A day in the life of the oracle of Delphi - Mark Robinson

- Follow Aristonike, an Oracle-in-training in Delphi, as she studies to become the Pythia and communicate Apollo’s will and prophecies.
--
As the sun rises over Delphi in 500 BCE, Aristonike hurries to the temple of Apollo where a single oracle known as the Pythia communicates Apollo’s will. Reserved only for women, this is the most important job in the city- and one that Aristonike will soon have to take on if city council officials decide she meets their standards. Mark Robinson outlines a day in the life of an Oracle-in-training.

One famous oracle from the delphi given to a man is:
"You will go, you will return not in the war shall you die" where the meaning changes if you put the comma before or after not.
That's why, in MACBETH, Shakespeare teaches us not to believe in ambiguous prophecies. 'Just know yourself' and 'nothing in excess' are perfectly portrayed there. ❤️❤️

That's why they had cakes as sacrificial offering. Because of the munchies.
We honestly don't really know exactly if they were volcanic fumes. All we know is that some cool smokey fumes would come up whenever she prophesied
The truth about the Oracle's insight is that her chamber was situated above a sulfer deposit. The fumes would rise into the chamber, and the oracle would breathe them in, causing some hallucinogenic properties. Much of what the Oracle would say would be gibberish, and her interpreters would repeat these insights in more comprehensible Greek.
Enter the creativity chamber for insight
too bad they didn't have LSD back then
I'm not sure that theory of the sulfer deposit is proven - apparently, the "explanation of a chasm that emitted gas is not seen in the source material until the first century BC. This allusion seems to appear in the later sources, many of which were written by Christians who aimed to dismiss 'pagan' rituals and traditions such as the Oracle." Not saying the Oracle wasn't high on something, though xD

Guy who traveled over 1,000 miles to hear if his country should go to war: makes sense
This is not how it happens dude . Though it is ambiguous but has a deep rooted meaning unlike the words you have written that makes no sense whatsoever.
@@Sanjaykumar-zr8my Umm no, it didn't have a deeper meaning it was just make-believe; I mean, the oracles didn't really come in contact with the gods nor they were highly educated or had any particular set of skills, so they weren't really fit to give very important or very precise advices/premonitions
@@Sanjaykumar-zr8my I didn’t mean any offense with this! I understand that this is not how it happened, I was simply trying to make a joke about it.
@@pizza4stagioni just because it was a religious occurrence to gods not believed to exist today doesn’t mean there weren’t deeper meanings within what was said. The human mind of the oracles were not separate from the religious aspect, and it obviously took some thinking and maneuvering of the given message to make it make sense.
@@foamandfog3112 Pay attention; what the Oracle were saying might have make sense, but there was no deeper meaning to it for the reasons I explained earlier; also, stop caring about other people emotional distress, you made a joke and wether someone gets offended by it or not you're better off not caring; bye 👋🏻

I've seen some people claim it was just "winging it" but this overlooks the craziest part. Some other prophetic gods, such as Dionysus, communicated through "ritual insanity" which involved getting drunk and thrashing around. The gods bleed gold blood that's poison to mortals called the ichor but nobody ever puts that in Greek mythology based fiction. I feel like we're missing out on a great story where a Kratos-like hero tries to kill a god but nearly dies as the ichor seers his flesh. That would be epic.

This series is the best! Its so cool to see the point of view of many interesting people with varying cultures and traditions
It's strange thinking of "ancient Greek religion" as a confusion of ancient stories, superstitions, and a myriad of rituals multiplied by hundreds (if not thousands) of _little cultures,_ but they all had some aspects that kept them spiritually unified, so much so that their religion could resemble modern organized faiths.

I searched up everything that the oracle said, and while some were definitely ambiguous, a lot was just straightforward and surprisingly a lot came true

People of Ted Ed,
Once more a fantastic video. Loved every minute of it. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The idea of consulting an oracle has always been part of human history and continues with us today. We all like guidance and many of us wish someone would tell us what to do. Some people speak to therapists, some turn to more mystical methods and many more turn to friends and family. We all crave guidance and that has never changed and will never change.
What happened to the previous Oracle after she gives up her spot?
She ded
Yeah, I would have liked to hear both what happened to the previous oracle, and what WOULD have happened if the observer said "nope this girl can't be the next oracle"
...Because two can keep a secret, when one of them is ded. Do anyone know how State-run religions work? The old lady retires and failed candidates (candidates the rich rulers don't like) go back to work menial labor at the temple.
I have learned in Latin class that some oracles (not sure if it was the Oracle of Delphi) were forced to take in some drugs and through states of forced delirium or epilepsy, they would give their prophecy. Like a lot of women got abused in this profession...
oh
So cool! Great video.
