Having kids tend to the chickens IMO is extremely important. Collecting the eggs, when I used to visit my aunt, feeding them scraps, and eating her canned pears and plums, left a strong "you can do it yourself" imprint on me, as a kid. This stuck with me for all my life.....I canned my homemade bread and butter pickles, from my own cucumbers that I grew, this year, and they were delicious! Don't have the homestead for chickens...but I'll never fear getting them because of that early imprinting.
