  • Rare footage of former head of Amiga Technologies and Amiga International Petro Tyschtschenko speaking about his time at Commodore , the Escom buyout , and his time at Amiga before handing control of Amiga over to Bill McEwen. This footage is from a 2001 roast hosted by Amigan St. Louis . The original video is titled "The Petro Roast" and was produced by Bounce Back Videos. It was sent to me by Bob Sharp of Amigan St. Louis back in 2001 due t being president of The Westchester Amiga User Group. The original video is 1 hour and 20 minutes long so I cut it down to Petro's speech only. Enjoy!

    I've bought one of those last Amiga 1200 in those years, I've had hope for the future. Unfortunately that was my last Amiga, which I've been using for 10 years before to search for an alternative. Good memories mixed with sad ones. It's incredible how, after more than 20 years, I finally bought again an Amiga 500 and a 1200.
    Thank you for the great video!

    Man, I miss that computer loyalty and excitement so many of us grew up with (before they all became basically the same...) An era is gone forever, though maybe not with the extreme interest in retro-computing lately (both software and hardware being created for old systems on a regular basis). Even the old Atari 2600 (the Amiga's maternal grandmother!) is still getting new stuff!

I know David Pleasance is writing a new book, and has invited Petro to write a chapter, and I do hope he does - as it was a long time ago and he has nothing to be ashamed about. I’ve always believed there were two sides to a story and quietly I have known for a while that whilst some bad things happened during the Commodore buyout of 94/95, from reading over many years that despite many contrary reports I think Petro did have a good passion for the Amiga and if you read on Usenet the PR and what happened in 1995 for all his faults they did manage an unlikely operation. It’s easy to criticise and yes maybe Escom did the dirty on Commodore UK but I still think Petro did a good job overall. Let’s face it Commodore UK couldn’t have really changed things by 1995/96 the Amiga though I love it was too far behind by then. Escom’s bankruptcy brought about far too quick a conclusion to some very hard work, by few people, getting Amiga back on the shelf with monitors in short time. Petro is not perfect, and neither am I, but I feel history is treating him a bit too harsh. Many of us have been in the employ of others who directed the terms, of which we felt no power or ability to change and have to do as we are told. And so I close with, what the Amiga needs is peace, not factions or recriminations but as it has seen, a reclamation of all it stood for and still is.. peace. X

      And yes I was there when Jim Collas headed Amiga and that was the only time between 1996 and 1999 I thought Amiga had any chance of a commercial comeback. That was a special show back in the 1999 in Kensington town hall in London for the world of Amiga, plus ça change, plus ça change.

      Did a good job? he just about single-handedly sabotaged the effort of real Commodore/Amiga people to have the absolute last chance of giving the Amiga some sort of future as a hardware platform, instead he delivered into the hands of PC manufacturers who had no interest in the Amiga hardware as they only wanted the Commodore brand. It's thanks to him we were stuck in 1992 with 2mb A1200's on the shelves for the next decade instead of Hombre and whatever else they were working on when it went bankrupt.

      Planet Barry I did not say he was perfect or history was, but honestly Commodore UK’s plan for Micronik’s A1200 tower would not have saved the Amiga either. I’m not saying Petro was perfect, or that day David Pleasance and Colin Proudfoot was wrong and god knows the underhand buyout tactics were subpar but honestly if Commodore UK had got the Amiga in April 1995 could it have chucked out a Sony PlayStation killer in a year? That’s a tough ask, and I say that as someone who sees the Amiga as productivity machine not just a games machine but the latter is where it’s volume cane from. My point is to say in a short few months a good job was done in getting Amigas back on the shelf regardless of their viability. There was not a cat in hells chance of hombre being out in 1995. If you want to point fingers at balance, it’s at the man who Petro carried bags for.

    • @Harp00nX
      @Harp00nX Před 4 lety +3

      I'm not saying anyone could have turned it around, just that his interference made sure that the only people who were serious about the Amiga were denied the chance to try. This is the reason why he is not well thought of. Otherwise i'm sure he is a very likeable bloke who couldn't have done much more for the Amiga, given the circumstances he lead it into.

Now imagine a world where dell won the amiga assets. Would they just of stayed in a box? Would we still be talking about it today? I do believe Petro really wanted to do something positive with the Amiga and really tried to. But, all in all, his reign won't be remembered very positively. In many countries, people didn't even realise the Amiga was back on the market after the Escom buyout. Maybe it was different in Germany and the UK, but in Italy there was no marketing, no commercials on TV or magazines..nothing. And I think in many other countries the situation was similar. Also, in 1995 people expected more than 1992 technology for their money, A1200s and A4000s were simply not enough in a world already dominated by Pentium PCs and PowerPC Macs.
