Great job! Painter of 25 years. Gelstain is awesome for this application.. Pro tip. Scuff up the previous varnish pretty good so it adheres. Dont shake varnish always stir it has to do with bubbles in the varnish and have fun! Cant go wrong!

Very good video, I may tackle this. If there is someway you could take the volume down of the music or better yet turn it off while you are talking it would be so helpful. I found myself getting frustrated watching the video due to the music. :(. I will be looking at more of your videos! :)

Very informative, going to try my door using your video for guidance. My suggestion for future videos is to not use that background music. It was distracting and you were having to talk over it to be heard.
Looks amazing! My contractor did an awful job on our door, so I'm going to have to redo it. :/ But I would recommend taking thr music off your videos. It really distracting and hard to hear you.

Do I need to use paint remover to remove latex paint from door, or can I just sand the fiberglass door down
How did you get the clean slate residue ohff?
Always lightly sand, steel wool on curved surfaces. Your objective is slighty dull the previous polyurethane. Do not sand into the stain coat. General Finishes gel stain is very good, Old Masters so so, not sure about Miniwax gel stain. It might have been better to stain worn areas than repeat whole door in 24 hours. Exterior polyurethane with uv protectants 3 coats either satin or semi gloss a must.
My door is a stainable fiberglass and, like yours, it has faded very badly at the bottom half. When I stained it, 22 years ago, I also applied a coat of polyurethane on it. I have been wanting to restain it, but I wonder if I need to strip the polyurethane that is still at the top half before I do that. What should I do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I have never used a polyurethane. Rather than strip the poly, I would give it a light sanding. Then wipe down to remove all dust before applying 2 coats of the Gel Stain and 2 coats of the Matte Sealer.
@@carollander2515 Thanks for your response. Here's what I did to the door today. I sprayed some Awesome (the brand) cleaner and sprayed the entire door with it. You should've seen how the old stain came off when I wiped it! It almost stripped it all off except for the top part of the door. That stuff is powerful! Then I sanded the parts where the polyurethane hung on and tomorrow I'll try to stain it. I noticed in your video that you put the stain on and didn't wipe it off? Just let it dry on the door?
@@ccg6244 That's awesome ~ is that the name of the brand? Correct I didn't wipe off the stain, but that's not to say you couldn't. Depends on how deep you want the stain color. Report back!

Also remove hardware if possible, lay door down on saw horses may be helpful.

You didn’t sand it first? My door is rough with light and dark patches where the poly is worn off
In that case, I would definitely give the door a light sanding. Be sure to wipe it clean of dust before you stain.
This tutorial only works if you want your door to be darker than it was before

That’s correct. Now, if your door is not in good condition, a light sanding first would smooth out any rough places.
