It’s funny how Sun and Moon is the most goofy series yet it has some of the saddest episodes in the entire anime. Also, I love the theme of family in this series hence why Ash winning the Alola league felt much more impactful since Alola was essentially his 2nd home
Saddest and darkest. In some episodes, we get to see pokemon dying. Like the one where Ash was transported to the past and met a Trevenant and when he's back to the present time we get to see Trevenant's dead body. Most def die from old age. And then in the Minior eps, Sophocles saw a dying Minior right in front of him which triggered his PTSD because he already saw a dying Minior when he was younger. And probably the darkest one is when Ash got to a different universe where Alola has turned into a post apocalyptic country thanks to Guzzlord. They didn't show it but tons of people and pokemon most definitely died there during the invasion.
I think being the goofy series allowed the sad moments to hit harder, also having his non pikachu main pokemon backstory not being about being abandoned by his trainer helps
Fun stuff. Sun and Moon was the first Pokémon anime I watched and was and still is my favorite one. It's really cool to see people who appreciate what is probably the best one out of them all.
On thing I did like about SM is that we actually see Ash training his pokemon more, rather than just the 'we need to win the rematch' type training. It's a nice change to see training tackled as personal growth, like with rockruff and litten, rather than just objective achievement.
Sun and Moon was exactly how it was supposed to be. The feeling of XY wouldn't fit the environment of Alola and I appreciated that. And the message of family was so good, they gave Ash a second home. Plus, no shame, Sun and Moon was the ONLY series to make me shed tears. Especially the freaking last episode......that plane scene.
Between Stoutlant and Tapu Fini making everyone see their loved ones again, i was losing it lmao. And Team Skulls final appearance had me happy crying. Theyre my favorite team for a damn good reason and I still want them back XD
7:07 Yeah their Pokémon had a deep bond with them. If I'm not wrong even they refused to give them to Giovanni. Or just freed them. Do you remember ANYTHING of James's Inkay?
Honestly, I think Sun and Moon anime series was highly slept on! I did feel a bit skeptical at first as well going from XY to Sun and Moon due to the animation at first but like you mentioned, when I watched more episodes it definitely grew on me! I honestly like the different reactions all the characters have, the growth development they gave Ash achieving a title as a Champion in this league, gave a nice segment into Pokemon Journeys for him competing in the Top 8. Overall, great video! Def subbed to your channel and hope to see more content like this!
In all honesty I saw a picture of Ash in this series and I was like “that looks bad” then I watched the whole sun/moon series and liked it and when Ash was leaving Alola I felt a bit emotional
As someone who watched the entire Sun/Moon anime, my opinion of it is mostly "there were too many food-eating scenes." Also, my BIGGEST gripe with the series was the atrocious choreography for the fight sequences. Generally, every high-stakes battle could be boiled down to, "Opposing Kahuna/Rival uses their Z-Move (an animation which takes 20 seconds to watch and was probably already re-used 5 times before to save budget), Ash/whoever survives it and does the exact same thing, GG battle over"
I watched it during lockdown in 2020 and it brought me so much joy! It was so cozy and the sunny beaches made me feel on holiday even though I wasn't allowed to leave the house. It became my comfort anime and I still look at it fondly
I love the Pokémon Sun and Moon anime, it’s still my favorite Pokémon anime. The ending almost made me cry after being with those characters for so many seasons, Ash leaving made me so sad
Sun and Moon animation is one of my favorites. As an animator myself, I can see the pure emotion poured into it. That's not just with the character's emotions, but every aspect from the movement of the elements and all of the line work shows just how much effort was put in. X and Y has its moments like that too but Sun and Moon shows it in more burst (just without ash-greninja lol) and it's amazing!
I remember when it first came out. I was so excited, i watched it in sub as the episodes dropped after really loving XYZ. I liked the style because the lack of detail made for far more expressive animation, and that first Japanese opening gives me a lot of nostalgia. I only dropped it because I was (and in some cases still am) not very committed to most series. If I stuck with it, im sure it would have a special place in my heart, even if I don't play much Pokémon. Thank you for giving this underrated series a spotlight!
That episode where Mallow reunites with her mom reduced me to a mess, and this is coming from someone who has seen at least 6 anime moms die in tragic ways (I’m a One Piece fan if you hadn’t guessed, so…yeah.)
Sun & Moon was when I noticed that part of the fandom was getting toxic. The show definitely had its flaws & it wasn’t for everyone, but there were people blindly hating/bashing this series and treating XYZ like it was the greatest thing since the invention of fire I do admit that Kalos is one of the better sagas of Ash’s journey, but it had its flaws too & I’ve started to resent the series after seeing how the XY stans bashed Sun & Moon
Yeah a lot of people hated Sun and Moon just blindly. I mean I also loved XY and XYZ, but Sun and Moon is also great. And as a fan who actually watched every episode of the anime, Sun and Moon is such a breath of fresh air. Back when XY/Z aired new I thought it was cool how so many people now watch the anime, cause before a lot of fans didn't even like the anime, XY brought many fans to the show cause it acted so mature, but that also made Ash a bit less Ash, he kind of lost his goofy side and was sometimes too serious in XY, so it was nice that Ash got his goofy side back in Sun and Moon. But then a lot of people that liked XY/Z started to hate on how Ash acts so childish, evnthough that was actually always part of his character, too. And I think it's actually cool, cause it makes him becoming serious even more special. And I also noticed how a lot of XY fans started to complain that Ash got reset again and isn't strong anymore, which really shows that these people didn't really watch SM, cause you can see how skilled Ash still is in battles and some of his Pokemon are training a lot at the beach, so no wonder they are strong if they train daily ^^
@@jjojon7072 I wasn’t really on online forums or engaged with the anime community when May first joined, though BW was more of a problem with the generation as a whole than just the anime
@@jjojon7072The point is since the Pokemon anime got so popular during XY/Z there were more people overall in the Pokemon anime fandom which also lead to more toxic people. Before there were simply not that many people watching the anime, so sure there were a few people that complained about a few things (anime related), but they just dropped the anime and didn't feel the need to hate on it as much as the toxic people during Sun and Moon, which I'm sure also affected other people in thinking that Sun and Moon isn't good, without them even trying. So yeah it got worse anime wise after XYZ ended and Sun and Moon started, simply because there were way more people and overall more people on the internet than before when the other changes before took place. And the people that complained about Misty being replaced, the BW anime being a soft reboot, etc. were not as "toxic"/persistent about it as the haters of the Sun and Moon anime (at least in my experience). The worst toxic Pokemon fans back then were really the Gen 5 games haters, but at the same time a lot of people suddenly thought they were too old for Pokemon and stopped playing it, so they didn't feel the need to be toxic about the changes, since they thought Pokemon was childish. Overall a lot of teens in that time thought Pokemon was childish and you would get bullied in school for liking Pokemon.... So yeah it was propably not as popular for too many toxic people to assemble as in Sun and Moons era. I've been a Pokemon fan for a long time already and on the internet for a while, so I can talk from experience about this, so it's really true that it got worse with the toxic amount of people (which I think is also thanks to Pokemon overall getting more popular XD) But yeah, there were always people that complained in the Pokemon fandom, that's in every fandom, but that doesn't mean that it's sometimes not worse than before ^^'' If you had other experinces, that are different from mine, feel free to share them.
Genuinely I do think it was the best series It dove into serious topics like death, pregnancy, marriage, abandonment, mental breakdowns, it wasn’t shy to stray away from characters crying like- heck even Hau breaks down crying after the final battle & gave him a character. They dove more into Ash’s character too, training his Pokémon & showing it/the effort of it, and it all pays off because he becomes champion for the very first time! It’s genuinely perfect. And the english voice actors sound amazing, they genuinely sounded like they were having a fun time voicing the characters & their line delivery is hilarious at times in a good way. They gave the side characters episodes & characters, and the backgrounds/landscapes are stunning too. I’m so happy they made Team Rocket comic relief because they understood how annoying they were in the previous series. I wish it got more attention because I don’t think people realize how much effort Pokémon really put into this generation, it’s got to be my second favorite generation of all time.
Bro, this is a show for kids, they don't need to see that or learn about that, pokemon is still a show for little people who haven't finished grade school, can't forget that, we may be adult ass nerds who geek out about this franchise cause we grew up with it, but we gotta remember we grew up with as kids, and this will be shown to kids in the future, yes the serious topics are nice spice up to the story and all but the main demographic of pokemon are little children who have yet to start first grade, so I don't know about all that death, pregnancy or stuff in that regard. I do think it's a much improvement on story, and characters than previous generations but heck we cannot forget that this show is for children lol.
@@crossifix2143 if the implementation of the themes of death, pregnancy, etc is done right then it might actually be better for kids. If its done in a respectful and understandable manner for little kids then exposing them to this for the sake of awareness wont end the world. Also a good 60% of the population of pokemon fans grew up with pokemon meaning the anime also needs to grow up in a way, of course the change doesnt have to be crazy but showing a bit of maturity shows that the anime can grow. Of course i can see how tackling these themes for a kids show can be bad because if its done wrongly then it might skew what the kid thinks it means vs what it actually means.
Despite being the goofiest looking series, S&M was quite mature in its tone sometimes. Stoutland and Litten story, then Mallow meeting her mother in the mist was quite emotional. It is maybe the only Pokemon series that talk about death and regrets, hell it even had a marriage
I really love sun and moon I like the setting and how ash made many new friends and family and his team and learned how to relax and finally became champion
Sun and Moon is my favorite and I don't think that'll ever change. It builds all the characters more and you can appreciate everyone of them. It's slower paced and has a more slice of life feel which many people don't get to have. It really builds the world and you can understand it so well. It's slow, you can like all the characters and has interesting stories that you can relate to

One of the biggest changes being that Ash is now stationed to one place being a School, clearly the most controversial changes but the most necessary overall. The Pokemon Anime before has always been travelling making most of the adventure different and easy to get into, but they also make some of the most known pointless fillers since certain towns and characters end up regulated to the episode they appear in. Sun and Moon fixes the Filler problem by introducing characters or locations that eventually revisit, basically world building.
@@natalimoina if an episode introduces a character or location that only appears that episode, and if the story doesn’t have a significant relevance to Ash or his friend’s significant growth, than the episode is considered a filler.
easily half of the episodes in diamond and pearl were filler. I only watched gym leaders, pokemon evolutions, the team plasma stuff, and rival battles, the rest i ignored until the champion. I still didnt miss anything important by the time the show was over. @@HyponMixhog
8:22 "weird animation" You mean art style?? Cause the animation quality itself is objectively fantastic. Also the art style is not a flaw, how much you like the art style is entirely subjective.
The expression on the faces is so memeable, the emotions increase pretty well, and the slice of life is really down to earth and gives characters to bond with Ash and Pikachu.
Also, I like that they didn't shy away with a darker theme such as death. We get tons of them here. First with Stoutland where we see his last moments before his off screen death; Second with Mallow's mom, where it was similar to Stoutland but we also get to see her spirit trying to comfort Mallow; Third with a Trevenant in the episode where Ash got transported to the past and meet him and when he's back to the present time we see Trevenant's dead body; Lastly a Minior is dying right in front of Mamane/Sophocles and it triggered his PTSD because when he was younger he also saw a Minior dying right in front of him.
ngl everything you said I did word for word aswell 😅 especially the part of being around the age of ten and hating the series that “ruined” my childhood show (I rlly like both shows now 🎉)
I actually loved those goofy animations. It was perfect for Alola. My favourite aspect of the series was the dark moments. I never thought that Sun and Moon would overtake Diamond and Pearl to become my favorite Pokémon series!
I loved the kalos region, I’m still young, and when it got off Netflix I ended up watching sun and moon. Don’t remember much about the small amount of Pokémon I watched, but sun and moon was amazing, and everybody needs to go watch it rn
i watched sun and moon on release when i used to be a D1 pokemon fan. now im just an athletic freshman highschooler and pokemon never crossed my mind till i saw this vid. this just flowed all the OG memories back when i used to watch pokemon as a kid ;-;
i think its worth noting that the style of animation changing synced perfectly with the fact that the jump between gen 6 and 7 was a drastically different style as well, in both cases people thought it was strange at first but it ended up cooking for me anime side what changed things for the better was seeing the fire type Z move animated for the first time, at that point i knew the anime was cooking
It feels refreshing to see the "slice of life" style in Pokemon. Me and many others always would've liked to see just the world coexisting with pokemon and how they live their lives. I have a feeling that Sun and Moon was a pretty good contender for that
Sun/moon was a fun change of pace because after many near death experiences why wouldn't he just chill on vacation Journeys was not a fun change of pace because it didn't feel like it respected what came before, and it feels like ash only advances because the plot demands it
@@LycanMOON Originally I did not like sm series because chilling on vacation after losing to Alain and releasing Greninja put bitter taste in my mouth. But I later realized that Alola gave Ash what he missed in previous adventures. Journeys Ash was fusion of XY and SM Ash, which eventually made him on par with other champions.

this was genuinely my childhood, xyz aswell, but mainly sun and moon and tbh it doesnt deserve the hate. its amazing and spoils us with so much content
It reminds me of the transition from the animation of one piece from wano to egghead. A relatively serious tone (pre gear 5th) to a more light hearted one which will go well with gear 5ths whimsical attitude.
Sun and moon will always be my favorite of the series. It was how I got into Pokemon, and also one of the first anime I've watched. It made me so unbelievably happy, everyday after school I would go to watch it and got so giddy every time lol.
It's great to see someone else share some love on the Sun and Moon anime, because I thought that me and my older brother were one of the few that actually enjoyed it. I fell in love with this series and is actually one of my favorites period!
As a kid I remember watching sun and moon on netflix and I was IN LOVE!! This series will always have a special place in my heart. I loved all the characters, pokemons, episodes, plots and sub-plots, the fillers and so on and so on. Like you said it felt so dreamy, relaxing and you could just binge it all at once. By now I've rewatched it 3 or 4 times and it never gets old.
Kukui is the father Ash never had. (That special was their last middle finger) Gladion is everything Alain couldn't be for being a forced spin-off insert. Also he has a role in the whole Aether Foundation storyline.
Pokemon Sun and Moon was actually the last pokemon series I watched as it was on everyday when I got home from middle school and I actually liked it quite a bit
As someone who was there back on that fateful day in 2018 and LOVED XY’s take on Ash being more grown up and portrayed as an older character and being excited to see where they took that I remember just turning off the tv out of outright contempt once I saw the artstyle and knowing the more childish tone they were setting and leaning further into the “Forever 10” route for Ash’s character. But after watching it fully for the first time this past year there are a couple redeeming features that try to compensate for it.
Sun and Moon gave Pokemon a chance to focus on the world, the relationship between people and pokemon in a small and laid back island. We got to see Mallow meet her mother’s spirit! We had Lillie go through one of the biggest developments I’ve ever seen in the anime. Every episode actually mattered and connected to each other. Everyone remembers someone or something that’s happened throughout the series. They never showed a full, clean, proper animation of Komala smacking the school bell, but oh well! I have always waited for something other than some random short on a CZcams to show us just how much deeper the Pokemon world is than “gotta catch em all” or “wanna be the best like no one ever was”. That’s why my favorite part of the anime is when the Pokemon interact with each other or when the episode is only about them! They’re freaking hilarious and awesome without humans! I hope both the animators and GameFreak learn from how much farther they can go, especially if they claim to make a Legends game about urbanizing Lumiose to the point where humans AND Pokemon will benefit and thrive.
Sun and Moon was my introduction to the series (I’m a newer fan, so I’m late to everything), and I don’t think I could’ve had a better one. This show was exactly what I needed at the time, and I’m so glad I found it.
the setup for the sun and moon series was great. much more interesting characters than the x and y companions. Im not usually impressed with battles, but the setup for the league was brilliant. They did some r eally interesting stuff in those fights
sun and moon will always be my favourite. i have so many memories watching sun and moon binging it in 2016 summer break 8th grade. damn i miss those days
Sun and Moon was a pleasant surprise to me! I was in the camp of XY fans that was initially against the direction SM went, and put of watching the show for years! I finally decided to stop procrastinating and binged the whole series this past fall. And MAN it was absolutely worth it! I don't think i can explain my love for this series any better than the points you bring up in this video. In my opinion, XY will always have a special place in my heart due to nostalgia, but SM narrowly beats it as my favorite era of the anime!
My only major complaint with SM is that Guzma did not get a well paced storyline spread out throughout the series. What we got was good, but it was a do and one thing crammed in at the last minute. Guzma was a character that had such a traumatic and extensive back story with Kuku, but we did not see it fleshed out in the anime. Guzma and his golisopod were straight up RUBBED of the tramatic, drama filled story and development they deserved. How come we never got to see Guzma's and Kukui's childhood rivalry? How come we never got to see how Guzma and wimpod met? How come we never got to see glimpses into Guzma's tragic homelife? (I know that would be pushing the limits on what is allowed in a kids anime, but this is the series that had stoutland die, so they come have worked around it somehow). By the way I love golisopod as much as you love goodra. So Guzma only appearing in one episode before the league and then having his entire story squeezed into the league was very disappointing
Sun & Moon is what got me back into Pokemon after I mostly dropped out during gen 4. It had so much charm and Alola itself always feels like such a nice region. After finishing it, I tried a few episodes of Journeys with a friend but I dropped out of that after 3 episodes.
omg i watched sun and moon right when it came out, i was obsessed with xy n xyz so i thought it would be really good, it was, and i loved it. I remember seeing those little mcdonalds ads about getting those little z rings and stuff. I loved this series so much and its so nostalgic 😭😭😭
I blame Disney for the lack of views. Plus the Passimian episode was skipped for Ash’s face paint to play with the other Passimian. I bet Cartoon Network would have never skipped that episode.
Are you stupid? No cartoon network would never have aired that episode because unlike disney, they wouldn't have the money to pay the lawyer fees when they get 17 lawsuits in the first day.
I loved sun and moon so badly, me and my siblings would sit down yapping up every detail and secret that we found in the past episodes. I personally loved season 2, it was peak of sun and moon. Seeing necromeza in his light form was hype. Same for the students riding solgaleao and lunala. I forgot a lot about sun and moon. My secret favorite part was the parallel universe. Sun and moon is a giant memory that can make anyone cry

And probably the darkest one is when Ash got to a different universe where Alola has turned into a post apocalyptic country thanks to Guzzlord. They didn't show it but tons of people and pokemon most definitely died there during the invasion.
@@gdottothegamer1001That's not even going into Stoutland, who had multiple episodes where we got to know him before he passed away.
I think being the goofy series allowed the sad moments to hit harder, also having his non pikachu main pokemon backstory not being about being abandoned by his trainer helps

Aint no way mans said that 💀

D/P and XYZ are the best by a fucking planet
On thing I did like about SM is that we actually see Ash training his pokemon more, rather than just the 'we need to win the rematch' type training. It's a nice change to see training tackled as personal growth, like with rockruff and litten, rather than just objective achievement.
That's a good point, true! ^^ Yeah, agreed!

Bro the first like 5 episodes of xy has this 💀, but every one has their opinion but urs is wrong
@@Shravan-nc8pbYeah, the first freaking episodes. That series slowly just went to "Gotta just rematch and win."
The plane scene had everyone in tears 😭
I cried when stoutland, my favorite pokemon, was shown again with Mallow's episode. That whole backstory is insane, for both characters.
Between Stoutlant and Tapu Fini making everyone see their loved ones again, i was losing it lmao.
And Team Skulls final appearance had me happy crying. Theyre my favorite team for a damn good reason and I still want them back XD
Thats so true dude

Generally, every high-stakes battle could be boiled down to, "Opposing Kahuna/Rival uses their Z-Move (an animation which takes 20 seconds to watch and was probably already re-used 5 times before to save budget), Ash/whoever survives it and does the exact same thing, GG battle over"
I saw all 3!
Dawg sun and moon was great. The intro had me vibing too
I watched it during lockdown in 2020 and it brought me so much joy!
Oh I cried so much the final episode 😂

Sun & Moon was when I noticed that part of the fandom was getting toxic. The show definitely had its flaws & it wasn’t for everyone, but there were people blindly hating/bashing this series and treating XYZ like it was the greatest thing since the invention of fire
I do admit that Kalos is one of the better sagas of Ash’s journey, but it had its flaws too & I’ve started to resent the series after seeing how the XY stans bashed Sun & Moon
So you didn't notice toxic behaviour from time of b&w or when may replaced misty?
@@jjojon7072 I wasn’t really on online forums or engaged with the anime community when May first joined, though BW was more of a problem with the generation as a whole than just the anime
@@Zistheone2 Point is the fandom will always be toxic over things, it didn't start 'getting' anything with s&m.
I've been a Pokemon fan for a long time already and on the internet for a while, so I can talk from experience about this, so it's really true that it got worse with the toxic amount of people (which I think is also thanks to Pokemon overall getting more popular XD)
But yeah, there were always people that complained in the Pokemon fandom, that's in every fandom, but that doesn't mean that it's sometimes not worse than before ^^''
If you had other experinces, that are different from mine, feel free to share them.
I watched this series growing up great to see the attention the pokemon series get the attention it deserves!
w video sun and moon was just such a vibe and a different more chill and humorous atmosphere than the world endingness of xy
I wasn't a fan of the art style at first but it later grew on me. Also love the comedy they grew in there.
Yeah the art style was different but it fit the more light hearted and more comedy focused show
Genuinely I do think it was the best series
It dove into serious topics like death, pregnancy, marriage, abandonment, mental breakdowns, it wasn’t shy to stray away from characters crying like- heck even Hau breaks down crying after the final battle & gave him a character.
I wish it got more attention because I don’t think people realize how much effort Pokémon really put into this generation, it’s got to be my second favorite generation of all time.
ok i hear you but tbh its tied with XYZ
Here me out, ash Greninja, I do prefer XY and XYZ but this is a close 2nd

Pokemon doesn't have filler though
@@natalimoina if an episode introduces a character or location that only appears that episode, and if the story doesn’t have a significant relevance to Ash or his friend’s significant growth, than the episode is considered a filler.

Been a minute since I watched this series, but holy did it have some absolute bangers of episodes
The expression on the faces is so memeable, the emotions increase pretty well, and the slice of life is really down to earth and gives characters to bond with Ash and Pikachu.
Also, I like that they didn't shy away with a darker theme such as death. We get tons of them here.
First with Stoutland where we see his last moments before his off screen death;
Second with Mallow's mom, where it was similar to Stoutland but we also get to see her spirit trying to comfort Mallow;
Third with a Trevenant in the episode where Ash got transported to the past and meet him and when he's back to the present time we see Trevenant's dead body;
Lastly a Minior is dying right in front of Mamane/Sophocles and it triggered his PTSD because when he was younger he also saw a Minior dying right in front of him.

What fateful day in 2018?
sun and moon was one of my favourite pokemon series (other than xyz ofc) its was rlly good because it was simple and fun
YES! Another Kiawe fan! Kiawe is so funny and his rages are the best thing ever. He really puts burning passion into the fire type.
Ikr???? He's one of the coolest characters!
And his Inferno Overdrive's Choreography is one of the greatest thing in his characters imo!
I love it so much it I watch it around 2 or 3 times in the past five years
