honestly, Conan during the writer's strike was some incredibly good TV, he was so good at illustrating how necessary the writers were while still making the show entertaining. he did a lot of interviews with his staff, iirc. like that was the start of him messing with jordan schlansky all the time. that and NBC fucking him over showed just how funny he could be under duress.
not just the fact that she spend her entire childhood in hollywood but the actual suffering that followed, especially after firestarter. she actively had real issues for years and had to step away from hollywood entirely. her talk show was the first thing she really did since she stepped back. the only perspective she has on workers rights is regarding active abuse the way she endured. she knows nothing of unfair compensation
@@MrsAnnThropy i mean sure, but abuse and drug addiction aren't what insulated her from the working class, it was the whole "being born into a famous family and getting nepotism'd into high paying jobs as a literal baby" that did _that._
It frustrates me so much when they cry about all the other staff. That's the whole point of a strike, it's supposed to get in the way. If you care so much about your staff, then you'd care about supporting your writers. Like yeah, the production crew and everyone involved isn't working right now, but neither are the writers on strike. The real way to get all your staff back into work is by putting pressure on the studios to work with the unions
maybe i'm stupid............... but if i was that wealthy and i was concerned my staff weren't getting paid, i'd just.... pay them while on strike? is that going against the strike? like if she was *actually* concerned she could monetarily help them, AND use her connections in the industry to help with negotiations so the strike would end earlier...? i am but a Poor Man, i don't know what i'm talking about.
this has been bothering me SO much lately. people don’t know how a strike is done anymore. they stand with the strikers but the strike is inconvenient for them so they don’t understand that the need for convenience is supposed to be outweighed by the need for a proper quality of life. it is insane times we’re living in
Me: giving us money would help, we need more Everyone: but you already make money so .... get another job.. CEOs: yeah just work harder! Dig a little deeper, like Tiana!
it’s so wild seeing people say they stand with the strike but also say they don’t feel like it should be so inconvenient for everyone. like… u ever hear of a strike?
@@Leo_Pard_A4 and that's the corruption. Money and shelter should be rights not a commodity or choice, since some people don't get options. They're forced to be a pizza boy or be homeless, starving, etc. I don't expect you to care, but you should, and thing could be different if you help instead of be that apathetic.
These days all I hear when these people 'apologize' is "PLEASE GUYS DONT STOP GIVING ME MONEY!! I SWEAR I WILL ONLY CONTINUE DOING THE THING YOURE MAD AT ME FOR, BUT MORE SECRETIVELY!!"
“ I believe there’s is nothing I can do or say in this moment to make this ok” that’s a false statement. You could stop promoting and producing your show. You could stand with the writers. You could be an example for other celebrities to follow. It’s not complicated or complex. It’s as plain as day: either stand with the people who you acknowledge are suffering or just expect the fact that you don’t give a shit about them and be honest about it. Stop being a neop baby and stand up for something bigger than yourself.
that line was the wildest part to me lol personally i do believe that she ~thinks~ she’s standing up for something bigger than herself by continuing. she’s just fuckin wrong about that lol. she is truly a unique case of being a talk show host. when she started the show, the worlds slogan was “we’re in this together” and that’s what she wanted her show to emphasize. she thinks (due to her lack of perspective) that this is still an appropriate application for that mentality. but workers on strike for their rights is not something to just push through until it’s over, that is obviously against the point. she feels like the show is as inspirational for everyone else as it is to her. almost every guest gushes about how inspirational they find her, so i see where it comes from. in a way, i feel bad that she has so little of anything else that she needs this show so much. but i also don’t really sympathize with a God Complex activated by stroking someone’s ego onscreen. and i certainly don’t empathize with pretending to be so helpless here. shits gross and i’m glad she backtracked, even after the damage she did.
If I had Drew Barrymore's spider a-hole ceiling pattern, it'd probably make me wanna flee my house too. Hopefully she can throw some of her millions of dollars into repainting that thing or else you just know she'll fall under an Uzumaki style curse where she's consumed by spiders
Listen, Im not personally invested in this, but young people are pretty strong in their suppirt of unions and going back on air will do more damage to her reputation than just following the wishes of the writers guild.
i have no idea why the algo recommended one of your videos to me, but you seem like a completely normal and chill person. I hope you stay that way because after 3 videos, I think your my new *put on in the backround while i'm doing other stuff* channel.
god you're so much easier to watch than your brother, i had to unsub from him. You really are so level-headed and easy to listen to, love it man keep up the good work! you'll blow up more over time for sure
She could have used her platform to advocate for the workers. Interviews on her social media with people who are picketing, spotlighting her writers, whatever. I get that her superiors at the company would probably be putting massive pressure on her but idk man
that disappointed me a LOT too. like… this whole process was bad and how no one sat her down and actually asked what she’s thinking is beyond me. what i really don’t understand is why she didn’t do what conan did… she has the *perfect* show for it. textbook perfect, they already don’t talk about serious topics. she could’ve made the WHOLE season advocating for writers and people would have listened. i think drew barrymore couldve gotten the attention of hollywood execs. but she just went balls deep in sweeping it under the rug because she finds her identity in this show. shits insane how strikes are nearly meaningless today. i don’t get it
@@em84cOMG! This makes so much sense why i got similar vibes but i like him way more. He seems more kind and empathetic. I feel on teh fence with Nick. perhaps i jsut enjoy a calmer tone more lately.
Celebrity baby Barrymore needs writers to write her an apology, can’t even come up with a decent one herself. How did she think she was gonna run a show without them?
ok hate me about it buuuut i actually like the show lol i’d never go out of my way to watch it but when i have watched it, it’s really wholesome and she’s very kind. i think the fact that she’s gone through what she has and the amount of people that tell her how inspired they were by her activated a kind of God Complex™️ that she didn’t really have when she started the show originally. to her, she sees it as continuing to uplift spirits bc “we’re all in this together” but it’s not the time for that anymore
i realize this sounds like i’m justifying her actions and i am not, i’m fully appalled that she would even try this. i can just see why she thought it wouldn’t be *that* bad. i’m really disappointed in her and lost some respect. i hope she feels humbled by this experience and truly understands what the strike means now, so she can advocate for her writers. she would be a great ally.
She's worth 125 million alone, that's not mentioning what the Barrymore family is worth. Her parents are still alive and her relatives that have passed were worth a ton of money. I'm guessing once her parents pass, some of that massive amount of money in the Barrymore family will go to her, making her even more loaded. My point is, she should have brought some writers back on (WITH A RAISE) and paid them out of her own damn pocket. I would if I were that loaded. 125 million and going is more than enough money than anyone will ever need in their lifetime. People are struggling everywhere. Writers and animators do not make that much! Neither do music artists these days. Those contracts they sign are garbage, and the money goes to their manager and record label! The artist might get 5 cents per royalty.
If you go back and watch any interviews of hers when she is uncomfortable or upset, she smiles. It's probably a coping mechanism she learned early. It's actually very similar to the way some actually laugh when scared or nervous. While it seems out of place... it's reaction-action. Not to mention, I'm sure all her life, literally a baby when her parents put her into the business, she's been told, "Smile. Just keep smiling. Don't let them see you're nervous. Don't let them see you upset. Put that smile on." Can you imagine being trained to be a smiling, reciting little bot? No wonder she ended up in a institution.
I have a friend over seas who’s cousin does a lot of the costume designs for marvel and all and sadly they have been telling me and there cousin horror stories about what’s going on in the industry. It’s sad really. Yeah there are some funds out there but most of it is just commissions and trying to pick up jobs now. It’s ridiculous, and it’s sad to see drew slowly turning into Ellen….but can’t say I didn’t see it coming
Saw you reccomend nick's video on the love surge so I went to watch it real quick so I wouldnt forget. It was so uncomfortable what the hell. its just cringe culture. honestly no hate to you. You hadnt seen the video at this point. Id love to see your take on thay situation even though its been weeks. I feel like maybe you wouldnt call people threatening to SA the woman "jokes" like nick did.
I can sympathize with the writers but during the strikes other people that work for the show like production are out of work. So im willing to give her some slack. She couldve been advocating for the writers to CBS or whoever(i dont watch her show) but if they didnt agree what else is she supposed to do?
To add to this, she like Bill, likely did pay her production staff to help during the strike but most of these people worth such and such millions of dollars is all tied up in assets not actual money in the bank. Idk I don't feel she did this out of malice or greed but what she believed to be the right course of action at that time.
"Writers suffering"? Wow I don't know anything about the strike but I gotta start paying attention. I see bills point about there being a lot of people who need to work but if these writers were actually suffering for some reason then that needs to be addressed
just wanna say hi bc i can tell youre reading comments, your takes are a refreshing bit of nuance, with the goofiness from nick that i love. keep doing what youre doing!
Drew Barrymore wanted to do the same thing Jon Stewart did during the last writer's strike with _The Daily Show._ Jon didn't get enough criticism back then and the people who did criticize were either ignored or threatened by Jon himself (e.g. Seth MacFarlane personally getting a phone call from Jon who argued with him for an hour). Jon Stewart's bullshit excuse was that the non-writing staff deserved to get paid. Well, who's stopping you and the network from funding them during the time off? Why are _you_ doing the show when strikes are temporary and about leverage? People could use the exact excuse to sabotage literally any strike by stating that someone or another deserved to get paid. I presume Jon is a member of the WGA, in which case he should have been banished for crossing the picket line.
She could write her own content... those jobs have never been lucrative or ground breaking. Rich/famous people really don't want to pay more for writers out of their own bank accounts, and average people do not want to pay more for slap stick comedy. She supports what current affairs wants, doesn't have a mind of her own, she should be canceled based on that alone... walk away!
Celebrities in their need to come across as "relatable" forget that in fact they are NOT regular people. They are humans, yes, but their wealth and influence makes them exceptional as well. They especially forget that when they grew up rich - rich is normal to them, so to themselves they do not seem exceptional. It is kind of understandable how they can be this out of touch, but at the same time.. Getting such backlash should be a wakeup call, no? Or has the money altered their brain in a way they cannot question themselves anymore??
Considering she has a sensible perspective, she is more relatable to me then the writers going on Strike because they think 10k per week is ''low wages'', while not giving a damn about anyone else that is also out of a job at the same time or respecting the few that are forced to work to make ends meet.
Nobody watches her crap... If it was say, THE DAILY SHOW, I'd completely understand why they would want to keep filming. We are about to make history with a former president going to prison... and yet they haven't been around to comment on it and help America digest it. I can't imagine how I would have coped during the pandemic (and Trump presidency) without all their insightful commentary!
I'm sorry. But the point of going on strike is to prove you can damage someone's ability to earn thereby proving you, as a worker, are indispensable. If the person or company you are trying to harm finds a way to continue to earn without you, that's kind of the risk you took when deciding to strike. If this was a small town mill, or daily "average Joe" company, no one would be so outraged except the striking workers. But everyone wants to use the argument that Stars aren't being harmed by not working because they're financially flush. That's not a valid argument. What if someone views their work as a healthy way to keep mentally sound, aside from earning? What if others, down the line (in this case, production crews: sound guys, gaffers, camera people, wardrobers, set designers, etc.) are hurt beyond that person or company? Is it fair that so many others be hurt by your pursuit of better wages? I am an older citizen, retired, and I can remember back many years when any worker body went on strike, the powers that be would promptly proceed to find a way to go on with their business. It was like they were saying, "I see your statement and belief you are indispensable. I understand that you are intending to damage my bottom line in order to demand higher wages. My response to your statement is that you were wrong. However, none of you have been permanently replaced. Any who choose to return immediately may contact the office and be reinstated without any retalitory actions." (In fact, I worked for an organization where that's pretty much how it went.) Everyone needs to stop blaming or deeming actions as wrong based on the idea of political correctness or appearance of insensitivity. Business is business. And, to be brutally honest, I see rhe strikers as being insensitive to the rest if the staff's, as beiefly mentioned) needs.
Go to work, go to work, go to work. If you don’t like the way it is do what everyone else does quit, all of this striking and keeping others from getting paid is stupid! Go to work!!!!!!!!!
do you guys realise how much money and work these shows generate? the sub-par writers of today have been approached 3 times and rejected all offers. meanwhile the wga has no head, no cfo and no head of contract negotiations,
She did nothing wrong! A show consist of way more people then BAD writers! So EVERYONE on set has to suffer because a few writers voluntarily left work? NO, F the writers!
there's no justification, she might as well have just said to the writers "hey we can actually do this without yall so good luck!"
How many people you don't need are currently employed by you? All of them have decent pay and benefits, yes?

i haven't really followed this, save for the bill maher part. i can't even imagine how messed up drew barrymore's brain is being like. a literal nepo baby (i mean she practically _was_ a baby in ET!) so it's kinda like. how could she possibly have a decent perspective on worker's rights lmao? so i am excited to find out about this drama, thank you for delivering it!
honestly, Conan during the writer's strike was some incredibly good TV, he was so good at illustrating how necessary the writers were while still making the show entertaining. he did a lot of interviews with his staff, iirc. like that was the start of him messing with jordan schlansky all the time. that and NBC fucking him over showed just how funny he could be under duress.
@@elen5871 I assumed when I heard she was going back on the air she would do something like that. Hm sad
not just the fact that she spend her entire childhood in hollywood but the actual suffering that followed, especially after firestarter. she actively had real issues for years and had to step away from hollywood entirely. her talk show was the first thing she really did since she stepped back. the only perspective she has on workers rights is regarding active abuse the way she endured. she knows nothing of unfair compensation
@@MrsAnnThropy i mean sure, but abuse and drug addiction aren't what insulated her from the working class, it was the whole "being born into a famous family and getting nepotism'd into high paying jobs as a literal baby" that did _that._
@@elen5871poor you.
The writers chose to leave.
exactly, they're taking the time to recognize widespread issues then just...do whatever anyway
Is the WGA helping out the staff that have been put out of work?
this has been bothering me SO much lately. people don’t know how a strike is done anymore. they stand with the strikers but the strike is inconvenient for them so they don’t understand that the need for convenience is supposed to be outweighed by the need for a proper quality of life. it is insane times we’re living in

She decided to cancel it again. The scabs are healing ❤️🩹

Me: giving us money would help, we need more
Everyone: but you already make money so .... get another job..

it’s so wild seeing people say they stand with the strike but also say they don’t feel like it should be so inconvenient for everyone. like… u ever hear of a strike?

“ I believe there’s is nothing I can do or say in this moment to make this ok” that’s a false statement. You could stop promoting and producing your show. You could stand with the writers. You could be an example for other celebrities to follow. It’s not complicated or complex. It’s as plain as day: either stand with the people who you acknowledge are suffering or just expect the fact that you don’t give a shit about them and be honest about it.
Stop being a neop baby and stand up for something bigger than yourself.
Accept the fact**? And nepo** baby?
that line was the wildest part to me lol personally i do believe that she ~thinks~ she’s standing up for something bigger than herself by continuing. she’s just fuckin wrong about that lol. she is truly a unique case of being a talk show host. when she started the show, the worlds slogan was “we’re in this together” and that’s what she wanted her show to emphasize. she thinks (due to her lack of perspective) that this is still an appropriate application for that mentality. but workers on strike for their rights is not something to just push through until it’s over, that is obviously against the point. she feels like the show is as inspirational for everyone else as it is to her. almost every guest gushes about how inspirational they find her, so i see where it comes from. in a way, i feel bad that she has so little of anything else that she needs this show so much. but i also don’t really sympathize with a God Complex activated by stroking someone’s ego onscreen. and i certainly don’t empathize with pretending to be so helpless here. shits gross and i’m glad she backtracked, even after the damage she did.
If I had Drew Barrymore's spider a-hole ceiling pattern, it'd probably make me wanna flee my house too. Hopefully she can throw some of her millions of dollars into repainting that thing or else you just know she'll fall under an Uzumaki style curse where she's consumed by spiders
LOL
Listen, Im not personally invested in this, but young people are pretty strong in their suppirt of unions and going back on air will do more damage to her reputation than just following the wishes of the writers guild.
i didnt know about the conan o'brien wedding ring thing thats funny asf
imagine driving hours, and waiting 2 hours outside the studio just to see it
"well maybe you should have, because this is garbage" (11:42) is SO FUNNY, and obviously so true
the fact that these celebrities don't see the writer's strike as an overall labor strike astounds me. writers are one player in a much larger issue
i have no idea why the algo recommended one of your videos to me, but you seem like a completely normal and chill person.
I work at a nursing home and can confirm The Drew Barrymore show is on in the background of the cafeteria…
She could have used her platform to advocate for the workers. Interviews on her social media with people who are picketing, spotlighting her writers, whatever. I get that her superiors at the company would probably be putting massive pressure on her but idk man
that disappointed me a LOT too. like… this whole process was bad and how no one sat her down and actually asked what she’s thinking is beyond me. what i really don’t understand is why she didn’t do what conan did… she has the *perfect* show for it. textbook perfect, they already don’t talk about serious topics. she could’ve made the WHOLE season advocating for writers and people would have listened. i think drew barrymore couldve gotten the attention of hollywood execs. but she just went balls deep in sweeping it under the rug because she finds her identity in this show. shits insane how strikes are nearly meaningless today. i don’t get it
to clarify i mean listened more as they’d pay attention. i can’t be sure they’d actually listen. but they’d probably do more than not listen
Can the unions eject members for not knowing the difference between a pandemic and a strike? Like, what?
Writers are not heroes.
fascinating that she doubled-down once, then went back on it. like, ms. girl what finally convinced you??
her apology video was basically saying: 'you're mad at me? bad for you, i won't listen'
Really digging your content... Glad I stumbled across your channel. Keep it up, mate!

'9/11 happened outside'
You could say that the problem there was that an outside thing became an inside thing, when it shouldn't have...
9/11 wasn't an inside job. it happened outside. and then went inside
Celebrity baby Barrymore needs writers to write her an apology, can’t even come up with a decent one herself. How did she think she was gonna run a show without them?
Nice job on research and explaining the situation. Thanks!
ok hate me about it buuuut i actually like the show lol i’d never go out of my way to watch it but when i have watched it, it’s really wholesome and she’s very kind. i think the fact that she’s gone through what she has and the amount of people that tell her how inspired they were by her activated a kind of God Complex™️ that she didn’t really have when she started the show originally. to her, she sees it as continuing to uplift spirits bc “we’re all in this together” but it’s not the time for that anymore
i realize this sounds like i’m justifying her actions and i am not, i’m fully appalled that she would even try this. i can just see why she thought it wouldn’t be *that* bad. i’m really disappointed in her and lost some respect. i hope she feels humbled by this experience and truly understands what the strike means now, so she can advocate for her writers. she would be a great ally.
"it all began on 9/11" for a sec thought this story was going in a different direction
Thank you Austin for doing all the research for me so I can keep up with shit while also doing dishes, very cool and epic 💃
"it all began on 9/11" AUSTIN LMAO PLEASE
Thank you because you did not annoyed me with music playing all the video 😊👏👏👏👏👏
Your story telling is improving pretty rapidly.
no offense to the students who wanted to attend but how did they not know the strike was going on? unless i misunderstood the article
She's smiling through the whole video lol. She doesnt feel bad.

Casey becker went rogue
funny how all these hosts will acknowledge the problems their whole staff is facing (not just writers) and still choose not to do anything about it.
See, Conan fucking gets it. He really IS a writer, he's written for shows well longer than he's hosted a show.
What's the outro song??

"Writers suffering"? Wow I don't know anything about the strike but I gotta start paying attention. I see bills point about there being a lot of people who need to work but if these writers were actually suffering for some reason then that needs to be addressed

Drew has been in the film industry for years, she should know better! Just goes to show that money makes people delusional 😮💨
Drew has a show?
Are the writers reasonable?

Maher will always be a piece of garbage for this move. Granted he sucked before but this just shows that nobody should ever support him.
ahhh this sucks
It’s so not that deep
yeah it’s not, just pay the writers
Nobody watches her crap... If it was say, THE DAILY SHOW, I'd completely understand why they would want to keep filming. We are about to make history with a former president going to prison... and yet they haven't been around to comment on it and help America digest it. I can't imagine how I would have coped during the pandemic (and Trump presidency) without all their insightful commentary!
I still maintain that writers need to actually show that they’re worth being paid more. There hasn’t been anything WORTH paying writers for in years.

"I said I deeply apologize and I am rich and famous! Why aren't all my problems going away yet!"
And, to be brutally honest, I see rhe strikers as being insensitive to the rest if the staff's, as beiefly mentioned) needs.
this is a nuanced issue and you didn't do it justice - shame on you
Ongoing wrong with what drew said. Go back to work. The writers don't deserve more for their crappy woke writing
