  • We have all seen these debates all over forums and Facebook groups countless times but feel like very few have taken an approach that A) focuses on the more technical side (vs. opinion-based) and B) comes from people who have actually owned and driven these two models extensively. Well, here is our attempt to be somewhat objective, non-sensational, and informative for any of you who are wondering which 991 variant you should consider.

I‘ve bought a 991.1 just because of the sound you get from the natural aspirated 6-cyl-Boxer engine (with sports exhaust). It is UNBELIEVABLE. A sound I don’t want to miss and which I praise even more the more electric cars are on the road nowadays. In my opinion, a future classic.

991.2 C4 GTS does not disappoint especially at altitude. Interior cabin engine noise is quite nice.
405 lbft and 450hp is plenty and having that delivered via 4 wheels, makes this car a pleasure to drive hard.

Long before computers came around. I drove an air cooled 1970 911-S Targa.
I had a friend who owned many many different cars.
I was running through the Nevada desert around 160mph. That’s when speed limits were nonexistent. I looked up in my mirror and saw some head lights.
I looked down at my speedometer and saw how fast I was moving looked back up in my mirror and a Little red blip shot passed me.
When I got into Reno I pulled into Harass casino. There was Bill Harra standing there waving me down into an area wrapped around it with yellow caution tape was his little red Ferrari I pulled up and he said. Just park that little Porsche here I will be safe. We gambled, drank, gambled then saw a show. Everything was on the house. Bill was a great friend and had a lot of cars. I asked him about how fast was he going when he went around me. All he said was “Well over 200” every single car he owned was tricked.
Edit… that was a long time ago. Perhaps before some of you were born. !!!

Had a .1 a couple of .2s and 3 gt3 and gt3rs… the 991.1 is a good car, especially when it’s 50-60k. As inflation hits and prices go up they are not that great anymore (at 80-90k) as the .2 is just a better car: It sounds surprisingly good for a turbo (way better than the tts), has more usable power while the .1 just feels tired, power delivery is surprisingly linear and u get upgraded tech (rws cameras CarPlay) and exterior styling. We usually like older cars coz it provides a more engaging driving exp, not the .1, it’s just as sterile as the .2 and slower, and the sound is bassy nothing to brag about esp comparing to 981s or the gt cars. At around 90 the .2 is a better bargain and their sticker is much higher

What some other commenters that think that this is 991.1 puff piece are missing the following points…
Yes the performance of the 991.2 is a leap forward from the 991.1. Rear wheel steering, turbos, exterior and interior refinements… etc.
But that only tells part of the story, the power delivery is completely different, the sounds, the exhaust, just completely visceral specially with an aftermarket exhaust.
These cars drive completely differently at speed also, but to the other commenters point, the performance of the 991.2, specially when you adapt to driving it, is on par to the 997 Turbo

I chose a 2017 over a 2016 for the CarPlay stereo and the turbos that spool up like rockets from the get go. You want a stereo that works and takes you forward into the next decade v wishing your phone worked with the car. For spending 10s of thousands of dollars you want it to work v being stuck in the 2010s.

Very good video. I have a 2013 registered 911 991.1 c2s. I really like it as it’s more of a weekend car. I am hoping to upgrade to a 991.1 GTS. I am in Scotland and like you I think the NA cars will hold there money more due to the fact there is no NA coming from Porsche unless it’s a GT car. I think if you are going to daily a 911 the .2 is the one to get with more luxury and instant power. The .1 I think is a weekend blaster when you can hit the twistes radio off and listen to the flat 6 howl.

Interesting, if rather niche topic, so I can forgive the average production. My experience having driven several dealer loan 991.2s’ (3 years ago) I bought a Carrera 991.1 on first drive, sure $20k cheaper, slower than common cars at low RPM, simpler, older tech but much more expressive/exciting above 3,000RPM and more than fast enough on UK roads. The two natures and the need to work a little more makes it more of “sport car enthusiast’s” vehicle! However, it is every day usable and can cover high miles with little fatigue for the passenger so for me better than a GT car and now the 991.2 and particularly 992 are of no interest to me. A bit of head and a bit of heart is needed to choose YOUR Porsche and nothing is wrong! Good work.

1 year has passed and I have put some miles on my 2017 Carrera GTS. Based on owning a 991.1 S and my personal GTS, the GTS, in my opinion, is on another level up from the 991.1. To start with, increased torque across a broad and composed to the 991.1 peak torque. And my 991.2 GTS is blessed with 450 HP. Yes and tomorrow, please, but not instead of say a 718 Spyder, Cayman any gen GT4 or a 991 any gen GT3 ) and to me the neatness and simplicity of the 991.1 design (and drive train reliability) does it for me. For the regular driver (people buy power and drive torque...) the 991.2 is for sure a better car in many ways and disappoints just in one chapter: sound (obvious...) plus its complexity will come at a cost for the long term keepers...). But that is the greatness of Porsche and its sport cars: 987, 997,981,991, 992 and even older generations albeit I would not go much before these ones (993s are brilliant but do miss on too many things if one is considering it as regular driver) - all pretty amazing cars: nobody goes wrong with any of them
