People keep comparing these two relationships but they were intentionally different. Ikaris/Sersi have this transcendent love, but it's... kinda broken. Because Ikaris has kept himself closed off from Sersi for so long, knowing the truth of their situation. He is a soldier, always has been; he keeps his feelings close to him. Everything's not all right between them, they are (excuse the pun) eternally at odds. In every life, on every planet, they will be - that's why Ikaris well, does what he does. There's a sense of emptiness and tragedy there. Druig/Makkari are different. They have this youthful energy, they don't have this crisis between them. Druig as a character is supposed to come as a surprise, you see he has a big heart under there, despite appearances. You root for them because the characters aren't having this wedge between them (Though it helps the actors do have insane chemistry). A lot of the differences in the pairings and the reception thereof comes down to the fact Ikaris and Druig are foils to each other, and their character arcs subvert expectations. Idk just my opinion lol I just feel the two pairings served very different purposes and were executed well along with that vision, which makes audience reception unsurprising.

@@caitlinb35 it’s funny because when I saw it a second time, the relationships were different for me. The only true romantic relationship is between Sersi and Ikaris, but I believe the implication is that sersi has a greater capacity for love. Love for humanity, the other eternals, Ikaris, etc. Ikaris was in love with only sersi more than sersi was in love with Ikaris. I think sprite knew that too which is why she was in love with the idea of love and projects that on Ikaris. She wanted to be loved in the way Ikaris loves sersi.

As the movie is and without adding or removing on my own, ikaris seemed obsessed more than actually in love with her. From the moment they “meet” he already has doe eyes and so does she. Why? They barely know anything which means arisem either made them that way or allowed them to retain something cultivated in former lives. Either way it doesn’t come off as genuine love to me. As it goes there never is a series of truly deep conversations that would lead them to being in love. Not really. The sex scene was random and honesty made me uncomfortable because cersi looked like she didn’t really want to be there. Ikaris looked like he didn’t want to have sex with her and was just doing it for reasons.... then he goes off and leaves her but keeps tabs. Basically stalking her for thousands of years. That’s weird but ok. Once they get back together he continuously insults her capabilities and ultimately insults the fundamental traits that make her who she is. Which tells me he never really loved her he loved the ideas around her. Maybe arishem knew that ikaris would be the thing that stops cersi from evolving her powers. Who knows.... but this slap stick romance could have been completely erased from the movie and the only person it would effect would be sprite.
Gilgamesh and thena are shown continuous showing their love for each other. Not telling. While ikaris spends thousands of years sulking and running from cersi, Gilgamesh devotes himself to thena and watches over her and shoulders her burdens with her. Willingly. Without complaint. I understand people want to believe they are just friends, but I’m not sure why honestly. Friendships doesn’t happen like that and defo not as depicted in the MCU. I wish they had had the screen time that ikaris and cersi got.
Then there’s makari and druig. They had all the potential in the world but they got shafted. Not just in the romance department but just as individual characters. They could have done some cooler stuff with makari and druig. Really cool. But they went with druig runs a commune and makari locked herself in the ship with trinkets. They deserved better.

    • @rui5421
      @rui5421 Před 2 lety +28

@@vikkidonn wanting more of the characters at least speaks to how well the characters were portrayed and how the movie at the least left seeds to interest us. In my mind, romance was not an imperative for Thena and Gilgamesh. They were warrior companions. The only person who could stop Thena was Gilgamesh, and his dedication to her romantic or otherwise was deep. Given that druig and Makkari weren’t originally a thing until the actors chemistry inspired it, I found it to be a nice combination character wise. They both have walls that keep them from communicating with the world in the way the others can. Druig could easily control everyone but then that creates a barrier for sincere even interaction between him and humans. Still though, he cares enough about them to want to use his powers for their benefit. Makkari can communicate with humans through her voice and her isolation seemed deep to me. She was far less interested in the people and far more interested in their stuff. She hoarded art and artifacts. She may not have loved people but she loved what they create. Those two having a sort of outsiders black sheep bond was fantastic.
ikaris and sersi having a dysfunctional relationship is I think the point. I never got the vibe that sersi was so in love with ikaris that it ever tempted her to change her position. Whether Iove or infatuation, ikaris was a slave to his feelings for sersi from the beginning. He only found what love really meant when he found that he could not kill her and would have to give up his mission and submitted to the Uni-mind.
If we’re to reflect on the depth of love in the movie, sersi’s love for humanity is the biggest one. Thena, Gilgamesh, Druig and Makkari, and Phastos. They all found love of some kind. Kingo found love for himself and his adventures as a star, followed by ikaris and sprite who found contempt for their feelings around love. Sersi’s forgiveness of sprite is another example of how deeply she loved everyone, much like Ajak had no hate for ikaris when he betrayed her.

Nah.. I think this movie would've work fine if it been split into two movies. First movie for introduction, start with why they went to earth, showing the difference between their personality (like Ikaris loyalty to Arishem), showing how close they were to each others, making the audience attach to them and ending the movie with all of them spliting up. Its not like MCU movie need to be in chronological order anyway. Then start the second movie with the present time, showing how their life now, fokus on one character (Sersi, I guess. I don't mind that she was with Sprite, but at least show us the dynamics of their life together before the attack so Sprite behaviour make sense), suddenly getting attack by deviant making her worried since she thought deviants no longer exists on earth. I don't mind if this part happened just like in the movie since by this time audience supposed to already connected with the characters in the first movie. How Sersi find Ajax's body then find the others to defeat the deviants since that's why they were send to earth in the first place. The movie can introduce their new life by flashback when she found them. I think it's better if Sersi found out the real reason they been send to earth after their regroup not before. Then the conflicts between them whether to follow Arishem or not. And at least show us Ikaris try to stop them from finding the truth but they found out anyway and try to convince them to follow Arishem after they found out the truth. Not just keep quiet like he did in the movie.
I don't think to many characters in one movie is the real problem. The problem is they try to squeeze to many storyline in one movie. Guardian of Galaxy also have many characters, but James Gunn managed to make it work somehow.

Why does Kevin Feige keep hiring independent filmmakers if he will make them follow Marvel's formula anyway, instead of giving them creative freedom? At least, after the initial failed attempts with the DCU, the producers at Warner Bros have learned from their mistakes and now they're letting directors like Todd Phillips and James Gunn do their job, with great results.

    • @Pantheragem
      @Pantheragem Před 2 lety +91

That's exactly why they hire independent filmmakers. It's been part of that very formula as well for quite a while. They're smaller and have less pull in the industry so it's easy for Disney to bend them to their will. They know they'll just get replaced, and then they'll never work for Disney again.

Literally the ETERNALS thing is being eternal… living through history. Experiencing everything. Presumably having a lot of growth/development to the point in where they would side with humanity.
But we didn’t get to see that? We had a few flashbacks (like… 3 or 4 maybe) and they cut back to present day world ending scenario…
I would have much preferred to follow a story of them living through the ages, battling monsters, each other and themselves as they come to terms with a) being immortal b) not being human c) wanting to be human - I just think there would have been much more potential for inter-character drama and conflict and tension 🤷🏻‍♀️ I enjoyed it. It was a basic action superhero film and i cheered when Ikaris was kneed in the nuts and punched im the face and loved Thena and Makkari but like… they were hardly in this. First movie should have just been about the eternals through the ages and fighting the deviants, ending in the scene of them splitting up. Then the reveal about their true purpose in the second movie would have more meaning to the audience. But i'm honestly tired of world/universe ending events, why can't it just be a more local issue.

I’m surprised you forgot the most important part of that final credits scene: Mahershala Ali as Blade off-screen asking Dane if he’s “sure about that.” That got a pretty big reaction from the group next to me. Overall though, I felt Eternals was a movie with good ideas but bit off waaaaaay more than it could chew. I enjoyed the conflict between Ikaris and the Eternals at the end, but it’s such a long and slow trip through non-existent stakes and characters that are just not that well developed. I loved Zhao’s direction, but the script definitely needed work (and honestly could’ve been shorter)

In my viewing of the movie, some guy yelled out "Hey, it's Jon Snow!" when Kit Harrington came on screen. Also, some girl started full on screaming when Harry Styles popped up. You know it's not a great movie when the best audience reactions you get are to 1) a thing that happened in another media franchise and 2) a guy who only appeared in a post-credit scene. People were just laughing when Ikaris flew into the sun. Like almost none of the character beats really landed and Gemma Chan and Kit Harrington had like no chemistry in the 2 minutes of screentime they were legally obligated to include to set up his arc in another movie because nothing can just exist without first being set up in another movie, apparently. She had great chemistry with Richard Madden, but like it also didn't need to be in the movie at all and just ate up time. I think the only character I really fully enjoyed was Phastos. Guy had a full complete arc, his actor had great comedic timing, and he had good chemistry with the actors who played his husband and son. Everyone else felt like they needed a 45-minute mini-series episode about them. I'd watch the shit out of Kingo's adventures. That Bollywood dance sequence was incredibly well done, which is not something I ever thought I'd say about an MCU movie. I hope a director's cut of it comes out because I would love to see what Chloe actually wanted to do with it.

You can tell they land in Mesopotamia because of the knife Sersi gives him. You can see when Ikaris marries Sersi, Sprite is pissed off in the photo. They inspire some of our favorite tales (Gilgamesh, Thena-Athena, Sersi-Cerci, Druig-Druid, Phastos-Hephastus, Ikaris, Sprite-Peter Pan & Tinker Bell, etc;). Evil Superman has been done alot, but Ikaris does it in his unique way. The music is great and hints as always (bc they’re just waiting for Arishem to tell them what to do, music captures that). Kingo’s bestfriend could be a skrull since he likes the dead deviant. Kingo brings up that he hung out with Thor when he was a kid, so the Celestials have a big connection to the Asgardians. The movie may have flopped because it didn’t have as much action scenes but if it’s job is to make you seem like they’re staying away from the conflicts of the MCU, they did their job well.
This was a cluster, but balanced out (maybe not evenly but still). Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, The Young Avengers, Avengers 5, The Dark Avengers, Secret Invasion, & Secret Wars are clusters that could flop or exceed. With WandaVision, Falcon & The Winter Soldier, Loki & Hawkeye succeeding in their own goals, i’m excited for Phase 4

Honestly I think the movie would have done a lot better if it wasn't trying to be in the marvel cinematic universe. Because this movie could have stopped trying to waste time on dropping hints that they existed in the same world as iron man, and instead focused more on flushing out those characters which were so close to being something interesting. Also this should have been a show not a movie so that they could have the time to really get those characters and story flushed out.

The start: someone was binging Star Wars before they made this.
    The first lines of dialog:
    "Beautiful, isn't it?"
    "Hi, i'M IkArUs"
It's going to be one of those
Sprite: Until the last couple of centuries of human history, she would have been considered a full adult. I get being annoyed by the sudden kid's table benching, but this whole millennia of misery thing was weird.
Finding Arakis's body: Marvel does horror, let's go! (Was disappointed)
Ikarus betrayal and the Deviants: cool ideas, poor execution
After Plan A was foiled: killing it is now their only option, good job, buddy. This is your fault now.
Fly into the sun: I was rooting for it, but when it actually happened? Both disappointed and amused
"I'd follow you anywhere, boss": At what point did this man ever lead anything? He's a born follower with barely an ounce of individual thought
Non-interference policy: Why? If you want a large, advanced population for your seed buddy to crush, why not stop them killing each other? Why not give them advanced technology and teach them how it works so they can make more?
Hephaestus and his family: everything about those scenes were adorable and Ik even had an inkling of personality
Overall: big, beautiful, ambitious, but ultimately forgettable but for how baffling some of the choices were

The whole thing about Sprite acting like a teenager kinda made sense to me. Assuming that Eternal anatomy is somewhat similar to humans, a lot of their personality would be determined by what's happening chemically and developmentally in their brain. Therefore, if an Eternal has a teenage body and brain which never develop to adulthood, those "teenage" temperaments and personality traits would remain. It's similar to how Ikaris and Sersi act like 30-somethings and don't exhibit any of the diminished neuroplasticity associated with old age despite being thousands of years old.

as much as i agree with a lot of the criticism, including amanda's, lets be real the main reason this got such an uproar and held to this lofty standard is because of all the representation. we always get higher expectations. of course the big director has an impact too, but i walked away really happy and impressed with all the new things mcu has been trying out lately, even if it was 100% too much for one film, which i feel like they only do when they arent sure about the audiences want for another-- which is also why i think Angelina was so under used because that way if she doesn't want to continue or if they didn't want to there was no expectations-- but i liked it. i totally got the pre-synder justice league feel too, but like in a good way. that scene on the beach had me at the edge of my seat. i was also really impressed with the look of the movie in general, and by the end i was really attached to the cast we had left. i just think people need to remember, as much as this is directed like some poetic cinema, its marvel. they will probably in the future be put more in comedic and realistic situations.

I liked a lot of the concepts and that the story went in interesting directions, but the execution could have been much better. I did feel mixed on the characters however. I really connected with some of them (Thena, Makkari, Druig, Phastos), while others left me feeling quite detached (Ikaris and Sersi's relationship did nothing for me).
I think they needed to make this a Disney+ show to give the story the time it needed to be fully fleshed out. As much as I liked Eternals for what it was, I feel that at this point the MCU's model is in a weird three-way tie on where The Next Step goes. You have stuff like the Disney+ shows establishing that a new age of heroes is approaching with Young Avengers camoes and supporting roles, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Moon Knight. But then you have a continuation of character stories that have spanned for years with certain heroes getting a threequel or a fourquel, plus the core Avengers team getting expanded further and further. THEN you have a weird remixing of old heroes with the multiverse shenanigans, where at the end of the day, the central characters in What If? and Loki are variations of pre-existing characters. All in all, I feel like Eternals needs room to breathe. Maybe not a sequel that will be about 2.5 hours, but instead a series that could explore way more and let the characters have their moments without feeling too pressed for time.
Edit: also marvel needs to chill with what pre-existing characters get focus agatha harkness did not deserve a greenlit spin-off/sequel before billy and tommy got to be wiccan and speed

I agree with some of your points. Every person I know who saw it thought it'd be a better series, but that the visuals definitely needed to be on a cinema screen.

I watched it last night at the movies and good lord I couldn’t wait for it to be over! It’s so slow paced, all over the place, nothing really makes sense and it bored me to death??!
