I totally agree. Just last week I did a 5 day dopamine detox in an isolated cabin in the woods. No screens or internet, just my guitar, books, and nature.
I find going for a short walk outside first thing in the morning (especially during sunrise) helps get over that initial urge to go on my phone or computer. And then I put in a couple hours on the guitar and my day is set up for success before 9am :)

With transcribing, I really recommend learning to sing the line perfectly before you even pick up your instrument. And the neat thing about this, you can work on this on the bus, at the supermarket, in down moments at work. Use an app to loop the phrase, slow it down, just get it in your ear and try to sing along. Then, when you get to your instrument you'll be able to pick it out in no time.

Your videos are entertaining, informative, and inspiring all at the same time, they make we want to practise and to improve, and that it might actually be possible to make some real progress.

Over the last couple of years I have been gradually getting up earlier and earlier to create me time for my music. I am also a language teacher. I now get up a 5:30am and spend an hour on a transcription then explore other things I am working on. I journal, compose and read in that time also. I try not to look at a screen although I do use a transcribe tool on the computer for listening to the material but avoid browsers and don't use my cel phone.
Transcription and internalizing the music (playing by heart) are the keys to becoming the best musician you can be. Music is a language, it comes from the same place that we generate language, it goes in in the same way and those that know how we learn language (not using grammar), that is, intuitively, know that listening and internalizing leads to acquisition and the language emerges on its own over time. It takes more time to learn a language than we are prepared to accept, and the same is true of music. Both journeys, even your native language, are lifelong.

Such truth! I learned to play the head to Donna Lee just recently, and the click really happens when I try to create a chord melody with it, just like I had with the more intuitive Misty a long time ago. It’s so important to learn these classic melodies as it is to contextualize them in the harmonic structure. Very enlightening and I’ll be bringing this to my practice in the day getting ready for a gig Friday. Thank you!

Thanks Tina ! I LLEERRVVEE this video. It's great to see and hear reality and honesty. There always has been a lot of BS around about applying Music to Guitar - and so many 'guitar owners' get sucked in by it. I truly believe that many people think that learning to play guitar is the same as learning to work a lawn mower - just show them 'the trick' and away they go !

Fantastic advice. In university I worked as an understudy for a professor that was studying the brain. Brain health is so often ignored. The best thing to battle Alzheimer's and dementia is to learn something completely new. Our area of study was the brain and learning. I have learned so many things quickly by using the techniques I learned working with my neuropsychology professor.

So much great advice in here. Thank you for posting such a heartfelt discussion of the thing that I’m sure is on the minds of many these days. I often wonder how good a musician I would be if I could get back those hundreds of hours of doom scrolling and invest just half of it practicing.

  • @thedustykeratometer8570

All good points. I have a big heavy orchestral music stand like yours and added another shelf to it for reference material and pieces to work on next. Have everything nearby- no excuses. When I learn a new piece, at first I just learn which string(s) and fret(s) to play. Once I get that down I focus more on the timing and expression. I take comfort in Beethoven saying hitting the wrong note is no big deal but to play without passion is unforgivable. It’s a journey.

I completely agree. Right now I'm transcribing Peter Bernstein solo on Lady Bird and it has been going good because I do it with discipline. 30min everyday...

I’m 68 now lol finally and I played Bass for 50 years but took about 20 years off as life and work and family happens. Now for the last 5 years I picked up a Classical Guitar. I thought it would be a good retirement project instead of doing crossword puzzles. I decided not to be a great reader and use my ears instead. Also I dabble in Tab and CZcams for help, that’s how I found you. My only problem now is trying to remember all the Tab music I learned. I have to work harder😢Thank you for the time you give.Keep on Keeping on.

  • @kingofskateop
    @kingofskateop Před 3 měsíci

Transposing and transcribing are practice methods that everybody does (very mechanical). However, the main practice involves listening to a lot of music. Also improving yourself in other areas besides guitar (such as hobbies, other instruments, etc.). Playing guitar while doing another activity like watching a TV show, etc., constitutes unconscious practicing. Playing anything all over the fretboard comes from your heart, even if it's nonsense or random notes. Learning the things that you "really" like is also crucial. And the most important thing is to try to play what you want to play in your head, expressing your thoughts or the things you hear in your head directly. These will enable you to create your own style and know what you want to play.

I have a cd player that can be set to repeat the same few seconds of a recording forever. After I figure out the first few seconds I set it to repeat a few seconds later in the recording that repeat forever. I just keep going until I figure everything out - one loop at a time.

I use a 12.9 iPad for all my music. Never on my smartphone. Peace’s that I find hard I print them out and it works so well. I play by not looking at the music and not looking at the fretboard. I meditate by trying to seeing the nots in my head. Thanks.

When I hear a tune I write the notes down A C D A CC DC then i see if i can write it out musically . Are they 8th notes then go to next idea GAG AGECAG notes are going down then write timing, Even if you write the letter you can all always go back and play them. IF you have it written you can play it later on . START with major pentatonic scale

I have a theory regarding those who want to learn jazz but don't listen to jazz. A combination of wanting to learn tasty and difficult licks, also the ability to play jazz tunes for "musical bragging."

I need to find a teacher with your attitude.
For slowing down tracks- REAPER (a free* DAW) is a good option. You don’t have the usual distractions as a phone. Plus you can use the metronome or add a drum track for your practice routine. Don’t open a web browser 👹
