Thank you for the video and the lesson. Very educational. Thank you for showing us the real horsemanship, without forcing that young horse into the water.

You are so right. All young horses need to be given the time to check things out.
English instructers teach you to push them on and keep the head up. Thay don't give the horses time to fined out for themselfs.
Give a horse as long as he needs and you will fined he will have more confidence in his work and in you.

Thanks a bunch for putting this vid up. I'v got a mare with the same problem but worse. We have just started to put rings on her which has helped heaps because she can't get her head up in the air so you can't pull back as good. :D keep up the good work
5/5 stars for the amazing work

Great advice. However, I should add, I heard all the same exact advice previously about a young horse, rein control and introduction to water - from a pony club instructor. Including letting them have their head, letting them sniff it out etc. You do seem to criticise pony club a lot yet the ones we've been at teach horsemanship "properly" (not "English" or "Western" specifically). Perhaps it depends on the background of the instructors? Might be best not to judge them all the same?

@nadinesnoopy Obviously built on it over the next week but once you gain that control, the job is done. You have them and they have the confidence. It is the first occasion, like there, that has to be completed successfully, as the foundation stone.

I loved this video! I found it when searching training tips for green horses. I'm acquiring a green gelding soon who is 9yrs old and has been trail rode but needs some work on his transitioning from walk-trot- canter- etc. Any tips on helping him learn those transitions easily and naturally? He's a very gentle horse...no buck. I ride western so that's how he would be trained. Thank you!

I don't think your bit fits properly if he's chewing it that excessively, you should get that checked out....
