  • Bill starts to build his "Dream Amiga" 1200. He shows how to replace a Commodore Amiga case & keycaps. He also shows how to upgrade the Kickstart ROMs to 3.1.4 and install a CF to IDE adapter. This is the first video in a series that will document his experience building this machine. Future episodes will include installing a Warp 1260, custom Workbench setup & more!

    Awesome. I did the exact same. Had both my 1200's (one from my late grandpa) recapped, mine with polymer and used my grandpa's to donate its Blizzard board. I have the regular white case and new keycaps and indeed, it went from a "working, but with weird quirks" to a machine that feels brand new and fast. Love this community.

    I painted my original A500 black and I trashed it a few years later when it stopped recognizing floppies. I have since bought a new A500 because I regretted trashing my original. I had a ton of artwork I created on Deluxe Paint and Disney's Animating Studio. I had a "friend" that was going to convert all my art to bmp in exchange for all my program disks. He kept the program disks and never converted the art. Needless to say we are not friends anymore.

    For how i see it so far, FPGA, new cases and AROS kickstart are the real solution to have a fluorishing alternate open amiga environment detached from copyright issues and people that will not mention here (but most amigans knows) that put ROI first and therefore stop the technology to spread - this of course IF there will be enough people still interested on amigas...

      I had a black A1200 case, not CD32 grey, and the LCD cut out above the Amiga logo was pretty noticeable. Had I kept the case I would have put an LCD in there as the colour looked particularly uneven to my eye. Perhaps I am just too picky though. Otherwise the case was great but I sold mine on as couldn't afford to pay out for the 1200 to go in it at the time :-(. Have a 500 now and will be keen to get a new case for this once resellers have them.

    • @mark12358
      @mark12358 Před 4 lety +1

      @@roscoe500 I think that, lighter the color, lesser the problem. Even if that's NOT a real problem because these new cases are really well made. This uneven color could only be spotted in areas where the user can choose to break the plastic to mount new accessories. Otherwise they're nice and OK. I've ordered 2 more A500 new cases (one original color, one transparent).

      It's not a button. That clip falls off. It's clipped onto a piece of metal. Flimsy A1200 floppy design because of space limitations. I had to take apart my floopy drive several times because of spiders and dust inside (for real). I can't even find these in working condition for sale online (just the floppy drive) so I keep realigning the heads by hands and it kind of works. Some disks send the heads flying back and forth. It's a funny noise until you need to fix your floppy drive.

No A500+, no A600, no CD32, just a black A1200 with a floppy drive on one side, but I would have added a CD-ROM drive on the other side. It would have beat the Mega-CD by a year, and can you imagine CD-ROM Amiga versions of Final Fight and Street Fighter 2? Bundle it with a six button controller and I'm positive that Commodore would have survived.

    I often wonder how cheaply the Amigas could be made nowadays with all of the things we've learned about cost-reduction and combining so much multi-chip functionality into one chip, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire motherboard could be reduced to 3 or 4 chips (plus the support caps, etc). On this note, I think an Amiga Mini for $99 with 25 or 30 included games would sell VERY well!*
    *Jeri Ellsworth (she is an amazing person. Self taught chip designer. Check out her channel!) actually was in the process of creating an Amiga "on a chip" for a toy manufacturer but the project was cancelled. Here's Jeri talking about it: czcams.com/video/5uaDzF99a80/video.html

I was kind of surprised. But personally I am very happy with my MiSTer and Pi4

      @@TheGuruMeditation I wonder if a kickstarter is in order then? If it doesn't meet the finance goal everyone gets their money back so no harm done. But if it does, then we've learned how popular such an idea would be and we've financed it too! I know about the MiSTer, but I feel it is a bit too expensive for someone who just wants to play old Amiga games without using an emulator.
      Just for the heck of it I checked to see how many PC-Engine/TurboGfx16 units were sold: About 5.8 million and how many Neo-Geo systems were sold: Less than 1 million units worldwide, so they are in the ballpark of how many Amigas were sold worldwide: About 4.8 million. Of course the NES and SNES and Sega systems blow those numbers away, but there already is a TurboGfz-16 mini and a Neo Geo mini, so it wouldn't be too crazy to think that an Amiga mini could work, especially if they can get the price point to under $100 and include some GREAT games (and the ability to load adf files from SD card, etc). For a bit more I think many people would also pay for a real keyboard, even if it's small (in fact, that would make it even cooler if you ask me). Imagine a mini Amiga 1000 with a detached keyboard (that would also be able to switch into AGA mode)!
      Anyone here have the skill to even attempt such a thing to make a prototype to present it on a kickstarter campaign?
