- This is a great tutorial on how to refinish an exterior Oak wood front door and seal it to protect it for future use. I've shared some quick tips on how to clean a solid wood door and my favorite stain plus sealer to use on top of a polyurethane finish. This is a project that only took a few hours and restored an exterior wood front door to new again.
Full disclosure; PolyShades is supposed to be for indoor use. That being said, I couldn't find a product that didn't require stripping the old stain off of the entire wood door first. The calling card for this product is that it can be used over previously finished surfaces. Since the door is covered under a large porch and not ever in direct sunlight, I decided to give it a try. It's been over two years since the door was refinished and it still looks amazing.

Thank-you Pam for this video......I may have to restore a few wooden doors this week and I like your method the best.
Compared with several others, yours is the best. I'm going to follow step by step.
thanks you saved my day
I had great results following your video. Thanks!!
I'm so glad thanks for letting me know.
Thank you for this video! My doors need refinishing and I want to try to do it myself, but was hesitant that I would mess them up. Do you know if this process is okay for reclaimed cypress doors? Thank you again!
I saw on your can of Poly Shade does not say oil based. At the hardware store they say even the oil based Poly Shades are for indoor use only and you put it outside. Are they wrong?
Thanks
It looks refreshed- can you change the color of the oak using this? Would this be a good product to use for updating oak cabinets in the kitchen?
Hi Rosemary, yes you can use a different color stain to change the look of the wood (I used the same color stain). That being said, you can definitely darken the look but it would be hard to lighten the look. As far as your Oak cabinets...I don't see why this technique wouldn't work for them!
@@RepurposeandUpcycle , Thanks!
You should take the hardware off under all circumstances. Because if you don’t, you’ll get scratches and gashes on the hardware, and around it.
Hi! I was just curious how your parents’ door has held up since you stained it? Would you do anything differently? I’m going to follow your instructions and do mine! Also, how long do you think it would take the door to dry on a sunny day? Thanks for taking the time to do this video. It’s really helpful!
It's been over a year and the door looks the same today as it did then! As far as dry time, I would follow the instructions of your product.
Did the polly turn yellowish ?

Can I follow same steps for fiberglass door ?
Fiberglass is a form of plastic so I'm not sure. You can always test a small area and see.
Can you share how much do you charge for this project?
This is purely a tutorial so I didn't charge for it.
It would have been nice if you had shown all the steps !!!!
well , it is possible to do it this way IF , your door is not exposed to sun , if it is "very much" in the shade and does NOT "deal with the elements" too much .... YES it will be "beautiful" , but for how long ???? That is the question ..... The product you used is pretty much a DIY interior product for furniture type stuff ...... Exterior is a bit different , and you need exterior products ..... Best just to stain and then clearcoat with an exterior clearcoat ...... two separate products ...... Plus interior oil based polys dry hard and brittle , and will start cracking and flaking in time , but like I said , if your door is well covered from the elements , maybe it will be fine ...... it's all about that sun wind and rain
It's been going on a few years now and it looks just as good now and the day I applied it!
@@RepurposeandUpcycle Okay good , and like I said , if the door is somewhat "protected" from the elements like hot sun , then it might work out okay , thank you for letting me know it's holding up ..... but I suspect you are in a milder region , is that correct ??? Or your door is somewhat "protected" from the elements like "summer sun" ??? Would I be correct in that ??? Just curious
@@shure46 The door is on a porch but we live in the deep south a few miles from the beach. Definitely not a mild region....
@@RepurposeandUpcycle Okay , and thanks for the info .....
@@RepurposeandUpcycle First let me say you did a nice job and I watched again and can see you do have a shady porch , and lots of trees around , I can see your door does stay somewhat protected , so your method is probably just fine , and I bet it worked just fine , and it is a pretty easy way , I'd say for the circumstance , a good way to redo one's door , easy peasy and it worked quite well ...
Poly shades is NOT for exterior use. Do not use this product for the exterior of a door!
WRONG! Poly shades is NOT for exterior use. Do not use this product for the exterior of a door!
Hmmm, you cut a lot of corners...well, okay.
You picked the wrong door that did t need no work … also that product works. Stick around for more than a year I guarantee you … that ls a lazy technique
I'm not real sure what you mean. The door has held up great!
@@RepurposeandUpcycle well then the door I did last week should hold up for 75 years !!!! ..... sanded down , applied varathane stain , 4 coats of varathane exterior spar urethane !!!!! I have no idea how your ONE COAT of interior "stain and poly" can hold up for very long ..... I seriously have my doubts of your door getting any real rain and sun on it , BUT , you have said a few times "it's holding up" so I gotta go by what you say , I won't call you a liar , and I do not think you are .... I just think your door is somewhat protected from much rain and sun ..... The one i did has no porch , gets full weather in Texas ..... Pretty rough on doors around here
