Steaming to Legacy is a unique retrospective fan documentary that tells the story of the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry, and his beloved children’s book series about the Fat Controller’s really useful engines, which eventually become a phenomenal franchise for over seventy years.
Featuring the voice of Enterprisingengine93, along with archival footage, pictures and interview audios from behind the scenes. Also featuring Sudrian Steam’s significant suite of the Island of Sodor throughout the second half of the third chapter.
The story continues after the initial broadcast on Children’s ITV, Britt Allcroft’s Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends became a raving success with two BAFTA nominations between 1985 and 1987 and spawns huge merchandising ever since.
With Wilbert stepping out of his semi-retirement from writing any Railway Series material with ‘Thomas’ Christmas Party’, he went on to rewrite two of his stories as well as two annual books in 1979 and 1980 and contributes to write several chapters of The Birmingham and Gloucester Railway for P.J. Long.
In 1987, Wilbert teamed up with his younger brother George Awdry to write an encyclopaedia book of the Island of Sodor that went out of stock and harder to find since it’s publication. Here we can learn more about the fictional island itself and it’s history.

If I ever went to Sodor, I would spend time on Thomas's branch line and conducting interviews with as many engines as I could get.
Same here
Same, Isle of Sodor is definitely got the cottage core if you think about it.
I think I'd be fine traveling on Thomas' Branch Line for my vacation.
If I would travel to Sodor, I would like to visit the Little Western because of its lovely seaside towns or Thomas' Branch Line because of the beautiful places along the way.
My holiday on Sodor would probably be to Arlesburgh. Nothing quite like sitting next to the sea, hearing the puffing of Great Western engines and "'a wee engines".
I would go to tidmouth sheds and meet Thomas, Percy, James, Gordon, Henry, and Edward.
Where's toby
I would like to visit the North Western Railway and see how wonderful the lines really are. Riding on Thomas's train and maybe the Express would be an experience for me :).
I started showing these to my 67 year old dad as he was the one who got me into Thomas & Friends back when I was about 4 years old, and he really enjoys them and keeps asking if the next part is uploaded yet. These are so detailed and so well made that It makes it so easy for me to share the history of one of my favorite franchises. And the story behind how Thomas & Friends was created is one of my favorites. Thank you so much for taking the time to put so much love and devotion into these. Dad and I will be eagerly waiting for the next installment in this series.
ThePinkController Thank you for showing your appreciation to the project ~ and further chapters will hopefully be done during the year. Fingers crossed...
Can't wait. :)
These documentaries are fantastic. Thomas was a massive part of my childhood and I even like watching the old episodes now. If I could visit Sodor, I would love to go on the Ffarquar branch line.
I would go to... Skarloey railway and hunt down some missing engines like smudger.
Thomasfan 1945 if you were to go find smudger you would have to go to the miniature railway
Simon laffy oh ya, I forgot the Old narrow gauge railway was made into the miniature railway, Dammit. I forgot. Well after I could go to the miniature railway. Money wasted.
Plush Mario and Luigi well a generator that is dead, smudger was buried In a landslide and can literally Never move again. What if there was a engine that was beside dukes shed and while duke was found the other engine was not
Me too. I would like to meet Duncan(My favorite character of the Narrow Gauge engines)
Cameron Ireland Thanks!
I absolutely adore the intro, use it a lot more often. I like the way this movie is going.
Sudrian Steam had done an outstanding job on the soundtrack, including the intro piece. :)
can I just E93 voice is just 😳👌
I would start a conversation on the fact Thomas and his friends have toys
My parents recorded these original airings of Thomas the Tank Engine and friends, compiling them into a VHS of the first season and another for Season 2. These videotapes also included episodes from other shows, like She-Ra.
I think I'd love going to Henry's Forest. I can never get enough of nature, and that's coming from someone who lives in a temperate rainforest
Either there, or the Little Western. Used to live on an oceanside back in the day
Stunning. Absolutely stunning. I can't wait to see what chapter 4 holds.
As for where I'd go on holiday, I'd do Glennock. It's such a beautiful place.
After this, I feel now Thomas has such an extensively established, highly detailed universe that I can't compare it to any other children's series. It's pretty remarkable.
All the areas on Duck's Branch Line would be beautiful places to visit, especially Tidmouth Hault.
Loved the use of _Thunderbirds_ music like the 'Ned Cook Show theme' from "Terror in New York City" for BAFTA Awards segments.
5:38 to 6:29 Great bit there showcasing the expertly-done leitmotifs Mr. O'Donnell and Mr. Campbell assigned to each of the (main) engines. The leitmotif has to be one of the most clever creative ideas in artist-dom in my opinion. Done right it can create a whole world of music can enrich the world of the narrative. Shame there's been no OST release yet.
That said, My music-loving-Top Hat's off to the like of MKtheinstrumentalist, Toby's Windmill, The Tuggster Intensifies, Sudrian Afro, Oliver11GWR, and Rexeljet for recreating the themes as best they can/splicing instrumentals where possible/finding the dubbing tracks. (if I'm forgeting anyone someone please tell me. Thank you.) Thanks to all of you.
I'd definitely love to take a visit to Edward's Branch, and the Mainline of course.
Happy Anniversary of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends.
3:32 what the hell is that?!
6:04 those are some nice promos!
10:16 This image was used on the Take Along card of Douglas!
12:33 Never heard of that before either!
If i were to visit Sodor, i'd start filming around Vicarstown after coming on a train from Barrow, after coming off a Northern service. I'd then head up to Skarloey, then to Ffarquar, and basically tour the Island's railways!
If I ever travelled there, I'd like to take the Little Western for a seaside holiday. Maybe taking a ride on Thomas' branch line too.
18:14 - I am VERY impressed with that map... but the Sodor logo in the corner looks a bit.... a bit like....
You know damn well what it looks like, it's got the same colours and everything. XD
MKtheinstrumentalist hail sodor!
You just had to say the d word 😕
How about we call it mini soda
Loved this part.
Thank you for your appreciation my friend. Which part of the third chapter do you like the most and why? Daniel
I'd love to explore the whole island in 6 days
This is one of the most gracious CZcams Christmas present I've ever received. Thank You very much SmurfyDan.
Whilst I would take time to visit some of the other railways, I would be staying on the west coast on Duck's branchline
If I travel to Sodor, I would go to Thomas's Branchline, for my holiday with Thomas, Edward, Percy, and Toby. A job well done once again, and Marry Christmas Daniel!
If i were to got to Sodor, I would go everywhere for a Holiday on a long train trip on Thomas
I love the intro
Lovely music; should definitely be considered for a theatrical Thomas movie. ;)
As for a holiday spot on Sodor? Dang, that's a hard one. It'll pretty much either be a toss-up between the smaller railways (ie, Skarloey, Culdee Fell, and Arlesdale Railways) and the Branch Lines of Kirk Ronan and Norramby: the smaller railways because I've always had a fascination of small engines ever since they were introduced in Season 4 of the TV and when I first discovered the Small and Mountain Railways in 1997 (that was when I discovered the RWS Books after the Reverend's death, unfortunately), and the Kirk Ronan and Norramby branches because those (along with Peel Godred) are pretty much unexplored territory in the TV series universe (good potential for story ideas ;) ).
GeebMachine If you love the music by Sudrian Steam, you can check out the soundtrack used in this chapter on his channel for your listening pleasure.
Okey-dokey. I will then. :)
Peel Godred, The Skarloey Railway, and the Arlesdale Railway sounds like good travel destinations (and maybe the Norramby and Kirk Ronan Branch lines, just to see what’s there)
If I were to travel to Sodor, I would go to Suddery for a holiday and wonderful work Dan! :)
If I went to sodor I would try to find some abandoned special stuff like the time Thomas found great waterton and Peter Sam finding the statue of prodius and Toby finding a steam tramworks sign
If I were to travel to Sodor, I would go to Arlesburgh for a holiday.
And good work, so far. Keep it up! :)
Jonathan Asismah if I visted sodor I would just come to see the engines in action
Jonathan Asiamah what up
Jonathan Asiamah kjhhgugh
Jonathan Asiamah yrggggggyyjjbveqqwwreerrrrrrrrrrrrt ttttytyyyyuuuuuuuuuiiiiiiioooooooook0pddd
I would love to go there and see some of my favorite train
I Would go to the Mainline and see James and ride on Gordon's Express
@13:38 That moment when I look at the drivers face and realise that I've fired to that man, on his own engine, which was and still is masquerading as Thomas the Tank Engine. Mind Blown haha
I would personally go to the Skarloey Railway because I remember when I was young growing up watching episodes of this and thinking to myself "I want to go there someday!"
I'm amazed at the fact that the original airing of the very first episode began with an introduction by a creepy robot. No hard feelings to whoever created the puppet.
My dream Sodor vacation spot would likely be one of the small towns, perhaps Tidmuth. We see so much of what the railroads are like, but almost never enough of what the average Sudrian experiences on an everyday basis. I'd like to play amateur anthropologist for a little while and explore the Sudrian grocery stores, booksellers, banks, etc. It drives me nuts sometimes just thinking of what these people read (besides TRS, of course)!
I would go to Knapford Station as well as the engine sheds and I would spend all my time talking to the engines. I would tell them what I know about each one as well as listen to their stories and what life is like on the island of Sodor. I would also tell them how much each of them mean to me and that I love them very much!
I would go on Thomas’s branchline and see Thomas up close in person.
6:10 can’t even get the break coach right in a picture
1:30 That’s Sergeant Major Zero the Zeroid from Gerry Anderson’s 1980’s puppet series Terrahawks. Fun Fact: The main cast from Terrahawks would announce that Thomas would be coming up next on Children’s ITV!
If I was to go to Sodor for a holiday, I would take the express from Barrow-In-Furness to Crovan’s Gate to see the Skarloey Railway, take the express from Crovan’s Gate to Tidmouth then go on Thomas’ Branch Line from Knapford to Ffarquhar
I would like to go on Thomas's branchline and see him and Bertie race.
This show is my childhood.
For a holiday I would go all over Sodor!
I'd visit Rheneas, the fishing villiage, Vicarstown, and Tidmouth.
The Little Western is my idea of a vacation on Sodor.
I would go to Tidmouth, Knapford or Arlesburgh. Maybe even the fishing village.
2:39 Cheeky Thomas The Tank Engine. X
i would go see the seaside to relax beside the ocean:)
I would go to Arlesburgh and Harwick for a holiday, If I were to travel to Sodor.
I would go to either Wellsworth, Ffarquhar or Kirk Ronan. Purely because the railway is so integral to those towns
4:22 about that part. I think the style of the engines models were actually made to look like Reginald Payne and C.Reginald Dalby's versions in the book. Except for Annie and Clarabel, Duck, Daisy and Boco.
You're amazing
Love it
I'd go to Knapford because of the main station and how busy it is.
The ertil toys were one of the things that truely excited me as a child, same with the wooden toys
3:44 I collect those Ertl trains
If I were to go on holiday to the Island of Sodor, I would like to spend the week in a hotel at Tidmouth. Then on Monday, I would like to travel on Thomas, along his branch line, in Annie and Clarabel. And then on Tuesday, I would like to travel on Gordon’s Express, along the main line to Wellsworth, and change there to travel on Edward along his branch line to Brendham Docks. On Wednesday, I would like to travel along the main line with James, to Crovan’s Gate, to travel along the Skarloey Railway. On Thursday, I would like to travel to Kirk Machan, to travel along the Culdee Fell Mountain Railway. On Friday, I would like to travel along Duck’s branch line, on either Duck himself with Alice and Mirabel or Oliver with Isabel and Dulcie, to Arlesburgh West, to travel along the Arlesdale Railway. On Saturday, I would like to have a day of rest. And on Sunday, I would like to go back home to the Mainland!
I would probably go to Thomas's branchline to begin it, The Culdee Fell railway for a hike, The Skarloey Railway to see the beauty of lakside, Ducks Branch line to see the beach & Edward's Branch Line to end it.
I would go to culdee fell to climb the mountains and see the whole island of sodor and write a mystery book about it's secrets like gravity falls.
I would probably take a vacation through the whole island itself
If I went to Sodor I would check out the culdeefell mountain railway
and it was Sergeant Major Zero from Terrahawks who introduced us to Thomas and Friends
I would love to go to Sodor if it were real. I would love to meet my heroes.
Easy question, easy answer, to Thomas' branch line.
Tell me your going to do more i love these facts honestly
I live in Cumbria and I did see the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. There is also The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway.
If i ever went to sodor i'd want to take a ride on the Miniature engines at arsdale cause they remind me of a thomas attraction called the train shed which feature mini versions of the main characters but it sadly closed down in 2014
R.I.P
Train shed
1996-2014
I would love to visit the Skarloey Railway or perhaps Edward’s branch line
I would like to go to the North Western Railway!
I think i would have a vacation on culdee fell railway.
Oh me too
In the 80’s Thomas wasn’t the first cartoon to air there was transformers,Godzilla,Mario, and more
8:52 that’s where the muppet Christmas carol and muppet treasure island was also filmed
I honestly thought the minature guage engines we're just thought of in 2017 or 2016 , but now I realize that a lot of characters go WAY back to the late 40's, to early mid 1960's.
I'd go to the Little Western branch line. A bunch of my favorite characters are there (Duck, Oliver, Toad, S.C.Ruffey, the Scottish Twins, the Small Railway Engines).
I'd like to go to... the docks. Alright! Victorstown.
My Holiday is on Thomas's branchline I really really want to see the tank engine himself
let us hope jock and the mountain railway get introduced in the TV series
22:32 - “Stanley?” I thought his name was Smudger.
gameoholic1994 ttte.fandom.com/wiki/Stanley_(narrow_gauge)
I would love to go go on the express from KNAPFORD to vicerstown and back again
Oooh i love the themes of ttte
From 1986-1993 Kaleidoscope and The Video Collection released 3 videos featuring the complete first series
3:30 wow thanks paul
I would want to go to on Edward's branch line because it has amazing scenery and the vicars orchard.
I'd like to go to either Knapford Station or Ulfstead Castle.
I think I'd go to the Skarloey Railway, Arlesdale Railway and the Culdee Fell Mountain Railway and if I were to live there, I'd live in a village near Cros-Ny-Cuirn
I’d visit the Harwick Tramway’s remains via, Peter Sam
If I were to travel to Sodor I would go to Edwards branch line!
Where did you get the footage of Thomas first airing at 1:22?
Most likely on the harwick branch (near it not on it lol) mostly cuz the beach is right next to where I'll be staying
10:10, okay so by looking at this image, Thomas's special coach is just one of the express coaches.....
If I were to go on holiday on Sodor, I would go on as many lines as possible. I would "main"ly (I know bad pun) go on the main line
snowdon
snowdin
thomas and undertale fanfiction incoming
The old mid sodor line is what I want to see
Thomas loves ruining pictures with his wonky eyes
I worked on the Dean Forest Railway and I fired Wilbert a couple of times
