It's kind of hard to have sympathy for an entire town holding a grudge against a 12yo child.
I feel like we are missing a scene because when Brynn killed Maude it was daytime. When we see the aftermath with Maude's father crying on the lawn, it's dark. What happened during that time gap? What did Brynn do? Did she try to hide Maude's body? Did she act like nothing happened and went back inside to do crafting with her mother? Did she leave Maude behind rotting in the grass for someone else to find her? Or worse of worse, what if the gap wasn't a few hours but a few days or even weeks? Just Maude rotting away while Brynn went on with life while the town went crazy looking for this missing girl. We don't know. And if it was that wide gap scenario where the whole town is looking for Maude while Brynn knew where she was this whole time, I can see the entire town turning on her. It doesn't matter if she was only twelve. I read in an interview where the director said he was inspired by homicide cases involving children including The Slenderman Stabbing. That case had two children, girls, who were Brynn's age when they tricked a friend to go into the forest with them. There they stabbed the other girl over and over again. Those girls were found guilty and won't be getting out of jail until well into their adult years. Again, I feel we aren't getting the full picture. Just Brynn's side of things. And the movie is trying to portray her as this cute quirky, shy young woman who is stuck in this big mean town. There has to be more.
@@mekkio77 y’all I was in the same mindset that background would’ve been good to actually understand the situation but it being ambiguous was nice. I totally might have missed something in the letters that were written but I wasn’t sure what they were fighting about in the forest. My mind immediately went to a boy at school with some dating situation but that’s just me being basic and thinking her getting the guy at the end had something to do with it. Idk I need to rewatch or just read more about the movie
My 12 yr old nephew was charged with making copycat school bang-bang threats right after the Oxford High incident. A 12 yr old I used to babysit used to say concerning violent things.. he ended up getting arrested as an adult for brandishing a weapon during a road rage incident while yelling racial slurs..... You shouldn't automatically paint every 12 yr old with a bad rep, but sometimes they are showing you who they really are.
I think the difference with Brynn is that it was an accident. Maude was her best friend, and they were having a spat, and it went horribly wrong. I agree there are kids that age that are capable of horrific things, but in Brynn case, especially because it wasn't her perspective per se, but the aliens exploring her memories, it was definitely an accident. The way she dealt with it afterward would've been a result of horror, shock, grief, guilt, and a myriad of other emotions. Also, she wasn't indicted, so it was probably ruled as an accident. So the entire town treating her like a pariah highlights the hate that always lingers in the mind of the myopic; always ready to leap out when someone lives a life outside of their personal ethics and ideals.
Some small towns are just like that. And considering it was the daughter of the sheriff who was presumably a beloved and powerful figure in town, and whose daughter was probably equally well known and loved, vs a seemingly single mom and her daughter, I could actually see it happening. Maybe not to this extent, but close enough to count
I understand how people say the alien design can be “goofy” but seriously, if THAT was in the same room with you, wouldn’t it be creepy still?
I thought it was really cool to kinda go with just the “traditional” alien design. It was something almost every viewer would already be familiar with so there really wouldn’t have to be any exposition about “are these aliens or something else”. Since they knew there wasn’t going to be any dialog about what was going on I think it was a nice shortcut.
It isn't a design. Like most alien abduction fiction, it is just a straight imitation or composite of eyewitness accounts of alien abduction, and sometimes from the military and intelligence officers who frequently approach screenwriters and producers to offer to tell them how to make the scenarios, technology and various real species 'more accurate'. They have done this to Stephen Spielberg, Bryce Zabel and less famous alien fiction creators too. The testimonies of many movie and TV creators about rogue military and Intel people saying they want help from them to "prepare the public" for eventually learning the truth, against the wishes of many others in the Intel and military top brass who want to officially ridicule and ostracise abductees forever rather than admit nobody is safe from it, are in the book Silver Saucers.
The horizontal levitating alien scene tells me this writer's ideas were not made up from nothing, because I have been levitated away by a different species of alien who was themselves horizontally levitating just like that. I have never seen that represented in fiction before (though I wouldn't have seen it even if it was out there because I don't watch any alien abduction movies or TV shows, never have done, it would be too upsetting) but it looks like it has been witnessed by other abductees too as the word has evidently reached the creators of this work. The leaked US government C.A.R.E.T document from 1986, called a particular small and high-precision levitation technology they had found in crashed ET vehicles "personal antigravity".

As an alien takeover story, I actually really like the way it ends. The idea of "the aliens find a really weird human that they end up fascinated with, and they take pity/mercy on that human, and they win in the end but the weird human is happy at least" is a surprisingly cute way to end a movie like this, even though we have no idea what happens with the rest of Earth. It's a nice tale about saving and forgiving yourself in the face of awful things you did, but also there's aliens. I like it.
Humanity gives us zero reason to feel sorry for them being taken over haha

If this WERE an alien takeover movie that'd be fine, but this movie is too busy trying to say something, which makes the ending horrible by implication.
I feel like “Kaitlyn Dever suffers” is becoming its own micro-genre.
Yup, Kaitlyn Dever having a really bad time of it is fast becoming my new favourite genre. She's really good at it.
Being in Dear Evan Hansen was a big part of it

Short Term 12. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring a terrific young cast including Brie Larson, Lakeith Stanfield and Rami Malek. It's about a home for troubled kids and Kaitlin Dever plays a young girl who discloses she is being horribly abused by her Dad. Brie Larson goes to kill the Dad, and KD is like, 'don't get yourself in trouble, I'll just suffer on my own.' Truly the Citizen Kane of Kaitlyn Dever Suffers movies. I make it sound miserable but it's really bloody brilliant and very funny. @@DucNguyen-ek4vq
I find it interesting that, at the end of the film, the aliens can forgive Brin for her acts of violence against them in a way that the townspeople couldn't. Sure, the whole self-defense aspect makes a big difference from a moral perspective, but the symmetry between Brin's original act of violence and her first lethal action against the first alien means I can't help but make the comparison.
(Not gonna lie, though, the thing that made me think of this in the first place was imagining Brin trying to awkwardly apologize to her new AlieNeighbors for killing a bunch of them.)
Is it forgiveness or admiration? My interpretation is that they respected her will to survive
Well, you know, all's fair in love and war. They probably expected there to be some casualties, so it goes. Her self defense was a pain in their ass but not unreasonable.
the scene where she stabs the alien in the head actually sold the entire movie for me. because even though alien, you could recognize the look of confusion on its face. like wtf this isn't supposed to happen.
That ending interests me. Imagine a cozy sci-fi story where Earth is taken over by aliens, but they're actually well chill. It's like a cozy fantasy story I'm writing where the zombie apocalypse is actually chill and it's rather peaceful to be a zombie actually.
Stephanie Meyer's The Host is actually exactly like that. Like, the aliens are just way better in every way than humans and when they take over planets, they just bond with their hosts

@@roxirock5455 I've only ever heard of it through YT reviews but iirc the main couple has a significant age difference, there's consent issues, and in the end an alien takes over the body of... a 14yo girl I believe? while in love with a guy in his late twenties or sth. So, yeah. Smeyer's gonna Smeyer.
It sort of reminds me of Warm Bodies, where you’re shown that their consciousness can be still in there, they’re just a bit sick
@@roxirock5455Yeah, it’s actually a very cool premise with lots of interesting morality questions, but for some reason she had to throw in some unfortunate age gaps. There’s really no good solution to the Edward/Bella age thing without fundamentally changing the story. But literally nothing would change in Host if she just tweaked a few ages.
I love when movies embrace the immoral or morally grey ending. It’s so fascinating and interesting
I think one thing to consider about the town’s hatred of Brynn is that it’s clearly a smaller town. Not a bustling metropolis or college town. And with small towns can come some very..close minded thought processes at times. Everyone knows everyone, and if tragedy strikes, there’s a tendency for people to jump on the bandwagon to hate the one who caused it, even if they’re a child, just because it’s easier to be part of the fold.
Oh yeah it's a thing, communities can be close knit which is great sometimes but it can be a hive mine.

Definitely very similar, but I'd argue Midsommar is a bit more ambiguous over whether it's a positive ending for Dani or not, whereas Brynn definitely has a happy ending with this film
Imagine the aliens come and are like, “ew gross no, we’re not taking this one that’s too messed up for us” and send you back lol. That’s next level rejection
Edit: I know it could be them seeing the trauma and putting her back for that reason but I thought it was funnier them thinking she was a threat because of the absolute brutal takedowns of the aliens and seeing that she did something to harm another human

I actually really, really liked it. I have a hard time getting immersed in movies, especially modern ones, because I have really bad APD, and the way sounds are mixed and actors speak makes it very hard for me to understand without subtitles. I was halfway through the movie when I realized I was actually watching it and processing everything that was happening and thats when I realized; I was no longer being distracted by dialogue. I wasn't trying to piece together what was being said or trying to read subs while watching. I don't even care if the movie was good (though I think it was pretty decent, gave some nice X Files vibes), I was just so flabbergasted to have been able to process and enjoy a movie the same way as everyone else. Never experienced that before

Sounds like you might enjoy movies that choose lower or no dialogue format, which is a bit rare but definitely a thing. Maybe something to look into!
There is an animated film called The Sisters of Belleville which has zero dialogue whatsoever. I thoroughly enjoyed that one

I think the main reason I liked this movie so much was that modern Hollywood seems to forget "show don't tell," and so the lack of hamfisted, verbalized exposition was such a relief.
I was kinda confused through the whole movie and felt that it should have told a small amount, although I do love how it good it was at showing everything

I’ve never been in ‘small town America’ but it seems wild to me that an entire town completely ostracized a literal child for years and years over a very tragic and horrible mistake. Or why Brynn’s mom didn’t leave the town when no one bothered acknowledging her daughter anymore?
Fictional movies set in small towns usually aren’t an accurate portrayal of what small towns are actually like. Just like movies in general are not representational of reality? Because it’s fiction?
Ngl small towns do just be like that unfortunately…. Even towards situations that arent nearly as tragic/harmful as a literal murder such as an autistic kid having a meltdown in public and “causing a disturbance” (and “possibly being possessed by a demon”) or a teenager accidentally not paying enough attention while babysitting and having a kid have a small allergic reaction under their watch (which is def more of a concern). Any deviation from the “norm” is heavily scrutinized and gossiped about and if it involves another kid (especially a more “normal” / liked kid from the town) then its considered especially evil using the same line of logic as - “How dare this WEIRDO / outsider risk damaging the future of their betters in any way, they must be evil!”
I dont think small towns anywhere are much different. Growing up in a small town in Europe this is kind of how i remember it. We didnt have a murder, but I can definitely remember ostracized kids and families for being "weirdos". As far moving I never really thought about it but I would guess guilt and lack of money. houses in small towns dont sell as easy or for much money. And I wonder if mom would think moving to another small town might just make Bryn the murderer that ran out of town. Even if no one knew there, it would be a weird expectation that Brynn who was already traumatized by the events would never tell anyone. I would guess her mom hoped they might be forgiven eventually instead of cementing their fate to be the hated people that killed the sherifs daughter and skipped town.
They can be just like this, granted there are variations but they can kinda turn into a hive mind
What breaks it for me is the thing they had to do to sell it with their premise. They desperately want this to be nonverbal. So they have to really ham it up to sell it to most people. Which is the exact opposite of what'd actually happen in a situation like this.
Sure, you'd see the parents completely flip at her, maybe try to attack her, chase her away, scream at her etc. But the other people would likely just avert their eyes, switch to the other side of the street, maybe whisper to each other behind her back as she passes. It'd be a lot less overt and way more in the realm of how you'd gossip.
And yes, a mom in that situation would 100% leave. You have children moving for simply having shit go wrong in school a few too many times. If that murder accident happened, any sane mom would know that's it for this town and would want to move. Not just because she'd be ostracized, but because the town itself would be a constant reminder of the time she spent with that friend and how it's all gone now.
The movie was a fun thought experiment, but not much more. The ending is pretty much the best it has going for it, because it's a nice breath of fresh air and rather than the umpteenth story about "I learnt how to forgive myself", just with some "btw nobody talks" flourish on top, I'd have liked to see the life in this alien world as a normal human.
I like that they used typical alien depictions in very atypical ways while not really humanizing them. They seem like actual individual beings with quirks and mannerisms instead of "Grey Type A", "Grey Type B", etc. You could say their different morphologies may have influenced this, but even the similar "standard" Greys seem to approach things differently. The one investigating her seemed very different than the initial attacker.
I love the detail that her handwriting is way more refined after ten years of letters.

What I got from the ending and how it explains the title is that "no one will save you, besides yourself" she forgives herself for killing her friend maude and it seems the aliens are trying to help her figure that out along with all other humans. Notice the entire town also forgave Brynn and maybe the concept was also to "forgive yourself before others can forgive you". Aliens just used their way of "helping" humanity but looks entirely scary, taboo, and unknown to us.
The entire town didn't forgive her, I think you missed something. They sent her back without taking over her mind and body and allowed her to live with the other townsfolk who were taken over to give her a break after what she'd been through. The townsfolk were just puppets at that point and she got to live in her happy little world.

I can see why you have that theory but I disagree because Brynn also was controlled at a point and who's to say that she's not also a puppet thinking that she's normal again.
I disagree with your theory only because of the ending it shows that everyone was released and the aliens goal was to have Brynn forgive herself I'm assuming they did the same with all the town folks. I just can't see why the aliens would possess an entire town of people to accommodate one lonely girl for a mistake she made murdering her friend that she couldn't get over. Not to mention she killed like 3 aliens I believe in the movie and that's how they reward her lol.

Totally on her side not trying to help anyone in that town. What a bunch of POSs (other than, as you said, Maude's family who would have a right to never let go of that grudge), making a child a pariah for life over a horrible accident/mistake. It could just as easily have been the opposite way around and Maude could have been the one accidentally killing Brynn in a moment of anger if she'd fallen differently and bashed her head on the same rock and been just as unlucky in where it struck.
When I was a 12 year old, I still knew what would happen if I hit someone with a fucking rock.

I loved this movie. I had not seen the trailer and watched going in blind. I was incredibly impressed. Was really great. Didn’t hurt that I am already a huge fan of Kaitlyn Dever and watched it mostly because she was the star. I felt like the movie was about forgiveness. Brynn needed to be forgiven and no one would do it, so she just stayed in the town I think because she really needed them to forgive her and maybe she thought it would happen eventually. But as she found out she had to not only “save” herself but “forgive” herself as well.
I really like this interpretation. My mom also loved the movie, I thought it was ok, but seeing it from this perspective makes it better. My mom forgives easily, and so do I, so maybe that’s why.

I watched this movier earlier today with my friends and we honestly really enjoyed it, i loved the lack of dialouge and the sound and creature design so much.
Was anyone else convinced right up until the third act that this movie was an alien-centric version of the trolley problem? I thought that the aliens targeted someone to take, but if you didn't go willingly they'd kill or take everyone in their path. I was certain that was why the whole town and Maude's parents were SO angry with Brynn, because she refused to go willingly, and thus had inadvertently caused the deaths of Maude and many others because of it. I was waiting for it to turn into a morality tale at any point, and then... Well I wasn't expecting that!
I disagree and I think that's entirely incorrect. if you payed close attention to the movie, everyone is mad at Brynn because she killed her friend Maude. They literally show you a memory when she's aboard the ship with the aliens of her fighting with maude picking up a rock and striking her head. She then forgives herself and that's what the aliens were trying to do because they release her back to earth having done no harm to her. Everyone likes Brynn again because she more than likely reconciled with town and since the alien agenda was to "show forgiveness" everyone ended up forgiving her in the town. That why th ending is all happy because everyone learned how to forgive each other and live happy together that was the literal moral of the story I'm just surprised you missed all of that and thought it's just because she didn't want to be abducted.

That theory doesn't make sense to me at all and I personally think all the towns folk went through the same process Brynn did with forgiveness and that's why they're all happy I don't think the aliens purpose was to control the town. It was to help the entire town learn forgiveness and live happy together.

I was kind of shocked when the movie revealed exactly how Maude died. I expected the typical "Brynn survived something that Maude didn't, and everyone thinks she left Maude behind." That's usually how stories like this go, so we'll see that it wasn't REALLY the main character's fault. Here, it's not that it wasn't Brynn's fault (Even her age isn't really an excuse - 12 year olds fight all the time, but hitting someone in the head with a rock?!) It's that she's genuinely remorseful.
When I was 5, my mother incercepted me about to slam a large bell-like tub toy against my friend Jenny's head, but five is not old enough to realize that this object to cause serious damage and have irrevocable consequences. A 12 year old, though, does understand that.
I feel like movies use to be this, I assumed she had killed her in self defense, or doing something dumb as kids
@@moonlily1idk about understand they hear about it, but also know that you can get your head hit and be fine. Impulse control isn't something preteens or teens are known for having a good grasp on. They know about it sure, but they don't believe it will happen to them.
I actually enjoyed how simplistic the aliens were. I feel like so many modern alien movies try to have different interpretations of alien life form that it’s actually refreshing to keep it just a “normal” looking alien.
One thing I didn’t like about this movie was the lack of dialogue. When she walked into the police station and not a word was spoken I was almost screaming at the tv like “SAY SOMETHING!!!”. But overall this was a really fun alien movie. Definitely would recommend!
I got the sense by the end of "hey, this young woman has seen some shit, she's in charge of that town now, go for it!"
I like the aliens. They aren't scary, but kinda cute. Haven't watched it yet, but from this, it feels kind of like a "dealing with trauma when the only tools people provide you is a very unhelpful religion" vibe
Hmm, the most similar premise i would say is The Worlds End, the ending is different, but the idea of the aliens trying to make things better is interesting.
I thought we were gonna find out the friend was still alive, but was taken by the aliens, and the main normal proportions alien was actually her friend turned into an alien
yess !!! i thought this too bc i noticed in some scenes the aliens seemed rlly focused on the pics of brynn and maude. so maybe the night maude died she didnt die right away and the aliens either took her and she became one or they replayed maude’s perspective of that night so now they remember

Spontaneous is one of my favorite movies of all time and really helped me come to terms with unrelenting grief. At the time I watched it many of my friends and classmates from high school and college (which I was in at the time) had unexpectedly died and I felt like I could die at any moment too, something about the movie really captured how I felt and the main character's arc really resonated with me. I would definitely recommend it, I'm sure people won't necessarily connect with it personally in the way I did, but it is a really special movie to me
i haven't seen the movie but read the book, and i felt the same way despite my friend getting the book for me as a joke. comedy-horror that resonates with the grief you carry, gotta be one of my favourite genres

Interesting concept for a movie, chill start for the scary season. My only wish for this Halloween season is for Amanda to cover Living for the Dead, the new queer ghost hunting show produced by Kristin Stewart. I'm ready for that show to become my personality when it drops hahaha
20:04 this moment, this particuliar scene is a game changer for me. You see a big alien doing a weird dance, and a bodysnatched guy is dragging her by the hair to this God in the sky (the space ship which is just adored by the aliens and is for me the real alien mastermind). The dance the alien does, the signs it makes, I'm pretty sure that those are ancient Rune symbols.
15:21 very good point, and you can also say that she kill the alien with the opposite hand, so her madness begin with the right hand and right swing and the start of her new journey into a new madness begin with the left hand and left swing.
Something about this hit me really hard.
I made some impulsive selfish decisions when I was a preteen/young teenager and hurt people (emotionally). I struggle to let go and forgive myself and I’m now twenty four, and no one died or anything serious happened.
Such an interesting and dramatized way of telling an undertold story
I have a soft spot for little greys. Sometimes they're cute and sometimes they're creepy, and sometimes they're hilarious. Each dead alien brings new joy to killing aliens and then they finally respect each other enough to stop the violence and accept each other. It was almost heartwarming in a dark comedy way. They had more empathy for her than her fellow humans. She couldn't accept a false idea of herself and her life, and they respect that. I mean, what is a utopia without diversity? She's a great community member that just needed the opportunity to be accepted as more than her mistakes
So no one will save the towns people because she's happy with how the aliens have made them and now she gets to live things how she wants. So if someone tries to save the towns people she may try to defend the aliens.
A good sequel could be her trying to kill or turn over any outsiders who may notice that things are off when they come to town. That way she gets to keep her status quo.
At first when we see the alien in her house I was very confused as to if it was friendly or violent. When she stabbed it I genuinely felt bad because I did start to convince myself it was trying to help her or just curious. I loved that uncertainty. Something else I liked were the different designs for the alien and the body language. We’ve all watched an alien invasion before and barely see the body language get taken into consideration but they definitely did here. Yeah the effects weren’t great but because of the other things that they factored in it convinced me and had me feeling a little creeped out. There’s so much I adore about this film. I hadn’t even noticed that there was barely any dialogue until after taking a minute to think about it. It’s amazing
My first thought after watching was this story could have made a cool addition to the Cloverfield universe.
This and Evil Dead to this moment are my favorite horror from the year idk what it is about NWSY that struck such a strong cord with me (maybe the loneliness tone and small town setting I guess), few movies get to occupy such a space in my head yet there it is
On paper this film sounds a lot like Hush and A Quiet Place. I am biased because I love Mike Flannigan but Hush is amazing and underrated in my opinion
Small towns.... what can I say? All it takes is for one to hate you, and they will convert the rest of the town against you, which takes a *lot* of work. It looks like a worthwhile watch, and thank you for the candid review.
Didn’t expect this analysis essay from here but this was so good and definitely vibes with a lot of what I felt. Small town trauma is one thing I somehow never thought of for my Letterboxd.
As someone with attention issues, this movie really had me gripped from the beginning, i think the lack of dialogue really gave me room to fully immerse myself in the story and keep me interested. Sometimes dialogue forces your attention away from mood and atmosphere but i was fully able to keep up with the movie and stay interested. I didn't love this movie, but i definitely liked it enough that i'd watch it over and over again.
I feel like the movie set up the perfect alien romance and I was so mad she didn’t date an alien. Like I was waiting for the alien to try and follow the steps for the dance she was doing in the beginning and that be the moment but alas… we got whatever this was. I really hated this movie but I did have a great time watching it. The ending had me absolutely hollering alone in a hotel room.

Another great movie with no dialogue whatsoever is The Bra, a movie from Azerbaijan, which is actually a lot more wholesome than the title or synopsis might suggest! Basically, an old, retiring train conductor finds a bra stuck on his train that fell off a laundry line, and can’t stop thinking about the woman it must belong to. As he retires and finds he is lonely, he decides to find out who it belongs to, in hopes of finding romance, and various hijinks ensue. In the end, he finds something else much more meaningful.
Some viewers might find his behavior a bit offputting, as he is a much older man pursuing mostly younger women and does a few questionable things on his quest to find out who fits the bra, but it never feels genuinely creepy/skeezy/predatory and I think it just comes down to cultural differences. It’s a funny, sweet, beautiful film and I think more people should see it! Especially because all the actors manage to express so much emotion and intent without any dialogue, it really is impressive and opens the film up for international viewers since there’s no language barrier!
Can you explain how the festivals work when you go? Like do you have a ticket to all the films at TIFF or do you have to pick and choose between the ones you really wanna see? Unless you have a video on that.

I really enjoyed it. I've always been into the whole alien invasion theme so there's that. I thought it was quite well done, with a different spin on how to go about it.
I feel like she should have been narrating/talking to Maude during the events of the film.
For the costuming I got the vibe that she had been away for a few years before her Mom died and she moved into her mom’s bedroom(leaving her childhood room intact) and was wearing her mom’s clothes.
I feel like the lack of dialogue was a huge point though. And also I think she had more of a thing for vintage stuff. Notice she didn’t have a cell phone, but a Rotary phone lol

I loved this movie so much. I actually was so in grossed I thought it was short for a film.
The ending was my fav. The acting was wonderful and it was the best acting of social anxiety ive ever seen.
It was also a great movie about forgiving yourself and finally living again

i REALLY liked this movie! i thought the way they showed the alien obscured in the background was always really cool and a great way to build tension! i thought overall the visuals and alien design was really cool and i liked the ending a lot!

I really enjoyed this, on Disney in uk, the fight scenes were awesome!! I loved how “real” and gritty they were, I didn’t have any “what are you doing?” Moments (except the police station scene), and the profession of her arch was brilliant to watch.
I loved this movie. I thought it was well acted, the stunts were great and I loved the aesthetic of Brynn and her house. I even liked the end.
I was shocked how into this movie I was, I didn't expect to enjoy it due to the whole no dialogue thing and alien aspect but I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't completely understand the whole thing with her friend but all in all I found it visually fascinating and surreal

Honestly the trailer scared me in a strange way: the way the title card starts to stretch really gave me an eerie feeling, more so than any of the stuff actually shown in the trailer
I love just seeing a movie in your thumbnail and going, I'm going to watch that. No knowledge about what it is, what it's about, just you spoke about it, and now I'm curious. I quite enjoyed it, I didn't mind the effects [I thought they were quite good? And it was kinda nice seeing a 'monster' a bit more, made a change]. I also took forever to realise just how little speech there was, but there was enough noise to keep me from turning it off [I can't do silence], and I really expected Maude to appear from the alien's ship for most of the movie.
You've introduced me to both D.E.B.S and Spontaneous and I love them both. Can't wait for you to do videos on them.

I loooovvvveeeed this movie Kaitlyn Dever was brilliant she didn't need dialogue we were able to feel everything she was feeling super easily. The aliens had a super basic grey alien design but they were still horrifying especially the giant one. The aliens deciding she wasn't a threat was really silly since she literally killed four of them lol but I definitely believe she deserved to have that better life after everything she went through. I think the aliens and effects look pretty great for low budget tbh

I like the alternate idea that she's dead. She got stabbed multiple times in the woods by her alternate. a little later there's that scene where she's laying on the ground staring up and you can tell there's lights above her. Some theories are that she dies, those lights are her brain shutting down and halucinating and the end scene dancing with the aliens is a fantasy fabricated by her brain as a coping mechanism as she slowly dies from blood loss.
Near the end of the movie, I thought the plot twist was going to be that she was an alien herself as she didn't really talk, just like the aliens weren't talking in human languages.

The set up was interesting, but it felt like they really had no way to really end it, so they just went overboard, and that just made me feel really underwhelmed because "Direct to Digital" movies tend to do that alot these days. Have a interesting idea, with no real ending.

Aliens scare me ever since I was a kid and watched Signs, so I was nervous this whole movie and I honestly loved it
Highly recommend also watching Roanoke Gaming's analysis of this movie, as he goes into the science of the movie and the aliens' species and how they likely work. And probably why the aliens let her be.

It was definitely a YA version of a sci-fi horror where everything is a very service level version of adult themes and twists and everything where it is just the idea of something but not really deep enough to be actually deep and traumatic and scary.
