    Tina!! You’re simply the best, better than all the rest. One thing that stops me from progressing is, finding new concepts or systems, or ways of playing a tune and thinking that this will be the one thing that will solve all all your problems. And after a while of studying that thing you start noticing that it’s not working out. What I found out from experience is that, there’s not one thing that will make you a great jazz guitarist. Like you said, you have to stick with one thing long enough to “master it” and then move on to the next. There are many things involved, we have to master arpeggios, triads, scales, chords, ear training, inversions, all over the fretboard, rhythm , etc… your playing will the combination of all things you have worked on. Cheers Tina, excellent stuff once again

      yes i think so too! there is not one thing that will turn my playing around but many small steps and being consistent😊

    Great advice! Really!
    There is so much info and stuff to learn out there. The points you mention will help me and alot of people take it all in.
    Enjoying the process is the most important I think. Kind of forgot that for a decade or so... Glad to have found it again.

    great video for right now. I just got back from a jam with my drummer buddy and was reflecting afterwards on the weird spot my playing is in, wanting to play a million notes but sometimes or often overplaying and not thinking much about integrating my technique consistently as I'd want to while improvising. I feel myself cramming so many ideas and over-noodling. good to hear your reflections on this.

    I'm so glad I found this channel. So much wisdom here. I think a lot of guitar players - including me - are held back by that kind of "inferiority complex" you allude to where they hear/see someone playing effortlessly and with complete freedom, and assume they should just be able to do the same naturally because it sounds and looks so "natural". We don't realise the amount of practice and dedication that goes into it. It has nothing to do with "talent" and everything to do with passion and dedication. I think the key to improving is being secure with where you are as a musician, having clear goals to improve, and enjoying the journey. Thank you Tina for your great content!

    It would have been so useful with this kind of information when I started playing guitar many years ago. This is absolutety of high value. Thank you Tina.

    There is so much material, so much musical excellence, but also so a lot of sloppy show-off culture out there, it can get overwhelming and confusing for any amateur. Thank you for bringing this professional and grounding perspective to the conversation! It's all about enjoying the process and making music. I've spent many years learning stuff merely by muscle memory (through tabs). It's a rush at first to play cool-sounding riffs and lines, but at some point the realization sets in that you've practically been pressing buttons like a trained monkey. I had to grow up quite a bit and play with a few people to now tackle the music theory etc. and the slow grind for real.

    23:14 spot on! Thats what’s awesome about jazz is the few takes (1 to 2 maybe 3) they would record in the golden age.

    playing electric guitar with your fingers, unless it's a rhythm piece like say love yourself or something like that is sacrilege. At least learn hybrid. So many better sounds you miss out on especially when that dynamic occurs when striking the string.

  • @musicetc2063
    @musicetc2063 Před 2 měsíci

    I'm hearing ideas of remembering we can't master something all in one day, but playing more thoughtfully and musically and slower will practice intentionality, which is so much more important than playing fast. our speed improves the more we play, but playing fast with intentionality is so important to practice gradually; it can't be rushed. things will show up in our playing after some time, and soon, but so important to practice it slowly and right so that we don't learn new bad habits along with it. tonight improvising with my friend I felt myself playing out some stuff that I'd rather just not play, finding myself chromatic noodling or trying to play and jump to as many arpeggios as possible and just be fast. listening back, there were some cool fast moments, but a lot of good moments of dynamics, slower playing, chord progressions and voice leading that was more delicate, and that stuff felt more profound and intriguing, more inspiring. eventually working up dynamically to the fast stuff happened and the slower dynamics allowed for much better build and feeling, and experiencing range, contrast, and emotional resonance.

    Metheny plays with fingers alot. Jeff Beck used his fingers as well. i never finger picked for 25 years. then started playing some Leo Kottke and others and finger picking is a must.

      I don't know if the style originated with Joe Pass, but he certainly made it popular with the Virtuoso albums. He uses pick and fingers. Wes Montgomery didn't use a pick. Kurt Rosenwinkel has said in gear interviews that he uses effects to eliminate the sound of the pick on the string. It seems like it's a matter of the sound you want and what gets you there, not so much whether it's a must-know technique. I prefer to play with a pick, but I don't do much chord-melody stuff yet.

  • @gtrplyrgrl512
    @gtrplyrgrl512 Před 2 měsíci

    I don’t like the plasticky sound of a pick against the strings. The pads of my fingers make a warmer sound. But I’m open to changing my mind.
    Jazz is definitely not easy. Knowing the grammar of improvisation: Metheny knows what he’s talking about.
    All excellent points to embody. Thank you!
