    would coal dug deep in the ground be the same as biochar?

      Nope. Coal is compressed organic matter. All the volatiles, oils, etc. are still in there. Biochar has been super heated so that it's simple carbon, no oils or anything else, and lots of space for life inside it. Thanks for a great question!

    Save the bones to return calcium into the soil. Make charcoal out of wood, leaves, bamboo, hay, seed husks etc. Seems like a shame to let all that calcium go into the air.

      We do add lots of bones into our compost pile because you are correct about the calcium. There comes a time when the dog toys simply need to disappear, though.
