Hi. I would like to thank you for this video. I immediately ordered this product and worked on my doors as soon as I got it. What a difference! I still need to stain my doors but now I can wait until the fall. 👍
Yay!!! I’m so happy I could help. This stuff is amazing. If I hadn’t found it, I probably would have been staining my door every 2 years. Now, I can probably preserve the finish for 5 years or more. We’ll see. 😁
As I mentioned, I used this product and I'm thrilled with the results. I would like there to be more of a shine though. Do you know if I can put a clear coating on top of this a d if do what do you recommend? It's been about a month now since I applied the product. Thanks.
@@arleneinsua7281 I haven't tried applying a top coat on this. Top Coats need a clean surface to stick too. I would think you'd actually need to wipe the door down with some sort of degreaser or cleaner to prep the surface. Then apply an exterior grade top coat, like Spar Urethane. But, I'd check the directions on whatever top coat you choose for application instructions. Did you apply a second coat of Sunshield, let it soak in for 30 minutes, then buff it with a clean rag? It doesn't leave a high-gloss shine but my door is shiny.
Yes, i did apply a second coat. Don't get me wrong, the door looks great, I would just like it to shine a little.
That's exactly what I need to do here is SW Louisiana! thanks!
I love how I look this up as a newfound problem of mine, and everyone commenting is from Houston. Side note: I'm from Houston
Cheers
Houston doors have a hard life. 😊
I didn't really expect much when I clicked on this video to be honest because it wasn't "stripping" the door. Wow, that really looks great!
Thanks!!
Dallas here, watched your video and purchased this stuff. Door looks amazing. Can’t believe how great it looked and I’m glad I don’t need to stain my door now.
It’ll at least help prolong the time between staining. 😊
Another Houstonian with the same door issues. I was just about to take my doors off and refinish, but will try this first. Your results are definitely encouraging! Thanks for posting.
Thanks! I hope it helps put off that refinish for a few more years. 🤞🤞
Same here lol 😂 was happy to see a video by a fellow Houstonian. Thanks for sharing
@@AbbottsAtHome Have completed applying two coats. Definitely made a difference. FYI - I used a 2" paint brush for the application. Covered extremely well and got into the crevices of the door molding.
Clearly, we all have problem doors in this city. 🤓🙏
Good idea! I’ll try a brush next time. Thanks!!
Thanks for this video! We bought our house in Spring and have been looking for ways to make the front door look good without spending a fortune. Most people don’t fully understand just how brutal the sun is down south. Thanks again!
You’re welcome!
During the epidemic it’s been so hard to get someone out to redo my new home’s front door. You saved me ! I bought one bottle for my double door. After cleaning, I put it on thick and let it soak it up. it looks way better than oil alone product. Thanks !
You’re so welcome. I’m so happy it helped!!
I’m in Cypress! The sun is brutal here 😂 I’ll be giving this a try; thanks!
So happy to help, RaShonda. I hope you like it as much as I do. 😊
Thank you for this! So to the point and informative. My mom wanted me to do a quick DIY to get remedy the haziness in her door as well. Your video was a lifesaver ❤️
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this information! Do you think the product is similar to Scott’s Liquid Gold?
Omg love that , so easy to do , I’ll do my door tomorrow, thanks 🙏
This was really helpful. I also live in Houston and I think this may solve my problem. I'll give it a try
Wow it looks great! Thank you for the tip
Thank you!! 😊
It worked fabulously. Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
I washed our front door with some wood cleaner, but it didn't look that great. I just ordered this product and can hardly wait to tackle our front door this spring. Thanks for this video!
Let me know how it goes. I LOOOVE this stuff. :)
Wow! Houstonian here about to clean my door 😂 thanks for this!
You're so welcome!
The door looks great.
Thanks sister I love you for this video! It helped me a lot!
You’re welcome, Shikha!!! So happy to help. 😁
Thank you so much, I also live in Houston. I am going to try this product before staining.
Hopefully, it let's you postpone staining for a couple more years. :)
I live in Houston, thanks for the tip
Any time!
Finished product looks really good
Thanks!
Thank you! I'm in Houston and I've been trying to figure out how to deal with my sun damaged door
Happy to help. :)
I also live in Houston. Your video is extremely helpful. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Hello from Katy , thank you so much for sharing your video .
You are so welcome!
Yeasss the sun is hot in Houston !!!!!
Thank you so much. I live in Florida, so I feel you pain. Thanks again.
You are so welcome!
Wow. After my painter didn’t show I was trying to find the best solution to get door looking great again. After watching I immediately picked up a bottle of Howard sun shield product from Ace Hardware and it worked great within 30 mins. . Thank u so much.
Yay! I’m so glad to help and that it saved you some $$$$. 😊
Thank you for your info. I live in The Vintage area. 👍
You’re welcome!!!
I was about to say, you must live in Houston, I got the same bad condition door as you do, going to try it out!
I hope it helps your door as much as it did mine!
I live down in the RGV Texas.I use Watco Danish oil. I highly recommend it. It's a rub on finish. They make different shades of the oil. Great video and Cheers!
I Love Watco on furniture! I didn’t realize it could be used on exterior wood. Do you seal it afterwards??
@@AbbottsAtHome No it's self sealing. It lasts a good few years depending on the amount of moisture and direct sun. It's pretty east to use. I'm pretty sure you could seal it but I never have. I do it every 3 - 4 years.
@@danpena4472 Hello Dan, My west facing door in DFW has the milky/hazy (Oxidizing) look on the lower 1/3 of door given I have a partial covered front porch. Did you clean (what product or vinegar/water?) and use the Watco rub on the door? My finish is a flat to satin finish and don't want to add gloss whatsoever. I could try to match color or use the Sunshield product or maybe Linseed oil. Thanks!
@@stevewohnoutka5622 I cleaned the wood door with some Murphys soap and water. I let it dry about 24 hours. I then put 4 coats of the Watco Danish oil on it. About 1 hour between each coat. I used a cotton rag. Let that dry over night then wipe off any excess. I will probably be doing it this weekend again because it has been a few years. I should make a video. If you need more than 4 coats put a couple more on and let it dry an bit then wipe off.. It does NOT have a sheen to it but it sure looks great. The danish finish is beautiful. I used dark walnut or many dark pecan... The bottom of my door always is more worn and sun damaged, put a few extra coats on that. My porch is also partially covered but faces south. Cheers.
Looks great , makes such a difference. It's like oiling wood but with Sun protection in it .
Exactly! It's amazing how much a quick, easy DIY can improve the look of this door. :)
Exactly! It's amazing how much a quick, easy DIY can improve the look of this door. :)
Austin here, buying now lol
Texas must be supporting this company. 😅
Awesome video! I’m also from Cincinnati and ended up moving to Texas (Dallas)! Quick question for you... do you recommend doing this after the door is refinished? My door is 3 years old and it’s in decent shape just wanted to maintain it....think this is it but wanted to just double check
Hi Armin! Absolutely, use that Sunshield a few times a year to keep it looking nice and it should extend the life of that finish by protecting it. :)
OMG ... I also live in Houston and have the same issue as you with my front door. In fact, my front door looks almost identical to yours except the stained glass design is a little different. I'll go to ACE to pick up the Sunshield Wood Conditioner and apply it to my front door ASAP. What color of the Polyshades Stain are you using? The color you have on your door is the same color of my door and want to know the name so I can get the right one. Thank you so much for this very informative video!!!
That Houston Sun is a killer! Having spent most of my life in Ohio, I try to explain that to people but I don’t think they get it. 90 degrees in Ohio and 90 degrees in Houston feel different because the sun is just that little bit closer and it feels like it’s peeling your skin off. 😂 I used the color Mission Oak. So, if your door looks as bad as my door in the before photos on this blog post, use the polyshades abbottsathome.com/restain-door-wood-quick-easy/
But, if it’s only slightly discolored, like in the video, use the Sunshield to moisturize and protect the finish. That’ll make it look newly stained. Both should be at Ace. Good luck and thanks!!!!
@@AbbottsAtHome OMG ... your front door looks exactly like mine. With the same red bricks and two side panels. Again, our stained glass designs are different. Otherwise, I'd swear that was my front door ... down to the same door lock and deadbolt ... LOL! I just had my front door restained last year so the color is sun beaten & faded but I think after I apply the Sunshield, it should be ok. Besides, as you know Houston right now is already very hot and humid so I don't think I can restain the door now. I'll just apply the Sunshield and wait until later in the year when our weather cools down enough for me to restain the door. Thanks again for the info. on how to restain the door using polyshades. I'll save it in a safe place for future reference! Have a great weekend and Happy Mother's Day to you!!!
It does look nice. Not sure I want to redo it every year though...but it's pretty painless, so maybe
Thank you for your story. I live in Palm Springs and I'm curious with intense heat in Texas, in your experience, how long did the sunshield product keep the door looking good be before reapplication? Every 3 months?
I’d guess 3 times a year for me. Maybe April, July, and November. Shorter spacing in the summer heat. 😊
We live in Kemah and have a west facing front door. I, like you, don't want to refinish the door every year. That's why I was looking for a solution and for this. Awesome video. Great advise. Did you get that at HD or Lowes
Thanks! I bought mine on Amazon. But, I know I saw it at Ace and I think WalMart too. Lowe's and/or HD probably have it too.
Wow, as a houstonians we know this kind of issues, so just wondering, for the prep, did you clean the door with towel, alcohol or something else?
Hello great video and info! I have a stained cypress front porch that is getting same sun damage as your door. Would this be slippery for a floor do you think based off the feel of your door? Also does it say can be used on softwoods because I cant find the info online?
Hi! It's hard to say if this would make a porch floor slippery. You buff it in, so it doesn't feel slippery to your finger. But, anything is slippery wet. So, I'm not sure. But, I do know you can use it on softwoods. It's similar to Orange Oil.
I am in Houston area too! My door looks similar to yours, except it has mold/algae built up on it :/ How would you suggest cleaning it before applying this product? Great vid btw!
Thanks Molly. I've never had mold on a door. So, I would recommend taking some pictures of it to Sherwin Williams. They're great at knowing what to do.
Did you clean the door prior to? If so, with what?
Thanks for this video! My wood is super dry and needs to be restrained as well…so you think I can put this on to help the wood and then stain?
Hi! You don’t want to apply this before staining. Here’s my favorite way to stain a door. www.abbottsathome.com/best-way-to-stain-exterior-wood-door/
@@AbbottsAtHome thank you!
What color stain did you use on this door, please? I am looking for this color. It is beautiful!
It's Minwax's Jacobean. :)
Have you tried Howard Restor-a-Finish? Apparently this is a stain so I assume it would last longer.
If there is some peeling or cracks, do I need to sand the front door?
Hi. If you plan to sand the front door, I'd go ahead and refinish the door instead of using this wax. Check out the steps for using gel stain on doors here: www.abbottsathome.com/best-way-to-stain-exterior-wood-door/
This spray on wax can be used to protect the gel stain finish afterward. :)
Hi. Question. Did you put a poly coat on the door when you stained it the first time?
Hi Jeanie! Check out this post for my latest recommendations for stain and top coat on a front door. There's a gel stain and top coat combo that I love. www.abbottsathome.com/can-you-stain-a-door-without-taking-it-down/
@@AbbottsAtHome I’m a professional painter of 40 years and I use masters gel stain. I’ve used it for many years. I needed to match an exact color so I couldn’t use the other product I Have refinished my share of exterior doors and am looking forward to using the product in your video
Can it be used on old painted doors? Just moved into a very old apartment.
I'm not sure how it will work on paint. If you can't or don't want to repaint your door this year, I'd give it a try. It will restore shine, at least, until you can repaint the door. Just be sure to use a product like TSP, to thoroughly clean the wax off the door before you paint again. 👍
I wonder if you sealed the door after treating it if it would last longer🤔
Hi Chase, I'm not sure a sealer would stick well to this. If you're wanting to go for extra effort and longer lasting results, I'd use an exterior grade gel stain and sealer. 🙂
Looks great but a little skeptical....anything is going to look better when "wet". Would be interesting to see like a month later.
This is a wipe-on maintenance product, not a long-term fix. So, you need to reapply as needed. For our full sun exposure door, in Texas, it needs to be applied every 2 to 3 months during the summer and every 3 or 4 months during the rest of the year. It’s an $8 sun shield for any exterior wood. No need to be skeptical, you can try it for yourself or not. 👍
Hi , do you still use the product? does it give you the same results? any updates ?. TIA.
It still works. 👍😊
Does this product work on my fiberglass wood colored door? It has the same white milky stains! Can you help me please 😩😩😩
Hi! Yes, you can use this or an orange oil type product for doors. It should help with that.
I have a fiberglass door brown color .it has like a white flaky particle probably from sun. ..l live in San Antonio I try taking it off with stainless steal pad but when it dries u can see flaky wHite debris not sure what it is..now what I i usually do with rag i put old fashion wood polish works for a bit..
Another Houstonian from Ohio ... suffering from door issue :(
The struggle is real. :)
How Do you remove hard water stains?
Hard water stains on your door?? Painted or stained?
Deck stain
i watched this video and i bought this stuff . i put it on and BAM ! the door looks brand new . hoping it doesn't mess door up , but then again the sun is tearing my door up anyways. it was kinda weird cause my rag would turn real dark like dirt was coming off. but even on second coat rag was still turning dark. anyways the door looks great and i didn't spend 500 buck getting someone to re stain it. good hack!!!
Thanks, James!!! Happy it helped.
