Have you had a passenger on it? I’m interested in this bike but must be comfortable for my wife. I think they have a back rest available as well? Have a vfr800 right now and it’s good for having her on back but a backrest would make her way more comfortable
@@2wheeladdict12 the pillion seat is very slippery and she will always slide to the front, I suggest replacing it with something more plush and maybe alcantara.
Very interesting. I recently purchased a 2021 SX on the first weekend in September. Traded in my big Kawi Voyager and got a good deal. How I've missed a sportier tour and the engine just has power whenever you need it.
I bought an Air Hawk DS for longer rides to keep my butt comfy (the stock Voyager seat really is a thing of beauty and will be missed by my behind).
While the Voyager was great, after two seasons of riding I wanted to get back into a sportier ride. So far I'm not disappointed.
Sure it's a fantastic motorcycle, I bought mine in the spring of 2021 and am completely taken by it.

Just sub'd. We have a lot of similarities, brother. I've owned two ninja 1000 's... currently own two bikes...cbr600rr..which I absolutely enjoy...IMHO, an extremely under rated motorcycle...and a dyna wide glide. Been riding 40yr..it's my passion n hobby.

Nice review. Some other reviewers have noted the clunky quickshifter when down shifting in addition to the handlebar and foot peg buzz at higher rpms that you noted.

Just picked up a, new to me, 20' N1K. One owner with 6k miles. Came with the factory panniers and heated grips. Coming from a 18' Triumph Street Triple RS it was a nice change for my old bones. Turning 60 I was looking for something to eat up miles but still be sporty.
The bike ticks all the boxes for me. Love the low end grunt and the top end rush when you get up over 8k. Great brakes and comfortable ergos and the thing just flicks around with ease. Heading out for the first tour tomorrow and plan on covering about 2000 miles GA, AL, TN, NC and VA.

Awesome video! I considered buying the Ninja 1000 after owning a 2019 Ninja 650. I ended up getting a CBR1000RR as well, although not the RR-R Fireblade. Great review and nice mods!

I plan on getting a low mileage used SX this summer. Coming from an adventure bike. Don't get me wrong I love my bike but after a few years and as many upgrades within reason to keep reliability it's just too slow. So, I've been researching and reviewing the SX and gonna be looking for a deal soon. Great review! Thanks p.s. I agree, the exhaust is ugly and that will be my first upgrade!!

Love the vlog and review! I'm really sad that most of the manufacturers have abandoned the sport touring segment; coming from a sport(y) bike background it's where I went to first as soon as my eye started wandering further from home. I found that adventure bikes simply didn't do it for me considering I had no intention of going off-road so the various compromises that they made were just downsides to me. I didn't know where to go since Triumph's Tiger Sport and Yamaha's FJR1300 were still available but both looked seriously long in the tooth; Honda had discontinued both the VFR and the Crosstourer / Crossrunner; I tested both BMW's XR bikes and didn't like them... That left me with the Yamaha Tracer 9! Good bike with a great engine but feels really quite budget compared to others.
Glad to see Kawasaki is still carrying the torch for proper sport touring.
Richard Gibson. I just left the 'serious' touring space by parting with my Honda ST1300 after 15 years of ownership. It took me about a year to discover the BMW R1200RS as a compromise. I also loved the Kawasaki 1000SX but felt it was a bit too sporty looking for my 60+ age. :( I was looking for a lighter bike that I could still sit on for long day rides. The RS hit the spot for me. Had I been 10 years younger, I would have gone with the Kawasaki.

Great bike. I got the same one. The full Akro exhaust is awesome - don't stop at the slip on.
I agree...my understanding is that the slip on offers very little in terms of sound and no improvement of performance. But the full gives better sound and some improvement on performance.
You have it, so you would know better than me.
I can't afford the full on my 2020 but I still love the bike.
Heated grips from Kawi are the way to go, all connections are already in place, just have to match them up.
I have a '21 1000sx. It is an absolutely brilliant machine. I added a full Akrapovic exhaust system and the bike became totally sublime- less weight and lots of additional power.

Hi Dan, that's an awesome looking bike. I just went to the kawasaki dealer today and sat on a 2023 sx. Actually I sat on it 3 times. The seat seemed fairly hard to me. Also I was sitting almost up against the fuel tank. I am about 6'1 or 6'2". I wouldn't say that I was cramped, but it seemed a little odd position for touring. I know I can get handlebar risers and I think it would be a little better. I also would have liked a little wider and taller windscreen. I wonder if I should just get a kawasaki concours? I also grew up with Honda. I haven't ridden in at least 45 years or more. Not sure if I want all the weight of the concours. Last week I sat on a Honda cbr 1000 rr. I felt like I was sitting on a mini bike. Don't care for superbike fast anyway. The sx is plenty fast enough to get you into big trouble. I was just wondering how tall you are. And do you think maybe I could get used to this bike, being as tall as I am
I'm 6'1", about 190lbs but even if we are the exact same height and weight, ergonomics and comfort are very unique. I am able to do 500+ mile days on the Ninja, with stock seat and handle bars. That being said, the 1000sx is a "sport tourer"... it still retains a slightly aggressive seating position. If you want a more upright seating position, I would probably look at an adventure bike, before I put bar risers on the ninja (if that's even possible). Just my 2 cents. The Ninja is a great bike for what it is... but its not ADV or touring bike comfortable, there's always a tradeoff.

I had a 2015 Ninja 1000 and just traded up for a 2021. I don’t know what Kawi did to this beast but it is a light year advancement over an already solid bike. If you want to get a better windshield no one seems to make them for the 2021 model. If you order one for a 2015 model they will fit on the 2021. Just uses 4 mounting screws instead of 6 but it does fit. I use the Zero Gravity half bubble, took it off my 2015. I also kept my Sargent custom seat. Had to get a new ring for my SW Motech bag.
Good to know... how much better is the sergeant seat? Any experience with the Kawi extended reach comfort seat?
@@DansADV The Sargent seat is a marked improvement over the stock seat. They will also make a matching cover for the rear seat if you wish. I would wager it is better then the seat you are asking about.
I've traded my 17 for a '20 tourer that I'm still enjoying. The tourer comes with a bigger windshield compared to the stock from kawi.
I got a National Cycle Touring screen that fits the 2021 model, huge improvement!
Road in Wisconsin take some dramatic break up so tarmac wouldn't look like this. Ouchie holes hurt but sured loov to cruze with this dream machine
I got inner bags when I brought the panniers, the performance pack gives you all the parts you mentioned. I’m in the UK
I would have loved the performance pack… I was lucky to even find a standard bike… our dealers have no inventory right now.. all brands… and most accessories back ordered… maybe we’ll get back to normal someday.

Really enjoyed your TMF style review and the references to other bikes are very helpful. You mentioned that one of your other bike is the Africa Twin. Here’s my question. I have a 2020 BMW R1250 GS with which I’ve clocked 40 000 kms in one and half years. I’m very happy with it except for size and weight when it’s not moving. Even getting her off the side stand can be heavy sometimes. I really like the 1000 sx but haven’t been able to test ride it. As you I like spirited rides in the twisties but to get there I have to swallow a lot of motorway miles in which the GS is very capable, indeed. Unlike you I don’t come from a sportbike background. Do you reckon that for travelling (I do several trips a year, in the summer 4000 km+ in the Alps) the 1000 sx would be much less confortable than anAT/GS style ADV bike? I would appreciate your feedback if you’ve got time.

Thanks for watching... cool that you caught the TMF reference... he's great. Comfort is so incredibly subjective, it's really hard to answer. It seems everyone has different ergonomics and pressure points. I'm 6"1, 190lbs. Surprisingly, I find my Africa Twin and 1000sx seating position more comfortable that my Goldwing. The 1000sx has a slightly forward lean, it takes pressure off of my tail bone, allowing me to ride longer. The only down side to the 1000sx is you are pretty locked into one position. Unlike the Goldwing or a GS, you can't move around a lot. It's worth finding one to sit on and seeing how it works for you.
What do you think of the 1000sx’ wind protection? Unfortunately, over here in mainland Europe you need to take them to cover miles to get to more winding roads. Cheers
Another great question.... The wind protection is not as good as the GS. However it does provide "clean" not buffeting air... at least for me. I have not tried the taller touring windshield. With the stock windscreen in the up position I do get full air on my helmet, but again it is clean air. I've had big windscreens on other bikes that buffet, and I hate that. With the windscreen down, I get air starting about mid chest, which is great for hot days.
Thanks for taking the time to answer. It’s true that I get a decent protection from my MRA vario touring screen on the GS, plenty of bugs shattered on it, hardly any on my helmet’s visor or my vest... but my neck gets stiff after an hour at highway speeds. So it will be maybe a trade-off and anyhow I ride with earplugs. I really hope I can test ride the 1000sx for a couple of hours to see if the excitement of a sport tourer compensates for the lack of comfort I would incur if I swap it for the GS. Keep the videos coming
Good review, any buzz at higher Rpm? What is the Rpm at 70 mph speed? Can you show the ergonomics by seating on the bike in front of camera?

Thanks for the detailed review. I currently ride a 2006 VFR 800 and want more power. I am torn between a 1200 VFR and the 1000SX. Since you are a Honda first guy, have you ridden a 1200 VFR? adn how would you compare it to the 1000SX. I do mainly longer trips 4-8 days 4500-6000kms, some around town stuff. I have noticed as I age, that I start feeling like I just got off a horse after day 5....
I believe the VFR1200 was discontinued in 2017... Is that correct? Regardless, I have not ridden one. From reading forums and articles online, the 1000sx seems to be the natural progression from the VFR800 and the bike Honda should have made. It has much of the same feel, but way more power, and all of the modern electronics.
Theres other 2020+ SX1000s with factory heated grips so you can order them with your bike. So they do come with them you just have to pay extra. Same with the quick shifter I believe.

Thanks. Looking for a solo Sport-Tourer. Rode the SX yesterday. Wow! My daily drive is a Concours 14...and we'll keep her for 2-up riding, but I wanted something nimble and quick! About ready to pull the trigger! Do you know if the 21 and 20 are the same, or just different paint?
I believe they only differ in paint. (95% sure :)
There a few changes actuator its a re worked engine, has a new tft screen, a six-axis IMU and uts ride by wire

How is this bike on twisty mountain roads? Does it feel like you can ride somewhat aggressively or is it just way too heavy for that? I’m coming from a ninja 400 and I’m considering either this or the 650.
I love it on the mountain roads. But I'm not able to compare it to a ninja 400, having never ridden one. I imagine the 1000sx will feel big coming off a 400, but the power is addictive. The 1000sx is a sport-touring bike, not a track bike, but it's a great choice if you are touring and love the twisty roads.
Hey Dan. came across your video of the Ninja 1000sx. I made a deal with my salesman today; however, I do have one question as I haven't sat on this bike. Going from a NC50x, which was comfortable just power lacking. How is the seat on this ninja? Thanks and thanks for the info.
I hate to doge the question, but seat comfort seems to be extremely subjective. It is very common to see one professional motorcycle reviewer hate a seat while another loves it. I rode the stock seat on a 2,000 mile trip and it did not bother me... but again it's subjective.

What phone mount are you using? How did you attached to the bars?
A ram mount... it uses the screws that hold the clutch assembly to the bar... pretty easy and clean setup.
Did your bags come as a kit or did you have to order everything separately?

Can you please make a video describing, how is to live with Ninja 1000sx. It’s maintenance periods. Average service costs. It’s hidden features and quirks and so on.
I probably will, once I get a little more time with the bike.
Ive had numerous Ninja machines, plus I started out on a Mach III at 15 years old, long story, half century of riding. I do my own maintenance so having said that, it can be pricy as I used to service bikes as a side job and made very good dinero. Learn to do it yourself, plus if you're in the boonies most likely you can still get home. Never been stranded even on 12k rides. Keep scrubbing the sidewalls....
May I ask why you have a dedicated GPS unit? What are the advantages over a cell phone? Many thanks for sharing
There are not huge advantages... but there are a few small ones... I come from ADV riding, and the vibrations have killed the camera on multiple iPhones. I've also had many dc sockets to USB-c adapters fail on trips. Lastly, the GPS unit works with any and all gloves... My phone doesn't seem to work reliably even with gloves designed to work with phones. The Garmin shows me incoming text and caller ID. It's really personal preference... I have several bikes, and for me, It makes sense to own just one GPS and easily move it from bike to bike.

Sorry, have not carried a passenger. The passenger seat is higher than the driver seat and with the slight forward lean of the driver, I can't imagine it being very comfortable for a passenger. I would guess the Tracer 900 would be more appropriate.

I drove with a pillion, but my bike has a Givi top case with a back pillow. For short trips, less than 200km, my wife didn't complain., my wife didn't complaint.

@@DansADV I have the Akrapovic on my 2020 Ninja, the can is no louder or any more powerful than the stock can , but it’s a damn sight prettier and saves about 3.5 kgs weight 👍
I’ve got just over 11,000 miles on it now and it’s been a really good bike, I bought it as a workhorse for longer trips as I also have a modified 899 Panigale for sportier riding ( the “ showpony “ ) and the Nnja has taken everything I’ve thrown at it in it’s stride 😬
P.S….don’t buy the factory heated grips, they are rubbish!,…too fiddly to set on the move and they are just not hot enough 🤷🏻♂️ , apart from that slight con, a great bike though 👍

I don't go much over 100mph with panniers, but it's stable to there.
Q? can you fit a center stand on it or is a fade out due to design
I've never seen a sport bike with a center stand.... this is a true sport touring bike, I can't see how a center stand would ever fit. I agree they're nice to have, but would not look good or work with this bike. (as far as I know). The bikes with center stands all look more like ADV bikes.

It's been a while since I've been able to pull that off... Certainly can't do it with new bikes. You have to watch Facebook marketplace religiously and be ready to buy bikes that you're not necessarily interested in. Even then, it's getting much harder.
I can not understand for the life of me the facination with Akrpovic exhaust! Yes they are nice yes Titanium BUT the elephant in the room? They cost like DOUBLE for another brand (various) also made of titanium...I dont see any advantage other than maybe it you think it impresses people the same kind of thing as a Rolex or any number of designer brands of whatever...But I mean already if you are riding a Kawasaki? LOL that ship has already sailed....well maybe the H2

My 1998 Kawasaki Concours 1000cc is way more comfortable and better windshield,softer seating and more ergonomic design and shaft drive ! You don't need a 1400 model ! nor a sx model . But they are good bikes ..just not for me ! 👍

I am interested in getting this bike in the spring. My local dealership has 2 in stock. How is the ride position and do you have back pain after a long ride? I commute to work almost an hour each way
Ergonomics are pretty unique to each individual. I found it very comfortable, especially compared to a sport bike. It has a much more upright seating position while still being great fun on twisty roads. However, your legs are pretty locked in, and you can't slide back in the seat to adjust your knee angle. So it is not as comfortable as an adventure bike. See how long your dealer will let you sit on it, other than that it's pretty subjective.
