- Follow Babylonian priestess and businesswoman Beltani as she investigates who is undermining her barley fields and tavern.
--
It’s 1762 BCE. As dawn breaks in the Babylonian city of Sippar, Beltani- a priestess and businesswoman- receives an urgent visit from her brother. He makes a troubling accusation: her tavern keeper has been undermining the business Beltani relies on in her old age. Now she has just a few short hours to find out the truth. Soraya Field Fiorio details a day in the life of a Babylonian naditu.

The punishment for diluting wine is death by drowning.
*Well that escalated quickly*
And death by burning just by entering the boss' own tavern
I think the logic is it’s sabotaging your business but it’s still pretty unreasonable
I mean in old wild West you will be hanged for stealing horse. Back then luxury items are far more limited in option wine is serious business.
Absolutely
*Dilutes wine with a drop of water*
"So you have chosen death".
The punishment for diluting wine is to get diluted.
Seriously underrated comment. 💯

Yea it basically sounds like it Lol
I really love these "A day in the life of ..." series. We look at civilizations and cultures and often focus on rulers and wars but it's nice to see what the average person did at the time.
I love it too but they are not avarage person, certainly she was not a common folk, she was a naditu.Goodluck trying to find info on daily life of serfs, they were not important and not recorded.
@@YY-ug9mv OK maybe average person is the wrong word but still, nice to see the inner workings of societies

The amount of crimes punishable by death is concerning
Reminds me of that scene from Parks and recreation where the Venezuelan official lists many acts that result in jail time
Are questioning the law
Death by stones
Yup, for instance the Code of Hammurabi is kinda... extreme on punishements. If someone cut your arm, the judge will cut the arm of your aggressor... (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_of_Hammurabi, the french page is more complete, thus the artefact is in Paris) BUT it was one of the oldest record of "weighted" punishment and law in the History. For instance one of the "law" says " if you said you are married, but you does'nt have any contract, it means you are not married". Before that and without written rules... well there was just vendetta, revenge and self-justice.
At that time honesty was paramount, if anyone found to exploit this system by falsehoods or cheat, the consequences would be grave, i.e death.
That's King Hammurabi for you
My history teacher was just about to show us a CZcams video on Babylonians when this popped up in her recommendations. She got so excited she squealed😂
you have a good teacher

@@JellyJam1115 Alterning the scales is still a huge crime too - but prison level not..death penalty 😬
An eye for an eye,
a tooth for a tooth
Drowning for diluted wine,
Death for altered weights
Burning for entering the tavern...damm proportionality went out the window
Imagine if such laws were still present and actually applied.
*Death tolls rise to 100%*
Just don't dilute the wine lmao
We'd live in a better world. Greed can only be stymied by death
In those days people were less selfish and more socially organized, except for the leaders.

These “day in the life” vids are some of my favorites on the channel. History textbooks love to focus on kings or wars, while neglecting the average person.
This has more drama than most tv shows today. I love it.
I love it too!
And she still had enough heart to prevent her brother from getting killed. Raising the bar for us all, truly.
This is a pretty normal reaction though. I wont speak for everyone, but I personally wouldnt want a sibling dead just for cheating me
Babylonian: does something a little shady
Babylonian authority: so you have chosen... death.
Yep
☠️
I don’t know why it took me years of watching their history videos to realize that they probably always place their fictionalized historical people during the reign of relatively well-known leaders because that’s the time period that we probably know most about.
So true
As Assyrian, it always makes me happy seeing videos about the history of Babylon and Assyria, Thanks Ted-Ed
Agreed.

I love how represented women were at the time, which is truly amazing. Especially when you take into consideration the fact that in ancient Rome, some 1500 years later, women still didn't have as many rights.
In practice, Roman women did have similar right.
I mean they literally said family assets usually go through men
'Burnt if she entered the tavern'...
Buy these rights were only really given to high class women sadly
Came for the lesson, stayed for the drama.

0:17 , the fire, that's the most satisfactory animation on Earth. I can watch it whole day long.
We need a movie or streaming series based on Ancient Babylon.

Thank you so much for making these “day in the life” videos! They are so educational and give a great aspect of past types of living.

Beltani's brother was lucky. She tempered justice with mercy.
Looking forward to more A Day In The Life vids in future! ❤

The content of the channel is wonderful in all its forms, and all the videos are great and teach others. I love this channel. I learn from stories and interviews, and the most important thing is the English language is really beautiful. I hope that you will make the Arabic translation available in the next video so that we can learn the language as soon as possible. Thank you.
I LOVE the animation for this ep! From the omen bit to the sundial wrist watch! These shorts remind me of educational cartoons that the teacher would put on! Props to the animators & to TED-Ed!

I have read somewhere before that inequality between men and women arised in the ancient civilization when the need for work force also grew because of wars and farm works. The need for children were great because of work and so women were then forced give birth and stay at home because of their small kids. By that time, women were treated as economic properties and the inequality began.
Thanks, this was amazing
These stories are mentally scarring me
Thank you, Ted Ed
This series has some episodes that are really exciting to watch and understand - they tell you fiction embroidered into reality; it's like watching a historical fiction novel unravel the mysteries and the adventures.

Regarding the capital offense of diluting your product...
Beer and wine back then were literal currency. So in a sense, watering it down or otherwise tampering with it is akin to counterfeiting.
Wow the animation is so cute.. I love it 😘
