      @@Royal__Kitsune i have to disagree.
Mario games are still consistently well crafted both in the gameplay and graphical sense. And even if i haven't been a fan of the Breath of the Wild era of Zelda (open world fatigue is real) i could not even pretend to make the argument that the game is "shit" in the same way as the recent pokemon games, everything the game tries to do it does well and functions without any troubles. The Kirby games have been great, Animal Crossing still goes hard, Metroid Dread is easily one of my favorites in the franchise, etc etc etc.
Nintendo does milk nostalgia but with most of the franchises they at least have the decency to make sure that the product is still good, Pokemon is exceptionally poorly made compared to the other games they put out.

Since the games are primarily aimed at a younger demographic, the red-green-blue triangle very quickly explains the concept of type weaknesses in a intuitive way. Throwing my hat in to support Garnt and Joey starting the Trails series. I always heard of Trails in the Sky and Trails of Cold Steel as cult classic RPGs in the past, but I properly gave the series a shot a few years ago and, and it's a wonderful journey. This is the perfect time to jump in as well with them finally pushing out English localizations of the 4th and 5th games (though Joey has the luxury of going through the games in Japanese, which are way further ahead).
It scratches a particular niche for RPG lovers. Definitely not for everybody (Connor definitely won't like them), but the series deserves all the praise it gets.

The thing with Game of Thrones is that the showrunners didn't even run out of books, they just ignored the direction that books 4 and 5 were going in and shoved a few plot points into season 5 while ignoring entire other plot threads (The entire Dorne plotline in the books for example was just thrown out the window, and Young Griff straight up doesn't exist in the show).

He probably didn't finish WOW because there was so many plots and charcter to tie down whit our making it collapse on its self it's almost impossible and probably stressful af..makes me Wonder what will happen if G didn't felt like adding so many new elements ..(still doesn't forgive what the writers did to our cathulu pirate)

Knowing Garnt's tastes in games. I really think he would enjoy the "Trails" series of games. For those who would like to play these games, the structure of games is simpler than what Garnt said. It's really chronological, divided into successives games about (successives) stories arc. For example, the first 3 games are about Liberl arc and the names are trails in the sky 1,2,3.
So the only rule to follow is to pick any of the first game of an arc. You could start with Trails in the sky 1 or you could start with trails of cold steel 1 based on Erebonia empire arc. If you pick the latter, you will be spoiled about Sky arc at some point.
The earlier you pick, the more you will taste world building and enjoy the story but you really can start with any of the 1st game of a story arc. Its really depend how much time you want to spend (Starting from the first game its hundreds of hours)

As another Trails fan voicing in for the franchize, I absolutely agree that it's an amazing JRPG and that the pay-off is definitely here. Garnt explained the premise quite well and it's definitely true that it has some of, if not, the best world-building I've come to know in any JRPG series ever. Literally almost every NPC has a name, its own story, 2 new dialogue options after every major plot point event, is capable of sorting out their own problems and some even reappear across multiple game arcs. You can still meet old NPCs you were used to seeing in the older games in the newer ones on the same spot too!
That being said yeah, as you could probably imagine, the games are very text-heavy, apart from doing fights, some main quests, etc, it consist of a lot of running around cities and actually talking to NPCs (I mean you can skip it and not do it, but I feel like it's such a huge part of the game that if you were to do that, the game is simply not for you). On top of that, with a lot of games to the series and with how the games are designed, I personally find myself having over 100 hours on every single one of these games (some of them even over 200). Now granted I do tend to play my games rather slowly and I'm more of a completionist, it's still definitely a considerable time-investment that you need to account for when you get into it. Pair that up with how the game is and that it has a turn-based combat system (which I absolutely love, but I fully understand its not for everyone), I do get why it may be a hard series to get into.
At the end of the day though, I still believe those absolutely epic moments where various characters get mentions from others you have only heard of up until that moment, when they actually meet and unite across different arcs, interact together, and fight together are absolutely amazing and you will grin from ear to ear after experiencing that awesome adventure.

I was fist pumping so hard from Garnt just mentioning Trails. To the maybe 2 or 3 people that read this, don't let the mention of the 20 minute video intimidate you (there was a bit of trouble in the past where 2 earlier games didn't have English localization, BUT this problem has been fixed.). The series is long, but it tells a linear story across all its games (Japanese release order matches the order of events. It's not hard to follow). For those who don't want to Google anything, the order is Sky games, Crossbell (Zero/Azure), and Cold Steel (and most of them have the decency to be subtitled 1, 2, 3). Every single one of the games are on Steam (and a majority are on nearly every console).
You can play the first game Trails in the Sky FC on a 20 year old laptop. Also, it's dirt cheap. It goes on sale all the time for as little as 10 bucks. Yes, there's an intended (and ideal) order to the games, but it's really not that complicated.
Also, if you're not into JRPGs PLEASE at least listen to the soundtrack. It is one of the best soundtracks out there. Every game in the series has dozens of absolute bangers.

Start with the Trails in the Sky games and just follow the chronological order from there (Sky, Zero/Azure games, then the four Cold Steel games). They're fairly long JRPGs sure, but there's no need to rush through. Play at your own pace and you'll eventually just catch up to the newest release. Especially since they take so long to localize. Also yes, they are as good as people say. The fanbase is so hardcore for a reason lol
Edit: Just a bit of context, I started with Cold Steel 1+2 and went back to the Sky games from there, which was honestly fine as well. I just wouldn't start in the middle of an arc or with the latest release. You'll definitely miss out on a lot if you do.

As Trails fan, I want to say that Garnt makes it sound hard to approach, but in reality you have 3 entry points, which make it as painless as possible, they are , Trails in the Sky (first arc in series, so you won't miss any callbacks) Trails to Zero/Azure (Second arc)and Trails of Cold Steel. Right now, if you want to try I recommend first or third arc, because third have modern gameplay but first have best characters.

I can never agree with starting Trails are CS because the biggest twist from the end of the first game is just brought up casually in conversation in CS1 and there is just no gravity to it if you don't know what they're talking about. And then there is how closely the end of CS1 ties into the end of Ao/Azure. But more importantly then any of that so many people are in such a rush to get to Cold Steel 1 when I just don't think its worth it as a game, they introduce so many new characters at once they aren't able to spend enough time fleshing each one out, and then there is how repetitive and formulaic it is too that I can easily see people get turned off by it. I had a friend that started at CS1 and fell off because of how formulaic it was, and said friend had no problem getting into Sky FC.

Trails is absolutely worth falling into the rabbit hole for. It’s by far the best video game worldbuilding I’ve ever seen. Despite how many games there are and how it’s a 20 year old series, the longest game is about 60 hours which is cold steel IV, but all the others are around 40 hrs or less. Also it’s best to play if you have a pc since all the of them are available on steam and I highly recommend going in release order with the Sky arc first. I finished Sky and Cold Steel in two years while also doing college, work, and theater which includes six months when my laptop broke while I was playing Sky First Chapter and I had to start over when I finally got a new one. It’s really not as long as it looks, but the series does have a very dedicated fan base who care very deeply about the story and the world so, like my comment now, we tend to rant about it.

As someone who has played exactly one Trails game (Trails in the Sky 1), I have to say it's probably one of the best JRPGs I've ever played and the one I'd recommend starting with. While it's a bit dated now, it has absolutely amazing worldbuilding and the thing that impressed me the most was the sheer amount of dialogue in the game. Basically, every time you complete a section of the main quest, every NPC in that area will have something new to say and some of them even have their own miniature story arcs, it's really impressive. In that game, even every chest has a different line of dialogue! In terms of difficulty, I'd say the game definitely has a learning curve and can be pretty difficult if you don't know what you're doing and don't set up your party correctly. The music is also very good as well.
In terms of length though, I'd say the game is pretty long and I have 73 hours logged with one playthrough, though a bit of that was probably AFK so I'd say maybe 60-70 hours of content if going at a leisurely pace.

The sport combines both exploration (whether it's in nature or a city) and some strategizing (maybe even the chat can part-take in this). And it can either be done on foot or on a bicycle.

  • @4minutesavedme

Garnt, you should absolutely get into the Trails series. I'm only getting started with the series myself but so far,
I believe it's the greatest piece of fiction ever made. It's just utter perfection on almost every level.
The characters, worldbuilding, story, storytelling, music and gameplay are all 10/10.
The games also have incredible NPCs with dozens of hours of dialogue.
The series is comprised of multiple arcs and it's not really complicated at all.
The Liberl Arc: Trails in the Sky, Trails in the Sky SC and Trails in the Sky the 3rd.
The Crossbell Arc: Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure.
The Erebonia Arc: Trails of Cold Steel I, II, III and IV
Trails Into Reverie which is the conclusion of the Crossbell and Erebonia Arcs.
The Calvard Arc is the current arc.
All the arcs are connected in terms of story and they have characters from previous games appearing as guests.
However, you don't have to start from the very beginning. I started with the Cold Steel games and I'm currently
playing Trails from Zero. You will get some stuff spoiled about previous games if you don't start from the
beginning but the spoilers aren't all that bad imo. I wouldn't recommend starting with the current arc though
since the story is so far developed. Also, the games aren't even out in English yet.
The entire series is only halfway done atm, so I think it's a great time to jump in.
Since you prefer playing on console (I do too) I'd recommend starting with the Cold Steel games
because they're all on PS4. You could also start with Trails from Zero but you'll have to wait for its sequel.
Trails to Azure and Trails into Reverie are coming next year.
I really hope you give the series a chance because I think you would really love it ^^

finishing the 2nd and 3rd arcs as it is the conclusion to both of them
and also fuctions as the precursor to the current arc, the Calvard Arc.
In terms of spoilers, the 3rd arc spoils some major stuff about the 2nd arc.
But I played the 3rd arc first and I'm currently playing the 2nd arc and
I don't think the spoilers have ruined my experience at all.
The 2nd arc also probably spoils some stuff about the 1st arc.
However, I should note that while the overarching story is phenomenal,
I actually care more about the characters' individual stories
which is probably why the spoilers didn't affect me as much.
