    I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it again: it isn't that Arcane had no business being this good, it's that Arcane is one of the only video game adaptations to really do the work to make a solid show rather than mindless fanservice or cash grabs. I just hope other major games franchises take note, since the bar has now been set obscenely high for them.

    • @alechs
      @alechs Před 2 lety +181

      the interesting thing is, arcane was basically full of fanservice; in the sense that it hinted at old and retconned lore and gave a lot of tidbits to what might come based on current lore.
      it's really a masterclass of telling a story in an established universe, but staying appealing to both newcomers and supernerds.

      My take is that it was always possible to make these adaptations but the powers that be (read: TV and movie executives), don't give a shit about the property. They want to leverage the IP to get the fans to pay for it, buy merch and toys etc. Of course what that leads to is cranking out cheap steaming piles of shit where Mattel get producer credits.
      All it takes is getting talented people that understand the property to make it great, rather than pay-check writers and directors that just tick the boxes and move on.

      TL;DR: satire of wokeness in 2021.
      2021.
      ['In-character']
      TL;DR of essay: I look down on uninspired bland people without imagination or empathy* and blame them for everything. Big Corp gets mentioned, but from the perspective of uninspired bland people without imagination or empathy. Of course, _I'm_ better than those people, despite growing up in the same environment under the same circumstances.
      I imagine the writing rooms of most adaptations to be
      out-of-touch, statistics-gazing, uninspired, bland people who have been fired in the past because they were the last to get hired, the company needed to cut back on budget, their attempts at innovation were met with discouragement and disapproval by the static 'if it works 60% of the time, STFU.' whose work ethics are:
      Management could fire me whenever they want for a half-heartened BS reason. Pouring private time and effort into it doesn increase my paycheck or prospects. Management cares about their criteria. Anything above that, they take for granted with maybe a 'wow, we are so lucky to have a hard worker like you.''
      Based on: my IRL experience with my Mom and stepfather, who I've never seen pursue any personal projects or hobbies, and the ICT department of my current job. Who reacted to my 'hey, there's error X that shows up when criteria XYZ are met and it needs to be fixes' by screensharing meeting where they asked me to do the actions resulting in the error, yelled at each other in animated Spanish, looked at me and said: "Yes. We see. Error X appears when criteria XYZ are met. To prevent this error: Do not meet criteria XYZ."
      My '95's 'if it isn't broken, improve it!' mentality is going 😟😩😫
      There's just this high dissonance between what statistics are showing and what conclusions are drawn from them, combined with a lack of drive and ambition, indirectly caused by a lack of stimulation and encouragement, and
      I spent an hour sitting on my bum yelling into the digital void. Like a bland, disillusioned uninspired gall who expects a conversation to grow out of A CZcams comment. 🥱🤦‍♀️

    The thing about this series is, even when you think you've found a shortcoming, if you think about it in a certain way you can usually find a reason for it. Like, a lot of people criticize the thing with Sky and Viktor, how she seemed to come out of nowhere with no buildup just to die. But the way I see it, we don't see her more because Viktor doesn't see her, either.
    We know her as a background character, and that's all she is to him. Despite coming from Zaun, he overestimates his perspective and falls prey to the same myopia that makes progress dangerous. His determination to move forward with his research blinds him to those around him, and it's only at the very last moment when she literally hurls herself at him that he realizes (like we do) that there was a real, feeling human being literally under his nose. Someone who loved him just the way he was.
    Jayce and Viktor both confront their hubris by accidentally hurting people they failed to notice until it was too late. For Jayce it was the people underground, personified in a child he blasts with his hammer. And for Viktor it was a lab assistant he took for granted, someone who thought the world of him, and who he didn't think of at all. Neither did we, and I think that's by design.

    silco is hands down one of my favorite complex villains on cinema since... a very long time. there's no question about his corruption and motives, even HE knows he's not a good man, but there's good in evil and silco displays this beautifully. he loved and cared for vander and the betrayal was incredibly deep that even to the point of his biggest heartbreak (giving up jinx for the nation of zaun), the one and only person he wants to talk to is vander.
    and the evolution of finding this abandoned orphan and seeing himself in her to then loving and caring and nurturing her and finding a true daughter in her is some of the most beautiful story telling i've seen in a while. there's so much tenderness between silco and jinx. there's a lot he did wrong in raising her but there's also a lot he did right and at the peak of the conflict he finally understood vander's choice and reconciled that trauma within himself. as he was dying, he didn't waste a second thinking of his dream of zaun or all the things he still needs to accomplish or all the power there still is for him to grab. his ONLY THOUGHT IN THAT MOMENT was to make sure that when he's gone, jinx will know she was truly loved... so heartbreaking.

      Silco died a good man. No good man would give up his daughter for anything. The whole idea about Skys death is to give you the feeling that there was someone close to you, supportive and loving every day and when we least expect it, they are gone, we can never see them, get to know them, learn more about them because we take people for granted.

      My takeaway from Viktor was that he always felt alone, even in his backstory Singed tells him "loneliness is often the byproduct of a gifted mind". Viktor felt like he didn't have anyone, he even stops trusting Jayce at one point and his whole struggle is about leaving behind a legacy for people to remember him by. He feels worthless and only creating something revolutionary will change that. Viktor wants to be accepted despite being crippled and from the undercity.
      But when Sky dies, Viktor realizes he wasn't alone, he has worth outside his inventions. It takes losing the one person who was always by his side for him to realize that. Now he knows true loneliness. Even though he and Jayce make up, they'll probably never get back their old friendship.
      In pursuit of acceptance, Viktor loses the one person always supporting him

    Really don’t get why people are calling Jinx “discount Harley Quinn” when literally the only thing they have in common is mental instability (which, btw, are due to different events in their life) and the excitable violence. Like Harley Quin ripoffs *do* for sure exist, but not every happy violent character is Harley Quinn. That’s like saying every skeleton character wearing street clothes is Sans. It’s just…irritating.

    • @ruga-ventoj
      @ruga-ventoj Před 2 lety +121

      To be fair, jinx was originally made to basically be a discount Harley Quinn/Joker to oppose Vi and Caitlyn, who were Enforcers of Piltover. There was little backstory behind them all until Ekko hit the scene and dropped a bit of lore. It wasn't until now, with Arcane, we see their stories fleshed out and become their own characters.
      Jinx was Harley, but now Jinx is Jinx.

    • @PaintBottle
      @PaintBottle Před 2 lety +22

      i would say the way she is/was presented in the game when she was released was very close to harley. Both utilise very similar humor, both have inanimate objects they treath as friends(jinxes guns and harley has taxidermy beaver), both are mentally unstable agents of crime and chaos and more or less both use toys either as a weapon or part of a weapon and both have tentendsy to go for uneven clothkng choises. haven't been in touch for years so cant say for the current state of jinxes ingame presentation but i dont think the reason for her madness was really told/shown before, so the nuances how she got where she is didnt differenciate her from harley and outside few voicelines maybe jinxes character was not really developed and the part that really showed was the quirky fun mayhem that also defines harley.
      Most prominent differences come from their relationships to other characters i would say. So in vacuum harley is still a therapist and acrobat and jinx is crafty person with some mad scientist wibes to her nature. Which isnt too much of a difference in their core characteristics.
      All in all arcane really made jinx her own but there is definitely a lot of harley in her in game and likely in arcane too when she really gets there.

    Silco is one of the *very* rare villains that has character development DURING the story they are villains for. Characterization of Sky was very subtle -- she and Victor knew each other in their childhood. She was the girl up on the ledge when Victor was sailing his boat down the river. Without the context of their interactions in adulthood, it's hardly an interaction at all, but once her attitude toward him is more fleshed out as an adult, that scene seems to imply that she's been aware of the ways that he isolates himself his whole life. The fact that she's still working with him as an adult, and looks up to him, (to me, at least) implies that she had always wanted to be closer friends with him, despite him always pushing people away when he felt vulnerable.

There's so many details in every scene, like how the rifle that Caitlyn trades for Vi's potion to heal her is actually the rifle she used when she won in the shooting contest with the enforcer woman. All these details around Vi and Caitlyn made me search for their real game interactions in League and the crumbs do not disappoint. They're just straight up gay, for real. I hope in season 2 they'll become... roommates.

    I adored the show, it's probably my favorite thing thats come out this year. As for S2, I'm really hoping that Vi and Cait will actually be a core story pillar. Vi and Jinx's relationship as sisters was a focus in S1, but its actually mostly Powders story and its predominantly her issues in relation to Silco and Vi that get highlighted. Vi's trauma, not just what happened in act 1 but also the fact she was tossed into a prison hellhole to be abused and forgotten for years, is rarely directly addressed as she spends the majority of the season being a human wrecking ball trying to find and save Powder. Cait likewise had a lot of groundwork laid as a frustrated, sheltered idealist trying to escape the shadow of her parents, but her arc is definitely not focused on in S1. It feels like there's a lot of untapped potential there for a main S2 focal pair, which admittedly would also satisfy my basic ass need for more wonderfully gay moments with them.

      Strongly agree! It'd be great if we get a deep dive into Vi, her trauma, and internal conflict over everything that happened in S1. I'd love to see that play out instead of another timeskip or something.

      I totally agree with you all. I didn’t really like how Powder changes and becomes Jinx because somehow it made her character less believable and more cartoonish (which is not a bad thing, but it didn’t work for me there). So it would be great if they concentrated more on Vi and Caitlyn, so that my heart can melt again even when they only look at each other. Also: why are we all obsessed with gay characters??

    • @troikas3353
      @troikas3353 Před 2 lety +19

      @@philipedef2024 I felt like Powder's descent into Jinx was handled exceptionally well. It doesn't really culminate until basically the final moment of the season and it does a remarkably good job conveying how she's struggled with a lifetime of constant trauma and repeated tragedy. It shows how everything she suffers just leads her down a self destructive path and she has no one in her life positioned to help her. Ultimately her own demons cause her to create a scenario where she cannot and will not win no matter which way it goes. It's an incredibly effective and very human tragedy despite the over the top trappings. To me anyway.
      As for why we all get so obsessed with the gay? I honestly think it's just a matter of scale; There's thousands upon thousands of straight characters out there and that volume automatically means there's hundreds upon hundreds of well written, well crafted straight characters and couples. By contrast there's very few lgbtq characters out there, especially in big budget projects, which also means there's equally fewer well written and well crafted ones. So when we are given a gem like this, its like giving a starving girl a cupcake.

    when the show was being announced and teased I definitely started out with "it's another videogame movie/show, this is just gonna be as bad and dissapointing as every other one" and oh boy am I so happy with how incredibly wrong I was. this was one of the few shows I've ever watched that I felt, really, really felt when things happened, the first act's deaths took me back hard, and at the slap I reeled back in shock and emotional hurt. everything felt so real and deep that I appreciate it greatly, and I'm probably one of the few people who really felt Sky's death as her face reminded me of my best friend, who I, at the time, didnt know if she was alive or not (thankfully she is ok) and it absolutely broke me. this show really dug deep and left me with an empty, pained feeling at the end that I really do appreciate. I'm very excited for S2 of it, but I also hope they take however long they need to make is as great as the first season

    Not sure Jace is really the guy you want to put as a shining example.
    Yes he does mean well, and want to do everything possible to help people.
    But he’s also pretty classist agents Zaun. Was willing to bend the rules and get into dirty politics to grease the other council members hands. And worst of all, was going to give zaun to Silco, the very man that made it so much worst by flooding the streets with addictive mutagenic drugs!
    Eco seems more like the guy you want as a paragon. Only problem I have with him, is that he’s pretty weakly set up in the first act. And doesn’t come back into the picture officially till act three.

  • @holyrod2001
    @holyrod2001 Před 2 lety +2

    One thing I liked about Act 3 is that it mirrors Act 1. An easy example of this is how Jinx snatches defeat from a hard-won and improbably victory through explosions.
    That sort of mirroring is an impressive thing that we see throughout. I thought the show was very solid but not amazing (except for the art which is top-notch). However, what it does really well is taking good things we've seen in other places and executing them very competently and the mixture is mostly seamless. You have a little bit of She-Ra, little bit of Spider-verse, some MCU slow gathering of characters where they marinate in their own arcs before we see them mix with others, etc. Because of how every element is done very well, including just basic setup payoff things and mirroring within the larger continuity, it creates an extremely solid response that just makes you go "wow, I'm really satisfied."

    Fun facts, Vi has a poster of a busty woman hanging some cleavage over her bunkbed in Act 1. Vi's name, Violet, is the lesbian flower. Caitlyn's hair color and general outfit color in Arcane and in the games is Violet. There are multiple times throughout the season where Vi's eyes drop to either Caitlyn's breasts or butt. A full ref of Vi's back tattoo DOES in fact exist, which... the implications >.>.

    I feel like the show would have benefited from 50min episodes. 30 min more in act 1 would have allowed for a little bit more development on powder's unstableness, and her relationship with ekko, as well as Jayce actually exhausting his options before trying to off himself. In act 2, 30min more would have been a good way to establish more of Viktor's and Jayce's obsession with magic (we can backfill that magic saved jayce and viktor needs saving, but I think they would benefit from more). It would also be great to establish why exactly Caitlyn is so adamant in being an enforcer and having a good impact on the world. And also do more for Skye. Act 3 would benefit from more on Mel and her mom, how they came to have that relationship, and also why Jayce is so quick to use hextech as weapons when he insisted for so long that hextech was only supposed to help people, an not to be used for harm.

She definitely has her own plans, and she does manipulate Jayce for her own goals, but overall she legitimately cares for the city and the people, and she just does whatever she can to make that seemingly impossible peace a reality.
    Mel wants weapons to protect the city. Not because she wants to go to war like her mother wants, but to make sure they're strong so that peace can last. A "show weakness, risk war, or show strength, and the enemy will hesitate" scenario.

When I heard all the news of this new series it wasn’t that I was ‘intrigued’ but I saw their edits all over the place and figured, why not? The animation looked beautiful. LET ME TELL YOU. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. I fell in love with everything about the show, I now breathe, live and sleep through the show. 😂 but seriously, I couldn’t get myself to play League of Legends, however I found that Wild Rift and Legends of Runeterra are so cool???
