I was an evangelical worship pastor who recently converted to Catholicism. What you said about the lack of substance of the Eucharist to guide the music is spot on. There is no sacramental worldview in evangelical churches but there’s a craving for it, and so the music becomes this thing that attempts to bring this transcendental climax instead of the body and blood of Jesus.

I nearly gave you a thumbs down but then realised you did what I did for over 30 year’s calling the Baptist Cult a church without batting an eyelid because it’s so ingrained in us! You said incorrectly of course evangelical churches which actually don’t exist! Remember there’s ONLY ONE Church the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church founded by God himself two thousand year’s ago! The orthodox became cults when they broke with Rome in 1054AD,plus they reject the Filioque! The Baptist Cult was founded by Joseph Smythe 400 year’s ago! Protestant’s belong to 40,000+ man made CULTS which are Pagan and anti Christ. Anti Christ because they reject the holy Catholic Church which is Jesus Christ on earth his mystical body. Pagan because they put their own false interpretation on sacred scripture which is blasphemous and they reject the infallible magisterium of the holy Catholic Church on their own fallible authority! Please watch the warning or illumination of conscience by Christine Watkins. Then Following Padre Pio. Then The Papacy can NOT be destroyed. Then Don’t call protestant’s Christian. Please listen to these holy priest’s Fr’s Ripperger,Mark Goring,Bill Casey, Jim Blount, Donald Calloway,Mike Schmitz, and Chris Alar. (Our Lady of Good Success. Also Our Lady of La Sallette). God bless. Praise Jesus and Mary always!!! Please read True Devotion to Mary by St. Louis de Montfort, who infallibly said there’s NO salvation without devotion to Mary!

Welcome to the Church. I myself was confirmed when I was 28 after being involved in music and prayer ministries in non-denominational settings. While singing songs of praise and worship are ingredient to a rich congregational experience of "enthroning Jesus" with our voices, I entirely agree--the way that the reality of Jesus' presence in His Eucharist literally brings an entire room to its knees and summons our full attention and adoration is unmatched. Everything we had been aiming to achieve through our songs was made concrete and mystical all at once when I encountered Jesus' humble presence in the Eucharist.

The University of Steubenville has that same kind of hideous music in their "youth" conferences. Priests at a Steubenville "youth" conference were break-dancing on stage & were on the floor, spinning on their backs! That blasphemous spirit (in music) has infected the entire Catholic/Christian church-world! Jesus... dragging that heavy cross on His scourged back for all of US! He surely deserves more love & respect than this! It's no laughing matter.

Jesus Culture can be uplifting, but can sometimes get to be too much for me. The Hound & Fox do sing a lot of beautiful religious music as well as secular… they are a lovely duet. Sounds Like Reign has a lot of great acoustic songs, I love that they do all verses of His Eye Is On The Sparrow. I have been involved in Music Ministry for about 30 years. The biggest struggle I have had during this time is one of the topics discussed - how to make sure I am just the channel to help bring the congregation closer to Jesus during mass. I pray before mass that I can be that channel and not get caught up in my own "performance".
So, I get the discussion about keeping the musicians in back. But, I disagree - it shouldn't matter where the music is coming from, done right, it should not be a distraction but a catalyst in the celebration of the Eucharist.

I've been yearning for Christian music that was actually pleasant to listen to. Not only did I find the last song (the best), & the jazzy song to be examples of songs I want, I'm going to look for albums. The Gregorian chant was very moving and I could see myself gardening or cooking listening to it, got to get these. Since my reversion a few years ago, a lot of what I used to listen to, doesn't do it for me any more. This was one of my favorite shows to date.
On that note, you all stopped showing up in my feed, so I'm way behind I hope listening to several episodes today will put you back in there.
PS If any of you guys read this, do you have a show on good Christian novels? Are there any? I'm a book hound and all I read for decades were murder mysteries with a pagan theme. I found one book I like several years ago, I think it was the Wishing Bridge or something like that. It ended up being a Christian book instead of pagan and I loved it. Sure could use some good tips. Anyone?

Others that I’ve always liked are Audio Adrenaline, PFR, Big Tent Revival (Steve Wiggins), Out of the Grey, Newsboys, Fernando Ortega, Steven Curtis Chapman, John Elefante, Third Day. Most of these came out of the burgeoning ‘90s CCM movement, and are some of the best of the best. Granted, though, a large percentage of CCM music is cringeworthy or saccharine. I know this video was posted a while ago so idk who will see this, but I’m a Christian that’s going to be going to a catholic college because that’s what my scholarship was for…. Anyways I was watching this video because I was curious to see what the Catholic Church thought of Christian worship music. I encourage you guys to keep digging, and listening to Christian music. To go past the old “silly” songs, or the not so good singers that are on CZcams. That last song you guys played you said you like that song because of the history you have with it which is great, and we all have songs that we have a connection to. Some worship songs the artist themselves might not have experienced what their singing about but they might have heard a story from someone they know. (Listen to the song Reason to praise. It’s one of my favorite songs.) Also in the video you talked about how Christians will preset the mood/feeling of the song. I just wanted to let you know that as someone who is on a worship team. None of that is scripted. Whenever someone says something before a song it’s because the holly spirt was moving in them, and put that message in their hearts. It’s not because we want to force anything onto anyone. I hope this doesn’t sound rude. If it does, I’m sorry, It’s not intentional. I just wanted to encourage you to keep listening to modern worship music. Trust me there a big difference.

Guitar Mass was the order of the day when I was in grade school. The religious sisters put together a mimeographed music book. They took Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind" and copied it exactly except they changed it to " Living In Amen". Even as a little kid I knew something was "off". I think ASCAP/BMI eventually shut that music book down. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Strange comments! I played in the folk choir at the University of Mississippi and we always had liturgical appropriate music. We not only filled the church when we played, but folding chairs has to be added on each side of the pews. We played Masses, retreats, and times of Adoration. There were many conversions and Catholics who were strengthened in faith from our music and the Spirit that was with us. I get emails and Facebook comments from people who say our music and witness has made them stronger in their faith and in their discipleship to Jesus.

woooo, I saw this title and I came in ready to fight but I actually agree with most of what you said. Avett's, Chance, Lecrae . . . all great artists. I would add Paramore, Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons, and on the older side Springsteen and U2. I think a lot of why people dislike Hillsong, Chris Tomlin, Elevation, Bethel etc is because it is meant for corporate worship but often gets placed in commercial spaces like radio stations and youtube. Praising God with those songs in a basement at a bible study, at adoration (as you guys mentioned), or (when done appropriately and well) at mass is very different than how the radio edit sounds on spotify. I'd love to have you guys have this conversation with a Catholic musician who knows liturgy and the modern worship context. I also think most of the early examples (son seed, the crazy Oceans drummer) aren't examples anyone think are any good. Christian musicians make fun of those as terrible also. I 100% agree that so much Christian worship music leaves us wanting something more substantial (like the Eucharist). great job!

A big part of it is money. Major publishers promote pop music that appeals to the lowest common denominator because it makes them great profits. It's not music fit for liturgy, it's for entertainment purposes. Many countries and dioceses print their own hymnals, which would be preferable for the US but the American way is for a private company to make a bunch of money instead. The Catholic Church has an ancient musical tradition, but you'll hear very little of it and any music before the mid-60s because it's public domain and can't be turned for a profit.

Walked in to salesian parish, it said catholic church on the outside, but on the inside it was more like a modernists protestant "atmosphere" "vibe" worship center! with a minimulist catholic decor, no stations, no mary, no saints? They had a band near the altar of the sanctuary, a couple of big screens hanging like Shanda leers projecting all the lyrics and liturgy responses, I'm surprised they didn't have touch screen interaction ipads on the pews!! As you walk in you don't see a crucification until after you walk in, it's behind you? & not in the sanctuary, that was strange? As I had been praying for a church to be my parish after being away for many years it took walking into a few to realize things are not what I remembered especially at this salesian parish one with the postmodern Protestant Catholic hybrid place, I may be too harsh at the moment but I walked out for more reasons than what i witnessed and those reasons are a different topic for a different day!

I’m Catholic but don’t listen to much Catholic or Christian music. There’s some interesting Prog Rock that appeals to me…Neal Morse’s various projects come to mind but most of his music is long. His song “We All Need Some Light” with Transatlantic is a great short song with a spiritual message. His “One “ album is fantastic. The more recent “Welcome To The World” is bleak but is the opening to an album about the rediscovery of Christian spirituality. “Close To The Edge” by Yes isn’t Christian but is undeniably a deeply spiritual song despite Jon Anderson’s free-verse lyrics. Marillion have also written songs that touch on the spiritual. I always thought that “Estonia” would be a fitting song to play at my funeral.

Our Parish has some incredibly humble, talented musicians who are versatile enough to do all types of music. One of the Masses is devoted to more CCM than the older hymns. I don't believe it gets in the way of the sacramentality of the Mass at all--I think it enhances things. It's a large part of what kept me coming back, and what led to my full reversion to the faith. The focus is always on Christ, and I believe the music points straight to Him.

I would like to add a thought to Ryan S.'s comment at minute 42 or so: I strongly disagree that the "better" music is the one where the songwriter just tells his story about his relationship with the lord. I think THEN it gets dangerous of becoming a scenario where it is just about the musician or myself and the cuddly feelings. Worship music in my opinion should be a proclamation of who GOD is, not how I feel like. This is why I like songs that refer to Bible verses and proclaim things we can say about God like that he is good, faithful, strong, gentle, a redeemer, and so on and so on... Old Catholic hymns were prayers written by Catholic saints and were about what WE had to do, so it actually improved the way we lived. eg. MAKE ME A CHANNEL OF YOUR PEACE is the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi; TAKE AND RECEIVE is the prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Modern religious songs are more about praising Jesus and less about improving our lives..

  • @JohnHalloran
    @JohnHalloran Před rokem +2

Musicam Sacram is pretty clear that "no music" is not an option. Even a priest that cannot sing can hold one note for the prayers... And I truly have issues with a choir loft... read the GIRM... the choir are music MINISTERS... they lead the sung prayer. Read "Sing to the Lord" which is a compilation of the various texts concerning music in our Catholic Faith. The choir is not supposed to be "heard." And the organ - which does have its place - was built because individual instrumentalists were not available. Seeing a lot of people playing a number of instruments should not be a distraction. If they are, then that is an issue that the parish should address. At the same time, the choir/cantor are not a show... are they performing? Are they performance.

    • @atwistoffaithmusic

The struggle for Catholic music ministry is that as a musician, it can feel like a performance... but, we have to constantly remind ourselves that we are there as ministers (as you say), I like to think of it as being a channel for the spirit - I believe the music and song to inspire the congregation to sing and participate in the mass... I think the saying is when you sing you pray twice.
