Steaming to Legacy is a unique retrospective fan documentary that tells the story of the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry, and his beloved children’s book series about the Fat Controller’s really useful engines, which eventually become a phenomenal franchise for over seventy years.
Featuring the voice of Enterprisingengine93, along with archival footage, pictures and interview audios from behind the scenes.
Following the success of the first two television series of Thomas, Britt Allcroft decided to carry out her plans to introduce the little blue engine to North American audience, by teaming up with Rick Siggelkow to create a live-action show on PBS called ‘Shining Time Station’ and the rest was television history…
This chapter also features the start of Thomas’ presence in Japan and the origins of a short lived similarly produced show about two anamorphic tugboat fleets devised by David Mitton and Robert D. Cardona.

Hell yes.
My memory of TUGS? Never knew about it until 2008 when I joined CZcams. Saw how popular and highly praised it was by the Thomas fandom, decided to watch an episode at random to see it for myself (Trapped), and freaking loved it. Dove straight into reading all the BTS snippets afterwards and gained even more respect for Mitton and the Clearwater crew.
I've watched the episodes so many times that they've kinda lost their replay value on me now (I've watched every episode at least 10 times each now) but I still love peeking into any latest TUGS news swarming around. Can defo say I'll be watching this a few more times :)
Great chapter! Loved the side bit with Tugs. My earliest memory of Thomas was watching the Thomas Gets Tricked VHS featuring the first seven episodes. Shining Time Station I didn't have any knowledge about until I read the book adaptations of Thomas and the Magic Railroad. Tugs I saw during my Summer visits to England. The first episode I watched from that series was High Tide.
My earlist memory of Thomas was seeing the show on VHS which contained all 26 episodes of the first season.

A very informative video I'm happy to have taken part of it. As for the question my earliest memory of Thomas would be as far as back as a baby watching 'The Sad Story of Henry' on TV, for Shining Time Station, I knew of the show's existence thanks to Totally Thomas at the time when the internet was in its infancy but I never grew up with until I bought 'Becky Makes a Wish' off eBay in 2006. For TUGS, at the time I was watching Theodore Tugboat when Disney Channel were making their Australian debut on cable TV in 2001 and was watching that and I was looking for VHS tapes of it. I then spotted TUGS at a video rental store known as Video Ezy. At first I didn't bother with it until I decided to get it, which was Sunshine/Pirate. After watching it I was hooked and that would be around 2002.

My earliest memories of Thomas was watching Series 2 mostly as I had all 3 Screen Legends videos. I always got frightened at Diesel's shunting scene from 'Pop Goes the Diesel'. But I do remember owning a tape of the first 8 episodes of Series 1 on video. I used to see these episodes the most. I also remember watching some Series 3 episodes that were recorded from CITV as it was always shown after 'The Raggy Dolls'. I know the end credits were always shorten and we never saw the end credits fully.
My earliest memories of 'TUGS' was when my brother bought the first video, I however bought the first video of 'The Wombles'. But I took a liking to 'TUGS' and collected the rest of the tapes. I always liked watching 'Trapped', 'High Tide' and 'Jinxed' the most.
I don't have any early memories of 'Shining Time Station' apart from downloading the first episode and then seeing more of them on CZcams.
would watch Thomas and tugs on my vhs cassettes religiously basically everyday, and I used to live in Portsmouth and would name all the navy dockyard tugs after ones from the series lol I'm now 26 and still like to watch Thomas and tugs when I get chance on here, big kids never grow up
My first exposure to Thomas was simple. Basically I have this big book of all 26 of Wilberts railway series books. It used to be my brother's but it was given to me. I was shown all the classic seasons as we have a few VHS tapes of Thomas, and I learnt to appreciate the classic seasons. I was born at the start of the HIT era (2004) and I never really payed attention to that, just the good stuff.
My history with Thomas (as well as STS) was pretty simple. It was 1994. I was two years old. I saw this show on PBS. I was hooked. I wasn't sure what it was that attracted me to it, but nonetheless I loved this show, as I still do today.
TUGS was a different story. Being American, we never had TUGS here (aside from stuff like Theodore Tugboat and Salty's Lighthouse, both of which I watched as a lad). I do remember seeing these tugboat characters on the latter that reminded me of TTTE, and admittingly that was the only part of the show I cared about in hindsight. Then in 2008, I found CZcams, and in addition to finding Thomas videos, there was another (more obscure) show about these tugboats in this place called Big City Port. In my mind, I thought: "So you mean to tell me that those tugboats that looked like they could be TTTE characters, in that cartoon I saw years ago, were actually part of a show from the people who worked on Thomas?! WHAT?!!!"
Pretty long story, I know, but yeah. I was shocked to find that out! :P
My earliest memory of Thomas was in 2008. I was 3 years old at that time and it came on Playhouse Disney( in Asia, it aired on Playhouse Disney) . It was season 11 or 12 and it on the beginning at the island of Sodor part. I say 11 or 12 because I also remembered the ending of the roll call, which was Thomas going backwards to Tidmouth sheds , which is only from season 11 or 12. As for Shining time station of TUGS, I never saw it or tv.
Such a great documentary, so large and goes through every little bit of detail. It certainly puts all other documentaries to shame... at last in my opinion.
My earliest moment of Thomas was on Shining Time Station itself; according to my parents, while my mom was out, my dad placed me on the coach and turned the TV on so that I could be "out of his hair" while he did some housework (I think I was like 3 at the time :/). And since PBS was the last channel they watched, I was left to watch the kids' programming, and among these were Barney & Friends, Sesame Street, Mister Rodgers' Neighborhood, Reading Rainbow, Kino's Storytime, and, of course, Shining Time Station. Of those shows, I was instantly hooked to STS, especially when the Thomas & Friends stories came on (can't remember which story was the first one I saw, but the earliest one I can remember was "Gordon & the Famous Visitor").
As for TUGS, I had no knowledge of it, except for its predecessors Theodore Tugboat and Salty's Lighthouse during the mid-to-late 90's; I didn't find out about it until I joined SiF in 2005, and heard only the audio of "High Tide" on a fansite (can't remember the name of it). Up until that point, "High Tide" was the only episode I knew, because none of the episodes were uploaded to CZcams. And when they were some years later, the first episode I fully saw was "Jinxed", in addition to "High Tide" (both of them are my favorites!) and "Munitions".
My earliest memory of Thomas has to be the fist time i saw the magic railroad my mom got it for me on vhs because she knew i loved Thomas so much that she knew i would really like the movie and ever sins 2002 Thomas and the magic railroad has bin one of my favorite movies of all time and i still love it to this day!
A very well made documentary. I've been watching this series since the first chapter and I'm really enjoying it :). As for the question, well I can't really remember the first time I saw Thomas but my earliest memory was watching a VHS which had 'Percy Runs Away' as the first episode. My older brother was into Thomas at the time and we had lots of Tomy trains which I still have today. As for Tugs, I do remember watching that for the first time. I was introduced to it by my Dad who said it was a series made by the same people who Thomas so naturally, I wanted to see it. Since then, I became a fan of it. :)

My dad is from Japan, and he was the one who introduced me to the popularity of Thomas in Japan via a Japanese store outside of New York City in the late 90's, as well as the amazing merchandise.
My earliest memory of Thomas, as far as I recall, was watching the VHS Thomas Helps Out, and the first episode on that being Edward Helps Out. So, I heard George Carlin before Ringo Starr. And it all snowballed from there...
It wasn't until years later that I noticed there might have been subtle dialogue changes like the ones at 10:45. I never knew Sir Topham Hatt was nicknamed "The Fat Controller" until I read the Thomas Complete Collection. That he was casually insulted during almost every one of his early appearances in the books was both surprising and strangely endearing to me, and fed greatly into my perception that most of Sodor's engines must be locked into a permanent version of the "terrible twos." That even Wilbert got into the act, calling himself "The Thin Clergyman" was a hoot for me!
This goes to show how well-presented this documentary is! Brings a tear to my eye. Keep up the good work! :)
My earliest memory is seeing shining time station season 2. And out of all the Thomas the tank engine narrators George carlin, Ringo Starr, and Alec Baldwin were always my favorite Thomas the Tank Engine narrators
This is definitely my favorite part as it talks about tugs which is hands down my favorite TV show of all time. My earliest Thomas memory is watching a DVD with Jack owns up and Percy's scary take with 3 songs. For tugs it was over 1years ago when I found it after being recommend by my best friend edwardnumbertwo to watch it as its really good. I fell in love instantly and ended up buying the ertl models
My early memories was everything about Thomas. Since I'm British, Thomas is very popular.
I can't say my first memory of STS, I was watching that show before I could remember. However I never heard of Tugs until I was 19, when I joined SiF. While I understand that NBC did air Tugs in 1989, I was born in 1990 so I have no memories of that. I think most of us on this side of the pond watched the Canadian series, "Theodore Tugboat" instead.
One of the only CZcams series to make me cry. This makes me a proud Thomas That Tank Engine And Friends fan!
You'll have to forgive me for watching the TUGS portion before everything else, but it's an incredible breakthrough in the search for behind the scenes content and I can't thank you enough for uncovering it! This is the first time ever we've had actual behind the scenes FOOTAGE, not just photographs! Watching footage truly is a different experience! To see the crew actually working with the models, to see the sets and models from different angles that show you they really are models, to see them out of water, to actually SEE the trolleys we've known about for years but have never had a single picture of! Absolutely incredible! I've quite literally had dreams where a documentary of this nature with this type of content was released, but never in my wildest, well, dreams, did I think it would actually happen! You've made my week, easy! Again, thank you so much, these findings are a credit to TUGS fans everywhere!
I have a very weird first memory of Thomas, but this is worth a read. Okay, so I was 3 or 4 years old at the time, and for some odd reason a Thomas VHS was playing on the TV, but no one was in the room at the time, so I just assumed it was my brother that was watching it and had gone into the other room to do something else. I didn't really pay much attention to it until one certain scene caught my eye. The episode the VHS was on was Gordon & The Famous Visitor, and the scene that caught my attention was when Gordon was attempting to go over the viaduct but his dome blows off and lands in the river below. I got really excited by this, so I kept rewinding the part with Gordon's boiler landing in the water over and over and over again, and didn't even get tired of doing so, and thus, a new Thomas fan climbed on board! It's really strange how such a little thing got me into this show, and how far the show has come since I became a fan of it. Like seriously, if I hadn't of gone into the room at the time of that episode playing, I really don't know if I would've got into the show or not. But hey, it did happen, and I'm still loving it to this exact day! As for the documentary Dan, holy moly that was great! The behind the scenes of TUGS was just extraordinary! I never thought I'd see the day! :'D

SmurfyDan Why have a British man narrate for American audiences and why not mention the difference George Carlin made to the show besides Ringo Starr?
I never saw shining time Station, my earliest memory of TTTE was when I was about two watching Thomas and Gordon. I saw Tugs when I was about ten and thought it creepy. But when I came around to it a few years later, I liked it!
Earliest memories of Thomas and Shining Time are one and the same: sometime in 1991, Ringo Starr was Mr. Conductor, and one of the featured stories was "The Sad Story of Henry." The sequence of Henry being bricked up in the tunnel was a visual earworm for years afterward for me, and I didn't understand where it came from until I finally read the story in the Complete Collection. As for Tugs, I never watched the show in its original incarnation until today, and I certainly wouldn't have known it was connected to Thomas (a random wiki walk years later clued me in to that, and boy was I surprised!). In 1999, I watched stories from the show as part of "Salty's Lighthouse," part of the Ready Set Learn early morning block on The Learning Channel (although by then, there was already much less learning than ever before going on there). Salty was a show I just had to watch every morning, even though I was well outside the program's intended age group. That, and Skinamarink TV soon after, were a top reason why TLC was the most watched channel in my family's house for a long time. (The other reason, of course, was the American version of Trading Spaces. Many trips to the Home Depot were never the same afterward!)

My earliest memory was when I think I was 6-7 and my mom kept renting Thomas VHS tapes from our local library for my little brother to watch. One Saturday morning, I just walked into the TV room and found him watching what I believe was the Duck and Diesel trilogy tape. Sadly I have never seen Shining Time Station nor Tugs as a kid till I recently joined the community. But this documentary of yours is still looking great Dan. ^^ Can't wait to see another chapter!

I think I started watching TTTE on Nick Jr when I was younger I never watched TUGS until 2012
My earliest Thomas memory is when my brother came home with a Make Someone Happy VHS when i was 1 i'd say...this is from what family been telling me. As for Tugs, I saw it on CZcams since 2006. Got hooked from it there, and slowly proceeding to have one of the largest Tugs memorabilia collections out there.
Fun Fact: Erica Luttrell, who played Kara Cupper from Shining Time Station, presently provides the voice of Sapphire in Steven Universe!
And don't forget: she was also the voice of Keesha Franklin in The Magic School Bus!

Interesting note at 21:25. To be fair, I didn't know Sodor was designed to be part of the British railway system until I read the original stories, sometime around 2000. I don't think Sodor's location was ever really mentioned, or at least made a big deal out of, during the entire run of Shining Time. Not to mention the ongoing changing of Britishisms to American equivalents, and later, the inclusion of George Carlin as narrator, and I was somehow led to the impression that Sodor must somewhere just off the Canadian border (right where Newfoundland should be).
My earliest memories of the blue Tank Engine date back to 2005 when I watched VHS tapes and DVDs my brothers had along with Tapes and DVDs I got from my local public library. I enjoyed both Ringo Starr and George Carlin’s narration of the classic era along with watching Shining Time Station DVDs. I continued to watch the tail end of the classic era and into the early cgi era. I eventually stopped keeping up with the show in late 2010 or early 2011. Now that I’m approaching adulthood, I look back fondly on the importance Thomas had on my character and personality. While Thomas is no longer what it used to be, I will always love the blue Tank Engine.

So revealing of a video! Although I only recently got to know TUGS (thanks to WildNorWester's episodes for this), I have no doubt it's a great legacy! As a British, I never actually watching Shining Time, and my earliest memory was watching Season 6 and 7 on TV.
My earliest memory of Thomas was a VHS we had of Thomas get's Tricked with Ringo narrating. Loved that VHS. It essentially was the 'origins' VHS for Thomas and Friends. I really fell in love with the music. Loved Gordon's theme when he tricked Thomas.

My earliest memory of Thomas was a VHS when I was young Thomas Gets Tricked the US version with Ringo Starr, witch immediately introduce me to the Engines. A very good job on the fourth chapter there, you shared some of the amazing history that I did not know about for both Thomas, Shining Time Station, and Tugs.

My earliest memory of Thomas was a tenth anniversary video tape my grandparents often showed me when I visited. I'd often talk along with George Carlin's narrations and memorize the stories by heart, reenacting them with my TOMY trains.
My earliest memory of Thomas was seeing Thomas on TV back in 2005. I remember I saw almost all of the episodes from season 4 that came on TV except Steam Roller. Passengers and Polish. Bowled Out and Mind that Bike were the only ones that I have never seen as a kid.

When I was 2 years old, My Parents got Me Some Thomas and Friends VHS tapes which is Better Late Than Never and Other Stories,Thomas, Percy and the Dragon and Other Stories,Tenders and Turntables and Other Stories,Daisy and Other Thomas Stories,and James Goes Buzz Buzz and Other Thomas Stories for My Second Birthday in 1994. And Thus I was fan of Thomas ever since.

I remember watching Shining Time Station on, I assume, PBS. However, I'd only remember the set of the main room of the station. I also remember seeing a TV episode about tugboats, but it's so hazy I don't know if it was TUGS or Theodore Tugboat.
I live in Mexico, (Born 2006) I remember I got a DvD in 2007 that had the first 5 episodes of TTTE, I mainly saw classic seasons, as for TUGS it was never translated to spanish, as for STS It was translated as 2009 and I don't remember what episode I saw. I think one of the first episode from TTTE I saw was Escape! because at that time season 4-5 was being translated.
I remember watching "TUGS" as a midway segment to an animated show called "Salty's Lighthouse", where each episode of the 20 minute episodes would be split into 2 halves, like an intimation, so we would have to find out what happens next. The show itself was half an hour long. The set, as the name suggests was inside a Lighthouse by the sea, and unlike shining time station, was fully animated and featured talking animals as well as humans. the events in the story, would correspond to an episode of Tugs.
My earliest memory of Thomas is likely "Thomas and the Magic Railroad", I was 1 so I likely didn't see it right away. My grandparents bought me the VHS and then I wanted to see more Thomas, thus, I was given my first VHS, "Best of Thomas" and my first episode was "Thomas gets Bumped".
I never knew what "Shining Time Station" was, so even as a kid the movie made no sense. But I loved Thomas and all his friends regardless, and would continue to for quite some time.

My earliest memory of Thomas is when the show was on PBS kids sport and DVDs, I saw Tugs on the internet and the first episode I saw was Ghost, I had one vhs of shining time station and it would be schemer special club.
First was Thomas. My dad is from england so he brought me Thomas and Friends British DVDs when i was little. Second was Shining Time Station. I was watching Thomas and The Magic Railroad Goofs by +GWRStudios and he was Talking about Shining Time Station. I reacerched it and started watching it. Third it was TUGS. I found out about it just recently while watching The Unlucky Tug.
My early memories of both Thomas The Tank Engine and Tugs, well lets start with the little Sodor tank engine Thomas, my early memories of Thomas was watching it on Nick Jr. UK and I had one series 1 VHS which was a 1993 or 1994 re-release of Troublesome Trucks (the re-release was renamed Thomas Goes Fishing) and I was absessed with the programme as it was good TV series, then I watched series 6 and 7 on CITV and Nick Jr. UK and I got all the other VHS tapes. As for Tugs, my early memories of Tugs was that I only watched the show on VHS and I loved how the show was as good Thomas but much more better.
I think my earliest memory of Thomas in childhood is either from Thomas Gets Tricked or Sing-Along and Stories VHS (I can't remember). For TUGS, I have no idea about the series, in fact the only tugboat-related series I know was Theodore Tugboat. I wouldn't know about TUGS until when I first saw CZcams when I came across the episode "Warrior". For Shining Time Station, same with TUGS, I have no idea about it in childhood since the only time I knew about it was Thomas and the Magic Railroad, so I wouldn't know about it until again when I first saw CZcams and came across the episodes "Too Many Cooks" and "Dan's Big Race".
I hope the next part is in development. Quite enjoyed watching this series.

I think my first memories of Thomas stem from playing with the Wooden Railway toys (Which I still proudly own most of) and watching DVDs of Seasons 1-7 (I owned Season 8-13 DVDs since I was born around when HiT bought the series, but I always preferred the older episodes over them).

As an American, Shining Time Station was my introduction to Thomas. I got to where I liked Thomas, but the station wasn't that interesting to me. Now that I've read the Railway Series and seen the original British version of the TV show, looking back, I resent some of the changes to the narration that PBS imposed upon Thomas for the sake of political correctness, particularly never calling Sir Topham Hatt "The Fat Controller".
Examples:
1) Trouble In The Shed
UK) "Oh indeed!" said the Fat Controller, "we'll see about that! Engines on my railway do as they are told!"
US) "We'll see about that!" said Sir Topham Hatt. "No engine on my railway is too important for small jobs!"
2) The Sad Story Of Henry (aka Come Out, Henry!)
UK) He wondered if he would ever be allowed out to pull trains again. But I think he deserved his punishment, don't you?
US) How long do you think Henry will stay in the tunnel before he overcomes his fear of the rain and then decides to journey out again?
3) Percy Runs Away
UK) "I hope you are sorry, and understand that you are not so important after all!"
US) "I hope you are sorry, and understand that every job on the railway is important!"
I can understand substituting American railroad terminology for British railway terminology (i.e., "conductor" for "guard", "freight car" for "truck", "throw the switch" for "turn the points", etc.) But these sorts of changes were unnecessary and blunted the message that Rev. Awdry wanted to get across in his original stories that the UK version of the show succeeded at.

Shining Time Station was such a cool show, and one of my favorites to tune in to after school. It certainly did its job of getting me and most of my neighborhood indoctrinated toward the Thomas stories, but the wraparound "Saved by the Station Bell" plots were just as fun. I wish I'd collected some of the videos made for it; that Schemer spin-off seems like great fun, especially the Masterpiece Theater-like title sequence!

For Shining Time Station it was getting up every Saturday/Sunday morning and watching George Carlin tell a story and then watching an episode of Thomas! For tugs it was the log episode which was the first one I ever watched!
