Guitarist, session musician, educator and composer Nick Granville has worked with artists as diverse as Chris De Burgh, Ronan Keating, Delta Goodrem, Steve Smith, Mike Stern, Joey Defrancesco, Eric Marienthal, Kurt Elling and with the band on New Zealand's "Dancing with the Stars". Nick leads his own groups that play regularly including at the major jazz festivals in NZ and he is a founding member of the Wellington Jazz Orchestra. Thanks! We had it tough for a while too. Intense lockdown; Basically the country completely shut except supermarkets and even then they were cut right back. It worked and we got back to life as normal soon enough except gigs took a while to come back - but now are. So glad we took this action and I honestly feel so sorry for others living through this. Love it Nick. I played with one of the cheap newer AR models for a while - great, but my god it was heavy. Then I got lucky and picked up an 80s AM50 which has been A++
Honestly with Scofield, Monder, Muller and more having played AS200s, it was a series that I always wanted. Good to hear the JSM lives up to the reputation of the line.

I have a JSM10 and soon after buying it second hand had Lollar Imperial pickups installed which made all the difference. The originals just didn't cut it but the JSM10 is the lower end model. It plays like a top end axe since fitting the Lollar Humbuckers.

Hi Nick - great video and playing - I have an JSM20 (cheaper model) but have it set up real nice now and it's my main gigging axe. I have a whole raft of other high end instruments, but the sound I can get out of the Scofield is to die for - right from Steely Dan to Jazz to Funk to middle of the road rock . Keep up the great work 🙂

Great to see you back on CZcams, Nick. You inspired me to buy a JSM100 a few months ago, but I couldn't find one in Oz for love nor money. I finally settled on an Ibanez AS93, and although it might be considered a poor man's JSM100, I absolutely love it - a very versatile instrument, reasonably priced, and really well made.

AS93 has the same pickups as today's JSM100, AS200, AS153. They all have that great sound.
@@TropicalLatitude Apparently, there are subtle differences in the Super 58 pickups fitted to the various Ibanez guitar models. Regardless, I'm very happy with them, which is what really matters!
@@TropicalLatitude Same here: I bought an AS93 (blue sunburst) in 2014. I didn't need it, but I wanted it (if you know what I mean). I already had a semi-hollow-body Epiphone Sheraton II. But the Super 58 pickups and the great neck made the Ibanez better than the Epiphone. I also noticed that the centre-block was much lighter on the Ibanez, so if gives it more of a hollow-body vibe than the Epiphone. So, I can imagine that the JSM100 would sound similar but likely even better (AS93 has maple/nyatoh neck, JSM100 has mahogany neck).

Hey Nick, don't forget that Metheny also has his synth guitar and the pikasso guitar, various steel strings, the soprano and tiple. Sco uses his Martin acoustic, Tele and a 330. Frisell has dozens of gats. Also Rosenwinkel, Kreisberg and Lage Lund. Also you're sounding great!!
Thanks man! Yep, they all had many guitars but were known for one in particular. Metheny it’s the 175 is his axe. Sco the AS200, Frisell the Tele, Wes the L4. etc etc. I’ve thought about this a lot and I’m going to try to stick to the jsm100 as much as possible (famous last words!). Ha. Hope you’re well mate

Great video I really enjoyed listening to your playing. I have just bought a well used AM50 made in Korea 1990. It is so easy to play and it sounds great to my ears. But I couldn't work out why the lower two knobs and pots were missing, thanks for solving the mystery 😂

I have the AS153 which is very similar and also shockingly good. Im a strat player normally but this is just such and incredible instrument that it too is now my number one. Other than a fairly minor neck set up, I've changed nothing. Its a lifer for sure. Thx.

What's thie difference between the two? They look almost identical.
I also have an AS153 although highly modified. I love it. I didn't modify it because I was dissatisfied with it. I just made it my own.

A Kiwi guitar player - I love it......seriously a talented musician and guitar player. I love all my guitars and amps, which I only have because I love them! Semi-hollow body guitars? I have an Epiphone Sheraton 50th anniversary model from 2012 that I love, they shipped the husk (body w/neck attached) to Gibson, where the hardware and electronics were installed, including mini-humbucker pickups that sound wonderful. It hasn't been getting played in awhile, so I need to get it out............!

I have the cheaper JSM and it is my favorite guitar I've ever owned.. and I've owned/own a lot. The magic, IMO, is the pickups - super articulate and versatile. Great neck too of course.
I am also convinced that if you want to save yourself 100 - 1500 dollars, it is not worth getting the JSM100 as it is the exact same pickups - just the difference in fancy body and neck woods which I can't tell a difference in at all.
They are superb pickups. No doubt. The JSM100 is a step up but it’s down to each person if it’s worth it to them. For me it is, as I do this professionally. But for many a 5% gain for a significant more cost isn’t worth it. That’s why it’s cool they offer models at all levels. Thanks for watching!

I just purchased the AS73 , my first guitar was an Ibanez grx40. 27 years later I’ve returned to the Ibanez.

i own an epiphone dot 335 which is my favorite guitar. it sounds just better than all my others, so i always come back to it.
i also think it has nice high frequencies that the others don't have.
i also like the middle position best.
is it coincidence or is this just what a 335 does?
Nice! Yeah I think that mid position on most 335 type guitars is the sweet spot

Thanks! The AZ is a completely different beast. To me the AZ is a super versatile rock guitar, and I use it as such. I don’t really feel funk music or jazz on it, but it can certainly do those things. The JSM100/AS200 is my favourite Ibanez guitar period.

nice ar420! i had one many years ago, it was a great guitar. in fact, it's why i bought the ar325 i have now. nearly identical guitar. it's my #1, even over my les paul. the super 58s are easily as good as any gibson pick up, and i would argue, better than some of them.

You mentioned adding strap locks. The strap button screws on my JSM100 are too wide to fit any strap locks I have tried. Is there a particular brand you are using? Enjoyed your video.
Oh man, I can’t remember what brand they are. I installed them a long time ago. An easy fix if the screw holes are too big is put a tooth pick in there with some super glue (or any glue) and that’ll close up the hole a little. Reinsert the screw. easy as. Or get a luthier to do it if you’re not confident, it’ll take them no time or effort. Strap locks are worth it (cause it sucks if a guitar hits the floor).
More fusion or jazz stuff would be great

i have an 81 .... lucky me !!! it needs a refret, and the neck is a bit large for me , but the sound is fantastic !!!

A 72 Fender Telecaster Thinline is worth checking out , the dual Humbuckers have a warm tone .

Your comment at the end about buying one good guitar early on rather than buying and selling to upgrade over time struck a chord with me. I have concluded the same thing. However, there is a learning aspect to those stepping stone guitars: you learn what you like and dislike. I just didn't know enough to know then what I know now and I had to go through those intermediate guitars to know what my Holy Grail is. (Actually, it may be the JSM100!)
Good point. I’ve learnt a lot by buying and selling. And I’ve also learn the hard way that I should have just gone all in and bought the best instead of a stepping stone as it’s cheaper in the long run
Agreed, I have had several guitars, and it took me quite a while of playing before I could even tell if a guitar would remain comfortable to play. Now, I know that I feel at home on my PRS SE. I have tried some really expensive guitars since, but nothing feels better or even comfortable. If I had decided to buy one quality guitar from the get-go, I would probably bought a LP, and now I know that I just don't get along well with them.
Hey Nick, I have an '78 Performer PF300NT, '82 Artist AR305AV, '83 George Benson GB10NT, '83 Artist AM205AV, so yeah, I am all in on Ibanez. Only my bespoke-built (Bryant) Michael Guitar, designed by my childhood BFF Willie Carter that he gifted me has broken my longtime Ibanez spell. It is sort of an offset S style, but it is 24.5" scale with 24 frets, single neck pickup (Fralin). It took me a moment to get used to it, but I really like it now. After leaving Santa Cruz Guitars about 15 years ago, Willie launched his own bespoke acoustic guitar company called Carter | Poulsen Guitars $8700 starting price.
If I may suggest, you need to find a throw rug to cut down the echo in your studio. It really impacts the quality of your spoken word portions of the video. Good luck ramping up the channel!

Hi Nick! I see that you changed the Gotoh tailpiece on your JSM100. I’m curious why? I have an issue with a metallic buzz on my g-string and have a feeling it has to do with the tailpiece…
It’s the original bridge that came on the guitar - my jms100. This was made in 2008 so maybe they changed later on? Or there are other versions, the JSM10 I think might be a different bridge? If there’s Metallic buzzing it’s probably more likely the nut and something to do with a fret. Take it to a good luthier and they’ll be able to sort it im sure

Have to totally agree w you per the AS200, Nick. I'm a player and teacher in LA, have owned probably every desirable vintage guitar ever made, at least pretty close. Years ago went thru a $ change (= drought) and had to start all over on a minimal budget. Had to figure out - for once - what did I really need as opposed to wanted. Picked up a cheapie ESP tele and upgrade the pups, fabulous guitar. My friends with old teles envy it. Picked up a clean '89 AS200, never changed a thing, excellent guitar, as you say a real workhorse. '58 pups are like Seths. Like a 335, but much more variable in tone and plays like a dream. I have the AS 93 and it's more or less similar to this one.. As far as I know, the pickups, body shape and neck are the same or at least very close.. Playing it, I was very happy since the neck is very comfortable, it sustains well, it's affordable and I was wondering what would a much more expensive ES 335 add more or different since those super 58 pickups are excellent..

Yeah may have to buy myself a JSM10, can't quite afford a jsm100 japan model yet. But the JSM10 look pretty good as do the mexico guitars now from fender. Still want the jsm styling though, that's important. Regardless looking pretty good.

Hi. Just to offer my humble opinion as an owner of both a 2021 Mexican Fender strat and a 2023 Ibanez JSM10, the super 58's really are killer pickups and the fretwork from the factory is magnitudes of order superior on the Ibanez vs the Mexican strat. Granted the cost of the Ibanez Isa bit higher, but I think it's worth it. Take care
Great video. ....I'm trying to decide between the Ibanez JSM100 and JSM10 models. There's about a $1700 difference. Anyone have any experience comparing these two models to each other. The less expensive JSM10 has a maple top, similar to other popular ES335 models, and the JSM100 has Anigre top and sides. Does anyone have experience between the models, tonally? I know some of the price difference has to do w/ the country of production but I'm interested in the tonal differences...Thanks!!
Thanks! The JSM10’s are good esp for the money. There is definitely a difference though and worksmandhip is only part of it. But if you can stretch the budget to the 100 it’s worth it. I’ve had so many times in the past where I’ve gone for the cheaper option on things only to sell it and buy the one I should have bought in the first place.

Hi. Since getting the AR520 (about 4 months or so ago) it’s been my number 1, and pretty much all I play - unless I need something specific. I still love my JSM but the 520 just suits my style better, is more comfortable, more versatile and ultimately a guitar I resonate more with. Thanks for watching
@@NickGranville Interesting - especially considering it's and $800 guitar compared to a nearly $3k guitar. Is the playability comparable? The AR520 has a bit of a thinner neck, right?
Yeah, for me the monetary value of an instrument isn’t important. It just has to do what I want from it. The AR520 just feels right to me, and I did a lot of searching to get to this point. The next is slightly thinner but it’s very comfortable and in no way a thin neck. It’s a maple neck too so very strong. I just like the guitar for what I do it works. The JSM100 is amazing though. Cheers

latest version jsm100 is Anegre. it is brighter, more mids than mahogany.

Hi. It’s great for clean tone stuff. The neck pick up is easily warm enough to do a jazz gig.

Yes, much better IMO. Esp for the money. A really good vintage 335 would beat it, but that would beat most all guitars - but is unobtainable for most people including me. So, can’t beat the JSM100 for a 335 type guitar IMO

Why are the vintage 335s so much better than new ones?
Hi. The vintage guitars weren’t all great. But the ones that are just had something special about them. I think instruments get better with age, and also if they’re played a lot they wear in nicely. Also they used better materials back in the day (like Brazilian rosewood which isn’t available now), and the worksmanship was great. Generally just better all around - but at a cost
I do like the heritage guitars which I’ve played. But I think the sco JSM100 is better - it’s the best 335 type guitar in this price range (eg not vintage). But as always I suggest you go try guitars in person cause no two are exactly alike. Cheers
