Can't comment on lore but maybe a clue as to why Lillard has the alias he did - Raglan is the last name of Oliver Reeds psychiatrist character in David Cronenberg's The Brood, another film about children controlled by monstrous parental figures and dysfunctional families. Could have just been a throwaway ref, tho if the theory about creating a "proper family" is correct, that could be hinting at it

So, Mark actually addressed his exclusion from this FNAF movie. The directors or producers did reach out to him and ask him to be in it! Unfortunately, it was being filmed at the exact same time that he was filming his own upcoming movie, Iron Lung. Even though his role in FNAF would've only needed a few days of filming, he couldn't risk being off his own set for that long, so he had to turn it down. It sucks, I would have LOVED to see Markiplier in this movie, but maybe we can see him in a future one if they continue the story.

I’m an older fan and I think the movie was fun. What the lore purists forget is the very first game didn’t have much story wise. Scott didn’t expect it to blow up like it did. He got lucky and was able to use the one big mystery he had in the original game which was the murdered kids. The lore is an absolute shit show. Almost a decade later and no one can agree on anything and Scott refused to commit to much of anything story wise. The movie team worked with what they could and we got a super fun and campy thriller.
Also an edit: Markiplier was apparently supposed to be the guard that got killed in the beginning but he’s been super busy with his own movie adaptation Iron Lung.

I'm something of a newcomer to FNAF (been following MatPat's theories for years but I only got into the lore after the trailer dropped); and I can confirm FNAF having "lore purists" is absurd, your description of the lore is 100% correct and I'm not even sure if there *is* a canon lore (Sammy doesn't exist in the games and I think he's a false memory in the books and yet some people use it in game-related stuff, for example)

24:25 I think the idea of them using electricity against the animatronics comes from another FNAF game called 'Sister Location' in which you basically use "electric shocks" to force the animatronics in that game to behave a certain way by hurting them, so animatronic do indeed seem to be affected by electricity to some degree.
Also in the games, I think that Golden Freddy is far more "ghost-like" than the others because the final child, often referred to as "the one you [William Afton] shouldn't have killed" wasn't stuffed inside the suit but rather just possessed the suit. The Golden Freddy suit was paired with the Golden Bonnie/Rabbit suit so it also has springlocks, and so without the springlocks being locked because no one is wearing the suit, the spirit cannot move the suit. That's why the spirit teleports both in the film and game and more so just "appears" like the suit.
Also from 26:37 the whole "family" aspect makes a whole lot more sense in the games since in the games William's daughter, Elizabeth, ends up being killed by an animatronic and his son, who doesn't canonically have a name, gets killed when his teenage son... Michael, or rather "Mike", pulls a prank and ends up accidentally getting his brother killed by the Golden Freddy animatronic. So many assume that Willliam used the dead children to try and figure out how to resurrect his children since both Elizabeth and his unnamed son (who is commonly called "the Crying Child") end up possessing animatronics themselves, with the Crying Child being one of two spirits inside of Golden Freddy. So yeah, in the games Mike is actually William's son and is trying to free the spirits and stop William, or at least that's the most subscribed to theory.

As someone who has followed FNAF for a long time, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. Good references and some sequences were spot on. My biggest complaint is more from a storytelling aspect, where the main character isn't really connected to the titular location. We spend so much time on Mike's survivor's guilt, but he's only connected to Freddy's by happenstance. I think the narrative would have been stronger if his little brother had gone missing at Freddy's (not some random forest in Nebraska) and Mike was working to figure out the mystery for himself (while bringing the audience along for the ride). Needing Vanessa to info-dump the mystery on the audience felt so weak.

    • @SierraThorne
      @SierraThorne Před 6 měsíci +59

The fan theory that his brother is the ghost in the Balloon Boy toy or is going to be The Puppet in a sequel would have better connected the main character IMO
Even if its a little ridiculous, its more in line with FNAF lore's ridiculousness

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat Před 6 měsíci +74

@@SierraThorne - Definitely! To be honest, I wouldn’t have even cared if Garrett turned out to not be one of the animatronics, just as long as his disappearance was more directly related to Freddy’s. Like sure, the forest has interesting options for visual stuff, but it’s so random for Afton to disappear the child there. The movie felt like a character coming-to-terms story set in FNAF, rather than it being a FNAF story.
Hopefully the sequel will be more connected. :)

I think they just couldn't come up with a good way to explain the premise of fnaf if they didn't have Vanessa there. How do they introduce things to the audience if Mike is already familiar with Fazbear's? It isn't great, but I understand why they did it. Especially since Scott isn't the best at anything involved with writing

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat Před 6 měsíci +57

@@TheLokibringer - I mean, he was young when Garrett was taken. I don't understand why the concept wasn't "Mike finally gets back to Freddy Fazbear's, works out a deal with the 'owner' to be the new security guard, spends his nights trying to uncover what happened all those years ago." Vanessa can still be the conflicted Afton child: she is told to keep Mike from figuring things out, but she ends up helping him instead. His focus on learning what happened to Garrett still risks the life of Abby.
He could have found old news articles stuffed around the pizzaria or spent the nights doing research rather than constantly dream-diving. I don't think the premise needed to be told to the audience; it could have been shown more naturally.

One complaint (among a few more minor ones) I have about the movie was Golden Freddy being a bit too subtly colored. I've followed the franchise since Markiplier first played FNAF 1, and even I was super confused about why the kid said he was "Not Freddy". The costume being mangled was enough of an indicator for the others I went to see it with, but I think it could have really benefitted from being a brighter yellow to distinguish it a bit better.

The children's bodies got stuffed into the suits and their ghosts possessed the animatronics, trapping them in the pizzeria forever. That is the main lore following the entire franchise

So, as a fan of fnaf, there's a major divide in the fanbase between older fans who want the series to lean into the gore and horror vibes that the concept of dead kids stuffed into robot suits brings, and the newer fans who want more 'horror for kids.' This is probably why the fnaf movie is so divisive, because it leans a lot more into the 'horror for kids (not really scary more lore focused)' scene than the older horror vibes. It's not a really scary movie, and doesn't do anything with the idea of, again, DEAD KIDS STUFFED INTO SUITS TO ROT.
The main villain feels more silly than anything else, but I had fun with this film noticing all the fun references. The story is pretty self contained, and doesn't get bogged down with all the game lore (outside of one thing), and the animatronics are the clear highlight. Overall a good time if you like the games, and if you don't it's a pulpy action horror movie.

I mean, the franchise has a problem with defining what is the main villain's purpose with all this, has had since the beginning. Now it's like "oooh experimenting with agony" but that does not give him a reason to START murdering kids, just to keep at it. I think Scott hasn't solved that yet, so he decided to keep it out of at least this movie, but a killer with no clear motive is just weak (we can infer motive from adults being killed, but kids make it harder to come up with something PG) and makes the lore difficult to follow and care about.

as a 19-year-old fnaf fan and film student, i had a lot of feelings about this movie.
i went opening night and had a BLAST, the theatre was mostly older fans like myself and people were cheering and having a good time. i genuinely haven't had such a fun theatre experience since i saw EEAAO on opening weekend last year.
that being said, the fnaf fan in me felt a biiiiit conflicted about the way they presented the lore, choosing to mash together bits and pieces of the story to try to create something coherent enough for general audiences. some plot decisions didn't really make sense, especially if you KNOW the real game lore, but it works if you treat it as an alternate universe from the games.
as a film student, i have to say that the cinematography was GREAT. every shot looked good, the sets were loyal to the source material, and the animatronics themselves were a joy to watch. the usage of the VHS tapes was very smart and was a great nod to the fnaf sub-community of analog horror series. i loved the lighting in the pizzeria, it definitely added to the eerie atmosphere. obscuring max's death with a silhouette as a way to maintain that coveted pg-13 rated was very smart too.
i don't ABSOLUTELY ADORE the movie but i genuinely did really enjoy it. it's funny, i usually agree with critic consensus when it comes to film, but i think this is just a textbook case of "made for the fans". the ones who get it, get it.

as an older fan, i absolutely loved this movie. i loved the lore changes they made bc it opens the gates for new theories to come out instead of just rehashing older theories. i see the movie like how i see the books, an alternate reality with similar characts and the same basic plot lines, but ultimately a completely different story with its own set of lore. sure, a lot overlaps but there are still a bunch of differences between the two.
i personally felt like the true horror in this movie was not the animatronics but the simple fact of poverty and not being able to provide for a young loved one to the point of being threatened to have them taken away, as well as watching your very young sibling being kidnapped and not being able to do anything about it. those situations are horrifying and horror does not just have to be about gore and violence, we can have nuance lmao. also i loved the fort building scene bc it shows you that the ghosts in the animatronics are still just kids; they dont want to murder people, William does, they just wanna be kids and build forts and have a dance party.
my big theory for vanessa is that she isn't biologically Williams daughter, but he kidnapped her and brainwashed her to not say anything and to even help him out with hiding the bodies. she'll never report that she found blood or bodies at freddy's bc she knows her dad will be suspect #1. it also makes sense as to why William is so quick to stab vanessa bc he doesn't actually see her as family just as a pawn for him to use until its time to sacrifice her for the "greater good".

As a former fan from 2014, the movie really sucked. Some of the lore changes weren’t bad, but others made no sense. There was zero horror and zero tension throughout this movie. The only part that has any sort of suspense was the opening scene. The tone is all over the place, it wants to be horror comedy, but it feels like I’m watching a completely different movie each time it switches. The acting is pretty good, mostly Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard. That scene were mike was willing to give up sister was only good because of Josh Hutcherson’s performance, he sold it. Matthew Lillard gave it his all with the 6 minutes of screen time he had. The dialogue they gave some of these actors was pretty bad, especially for Elizabeth Lail, I was shocked at some of the lines that her character, Vanessa said. The fort scene is absolutely terrible. Yes, I know the animatronics are kids, but I feel like everyone already caught that, because most of the movie is spent on those damn dream sequences. There are much better ways of conveying the information you want then what they came up with. Plus, the animatronics are supposed to be threatening, that’s how the movie was marketed, the fort scene removes any threat they had.
It was very disappointing, and it’s certainly not worth the 8 years I waited.

@@frostrider3704 With them being such a big studio it's more like they had set up for filming, mark had set up for filming, the two conflicted. I'm pretty sure Mark is directing Iron Lung so that means he had to be on set nearly every scene. Movie filming and production can take a very long time - months upon months upon months, not to mention it being very VERY expensive. It's not that they don't take him seriously, it's more that they aren't going to post-pone filming of the fnaf movie or iron lung for months just to make this happen, way too expensive, and too difficult with such big productions. For them to reschedule filming that means rescheduling the actors, the equipment, the hundreds of crew members, the locations. Not to mention they still both have deadlines to meet. It just isn't worth it, on either end. It's very easy to underestimate just how many moving parts these kinds of things have.

She enjoyed it; while she acknowledged that they changed a lot, she also said she appreciated that the movie knew what it was and leaned into it. While I obviously missed a lot of the Easter eggs she was catching, I still enjoyed it as just a silly "dumb fun" movie. It didn't make me even slightly interested in playing the games, and honestly I don't even need to see the movie a second time. But I'm glad I saw it once.

I actually enjoyed the movie a lot. My brother and I enjoyed the games and were huge fans and followers of the lore. Seeing MatPat in there was a fun cameo and I really liked how they incorporated in the lore. It was a little rushed and I thought they could have expanded on the plot with the missing children and their deaths. I would have liked to see savage Bonnie/Jeremy giving William Afton the fight of his life. The way they changed the story around with Vanessa was a surprise, but I didn’t hate it. I also think Mike’s conflict with Garrett took a back seat and was hardly important at the end. I think Golden Freddy could have had a way more interesting role in the story, but it was fun to see him and the “It’s me” Easter egg. I liked the Spring lock scene, I knew they were going to do it as soon as Vanessa told Mike about them. I’m very interested to see what happens to Afton and what Balloon Boy’s role is in the next movie.

As far as the changes from the games, it’s not a big shock when we’ve already seen with the books that Scott is very willing to do alternate timelines to explore the same ideas and big events. It's so interesting to hear someone who isn't a fan of the series comment on the Freddy murder mask thing. I thought it was really silly because there's no reason for it to exist other than to kill people. Like the spring lock suits, while ridiculous, have an in-universe purpose that isn't just 'kill ppl'. It adds to the idea that a lot of what is wrong with Freddy's is just sheer negligence, which I guess makes sense if the owner WANTS children dead XD
I also used to theorize that William Afton was committing CSA along with murder, but the later games + the books really seem to push this angle that his motive was trying to understand the power of, like... human agony? And how that could bind souls/ghosts to the animatronics? It's kind of confusing because the timeline is (intentionally?) confusing.
But yeah, the fandom in general does NOT like the idea that Afton was motivated by sexual desire at all, and there aren't any of the kinds of hints I would expect in the games. So I'm guessing that is not how it's supposed to be read.

People who were expecting something similar to the gameplay don't realize how extremely boring that would be

The books (there are 29 of them) also have separate lore, so it's common for the Fnaf media to differ from each other. I'm confused as to why that was such a shock to some fans, but I think those are newer fans. I will admit though the game lore is a fascinating storyline, so a part of me wanted to follow it a bit more but I'm still happy with it. Cause part of it is Mike is supposed to be William's estranged son and he's a nightguard under a fake name investigating the place after discovering his sister who passed away is possessing Circus Baby. And rather than feeling guilt for having his younger brother be kidnapped under his watch, he feels guilt for accidentally killing his younger brother because he wanted to pull a prank by putting him up to Golden Freddy's mouth which ended up closing on him (what the babysitter scene was referencing).

For the record, I'm 40 and I loved it. I've been a fan of the franchise for years, I fully admit that the lore of the games is complicated, convoluted and often contradictory. I also love the trilogy novels. So watching the movie it was kind of apparent to me that Scott Cawthon used bits from both the games and the novels to make the movie its own thing. People that are upset that it didn't stick to the game story completely, I'm sure it would have been difficult to translate the games into a movie, as evidenced by the many many scrapped scripts before this one was chosen. I like that this movie gives Mike a reason for taking and keeping such a horrible and crappily paid job: he had to have a job, any job, to keep custody of his sister. The game never makes who Mike is or why he wants to stay at the job clear. Later games add to his story but very little is actually confirmed by Scott, plus he has a habit of changing things and retconning so like I said, complicated. As for the kids, yes they are the spirits possessing the animatronics. Afton (Raglan/Spring Bonnie) stuffed their bodies in the suits, so yeah, haunted animatronics. The animatronics in the movie were made by the Henson company and are actually super accurate to the games, hence the awkward movements. The "too kiddy" parts, that people have issue with, just shows to me that they are still just kids, when their eyes go red, I think that's when Afton is influencing them. And Markiplier couldn't be in the film, though he was supposed to be the guard in the beginning of the film, because he was filming his movie Iron Lung at the same time. All in all, the movie is its own thing and should be watched as such, not as a one to one recreation of the games.

It's about the psychosis induced by the trauma of the losing of a family member. Mike and his brother, William Afton and his son. Mike is willing to make irrational decisions in a futile attempt to undo his failure to protect his little brother. William Afton turned to Necromancy to attempt to bring his son back from the dead. His son was killed by some kids in a freak accident when a prank goes wrong. Some kids at a birthday party held at Afton's first Pizzeria location stick his son's head into an Golden Freddy's animatronic mouth, causing fatal brain damage. Afton blames all children for what happened to his son.
Many people don't understand this lore is based on psychological horror from the perspective of a child's mind that has been warped by heinous murder. Venessa seems bipolar because she was made an accomplice to the kidnapping and murder of children and turning them into undead animatronics since she was a little girl. She wants her innocent childhood back but it keeps getting twisted with the sins of her father.
The older child ghost that is in Golden Freddy is "the child Afton should not have killed" as he turned out to be a sadistic psychopath. He is actually the reason Afton can't die and keeps coming back.

I would definitely watch a video of you exploring Fnaf lore. I think your takes on it would be gold!!!

I went in to the movie knowing just about as much as you did and I have to say, I really enjoyed it for what it was. I have gone ahead and looked more into the lore and in hindsight, I hope more of it is incorporated into the sequels but it doesn’t change that I had a great time. It wasn’t scary but the animatronics were just unsettling enough to have a couple creepy moments and it was super campy

Okay, as far as I know (only casually following the lore myself) aside from the actual animatronics, there were two wearable costumes with animatronic features, Golden Freddy and Golden Bonnie. Afton of course had the Bonnie suit and got trapped in it; but the fact that it was a "regular" costume and not an animatronic explains how Golden Freddy was able to move outside the range of the pizzeria. As much sense as it could make anyway. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    1) Petition for Amanda to either play the games or react to MatPat's 4 video saga detailing his timeline.
    2) I have been a fan for a while. Since it came out and every CZcamsr played it. I loved this movie because I went in with low expectations. I didn't believe that they were going to stay by the game lore. I believed that this would be what Scott Cawthon (the game creator) would have liked to have done since the beginning. When he made the first game, he never expected it to blow up like it did so the game had very little lore at all and no story planned. Once it blew up, he probably didn't know what to do with the story with his very little experience. I think that is why the lore is so jumbled. He doesn't know how long this will continue for so the story won't make sense anytime soon.
    3) I love the fnaf community for making so many memes from this movie.

I loved it so much. I’ve been a fan since the second game (was vaguely interested when the first game came out but didn’t get into it until the second).
The cute, innocent, kiddie moments are so very important for the overall film.

I think Plumhouse was perfect for the movie. The premise and lore are really silly yet convoluted, a higher budget production might have changed stuff too much to appeal to fans while also failing to get the fresh audience. After all, they tend to give game adaptations their "own spin ". Plumhouse doesn't take itself seriously. That why they're completely fine with a silly horror movie just filled with references for fans.

I'm not frequently into endless sequels but I think I'd love it for this series.

I LOVE that you covered this while wearing a Matthew Lillard / Skeet Ulrich shirt. I'm HERE for Matthew Lillard being our scream king, forever!!

Would also love to see a follow up video on the movie if you actually do a lore deep dive or just a video of you learning the lore
