  • 3D Pens have been around since 2013. I've always wanted to learn to use a 3D-Pen, but kept putting it off. A few weeks ago, I decided to buy one and give it a go! I started with some simple projects, (which were rough) and ended up with a robot I was proud of.
    **Warning, if you watched this video and thought: "That looks easy, I"m gonna buy to buy a 3d pen and make some awesome stuff, how hard can it be?" It's way harder than it looks. I have years of 2D drawing experience and it was hard for me. You've been warned...

    A few ways to improve 3D pen stuff is to use a soldering iron (or heat gun like you had) to smooth the plastic together, use a dremel to sand it down, and paint it once you're finished. I haven't gotten to do this myself, but I've seen a channel that uses those techniques and his pieces are amazing.

    • @Hextator
      @Hextator Před 4 lety +1

      I do not want to detract from the importance of videos like this one, as expressing "the value of a first step" is one of the greater lessons one can impart, but 51 hours is not really very long at all. It's about a week or 2 if we include time spent on other things. A prodigy takes longer than that to learn to manipulate quaternions via assembly code to produce accurate artificial intelligence for a bot in an FPS game.
      Lots of people spend hundreds or thousands of hours building skills, and producing content with those skills, and then posting videos of what they created, which then get overlooked because they trust their audience to appreciate the result without going into such detail about their learning process or why their creation has value. What you're suggesting is that people don't want to see the results of hard work so much as have things explained to them, which would explain the surge of appeal of channels like 3B1B. I imagine presentation has a lot to do with it as well and that this video would have appealed a lot less if the voice over had been transcribed as captions instead.
      There are so many videos with tens of thousands of views explaining simple binary and boolean algebraic concepts in videos of 10 minutes or longer, but a video that is only a couple of minutes long which shows the results of a 1000+ hour project gets no views, even if the layers and layers of complexity of the project were originally built on those same topics that were popular in the longer videos which had far less time put into their development.
      It does make sense that limiting complexity of a presentation's topic and going into extreme detail would appeal to a wider audience, but I feel this discourages people from posting truly extravagant things that would be impeded by having to so intensely document their process beyond just taking notes - scripting, recording, and editing exponentiate process duration compared to simply performing the task being recorded. I bet B-a-S here even spent at least 51 or more hours on documenting this process into a 13 minute video, effectively doubling the time they put into it. Now imagine having to double the effort to demonstrate something you've spent hundreds of hours on to find an audience that will appreciate it.
      These are all my current theories for why it's so hard to find truly engaging content - on CZcams, the Internet, and in general - and while some of it does surface from natural selection, it can't get much more common so long as appealing to the masses is more rewarding than appealing to audiences with greatly specialized knowledge.

    I started w/ one of these a friend gave me (b/c he picked it up thinking it was neat, but did not have the art skill to really unleash it --- but I work w/ all types of mediums)
    So I began the same way you did.. but ultimately learned earlier on that I could smooth my creations w/ a cheap woodburner (worth having some type of fan/ventilation for this).
    I started a couple Marvel characters like Spiderman and Venom, but I have not picked them up in a few months b/c of other things coming up.
    This is something I think I will return to soon. I have some great basic shapes (and the long lengths of PLA worked much better for me too).
    Glad to see others enjoying this tech. It's different, and certainly fun to mess w/.

    I have an original 3doodler, six years old, and it has a useful place in my tool kit as a repair device. It's excellent for welding cracked plastic. I've mended car parts to bird cages and much in between. It allows you to add material in a close or matching color and even matching material if you order the right stuff.

    My 10yo son got a 3d printer pen for Christmas. It’s called Mynt3D Super. Theres a pro one that lets you change the temp easier but I guess Santa couldn’t afford that one lol It was intimidating for him so I played around with it instead. I made him a pixelated Minecraft sword. He picked the colors and I brought it to life. He was like “WOW mom! That looks amazing” 😊 Made my day but I have a lot to learn for sure!
    The pen also came with a silicone mat with a bunch of shapes and lines and also a plastic “screen” mat thing so you can trace something without catching things on fire and making the plastic easy to remove from the surface. So I printed out a picture of a Minecraft sword, put the plastic screen on top of the paper and basically traced it with the 3Dprinter pen. Turned out quite nice for my first time. This pen opened up a whole world for both my son and I. Thank you for sharing your journey.

    The smell you have from ABS comes from the fumes it produces, which infact are toxic. For 3d printers it's strongly recommended to only print ABS in a closed an ventilated printer and not to be in the same room as the printer. But maybe those are just overly cautious German recommendations :D
