in was because of the 'contribution' that was required: I can't afford to 'contribute' any more!
Interesting you think the engine case swap is the cause of subsequent problems: why is that? (It did, at least, stop the initial leaking.)
As for 'naming and shaming' a dealer: I think that would be pointless as I'd gain nothing, and ultimately detrimental. I shall just avoid them - which, I think, they are quite happy about.
The bike is back to Exeter (Bridge Motorcycles) on Thursday for, guess what? Oil loss...

Nope. Keeping the road king
There is no heritage with Triumph bikes. The old Triumph went bust and ceased to exist. The modern Hinkley Triumphs owe absolutely nothing to the original Meriden ones. Today's Triumphs are modern bikes with the old Triumph badge on them.
Well, there's heritage enough for me - his mighty wonderfulness, John Bloor bought the company. His less mighty but wonderful also, Les Harris built and sold Bonnevilles from his shed. Then Bloor-the-Wonderful moved the factory a hundred yards down the road.
So, 1889: Coventry; 1903: Nuremberg; 1942: Meriden; 1985: Devon; 1988: Hinkley. That's heritage.

This is so sad. I was going to get a Speedmaster, now I will definitely not. This poor build quality and after sales service is what did for the company back in the day. Seems they are making the same mistake again. Real shame as I would prefer a Triumph to a Harley.
Morning F (and F) - I've had many such responces to these (two) videos. I would only repeat that I have had an 'atypical' experience as far as the bike is concerned. (The verdict was that a piston ring was not seated correctly leaving one piston 'very black'.)
I would not say there is any 'build quality' problems with Triumph, I have just been unlucky. As for 'after sales service', I think I will hate Dealer X for the rest of my life! But, again, many others are perfectly happy with them. I now use Bridge in Exeter and the the parts & service gent (Scot) is superb.
Triumph v. Harley? Too close to call, surely?!

You seem to have got a lemon, it can happen, but why don’t you just ditch your Triumph and go back to a Harley, which you keep going on and on and on.
Afternoon John - yes, I do love Harley (especially my old XL1200CA). But, after I came off the Sportster, I figured traction control would have saved me, had it been available. The only 'appropriate' bike (see my video) that I could afford, was the Speedmaster.
It is a bit of a lemon, but I hope it'll work out okay!

Well, if you see my 'Next bike' video, you'll see the Norton is out of the question, and the Indian (Scout) was a near-miss. I do like Indians (not the Challenger), but the big ones are too heavy, and the Scout doesn't have the electronics.

I bought a Speedmaster in 2020 and since then i never had any problem, seems you ended up with what we call a "lemon", a bad one out of the bunch (i am sorry for you). And definitively your dealership sucks.

He got a lemon, bad luck and it does happen, there are 1000's of very satisfied Triumph owners who own modern iterations.
Based on your answer you should never buy any bike. There's no bike manufacturer out there that has a 100 percent record. And of the millions of bonneville out there, how many videos like this can you find ? ... If you're going to make a comment make one that is sensible.

@aarsenalfan .. I've bought 4 Harleys in the last 8 years, so don't tell me you're worried about your wallet... Maybe not money spent on repairs but the upfront cost of ownership and then the maintenance costs and let's not forget premium gas in almost every single model... so one way or another, you're wallet is feeling it . 2 wheels down my friend..
