The acetone smoothing after the sanding was really effective at getting rid of the whitening that sanding causes, so I’d say that was a success.

I’m really digging how that beetle came out, it has lots of nice contrast and a fairly realistic shape! It is saddening that the acetone didn’t smooth the prints out very much though, but I’m sure that has to do with additives in the filament and layer lines that are not as consistent as what a printer would put out. Nonetheless, this was a very interesting experiment and I’m excited to see whats to come!

Make Anything to start you don’t have to make it a 3d model. You can just make a side view and the wings and rudder. You can use pictures as a reference. But you will need to make sure it’s straight tho. To help balance it out you can leave a space in the front of the fuselage to put the wight in. To make it fly better you will need to send the wings and fuselage cuz I can imagine that the lines from 3d pen will cause quite a drag. Thats pretty much it. :)

I wonder if you could make something completely smooth by first creating the rough shape in polymer clay, baking it til hardened and then cast the piece in silicone a molding thing. Then you could use the 3D pen to add a thin coat around the mold in the colors you want for specific areas. Hopefully once it’s all hardened it’ll be easy to take out and it will have a smooth finish, almost as if you had completely made the piece on a flat table and peeled it up. I know this isn’t practical for every use but maybe for the really detail oriented projects it might work? Or just the opposite. The smoothing issue is actually one of the big factors besides price as to why I still haven’t gotten a 3D printing pen plus I don’t know which one is better than the others now. Could you possibly do an updated comparison video for 3D printing pen
