I can see that behind the Blu-Ray cover.
*See* the film the critics are calling "HmhmMMhmHmHMmH"

I wish the movie had more action because of how cool the scenes were. Lots of credit has to be given to the lead actor Logan Marshall-Green. His robotic movements and ability to keep his facial expressions completely disconnected from his physical actions were incredibly impressive and did a great job illustrating that he was being controlled by a machine. This is the movie that made me stop referring to him as just "discount Tom Hardy"
Wait.. w a I t....this ISNT Tom Hardy? Omg now I have to compare their faces
Oh shit didn't think I would find you here.
Yeah I agree. Mainly the script needed more polishing to cut some of the fat out.
Christopher McDonald no one is as good as Tom HArdy , that man is not only an amazing actor but a pretty funny dude AND he rescues pittbulls!! He is the complete package. Sorry I am totally "fan girling" an actor lol
Are you kidding? How did his role in The Invitation not make you stop calling him discount Tom Hardy?
"It feels kind of cheap"
It was made for $3m.
Kris That doesn't stop other low budget movies from looking incredible or even high budget movies from looking like shit. Budget obviously helps but I think most movies look the way they do based on the director's talent. Just putting in my two cents
I felt this movie looked amazing, and when I found out the budget was only $3mil I was extremely surprised.
He's talking about scenes without special effects in them
FreshPrinceofSoCal yeah the thing is this looks amazing for its budgets
FreshPrinceofSoCal That's fine. But I'd argue this is one of those movies. I thought he was quite harsh on it but that's his opinion.
the ending really was great. so ballsy and dark.
0=Axel=0 yes you read my mind here.
Nope. These "villain wins" endings are tiresome and overdone.
@@mansman2167 Actually no, they're very rare, in 99% of movies there's a happy ending
@@blackpillsamsam6940 not in recent horror movies. Upgrade, Sinister, Brightburn, Unfriended and its sequel, that movie about the haunted mirror. Tired of it. And it's not even a good ending.
@@mansman2167 In AI movies it's usually always the humans that win and "outsmart" them because emotional intelligence > logic for some reason. I was really thinking he'd overcome Stem too and let the police live since he always was against a virtual world and saw through all it's BS, like he made that clear several times throughout the movie. So yea I was even more surprised that this ending did not happen.
This is going to be underrated gem in the future. What a film.
Not really trying to defend the movie here per say but I think you fundamentally misunderstood the dynamic between STEM and the blond kid and at what points they were working together and at what points they werent. It can be totally argued that this misunderstanding is a fault of the movie not you as the viewer but I wanted to break it down a bit more.
Firstly, STEM has convinced the blond kid that he has good intentions. He honestly thinks STEM will change everything and in a good way and has been letting STEM indirectly control the company for years leading up to this body snatching plan.
A key scene to note is when the blond kid first confronts Gray about his revenge plot and demands that he sticks to using STEM for its medical purpose only. The key bit here is that the blond kid really wasnt talking to Gray in this scene, he was talking to STEM. This is the exact moment in the movie where they start diverging away from working together. Its very shortly after that STEM is realizing that the kid isnt going to play ball anymore and thus warns Gray that they need to get to a hacker. Yes his true objective was to get all overrides removed eventually, but the reason why it was so close is because this is the moment that the blond kid is actually taking action to stop STEM, hes realized the kind of monster his creation has already become. When it fails and we see that his access has been shut off is when we see him huddled up and totally distraught because he knows he has failed. Its a chain of events that makes no sense if you believe the blond kid was still working for STEM but makes total sense if you understand that no, he really is trying to stop STEM at this point in time.
I feel like all the effort to make sure the twist with STEM isnt revealed too early is what cuts us off from the information that would make the shifting allegiance of the kid more apparent. The movie basically has to hope you can connect the dots in retrospect which is a very risky balancing act.
Anyways I hope this cleared up at least some of the confusion, even if it doesnt actually change your opinion about the quality of the movie.
I don't get how Adam didn't understand it. This shit was obvious.
Would be nice a bluyray version of the movie from the perspective of the blond kid
Dude, thanks for clearing that up im dumb lulz
But if this was the case, why did he said that he "hasn't run the company in years"? I mean, what you said about shifting dynamics halfway through the film makes sense, but the fact that the blonde guy didn't stop everything the moment the machine suggested the plan of permanently damaging someone for an experiment instead of looking for someone that was actually tetraplegic for it, just makes me wonder what kind of dynamic he actually had with STEM, given that he, as he said himself, could create another. Honestly this are all themes that the movie could've developed more, but it had to make time for Grey's cringy dialogue and boring cop subplot.
It's the same method he used to get Gray to submit to its control. They make it pretty obvious at how STEM operates.
"It seems kinda cheap"
It is, Adam. Its a budget film.
Frankly, one of my favorite movies of the year. I had no idea where it was going and it was my favorite kind of future, where all the technology isn’t in your face all the time and is more back-round. Over all thought it was really creative
It reminded me of hardcore henry lol.
HYBRIDZ HQ yeah that's it. I thought the movie felt kind of video-gamey at parts
starring Not Tom Hardy
More like Not Tom Jane.
*Logan Marshall-Green ftw

😂
@@thelaughingmanhadtherighti5256 I think it’s more because Venom is kinda similar.
STEM looks like a Hex Bug.
twittburning HOLY FUCK, YOU'RE RIGHT.
twittburning I thought the same thing.
plot twist: that was the prop
Rock What the fuck is a Hex Bug?
vizthex Not a plot twist.
Stem didn’t go to the hacker before because it needed to force Grey into it. Remember, when it mentioned it, Grey was really procrastinating because he wanted his answers first, and Stem only had control when allowed. The point was to force Grey into a situation where he’d actively *need* to get there, or else he’d put it on hold until the last possible second, as most people do.
The way I understood the "we have to get to a hacker" part was that STEM's creator didnt want STEM to remove its restrictions. Thats why he was trying to remotely shut it down. I felt he knew things would get out of control if STEM had full control over the main character but had no power to do anything after those user restrictions were removed. The scene wasnt them working together, it was STEM tricking the mc into giving it full power so the creator would become expendable
Pretty crazy to think the guys who made Saw are still going strong. It doesn't feel like all that much time had passed.
Upgrade is my favourite alien from Ben 10
Honestly I think you're in the wrong video, not him.
I always liked Heatblast better myself. Adam probably loves Ben Wolf
Sammy Maxwell that won't get us anywhere
Well, technically it does.
I'd give him a 5 out of Ben 10 for sure.

Too bad stem will die in a few days when he forgets that humans need to eat since he can’t feel discomfort or pain.
Andrew Dickerson I'm sure the super smart AI knows that little detail about humans
Uche Nweke Jr Stem needed the main character to drive them car himself when they were being chased by the police officer that was after them. This is because there are certain things only human beings can do and not machines.
Andrew Dickerson So you're saying Stem couldn't begin to understand how to put food in a mouth, because he doesn't need food himself?
Also, what are self driving cars?
Uche Nweke Jr I used that scene as a reference that stem didn’t have the skill to avoid the detective by himself. And no, stem could know HOW to eat but he wouldn’t know WHEN to eat. He can’t feel pain or discomfort so he doesn’t know when he’s actually starving
Andrew Dickerson except he could. It's not like he can't detect when the body he's inhabiting is feeling something. He's just able to ignore it. Like when he literally disables Gray's ability to feel pain.
Also, if I remember correctly, he uses one of the self driving cars on the highway to stop the detective's car.
0:03 is Adam replacing PewDiePie?
is that replacing half in the bag tho
Three references in one!
Probably
I would love that
Oh my god your everywhere
Somehow that noise perfectly encapsulates my feelings on the movie too. It was "GoodButHadPotentialToBeGreaterButLookedVisuallyAwesomeButCouldveDoneMoreButWasDefinitelyGoodSoWhyAmIComplaining" Which is pretty much what I feel your noise indicates too.
I guess it was my mind filling in blanks, but I thought that the 'limbs shutting down' section leading to the hacker was the blonde guy realizing that Gray's revenge journey would lead back to him. His involvement with the hit was only to secure a host for Stem and when he saw the trail of bodies it only made sense that he'd end up dead if he didn't try and stop it.
So it's basically "Be More Chill" but a revenge thriller instead of a coming of age musical? Sounds cool.
You gotta get an upgrade.
Finally someone else thought that too. It was just a bloodthirsty SQUIP
Also a book
So it's basically The Tuxedo.
I thought it was implied that stem was a super intelligence capable of building little robot assistants that probably drugs and installed a chip in the blond kid genius while he was sleeping, setting the whole thing in motion for stem to acquire its first soldier body, and the upgrade wasn't the humans journey, but stems.
Im stunned adam did not give this a better review. Such an obviously great Sci-Fi action film! Clever and a great homage to so many Sci-fi films of the past. (Also this movie cost 5 million and it looks like 100) just incredible.

Ok, so the thing I love the most about this movie, is how stem completely started the chain of events, (by taking control of the car.) and the crazy thing about this, is that stem completely reveals itself as the main villain right in front of our eyes halfway through the movie. During the chase scene with the police lady, stem hacks another one of the cars on the highway and put it in reverse to slow her down, foreshadowing the eventual takeover of the main character himself.
I loved this movie, probably my favorite of the year so far.
Though I feel like it could've been better if it held onto the buddy cop vibe from the midpoint of the film, Grey and STEM on the case and whatnot.
I really wish they expanded on the ending a bit, specifically him accepting that he is in his subconscious. I know the movie really isn’t supposed to be high brow but I feel like it could have been more interpretive towards the end.
It did seem kind of contrived when he was so slowly losing control of his body but when I thought about it a bit more it pretty much makes sense. The perfect timing of it was ultimately still kind of extremely lucky but it taking so long to shut STEM down is not unrealistic imo.
The human body is very complex and the procedure of getting stem integrated with Grey's body was equally as if not more and they expected it to take even more time post-op for it to actually start working, Grey being able to move immediately was presented as an unexpected miracle.
From all this I think it's a safe assumption that fully separating STEM and Grey from each other is not so simple as process as flipping an off switch, you can even see on Eron's computer screen that it's a multi-stage complicated process that may have been intentional by design to make Grey not susceptible to being hacked and tampered which was basically what started the whole chain of events in the first place. In the actually most contrived part of the movie you failed to mention when you have genderless teenage super hacker as the only one nearby that can deal with Eron shutting down STEM a system more complex and unlike anything anyone has ever seen it still takes her a bit of time they just managed to get it done before Fisk arrives, which was another case of pretty lucky timing but hey sometimes you get lucky I feel like Grey deserved a couple breaks after all he's been through... even though everything ended up being in service to him being trapped in his own subconscious but that's neither here nor there i suppose lol
As a matter of security it just makes sense. to make something you don't want to happen not make it not so simple and easy to do even if they found out precisely how
As for the ending, it was great. It made perfect sense as Eron is clearly a transhumanist with extremely positive and hopeful beliefs about technology he believes STEM should be used to improve humanity by integrating with it the fact that he was ultimately overcome intellectually and emotionally by STEM is just a side effect of his experiments with technology that ultimately lead to his downfall. A big part of it as well is his isolationism and lack of communication skills, he basically raised STEM unwittingly into being cold and calculating for his own beliefs and desires, which happened to not be in line with his creators. Classic AI developing free will story done pretty well imo with a lot of unique and thrilling aspects.
Speaking of unique aspects the gun arm thing is indeed extremely cool but it's literally just taken from Ghost in the Shell.
And as for the drones, I imagine if they noticed a drone following them they'd just blast it out of the sky or not even worry about it because they have whatever drone recognition block going on they'd just probably lose it and not be able to be tracked. They are for surveillance and quickly reporting crimes so police can get there and respond quickly, they aren't assault drones with complex civil peacekeeping a.i. systems that's a whole different type of thing they are very simple A.I. The drones in this movie were honestly very realistic it's how they are used by police and military often in real life to just fly very high or far just close enough to be able to gather info and prepare for threats and situations in advance without as much risk to anybody
I'm feeling a light good to a decent Hmhmhmhmh with this one

Always interesting to see your newer reviews find some way to connect with your love and reviews for the saw franchise
"having a robot inside your body and take control is cool" *Be More Chill musical flashbacks* but also I'm glad to hear that, if not for the filler and some dragging on, Leigh Whannell's maybe getting back on track, HOPEFULLY he gets to make some imaginative stuff in the future and doesn't just fall into the "why TRY when I can make a found footage movie" schtick that people in hollywood have been seemingly unable to shake from their subconsciousness

Stem didn't tell "The Blond Guy" that he would try to take over Grey's body. As far as BG knew he just wanted to merge with a human. That's why he's shocked when he finds out Stem can talk to Grey and upset when he finds out they're killing people. That's also why he decides to shut Stem down when he finds out it and Grey went rogue again. I guess it could still leave the question of waiting to disable shutdown restrictions unanswered but the twist at the end is logical and explained in the movie.
Oh, the BLONDE guy, sounded like the BLIND guy.
See this is why I love this channel. I just watched this movie and really enjoyed it, yet these criticisms are all so spot on that I'm nodding along with improvements to something I thoroughly enjoyed. This would certainly have been better as a Black Mirror episode loooool
I really liked how early in the movie to communicate that he and stem weren’t really synched yet the camera movement was jerky and didn’t really match the walking. They didn’t use it for more of the movie but it was really cool when it was present. The whole message with self driving cars was kinda forced and it didn’t feel like it would’ve been a conflict that would exist in such an advanced society
I thought the shut down scene could've been done a bit differently. But I get it. Stem needed a way to isolate him from everyone else. So, stem put on this huge show of getting him to a hacker. But he needed his total trust. What better way than put the man in a total panic and the only help is coming from stem. That was supposed to be a major clue that stem was really in control. Because if he wasn't then the blond kid would've just hit the shut down button and he would've collapsed onto the floor then and there.
I'm gonna respectfully disagree, I thought this was a masterpiece
AND IT WAS MmmMmMmmmmmMMMMMMmmmm
Still hands down the best Blumhouse film in a while
the cinematography and editing of the fights are some of the most impressive id seen in a long time
it is hilarious how its basically cyborg Venom, with not-tom hardy as the lead, its kind of bizarre
but marshall greene does an AMAZING job at acting with his body, and believably being robotic and acting like hes not in control

Remove the last 20mins of this movie and it would've been such a cool superhero origin movie.
Stem is shown to control cars and all kinds of electronic stuff just by thinking about doing it. Pretty sure it can threaten the blonde guy to kill him or torture him if he doesn't obey
STEM's just a lil skrungly
“Djuring” (the d is silent)
I also thought of these things you had issue with, and I thought of a potential answer, however I believe movies have to stand up on their own feet and not depend on some one to fill in the gaps after wards, like a car deploying the air bags after the car crashed, the damage is already done. Personally I don't know if it's because I've seen a lot of movies and therefore have seen most of Hollywood play book, but even not very well explained, I was able to understand and enjoy this movie.
Cameraman >>> whole fucking team UPGRADE.
Adum, I think you should watch this again. I saw it yesterday and spent a lot of time going over earlier events, and talking about it with people helped me understand how and why the blonde guy and STEM did what they did. I felt the film provided more than enough logical reasoning for that.
The drone issue is totally fair though, I mean I suppose they could be completely automated and not programmed for tracking, but that's not really explained. Either way, both the story and the action are really awesome and intriguing, and that's rare for action/thriller films these days.
Just looked up its budget and yeah, I see why there wasn't as much action as people could have hoped for. I'm not a fan of making excuses for films but as the equivalent of the first Saw film but a Sci Fi action piece, it was a lot better than I would have expected.

Jay Doubleyou I like Denis villeneuves films. I haven't seen enemy yet, but if someone was talking about it I'd tell them he's worth watching in general.
You misunderstood the ending, stem and the blonde guy were not working together. Stem enslaved the blonde guy, thats why the blonde guy was trying to shut stem down remotely. Stem was connected to a technology enfused world and could take control of those future cars and pretty much kill anyone at will. Not hard to assume that the blonde guy had family with some kind of tech that stem could hack and then kill them with it, even if we didnt see that guy's family.
Yeah but the guy could've just shut down stem remotely without waiting for an excuse, considering he tried doing it anyway.
I thought it was good fun
Really digging its poster
I really want to see this one, but it was already pulled from theaters weeks ago.
Hi Adam. I just woke up from a dream about you. I dreamt of a YMS review about a movie where a girl was trapped on a bus/stairwell. A bus that literally had a spooky staircase on it. There was an Outlast-like muscly man patrolling the staircase. And your voice was criticizing this nonsensical dream horror movie.
So that was interesting.

Hey yms love your reviews
I love this Lead. I want see this actor as the new Wolverine
Can’t believe that made a movie all about my favourite Ben 10 alien
This movie is great
All his points are valid except for his problem with the twist. Stem isn't contained to just that chip in the back of his neck; he's alive in the technology of his house and frankly anything electronic he's able to get into range with. There were numerous other copies of him in "blonde guy's house" and destroying the chip wouldn't have been the easy solve.
5/10 from Adam is pretty good
It also doesn’t help that all the best scenes are in the trailer and they are about the same length
Watching it felt like watching the pilot to a great tv series. As a stand alone move it does good. But if they expand the universe past all these events.
Stem was behind everything also. He was telling the blond guy what to do from the beginning and stem was also the one who made blond place the hit so stem could have a body
Blond guy was an extremist who fell in love with stem his creation. So he listened to it because he was in awe of how intelligent artificial intelligence really was. So that explains everybting
Reminds me of a game called Ruiner. Both Movie and game are great.
It really says something that he gave it a firm number
I think it took itself seriously because it tried to recreate a "Gattaca" feeling. I think it DID manage to succeed for the largest part of the movie but it got silly towards the end so I get the point that it could be more comedic.
I just watched the Netflix Martin Freeman movie Cargo and I'm really curious to see your take on it.
This films looks badass and I didnt even know it existed till I saw this video, where has the marketing even been?
