991.2 Rear End Upgrade for my 991.1 Porsche 911 - Bumper and 3D Tail Lights

  • This is one of the mods I have been dreaming about since I first purchased this 991.1 a couple of years ago. Don't get me wrong, I love how the first generation 991 looks - Porsche did an amazing job in transforming the 911 for the time it was released, introducing a load of new tech and engineering while maintaining all of the attributes that make 911s special. But those rear lights.... they were OK. Not bad, not great, just OK. When the second generation 991 was introduced I was smitten with the new "3D-look" tail lights. To me, they give the car a true 21st century look while being mean and sleek at the same time. I wanted them. It wasn't until recently that I discovered it's possible to retrofit them onto my 1st generation 991 - a HUGE thank you to Andrew at NineElevenSouth for showing me how this was possible.
    I hope you enjoy this video. Part DIY, part reveal, all of it fun.
    As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!

    I think the original lights look fine and although perhaps not as modern looking as the .2 version, they have their own charm and better to keep the car true to original design. Still, if reversible then no big deal and of course it’s your motor!!

    One simple question: It's possible to "upgrade" only the Tail Lights( left and right) and keep the original bumper from my 991.1 4S ? I ask this question because i have some estetical defects on my orignals Tail Lignths and it's the good time for a littel upgrade.

    Could I please ask what brand your lift is? That is the best I’ve seen.
    Re the spoiler is it an optical illusion are or the gaps to the body work quite large?
    Is it possible to update the front bumper as well?
    One final question I also saw your video I’m comparing the .2 targa with your car. I’ve seen some that are very critical of the steering in the .1. Is there a difference?
    cheers
    Paul

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před rokem

      I didn’t notice anything between the steering of the .1 and .2 unless you’re comparing one against another with rear axle steering.
      The brand of my lift is Cavalier. I got it from Toolots.com. I would actually recommend looking at Twin Busche instead. They have exceptional customer service as well as top quality lifts for about the same price. I’ll be using them next time. There is NO support for my lift. Zero. Finding someone to service it a few years done the road is a nightmare.
      For the spoiler, the gaps weren’t an issue at all. I think it must be an optical illusion! It looked great. I loved it.
      Cheers!!

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před rokem

      Oh and lastly… you can replace the front bumper too but you might have an issue when it comes to the air vents. The .2 has active controlled air vents on the left and right to assist with warming and cooling the engine when you’re stationary vs in Motion and a few other variables. There isn’t a wiring harness for that on the .1. You can probably install the bumper but just have the air vents in the open position all the time like the .1 has anyway. You’re not losing anything, you’re just not getting the full functionality of the .2 car.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks so much Danny! The parking sensors themselves just clip into place. The wiring harness that carries the signal into the PCM would need to run back through the car to inside the dash, or under the driver's seat. I haven't done that part of the job yet. Great and inspiring work James, the result looks amazing ! I am considering this for my 2014 991.1 C2S Convertible (I bought one with clear/white 991.1 tail lights that are not my personal thing...). By the looks of it, you've used the narrowbody C2S rear bumper and not (accidently) the C4/C4S widebody bumper that NineElevenSouth used, would that be a correct assumption ? I adore the C4/C4S middle reflector bar (and the look of the widebody as well), and am still in doubt of whether I should source a used widebody rear C4/C4S bumper (as NineElevenSouth accidently did...) with the fit and gaps and all that may exist afterwards. I intend to try it before having the bumper spraypainted, but just checking in to see what you went for here...

    • @q4uconsulting
      @q4uconsulting Před rokem +1

      @@kianadanny Hi, I now have both (c2 and c4 rear used bumper), including a matching car (C2S and C4S) 🙂. These 991.2 bumpers ARE different in width (also because of the LED lightbar that is on the C4 and C4S and not on the C2 and C2S). Difference in width is 44 mm between NB and WB bumper. Since the plastic flexes a lot, I think you may get away with mounting a NB bumper on a WB car and vice versa, although I will now go for the bumper that fits the car just to make sure that it fits. For me, this project (hence for the C4S Convertible, since the C2S will be sold again, with or without the 991.2 C2 bumper...) is planned for q2/q3 2023. I intend to share experiences at that time. I can share Porsche part numbers in the meantime though if you're interested so you can try to find the WB-bumper for your C4.

    Hi - I could be wrong, but it looks like you added a 2017 - 991.2 rear bumper. Would a rear bumper from the 2018 or 2019 model year fit your 991.1 as nicely as this one did, or was there another reason you chose this model year 991.2 for your upgrade? Thanks!

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 2 lety

      I wasn't aware of there being any variations in the C2 bumpers for the 991.2 model years.

    • @RayAMi
      @RayAMi Před 2 lety +1

      I appreciate your reply! You could be right. I don’t know either. I made my observation based on comparing your bumper to the one on my car. I own a 2019 - 991.2 Turbo S. The rear bumper side vents and light strip on my car look different than the bumper you installed. It could be that Porsche uses a different bumper configuration on the Turbo S vs the Carrera? I never thought about it until I watched your video. Thank you again!

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 2 lety

      @@RayAMi aha! That's it. The Turbos always have slight differences in the front bumper (the lower running lights) and the rear bumper, as well as the side intakes of course.

    Hey man what’s your opinion on buying a used 2010 Porsche Cayman with 57k miles? What do you think is the longevity of this kind of a vehicle ?

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 2 lety

      Go for it!! The engine will last another 100k to 150k easy if it is taken care of. Get a full PPI done, but don't let 57k miles put you off a car like that.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Mario!! Welcome! Sure thing. I sourced a used 991.2 bumper from eBay for around $350. It cost $500 to paint. The tail lights were $300 each from eBay. All in all, just a little over $1500. The Moshammer duck-tail spoiler was a separate job and cost $1100 for the part (I think!) and another $250 to paint.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 2 lety

      Thanks! That's a really good question. In all honesty, part of me says I don't know if I will ever be satisfied fully but another part of me says I was satisfied the day I bought the car and it was completely stock. I'm at a point now where I love how it looks and drives, but my mods are becoming more experiments than actually mods I intend to keep forever. Besides my factory exhaust, I have all of the factory components, trim etc that I have replaced over the last year or two. Should I ever go to sell it, the new owner can have it as is or put it back to stock.

    Looks like the color of the new bumper does not match 100% to rest of your C2!? 🙄 (11:09)

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  Před 2 lety +1

      Ah right, no thankfully. That's just the product of me using a softer light color in my lighting equipment, as opposed to a more natural color. At 11:09, if you look a little further to the right along the bumper towards the other side where the light isn't shining directly, the colors match. You're probably right though, under certain lighting conditions the colors might not be perfect factory match but 99% of the time, there is no notable difference.
