I really like that Eeveelution. It fits the psychic type so well.
Its been my favorite since I layed my eyes on it in Colosseum. Leafeon is a very close second since thats what my first eevee evolved into.

They are my personal favorites
I think Umbreon fails at delivering a dark type eeveelution. It *looks* dark but it doesn't actually do anything related to the type.
Yk this video rlly made me love this pokemon more and appreciate the designs, with all the comparisons it rlly makes this pokemon alot more interesting imo

I'm not Japanese nor an expert in Japanese mitology but I'm fairly certain that the split tail comes from the "nekomata" legend, where, if a cat lives 100 years, it's tail will split in two and it will gain mystical powers
I was gonna say the same thing.
Nekomata is a yokai though. Yokai is a whole category - the closest thing you can really compare to it in the west is the idea of Fae as a whole diverse category of legendary creature

I have a theory that its fur is like that of a Cornish Rex cat in that it feels like velvet and is very fine to absorb sunlight easily, while the tufts of fur under it’s ears are longer so it can pick up psychic energy better
Espeon is just a really graceful Pokemon, I could 100% see royalty in the Pokemon world having one. It's so majestic.
I always associated Persians with the higher classes in pokemon.
weird thing to mention but my little brother once thought this pokemon was mewtwo and once he saw the actual mew himself he was silent for a straight hour.

Well to be fair Mew DOES have DNA of every Pokémon so it’s not that far fetched
I mean... Mew is supposed to be the genetic source of all Pokémon. It's the only Pokémon other than Ditto with Transform, implying that it has a very malleable genetic structure.
Eevee has a very malleable genetic structure, and Espeon has more than a few similarities with Mew. It wouldn't be the weirdest thing for Eevee to be 'tapping into' genetic info from Pokémon of the type they evolve into.

Yeah got to second this notion. Sylveon is my second favorite (Umbreon is my first), but I can't deny that Sylveon is a little odd.
Sylveon’s your typical cutsey pastel fairy creature. Espeon is alien-like and has no familiar tropes like bows or baby-doll eyes to indicate something worldly.
@@jamieadams2589 well interpretations of what a fairy creature can look like varies wildly from culture to culture but when most people think of fairies a lot of feminine and soft traits come to mind. Pokemon specifically seems to stick to the notion of cute and playful or childish symbols like cute cosmetics (bows included), big eyes, and pastel color palettes. Look no further than other pokemon like Ribombee, audino, (mega)diancie, g-rapidash, etc.. those kinds of cosmetics aren’t restricted to fairy types only ofc but its a common theme among them. What I’m saying is that imo sylveon’s design for what it is doesnt seem all that weird to me, in fact it fits more in line with other pokemon of its type than espeon does, respectively. But to be fair the psychic type is more ambiguous as to what a creature embodying it would look like, and the theme pokemon has set up with fairy types is more linear and obvious.
@@jamieadams2589 nono, weird in general. Because in general espeon is definitely the weirder looking one because of its vague inspirations and how they were all sort of slapped together. I was trying to explain why I didn’t think sylveon was a weird design at all (compared to espeon), but I guess I went along on an unrelated rant about fairy types in general. Sorry abt that.
Same thoughts! Especially upon Sylveon released. (1) She doesn't have the same eyes shapes as the other eeveelutions and (2) i think she was overly designed unlike other eeveelutions which are simple but has an elegant looks and (3) she is also overly colored ( she has 3-4 colors unlike the other which only has 1-2 additional colors)..she simply violates every eeveelution rules 🤣
Not to mention Sylveon was released alone without other eeveelution

When you reach Johto, there are gonna be a lot of jumps because you're covering entire families here in Gen 1.
And we can’t forget that Espeon is the lead character in JelloApocalypse’s outstanding ‘Dogs in Love’
Espeon and Umbreon are my absolute fave eeveelutions. And you're right about the split tail being a reference to japanese folklore (look up "nekomata") which fits in really nicely with Johto's whole traditional japanese theme and old temples and towers.
And the best part about Espeon? It's cute. Cuteness is a trait that really matters in my eyes.

I really like how the Pokedex and anime describe the buildup and evolution of Espeon.
Eevee starts developing precognitive powers thanks to the bond it has with it's trainer or partner. When Eevee senses something bad is about to happen, it works hard to prevent that, allowing it to evolve into Espeon and really hone in on those traits of precognition and psychic power.
Just makes sense when it's a friendship Eeveelution that it would develop it's psychic powers to help it's trainer.
The use of FFVI music here fits the eries yet calm expli action of this pokemon works so wonderfully.

She's cute, simple and majestic, yet she's strong like a mini Alakazam (I don't really like the Abra line for some personal reasons)

I feel as though vaporeon is the worst designed one. They just added fins to its tail and frills for the vaporeon mane.

Those two are the best evolutions, they look more like a unknown creature than the original three
I love Umbreon, but their design doesn't tell me anything about being a dark type besides the black color.. we'll see
The moon rings all around it’s body are a pretty good indicator too. I think it could’ve been dialed up a bit more but I do think it pretty clearly communicated what they were going for given limited possibilities with early sprites.
Well it was originally a poison type that got changed mid way, which does make a lot of sense to me
The funny thing is I think Umbreon was designed at the same time “faint attack“ was created.
Because at least in Pokémon gold and Silver the animation for the attack seem to fit that Pokémon so well.
The black disappears first leaving behind the golden rings for a half a second before they to fade away, and then the attack comes.
It’s almost as if the attack was specifically made for the Pokémon to show off.
@@SavveGaming not at all. Dark type in japanese is literally the "evil type", not the "darkness type" or such. And umbreon does not look inherently evil tbh. Still my favourite eeveelution.
@@aeleron0577 I mean id argue no dark type in gen 2 looks evil at all mischievous maybe but evil not at all. I think the dark/evil type comes through pretty well with the color scheme and simplistic design. It def could be dialed up some like vaporeon or sylveon but I still think what they were going for comes through. A naughty little cat/dog pet.

Espeon is my second favorite Pokémon out of all of them, so pleased to see you love it’s design. I always felt like it was the perfect mixture of graceful poise and uncanny oddness. Like a lot of Psychic Pokémon either give off the feeling that they aren’t fully present or are somehow above everything, like Gardevoir or Alakazam, and others give off the impression that they’re psychic by accident or use it in dopey or playful ways, like Spoink or Mew. Espeon is fully aware of the world, and is using its Psychic powers to affect that world. It can pay attention to you, and that can be a very, very scary thing.
I love Espeon, easily my favorite eeveelution and probably one of my overall favorites. I just love how beautiful and mysterious it seems, and I love it when pokemon have glowing eyes. (Especially Duskull, whose red eye under the skull mask is perfect in every way)

I definitely think it's underrated. There are quite a few who find it off-putting but I don't mind them.
Usually didn't feel anything towards this Eeveelution. Didn't realize that it's simplicity helps a lot in it's design.
Espeon is my favorite eeveelution, no contest. The sleek design and the nod to the nekomata makes the look clean, the way it evolves implies it develops such a deep connection with its owner that it develops psychic abilities, and it has a wide move set that lend it to be quite flexible on your team.
I just noticed Espeon's little mouth. It looked better before I noticed it. I liked thinking it didn't have a mouth
Espeon and Umbreon are hands down the best Eeveelutions. Their designs feel so well put together not just for themselves but for their duality with each other. My and my fiancé being the silly little queers that we are like to use them to represent ourselves. Espeon (one of his favourites) for him, Umbreon (my favourite Pokemon in general) for me. Because we are again, silly little queers who love sun and moon duality characters.

Actually, it's about the tale of a yokai cat that was a normal cat and its tail end split in two to represent it has gained mystic powers.
Espeon is my favorite pokemon, It looks so graceful and smart with so little, the design is simple yet imposing. The look on its face says it all, doesn't need fancy ribbons to convey it.

another interesting trait about espeon that makes it look more alien is that it only has 2 digits on it's paws, unlike every other eeveelution that has 3
Espeon is also probably meant to reference the Carbuncle monster, also famous and recurring in Final fantasy. That's what the gem and the big ears are for. The ears also make it look more fox-like
Espeon is defintely my fav eeveelution, the forehead gem came from Carbuncle while the split tail came from nekomata.

I never thought Espeon looked weird or alien, I just always thought 'wow, purple kitty!!!' I used it in my Sun playthrough and I can definitively say it is my favorite Eeveelution. It's so adorable. Big purple eyes, cat shaped body, huge ears, the split tail, and the gem... rather than alien, I always thought it looked very majestic, as I sort of imagine psychics to be. 🐱
The split tail IS actually borrowed from Yokai. When cats got really old they would become magic and grow a second tail and be able to control spirits. In order to do this cats would get their tails chopped off. It also is probably the reason the Japanese Bobtail breed of cat was bred.
Espeon will always have a special place in my heart as it was the first eeveelution that I ever used.
