Also, for anyone that knows or relates or doesn't. When your brain no longer receives oxygen, you have about a minute and under 2 minutes before that lack of oxygen starts to destroy your brain.
I know this personally because I have 2 TBIs, 3 sections of my brain no longer receive oxygen, meaning they are essentially dead.(I'm actually not supposed to he as functional as I am and 1 more will kill me or permanent vegetative state.)
This lends the credence that this movie is a straight up homage to drug use. I have dead friends from it and I've never and never will be someone into drugs. After my accident they wanted me of hard pain killers I told them I'd rather just suffer and I did.
Show this movie to a recovering heroin addict, it's basically a love letter to the horrors of drugs. The whole situation of Miya being close to the younger brother makes sense as addiction will destroy the most vulnerable attached to you, first. The way the mom enabled the entire time and took no accountability for tragedy. The way the friend who's life seemed in order refused to give hard truths out of fear of telling her friend what they had to hear rather than what they wanted. This entire movie is an allegory to the true damages of drug addiction.
I can make it a bit more real. The ritual of grabbing the hand and allowing it to let you in, is how a lot of addicts romanticize their use, what happened on or off or direct or proximity. Addicts romanticize their use, hence why they write 'love letters' to their drugs. Addicts will sit sround and romanticize how their friends perished and then laugh at the good times of past while the present is crumbling, through the drugs.
I enjoyed this movie because of the end.
Because, through the deaths of the Addicts, their memories are kept alive when Addicts still breathing romanticize their deaths. Unable to fully move on because so many continuously become trapped in the horrors of their addictions.
When your brain is slept for over 90 seconds, irreversible brain damage is done. I live on a "50 first dates" schedule. I have to have shit sround my apartment to remind me of shit I did yesterday.
This is a major reason I have never wanted or had the urge to do drugs lmao. You can SLCPunk yourself real fast.

One theory that I love is that the second spirit Mia sees, the larger woman who looks like she drowned (the same one Mia "let in" for more than 90 seconds), is the spirit impersonating her mom. You may notice in the sound design that every time her mom comes on screen, there are weird bubbles and water sounds, and her mom gets more and more wet and grotesque as the movie goes on! Yuck

Yeah I think if we’re looking through the lens of this movie being a metaphor for addiction it’s supposed to be a representation of people using drugs to escape their grief and those who choose not to use the escape are forced to suffer more because they have to work twice as hard to heal alone/without the help or support their loved ones that chose to be addicts

    • @Raccocooney

Except the fact that he kept his wife's suicide a secret from her while she was clearly in denial of the blatant truth kept a wedge between them. I keep wondering with the spirits that are contacted throughout the movie if they’re actually the spirits of real people or some demon disguising itself, but with that ending and the world we saw Riley in, I think they’re real people who have become so twisted and corrupted by the spirit world that they become altered against their will to the point of no longer having their former humanity. This movie just has so many layers of brutality stacked one on top of the other oof…

I was expecting this to be like most possession movies where everyone gets fucked by the end but by the middle or so it became more clearly a personal story about Mia and her struggles so while the ending is very... unfortunate for Mia, I was really happy that Jade and her family make it out fine. *SPOILERS*
I love how hands in this movie tie into the theme of connection. Mia's previous "relationship" was holding hands with Danny. Even as weak of a connection as that is, it's still something she thinks about and wants. Her mom's fingers having been damaged while trying to get out of the room also appear on her at the end when she's trying to reach out to her loved ones. Then, of course, there's the actual hand in the movie. It's the most basic contact when meeting people, to take their hand, and this is a great way to twist it into something perverse. In trying to escape the negative feelings, she's made this unwilling connection to these spirits that ends up consuming her.

I like that Mia's character arc is essentially what happens if you can't come to terms with losing a loved one. She spirals out of control, tries to seek solace in the euphoria the hand/seeing her "mom" gives her (not unlike people who spend loads of money on mediums trying to talk to their dead loved ones, on top of the drug allegory) and in the end she ends up dead, which, if her mom really did commit suicide, can be read as Mia succumbing to the same thing as her mom since the mom died of a drug overdose. "She would come to set in like a bit of a fractured headspace."]
That's dangerous. It isn't okay. We've seen actors nearly killed by lack of sleep, not even that long ago. Trust your actors to do their bloody job and stop making unsafe requests that you know they won't argue because you're in control of the production. Michael at least seems to get it.

I like that you can use different interpretations as to what happened to her father. Some people saw it as him leaving the hospital after her death and the door closing to the world of the living, leaving Mia in to remain in this empty, dark void. When I fiirst watched the movie I felt the father must have succumbed to his wounds in the end and, while Mia got to watch the other patients in the ward go home with their loved ones, she had to watch him move on to the afterlife/peace. The world around her turns darker and the light of the elevator is the only thing left, her father steps into that light and the door closes behind him. Denying Mia the same peace he found and contrasting where souls are supposed to go, to where she ended up: a purgatory with no way out but to hope for a candlelight to to draw her in.

Just saw it and before the movie there was like 3 separate drug PSAs. Thought it was really weird at the time lol. I wasn’t surprised by the ending but it was very sad. I also liked how despite everyone using the hand over and over again, Mia was the only one who got addicted. It’s a very real depiction of addiction and how even using drugs once recreationally at a party can lead you down the worst path. But the movie does it with such nuisance and grace that those dumb tobacco commercials wish they could have. I also like how the teens spoke like real teens and weren’t boomerified.

Idk if anyone paid enough attention at the end of the movie but the kids we fallowed had the left hand
When Mia is a spirit and the other guy says “talk to me” I think she used her right hand meaning that we’re getting a glimpse of where the other hand is and honestly that’s dope
If they did another movie based on the other hand and built on top of what’s already there in a way that was like the spirits claimed by the right hand can be communed with threw the left hand and vise versa and how each hand respectfully warps and twists the souls they take in different ways that could be cool and maybe even a way to brake the curse could be getting both hands and doing the ritual at the same time and u speak to the psychic or satanist who’s hands they were and that’s the final confrontation
I’m only saying this because I loved the movie and it gave me something to think about and I enjoy thinking about this stuff 100% just a thought I was having fun with

THE ENDING! I interpreted differently and even more brutal . Since we don’t actually see how Mia ended up hitting the car I think SHE jumped into oncoming traffic in order to be with the spirit who she thought was her mother. The “mom” spirit told her “do this to Riley and I’ll take care of him forever” so she was so desperate to be with her mom she took his place. When she was looking for her mother in the hospital she realized she was lied to. Or 2) the spirit completely took over Mia and when it touch her shoulders it fully possessed her and made her jump. Just like in Riley who wanted to hurt himself when gaining conscience and the boy in the beginning. (Edit: btw just want to say I took my grandma to watch this movie and she was such a good sport and probably the only elderly person there)

Saw this yesterday & I loved it. The scene with Riley was so brutal and disturbing I had to look away. I lost patience with Mia when she allowed Riley to go over the time because she wanted to talk to her mother. It's tragic that she ended up in purgatory because of her grief.

Strongly agree, this film was awesome!! Especially that sound design... even when they were just playing and smacking pillows, the sound was BRUTAL. Even when Mia hit her head over and over... no blood or gore in that scene, but... OUCH! The sound made me feel that. Amazingly visceral.
Also, I'm not sure if you've heard of this, but there was a scene that was originally 2 minutes 30 seconds long. **SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN IT. IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, JUST GO SEE THIS FILM! RACKARACKA PULLED IT OFF. DON'T SPOIL IT FOR YOURSELVES!**
    OK, 3, 2, 1, spoiler talk.
    ...
The original hell vision sequence was so graphic and long that rackaracka had to really cut it down, but at the same time, they thought it was too gratuitous anyways. They said it showed a LOT more of hell, and maybe some stuff not involving Riley, and it was over 2 minutes. I personally feel it was the right call to cut it out/down. The other gore/visceral scenes had impact and weight, but 2 minutes and a half of hell torture does seem too far and "gore for gore's sake". Probably would've been NC-17 anyways. Danny in an interview said "maybe" they'll show that deleted scene someday, but if they did I might be hesitant to see it, from how it sounds they went too far. Curious what people think about that.
Overall, it was a really great indie horror with great pacing, great characters, great performances, and a top-notch concept with intense, visceral impact. Hope Sophie Wilde becomes a star! And whatever rackaracka does next is a MUST see!

So when she got up when she got up and then they cut to the hospital I think they rush her body to the hospital and as she was walking by and seeing everything, everything was moving so fast. With her dad, I think he survived and he kept going to the hospital to go see her, as he was walking away, he was giving up on her, or he wanted her to move on. That's why when he full left, she went in straight darkness because they pull the plug on her and she actually died 🤷🏽‍♂️

I was thinking when she couldn’t kill riley in the hospital, that she would maybe take his hand & say “talk to me”, letting the spirit take her instead. Especially because the spirit asked her to touch her/said she wanted to feel her touch. But then it cut to the scene of her wheeling riley out to the freeway. This lead me to think that the spirit knew she couldn’t kill the brother (reflected in the kangaroo in the hallway), so they took her to where she could kill herself instead & possessed her (the moment when the spirit grabbed her shoulders) instead somehow. Which would explain the spirit asking for mia to touch her in the scene just before

    • @emolie123
      @emolie123 Před 9 měsíci +2

And the theory someone posted that the first spirit she saw, the one who appeared to have drowned, was just mimicking her mom the whole time. Hence the gurgling/bubbling noises her mom would make & how she got progressively more bloated throughout the movie. The spirit stayed 1 second longer than it was supposed to. However it was enough to linger around very distantly. And because it could see her traumas, it used them to manipulate mia & to get mia “hooked” on the hand, strengthening the connection.

I like this twist but in my mind, wouldn't it be easier for the possessor to use the scissors Mia had and kill herself just like in the first scene with the brothers? I believe there is a parallel with the kangaroo and Mia understanding in a split second to showcase Riley to take herself out of her misery as Riley suggested for the kangaroo. She may have also realized in a moment the danger she is posing to Riley. Ex: Daniel telling her she was sucking on his toes while she adamantly believed it wasn't the case.

and the fact that in a few short seconds (in Mia’s perspective) riley is all of a sudden healed and leaving the hospital, and then in even a shorter amount of time everyone she knew is probably also dead because of how much time seems to have passed. It’s also likely that nobody knows that this happened to her

Much love to you, Amanda, for this deep dive. Talk To Me is killing it at the box office, and it's getting rave reviews, but your analysis is the most honest, sophisticated, and conscious out there. Thank you again for recognizing the brilliance of this soon-to-be horror classic.

That damn sound design! Riley's possession, the heartbeats before silenced in the letter scene all so well done

One thing I really like is how hollowed out the candle is. Just a little detail as to how many times they've done the ritual!

A24 just does EVERYTHING right. I fucking love them. I'm going to watch it tomorrow, on the release date here in Norway. I don't have much money at all, I live on the lowest grade of payments from the Norwegian social services, and a movie ticket here is *incredibly* expensive - especially when you have as little money as I do. But as soon as a new A24 movie comes out that I feel I need to see on a big screen, I pay to see them. Even if that means I'll have to live on lentils, rice and/or ramen for the last week/two weeks of the month.
They are worth supporting, and since I got clean from drugs 3 years ago, this is my only vice - and it's a helluva lot better than heroin and speed is ;P So even though people say that it's very stupid of me to use that amount of money on movies, when I just don't have the funds, I don't give a shit. This gives me happiness, movies are the best thing in the world when they are done RIGHT. And A24 are ethical, so I feel good funding them too. There's no losses in this, only wins to my eyes! :)

When I saw the trailer for this movie I was genuinely excited for it!! Also, I somehow couldn't help but remember that story of the monkey palm granting wishes but the wishes don't turn out how the person wants it to

    My theory for the ending:
I think her father did in fact die, but him walking into the elevator and leaving Mia was symbolism for him going to an after-life whereas Mia is trapped in with the hand or in limbo.
