Good video Great points on rein control Great job in being assertive but not forceful
Spot on Kirk. As with the handling/training of horses, it is very important to get it right the first time.
John, I love your videos, all very helpful and great communication skills. However, you should put ads on these videos so you can make a few dollars......
Thanks/ I must learn how to,. It's not easy for Cowboys
Great video, valuable info, 12 foot or longer leads are the best....
Can't see why they can't be on the footpath and not ride two abreast.
Vets have to simpy stop doing 'Horsemanship' Videos. They are not qualified. www.horseproblems.com.au/peer_review__dr_paul_mcgreevy.html
That’s a great video John. She thinks she knows about pressure and release, but really she needs to learn a LOT more before assuming the role of educator. That’s a very quiet and long suffering demo model she had...
2:28 - 2:32. She just told the horse you can walk into my space and I will leave and give it to you. Hello leg climber. After saying Initially she isn't moving herself at all because she doesn't want to use her body language. Hmm.
No words Mr O - WHY???
I think I just lost a few brain cells. Seriously my horse listens better to just my body language (walk, trot beside me, halt, back up, circle, etc.) and no ropes then this horse did in the video
horrendous!!! I learnt to ride many years ago by no reins no stirrups, these lessons I had with an old bushy, if my daughter ever did that she wouldn't have had a horse!
That's really hard to watch, I learn't to ride and work stock before anything else and I can guarantee if I treated a horse like that I would have got smacked over the head that hard I would no longer be in the saddle. I really can't understand how anyone could think treating a horse like that is going to result in anything positive. Probably better off getting off and headbutting him, that way he may knock some sense into her.
Poor horse! I would have snatched her off that horse and smacked her! That is disgusting behaviour and it's distressing to watch and also see how many people think it's ok behaviour!
I couldn't watch all the way through.
There is really no proper release for this poor wretched animal. Draw reins only increase the pressure on the horse's mouth and only serve to create resistance in the horse. Dr Gerd Heuschmann has plenty to say about the biomechanical effects of draw reins. The bullying tactics of this young rider indicate to me she is grossly ignorant of basic horsemanship skills and humane handling. She should have been removed from that horse and educated about the correct use of negative reinforcement. This display is nothing short of disgusting and I am painfully aware that it happens to many horses. Good on you John for bringing this to the forefront.
Yes Folks. It's a worry, World wide.
What an ignorant stupid dumb bitch. That horse is a saint it should have bucked her off to kingdom come. She did it knowing that disgusting display was recorded it really proves just how dumb she is.
horrible if that was my child I'd rip her off the horse and give her bitless bridle until she learned to respect the horses mouth.. that poor thing , can't imagine the chipping on his bars from all that yanking
This is so sad to watch. That poor horse. It's mouth must be ripped to shreds.
Sad
They are proof of the wonderful mouths you put on your breakers ... very impressive and anyone can see just how light (yet unafraid and stretching to bridle) they are.

To add another dimension to this. At lease 3 times, this Video was edited, to cover the objections of the Chestnut Horse to being held in a VICE LIKE Grip, a style carried out by over 90% of British Riders. This gives their Horses the opposite to a 'Pleasure Ride' and they all have 'Learned Helplessness" Add that to the fact that therefore their Mouths are 'shagged' with these two being down to 2/10, they are all candidates for Bolting, which is why so many British Riders' die on Horseback. :(
Correct John - No horses should be on roads where there car traffic.
So those of us in the UK who don't have verges shouldn't hack out is that what you are saying?
They certainly shouldn't if the situation is as shown in this Video. This is a big subject. There is a culture ( as seen in Vid) that Riders' have a complete right to take up whole Lanes and act as Traffic Police. I see a certain arrogance in that. It is ingrained in the Country. Those Days are over. The Deaths and injuries are Weekly now. I read the News with sadness. At least, that Woman on the Chestnut, should have been out of the way, behind, single file and I would have been on the footpath. They don;t think that way in Your Country. They seem to want to be in Control. Not possible any more. Road Rage will endure.
While I have You though, on the subject of Horse Welfare, how would You like to be ridden for a so called "Pleasure Ride' for an Hour or more, having Your Gums massaged by steel, for completely no reason. Both Horses were typically Sad British Horses. :( and unfortunately, almost 100% are.
I get what you're saying, but in general we don't have the luxury of huge amounts of off road hacking that you get in Australia and the US. Even if we want to ride on bridlepaths we still have to access them via a road 99% of the time. The horses/riders portrayed in the video are not an example of every single UK rider and yes they should get a kick up the a%%e for riding irresponsibly. The vast majority, however, are fully decked out in Hi-Viz, ride single file and acknowledge drivers that are kind enough to slow down. Do you think that we prefer to ride on the roads, of course we wouldn't but unless we want to spend all our time in an arena, we have to risk road riding. I find it hard to believe that the UK are the only country to suffer traffic collisions where horses are concerned, so I find it unfair that we are singled out.
Unfortunately, this is not the venue to go on with debate but trust me Cas, I am singling them out because of the TERRIBLE lack of Horsemanship in that Country and the terrible danger that Folks are in. None of Your fault, just the BHS which is a disaster. when it comes to 'Horsemanship' and 'Risk Management' Thanks for the Yarn though.
My pleasure. You should come over and do some clinics, I'm always open to learning something different where my horse is concerned (she's a happy girl btw !!)
Great video. Riders need to put their absolute responsibility for their horses before their sense of entitlement as "Road Users". Horses have no say in where their riders take them.

I didn't even hear a mention about preparing/educating horses to be ridden in traffic.
Thank you for this set of videos! I have a lovely gray mare that I mostly trail ride but all of this is helpful.
enjoy watching your podcasts and learning
I agree about the temperaments of this breed. They are so smart sweet and willing. Best first horse for most people. I have restarted many and it’s so easy. The only hard part is learning to canter. That takes a lot of time and patience. Love love love Standardbreds. They deserve a second chance. So many are thrown away and slaughtered. It’s heartbreaking.
I have been retraining my Standardbred mare for a couple of years now. She is the best horse ever!
What you did with the whip in the 1st video was not abuse by any means. Some people treat their horse like they're glass and will break at the tiniest thing and then wonder why they have issues with their horse or they've always bought a finish horse so they didn't have to put in any of he training. Thank you for your videos!
SERIOUSLY THANK YOU for this video!!! I've been having issues with my mare lately at feeding times and b/c I'm somewhat new to all of this I wasn't sure how to handle it. I will definitely do this tomorrow morning until she learns her boundaries at feeding time. Thank you again
Wow! I mouthed my own pony like I was shown by a breaker at Uni and I never had any drama like this! Second ride went to top paddock pushed some sheep up and shut the gate on her back with my legs! I must have done something right. 😊
The Art of Listening to Horses has similarities to "Attunement" with Children
I'm about to try out one & hoping it won't buck and will be quiet when I go check it out... Going to bring my horse to this horse, lead it off after a lunge then go back to a round yard & hop on! That's the bit I'm a tad concerned about so i'm glad to find your video's even tho they r old it still helps as horse language doesn't change.
Thank you thank you thank you from Texas. It's been years since I had to give a shot to the horses (always in the neck and I was AWFUL at it!) , then I was caught without the person that usually does it for me, had an urgent penicillin situation, and I watched your video about 10 times before I charged out to the barn and did it just about as quickly as you did in the video!! Thank you - this has opened up a whole new world of taking care of them myself!!! ;-)
Commentary rather than music would have been more useful for those of us retraining Standardbreds...I've found very little useful information but your later videos with commentary have been extremely helpful!!!
Really great video thanks
It's quite hard to tell with the quality of the video - does your wife give the filly a couple of little taps on the rump? I have a 6yo who can be a tart every now and then too, and the first few times I didn't use my whip but the third time I knew it was over nothing, so she got a little 'tap' on the rump and then remembered her manners quick-smart. I only ask because different people consider different things 'discipline', and I'd love to know your definition :)
Loved this, countless times I have seen children get over powered by their ponies and ofcourse they're all holding them under their chins.. need to share this about. I like to lead my horse loosely also. My boy has been broken in and trained very well. If a horse learns from the release of pressure then why invade their space and have hold of them under the chin while leading them I say!
to oleary you are watching a master horseman teach a horse to bend her joints and use her back properly for the first time The reason she looks off is because she does not know how to flex her joints! geez folks. he's showing her how. It's awesome! Good job Will and Karen @Arttoride.
