Oops. Accidentally said Peter Gilliam instead of Terry Gilliam. Somehow didn't even notice that I did that. Sorry!
YourMovieSucksDOTorg I was worried I didn’t know who the hell Peter Gilliam was! Hahah
YourMovieSucksDOTorg sad you missed the film, I hope it gets released eventually, I thought it was great and would love to hear your thoughts on it
You are forgiven.
*waves hand in priestly manner*
YourMovieSucksDOTorg
Lol its ok. It's not like people on CZcams notice unimportant things and completely focus on it rather than on the main point. And even if someone does it's not like people make the same comment over and over like children.
YourMovieSucksDOTorg how was the score for Mandy? Was Johan Johanssons final film score.
"Some people call it style over substance I just call it filmmaking" Jay Bauman
Carlos I KNOW WHO THAT IS!!!
Why not style with substance?
I READ YOUR COMMENT AND I CLAPPED!!!
TheChaoscard I'm sure the filmmaker thinks the style is also expressing something important.
Carlos - Sure, as long as it's not compensating for lack of plot and characters. Let me emphasized the word "lack." A simple plot can do, but not characters, they're what carries an extended narrative (Jorge Luis Borges, "The Duel" commentary).
We all know the best Cannes movies are Shrek 1 and 2
(I’m not kidding, both films were actually IN COMPETITION)
Shrek 1 apparently got a standing ovation... at Cannes.
????? And to top it all off, Over the Hedge and Kung Fu Panda premiered at Cannes out of competition, with KFP getting a standing ovation
Was Shrek nominated for best soundtrack?
Jackson Dammers
Wat? Why?
Nope. It's the bee movie. (Seriously, Jerry Seinfeld ziplined in a bee suit in cannes for the movie)
Never thought I'd hear Adum say "Style over Substance".
For those wondering, the song during mandy is "forever dilating eye" by sinoia caves
Thank you! At first I thought that was one of the songs from the Mandy OST, I'm glad someone commented the song name
Mandy is my favorite movie of all time, and I've been sitting here trying to figure out what I was gonna use to kill the next few hours and I realized I still hadn't seen "Beyond the Black Rainbow"
Worth noting that Nick Cage was originally approached to play Jeremiah Sand but he insisted on playing Red and after a couple of weeks, the entire crew realized how much better of a choice that is. I understand that a lot of people see Cage as a caricature of himself nowadays, but his performance in the bathroom after Mandy's death is one of my favorite scenes of all time.
Silly Adam, any movie as long as Nick Cage is in it, it will automatically become a 10/10
Mandy wins you over with a second viewing.
Definitely hard to get through in parts since the stylistic choices can be very overbearing, but a second watch will definitely be the key decision on whether you love it or hate it.
Still can't wait for the Adum & Pals edit of the Face Off commentary.
Me too, it's the first one of those I've actually seen, and a wonderfully silly film.
Mandy is definitely a 9/10. Visually stunning with great acting from Cage and Linus Roache as Jeremiah. It had a distinct 80's feel to it with a hypnotic glow that has an otherworldly vibe, enhancing the supernatural aspects. Borrowing elements from 80's films like Hellraiser, The Shining and Friday the 13th (Crystal Lake reference), it not only pays homage (with tons of awesome gore and violence) but also carves a path out of its own almost as if it was made in the 80's.
Jeremy Falkner 7/10 at best.
@@DeCapitanOGnah. That movie was fucking hilarious. Maybe get some friends and beer, put it on and have a good time
@@DeCapitanOG sounds like you're just boring.
Great video, Adam! You bring a ton of unknown and underrated movies to light in addition to your wonderfully colorful commentary. And congratulations on 800k subs!
Adum "6 out of 10" YMS
Muhammad Christ
Adum "And I'm giving this one a 6, maybe a 5, definitely not a 7" YMS
He's generally extremely perfectionist so when he says 6 he means "barely good", unlike most people that give 7 at least for that. He isn't very objective though always so it's not like his ratings are gospel, not even by a stretch.
@@AnoNymous-dh2sv I don't how you got to that conclusion but that is really inaccurate.
So awesome that you got to go to the festival. Thanks for the reviews.
I can certainly attest that the ending of "Ayka" was weak and kinda dumb.
Nicolas cage was the terminator this whole time
Nicholas Cage should have been in Bee Movie
Molasses Bike *NOOOO NOT THE BEEEEES, AAAAGHH MY EYES!!*
YA LIKE JAZZ is something I can imagine Nic Cage saying on a regular basis
Bro, you NEED to see "Sorry to bother you." It's so good!
Cale Crane
Don't bother...
Get it?
Nicolas Cage has Ascended.
Mandy was a wild experience
"If you loved BTBR you're pretty much guaranteed to love Mandy as well"
Adum once again predicts my future. I should just hire him to do my astrological charts.
Peter Gilliam
seanklaus I was gonna see if anyone else would comment about that
The Man Who Killed La Mancha
Ol' Pete Gill as his friends call him.
My favorite director after Michael Spielberg and Robert Hitchcock.
Small thing, you said the sentence "the plot was incredibly melodramatic and forced" 2 times in the Ayka part.
Not much to add when you haven't seen the entire thing, ah adum, disappointed
Did the man not also say it was repetitive?
I just found your CZcams channel from IHE and I’ve been been binge watching your reviews
As a Turkish dude who also likes Nuri Bilge Ceylan I was waiting for your rewiev of The Wild Pear Tree. I thought it was an incredible movie but I wasn't sure whether things would've been lost during translation. I'd assume some parts cannot be understood as clearly but I'm glad you enjoyed it nonetheless.
ps. about those "fakeouts" you mentioned, all of them symbolize something regarding the main character but I agree that pretty much all of them except for the last one was a little blurry and vague. That kind of thing can be a great tool of giving insight about characters imo, but it's hard to pull it off properly.
I am turkish too if you have a letterboxd account ı'd love to friend you. If you don't ı reccomend checking it out.
Just A Regular Guy I wish I was as original and funny as you.
I don’t care that style looks like my bread and butter
Mandy's music is great.
It’s cool to see that Ceylan’s new one is pretty good I loved Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.
It’s TERRY Gilliam btw, love you Adum ;)
Could you review “8th grade”when it comes to all theaters
Wiikoolaid "So I just saw 8th Grade and it was DUMB."
"So I just saw '8th grade' and it was GAAAAAAYYYYY"
Doesn't like kid actors...you really want that?
Wiikoolaid he said on a podcast that he intends to see it.
antoine guay
That is false.
4:17 The way you said his name made me laugh
Adam you got it wrong. The Wild Pear Tree is the best of the four.
Did you happen to review ‘Super Dark Times’? If not I’d love to hear your opinion on it.
Adum, are you going to do a quickie for Sorry To Bother You? I wanted to know your thoughts as soon as I finished it.
My fav movie of Nuri Bilge Ceylan is Uzak (Distant) 2002
Oh my god! Films that I haven’t heard about 😱
I loved Winter Sleep after catching it from your list, so I try to catch wild pear tree
For all the jokes and shit, you are legitimately one of my favourite film reviewers. It sounds like you just know what your talking about.
Somehow you made me really, *really* made me want to see Ayka
Nicholas Cage being in the movie makes it a must watch automatically
Can you do a review on Handia (Giant). It's one of my favourites at the moment and I'd like to see more opinions on it
holy shit! beyond the black rainbow!! I forgot this movie existed!
Mandy is a good movie
Are you gonna review the new Sicario? I really enjoyed it but it'd be interesting to see what you thought
Nicolas Cage being used for jokes and there's gore, sounds good enough
I like your reviews on lesser known movies than the bigger movies
Well someone liked the performance of the lead in Ayka (Samal Yeslyamova), because she won Best Actress at Cannes.
Could you review Spanglish? I know it’s a movie from 2004 but I had such mixed feelings about the film and I really love how you go into almost every detail of film to decide your rating of it and I really like to know your thoughts on the film.
Can you make a YMS on Unfriended 2 when it comes out?
"ok so deep wbe is scare because HACKER AND MURDER MAN AND HARCKERMURDER but we alszo have GHOSGT HACR MURDER 😱😱😱😱😱@
When I saw the trailer I was like, “Oh look its Unfriended 2” and then I saw the title sequence. I was joking and the fact I was right seriously shocked me? How did they get a sequel?
Adam (Whoops, I mean Adum), what are your thoughts on Okja? I despise it.
Haven't seen mandy so i'm not knocking the review (really wanna see it!) but isn't style over substance something ppl say who don't understand that sometimes the style IS the substance.
I mean, Fury Road and The Raid are movies where the STYLE and TECHNIQUE is the point and the actual meat of the story is bare. The subtext comes from the way something is conveyed. It comes at Night rings a similar bell.
But isn't that just all perspective tho? Some ppl watch David Lynch movies and just see them as a jumble of odd dream-like imagery that has no larger point but to reflect the mind and subconscious of lynch.
While some see meaning in the way it reflects the duality of man and the psyche or whatever.
Like I watch Neon Demon and love the aesthetic and know that the way it looks is far more important to its ideas than what its actually about. Again, I haven't seen Mandy, so I could just be wrong here ha.
@@iansmart4158 Yes it is perspective, and adam gave his perspective. he doesn't say his opinion is objective in any way.
I've seen Mandy (and I'm sure you have too by now) and it is definitely not style over substance. All of the stylistic choices fit really well together, using LSD as a kind of narrative glue. I suppose it helps to have some experience with psychedelics, they really put a lot of effort in to making the movie reflect the effects of LSD in a way that I have never seen before, and all of those choices are pieced together by a solid narrative. It's very stylized for sure, almost obnoxiously so, but I don't see how that somehow negates the feeling of substance you might get from a story like this.
Did you mean Terry Gilliam? (i.e. the man who killed Don Quote?)
Mandy deserves a 9/10. Its visually stunning, superbly directed, and has a great lead performance from Cage. It probably could have been cut down by 15 minutes but that would be my only complaint.
Eh, I'm against any complaints about cutting, if the movie is 4 hours long and the director wants that, I'll watch the whole damn thing and enjoy it knowing that it was a deliberate choice.
Did you see The Man Who Killed Don Quijote? Since it was announced for cannes I was looking forward to your opinion on it
Saleh Ali damn, that makes me really sad, I actually managed to see it here in Spain and it was heartbreaking being alone in the cinema, but I loved the film anyway
Alejandro Silva Gilliam lost his movie to that pig who didnt fulfill his part of the deal, I looked up what the fuss is about and that producer seems like a truly awful person for taking away Gilliam's 30 year old passion project and then demanding everyone who worked in the film to pay him.
Gilliam isn't taking that guy's shit though.
Saleh Ali a bunch of countries in Europe are actually getting it. I live in The Netherlands and we're getting it in a week. Really sucks that it won't get released in America though, though a dvd rip will probably appear online in the future.
A list corrections video. That sounds legitimately interesting. Also I'm extremely excited for Mandy, I'm glad to see you gave it a positive review.
When are you seeing *Sorry to Bother You?*
That ending theme always fuckin unnerves me
I think I might give The wild pear a shot. Looks stunning. lol but I don't get how you can give something a score if you haven't fully seen it. To me it's like if I only listened to the first movement in Brahms Requiem and gave it a score. Idk
the only thing i was hopping for was Lars von Trier. thank's adam
Nicolas Cage forges an axe...
Why is the ending screens to your videos so ominous and unsettling
Have you seen Sorry to Bother You yet?
Wow! I didn’t know that Baldi exceeds in movie reviews as well as math!
Peter Gilliam 6:59
Andrea was mesmerizing in Birdman.
I just wanna go watch 'Beyond The Black Rainbow' solely for the cover art.
Hope to see your opinion on Sorry to Bother You
I have the bell checked even still i did not get your vid in notifications
It feels like these are all rated (on the point scale) higher than they are being described as lol (besides TWPT)
The directors name is pronounced Noori Bilgheh Jaylahn
Hey Adum! I think I found a little game you might like. It says it's only two hours long. It looks like Life is Strange, but apparently not a pile of shit. It's called 'The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit' and it's free on Steam. It looks bad, but not terrible, and I think you might actually like it.
Did you get to see The House That Jack Built ?
Did you even watch the video
No he didn't.
Connor Webb: sorry I missed the last 30 seconds of the video
He said in a tweet i believe that it was sold out, so he wasnt able to
What movies would you rate a 10/10 or has nothing like that caught your eye
I’m mostly happy that nic cage is giving a good purpose
According to Roger Ebert...Nic Cage was on top...along pacino and deniro
1997residente in a way, Nicholas Cage IS on top. A top that only Nicholas Cage can reach
When he is GOOD, he is fucking amazing ("Wild at Heart", "Leaving Las Vegas"). Unfortunately, he is not good very often anymore.
@@murrayroodbaard207 Adaptation as well.
IS THE FIRST FILM PLAYED AT THIS FESTIVAL CALLED THE "CANNES OPENER?"
Yes
Ayka is Sergei Dvortsevoy movie. He previously was documentary director, and he really should stick with doc films.
He made really good documentary on Russian suburban area of late 90s - "Bread day" (1998), check it out
Wait...Lars Von Trier made a new movie? Shoot, that's the kind of thing I'd normally know about by now.
"Pre face" lol
You need to do a review of "Unsane".
Do u hv letterbox?
Okay, *what* year were these released?? They definitely do not look modern quality.
Low budget does that sometimes.
Lead actress of Ayka is *insert pun here* survivor.
Does anyone know what Adam's favourite film is?
The Holy Mountain, I believe. Unless he's found a new one recently.
Go to his imdb page
hey adum how'd you like the revenant again
I'd like to hear your thoughts on Sicario
YMS... they are making another Unfriended movie
Damn, Adam! I thought that was you in Mandy at 1:40. Sorry.
Beunos Dias Mandy
Think I'm going to see Mandy even though you didn't like it that much. BtBR kinda grew on me on my second viewing.
So 4/10 for first 40 minutes, 10/10 for full 100?
My first though was “is that nick cage”?
More like Can't Film Festival am I right!?...
Has Adum every given a movie a 10/10?

His description of Ayka sounded like pretty much _every_ Russian movie.
Can you please do, “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot?”
Ayka is actually film from Kazakhstan, dude.
Have you Ant man and the wasp, and if so are you gonna do a quickie?
What about Dogman?
I'll watch the wild pear tree if its not as slow as a ghost story
Is 7 good ??
